Who’s Watching the Kids?
T
ime sucks us in when we’re online. Twenty minutes go by like two. It’s worrisome, because I spend a lot of time online, so I’m losing a lot of minutes. Such is the same
with my smartphone. The thing is, it’s starting to bug me. I need more time. Like you, I drive with my cell phone within reach. At a stoplight or in stand-still traffic I might look at my phone for new texts or a quick search. I think this is sort of not good, though. I think the phone should stay away when I’m behind the wheel. The worst I’ve seen is a woman driving with her iPad perched above her steering wheel as she drove. Really? You can’t just drive and BE HERE long enough to get from here to there? Your life is SO important that you have to put yourself and others in jeopardy? At Guitar Center, there was a mom on her cell phone. Three little kids were running wild among the guitars, keeping the management busy. Their mom couldn’t care less. One little blondie runs up to her mom and tugs. “Jessie! Stop!” the mom snaps, impatiently. Jessie runs off. There’s a crash from the corner of the store where I can see quick flashes of moving little bodies from my peripheral. “Jessie!” the mom hisses, stomping to where Jessie might be found. The thing is, soon enough Mom’s back on her cell phone. Don’t be THAT mom. I think about another mom I know. She’s the exact opposite. She’s just the nicest person and the calmest mom. She’d never dream of ignoring her kids for her own pursuits. She GETS that the kids are her priority. When they ask her questions she is patient; I could never be as thoughtful in my responses. I see her behave this way a lot, helping her kids, teaching them, nurturing them. Be like THAT, I tell myself. Calm, listening, available as needed. Her kids are the happiest kids! In contrast: Guitar Center Mom. She’s all about what SHE needs and the heck with the little monsters. And they were little monsters, too. So needy. Don’t be THAT mom. Constantly being on your phone is gauche. I mean, get a life. Or at least, recognize that you already have one right in front of you. It’s good manners to care for your kids — and they’ll behave better for you because of it.

NURSING TROUBLES. Could Baby Be Tongue-Tied? By Sherry Hang
Breastfeeding can be tough for new moms and even harder for infants having trouble. Know what to do.
N
ew moms are well aware of the benefits of breastfeeding their newborns, but there are times when it can feel like an exercise in torture if Baby doesn’t latch correctly. That doesn’t necessarily mean you and your baby are doing it wrong. He might simply have ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, in which the band of tissue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth is too thick. That makes it hard to use the full range of motion needed to properly latch and suck, and that can make for painful, frustrating breastfeeding sessions. There’s a procedure to help, called a frenectomy, that clips the tissue to free up the tongue. In the past, that might have meant operating rooms and anesthesia, according to Murray Dock, DDS, MSD, of Montgomery Pediatric Dentistry. But Dock and his associate Lisa Rudolph, DMD, MPH, have recently added a new service in his office that includes using a state-of-the-art laser to vaporize the

tissue. “It allows for a very fine focus so that we can target the tissue more precisely,” he says, adding that other benefits include a fast procedure (some take as little as 20 - 30 seconds once the baby is ready), no anesthesia, very little pain or bleeding, a faster healing time, and less recurrence. “We’ve done about 50 so far,” he says, “and we’ve had amazing results.” Dock requires a full evaluation before scheduling the procedure. Families first meet with his team, composed of a lactation consultant and an occupational therapist, in what they all refer to as the “triad of care.” Jamee Diver, IBCLC, is the first point of contact for a family struggling with breastfeeding. She looks for symptoms like nipple pain or damage in Mom, colic or reflux in Baby, inability to latch or a shallow latch, “clicking” at the breast and more. “We’ll try things like position first,” she says, adding that if that doesn’t seem to help, a full oral evaluation is offered.
“A proper, full oral assessment is critical,” says occupational therapist Michelle Emanuel and the other leg of Dock’s triad. Emanuel looks at all aspects of oral motor skills, including tongue motion, head turning preferences and asymmetries in facial or jaw development. “Is it really baby’s tongue that’s causing the problem, or is it jaw, posture, etc.?” says Emanuel, adding that the team’s goal is to “ferret out those issues first.” If a frenectomy is appropriate, Dock schedules the procedure when everyone can attend, so that families have plenty of support before, during, and especially afterward, when the real work begins. Once the release of the restrictive tissue is complete, parents will have three to six weeks of habilitation
sessions with Emanuel and Diver to help facilitate their baby’s tongue movement and strength. Emanuel also recommends parents see her at least once before the procedure so they’re familiar with the prescribed oral exercises and have a chance to practice on their baby when they’re not as worried about pulling on a sore tongue. Although many babies show signs of improvement almost immediately, both Emanuel and Diver caution parents to be prepared for bouts of regression. “They might be fussy a few days after the release,” says Diver. “They’re using muscles they haven’t been using, so they may be a little sore.” But with patience, and a full support system like Dock’s triad, moms and babes will be well on their way to successful breastfeeding.

Among the oversize figures of Seuss characters, children and adults enjoy literacybased fun. In both Spanish and English, parents and children play rhyming games, invent stories and think creatively using the latest innovations in interactive learning. The second floor recreates the studio where Ted Geisel, the real name of Dr. Seuss, created his stories and illustrations. Geisel’s stepdaughters Lark Dimand-Cates and Leagrey Dimand donated memorabilia including his collections of crazy hats and more

than 100 whimsical bowties. “I emptied my house,” Dimand told reporters. The yellow walls replicate the color of Geisel’s studio in La Jolla, California, and surround his couch, drawing board, and the trunk he carried throughout his trip to Peru. Along with stuffed animals and favorite books, the museum displays oil paintings, drawings, sculptures and Geisel’s illustrated notes. Geisel’s fame began with 1957’s The Cat in the Hat, but that story was actually his 15th published book. His first was And to Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was inspired by childhood memories of the real Mulberry Street, just blocks away from the Springfield museum. In total, Giesel wrote and illustrated 44 children’s books, helped produce numerous film and TV programs, and won two Oscars, two Emmys, a Peabody and the Pulitzer Prize. The works of Dr. Seuss not only teach and delight, but also inspire, and occasionally address social issues. The value of every individual can be seen in the repeated line “A person’s a person, no matter how small” from 1954’s Horton Hears A Who. The evils of discrimination appear in The Sneetches and Other Stories (1961), in which a group of Sneetches with stars on their bellies mistreat Sneetches without stars. Additionally, The Lorax
(1971) addresses pollution and the importance of caring for our environment.

This 45-acre park includes not just one, but two water playgrounds. The River Play area features fountains and natural looking stones to explore, and the Pichler Family Fountain and Spray Park features rain curtains, interactive jets and nozzles as well as reflecting pools. Either way you go, your family will have fun, get wet and stay cool. • Sawyer Point & Yeatman’s Cove (705 E. Pete Rose Way) is free. The Otto Armleder Memorial Aquatic Fountain definitely cools you down on a hot day. Kids can run through the fountain’s geysers while a blast of water rains down from above. Afterwards, stroll down

After drying off, make sure to check out the tree-themed dry playground. There are tons of shade trees to relax under while the youngsters play.

Hours are 12 - 8 p.m. Mon - Sun, and 12 - 6 p.m. on holidays. • Season passes are $250 for a family, while daily passes are $5 ages 13 and older, $3 for ages 12 and younger and seniors. The Lil’ Kahuna’s waterworks features slides, geysers and sprayers, a lazy river, and two separate pools. For adventure seekers 45 inches and taller, there are skyscraper high slides. CONEY ISLAND (coneyislandpark.com) Swim and splash in more than 90 acres of Sunlite Pool at Coney Island (6201 Kellogg Ave.). The shallow edges are great for little swimmers to play in, so don’t forget your cups and buckets for your youngsters to enjoy. Typhoon Tower’s 72 interactive stations keep toddlers and kids entertained for hours — look out for the Hydro Storm
or you’ll get caught under 1,300 gallons of dumping water. Guests 36 inches and taller can twist and turn through the Twister Waterslide, and guests 48 inches and taller can enjoy The Cyclone and Pipeline Plunge. Looking to cannonball or belly flop? Dive in, literally, because Coney has three diving boards. All restrooms are equipped with diaper changing stations, and there are family restrooms located throughout the park. SOAK CITY AT KINGS ISLAND (visitkingsisland.com) Looking for variety? There are more than 50 water attractions at Soak City at Kings Island (6300 Kings Island Drive). Your little minnows can splash at Castaway Cove, medium fishies playing with sprayers and blasters at Splash Landing, or big fish taking the plunge on slides like the Aruba Tuba (36 inches and taller), Rendezvous Run, Thunder Falls, and the Zoom Flume (40 inches and taller). The taller your little one is, the more adventurous slides they can partake in … but if you need to relax, enjoy a slow inner tube down Splash River.
from the American Academy of Pediatrics (aap.org): • Babies have extra sensitive skin, infants 6 months and younger should preferably avoid sunscreen. Instead, seek shade and opt for lightweight pants and shirts, with a wide brimmed UV protectant hat. • Purchase UPF protective swimwear to ensure your little one’s skin is covered while swimming. Hats and sunglasses are cool, safe fashion statements. • Use a high SPF sunscreen, and make sure to reapply every two hours. • Avoid the sun and heat during peak hours, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. • Hydrate! If mom is nursing, be sure to drink extra water when you spend time in the heat. Baby will also need to refuel more, so offer an additional feeding session or bottle if you’re spending a day outside. Water or other drinks are not recommended for infants 6 months and younger, breast milk and formula are the best option unless your pediatrician says otherwise. For everyone 6 months and older — water is the way to go. Drink up and stay hydrated!

Spend time outdoors with the family and take a ride on a local bike trail for a great bonding experience.
ycling has taken a tremendous climb in the United States over the past decade. It has not just become popular for work commuters (i.e., Bike to Work Day), but it has changed the way some of us spend our free time. I decided to see what Cincinnati had in store for bike-lovers like myself. I am no competitive cyclist, but I enjoy opportunities to ride with my family and discover new routes, places and events. Loveland Bike Trail was our choice. It’s 70 miles long with more than 100 miles of various connections — the options are endless. You can begin anywhere along the trail and find picnic areas, parks, restaurants, coffee,

ice cream shops, rest rooms and even entertainment. The flat, concrete-paved trail is perfect for families with smaller children learning to ride a bike, or ready to take off and go. The trail is mostly shaded with peaceful wooded areas running along the Little Miami River. If you want to rent a bike, head to the Loveland Bike Rental (lovelandbikenrental.com) and choose two or six hours or all day. We rented an adult cruiser, an adult mountain bike to pull the baby trailer, and a kid’s bike. Just FYI, they don’t have training wheels at the rental shop, so plan on bringing your own. The kid’s bike had thin wheels and was a bit wobbly for my little guy, so we put him and the baby in the trailer and cruised to avoid
any frustration. The kids loved it. Now, which way to go? If we chose to go right, we’d head toward the city of Morrow and pass the Train Stop Inn, aka “The Monkey Bar,” (7837 Old 3C Hwy.) with a newly renovated patio overlooking the river. Or, we could go left toward Milford and Miami View Park. In the heart of Loveland, there are two fantastic ice cream shops, restaurants with outdoor seating, and a great picnic area and playground. We chose to go right thinking we’d hit up Loveland Sweets (lovelandsweets.com) on the way back. The trail was an easy-breezy ride. The kids enjoyed the scenery and munched on snacks while my husband and I pedaled like champs. Our tummies were

growling, so we thought we would park at the Train Stop Inn, have a bite and head back. Alas, we biked 5.5 miles to find the Inn is still in renovations. We grabbed chips from a food truck and had a good stretch. Oh, the simple things in life. We headed toward Loveland and stopped at the Trailside Café (123 Railroad Ave.) for barbecue. Of course, after we dropped off our bikes at the rental shop it was ice cream time. The summer is still young which means more bike rides are on the agenda. Next time, we will turn left! Devou Park (1344 Audubon Road, Covington) offers more challenging trails that older kids will love. Make a day of it and begin at the Devou Park Golf and Event Center, take a break at a picnic spot and stop to take a look at the Behringer-Crawford Museum. International Friendship Park (1135 Riverside Drive) has simple, smooth trails that are perfect for the little ones, plus you get a beautiful view of the Ohio River. You can even go for a longer ride and head to Sawyer Point and back. Lunken Airport (Wilmer Ave.) offers a five-mile loop around the airport that makes for a good ride.
Tune-ups
Paved paths can be found at Rentschler Forest and Voice of America in the MetroParks of Butler County system. Get a list of walking, running and other trails at yourmetroparks.net.
Cincinnati Bicycle (cincinnatibicycle.com) offers tuneups to repairs at reasonable prices.
The historic Spring Grove Cemetery (springgrove.org) is a wonderful spot for walks, pictures, picnics and yes, bike rides.
Central Park in Boone County (boonecountyky. org) offers a bike trail, and England Idlewild Park offers its own bike park with two pump tracks, a dual slalom course and three jump lines.
The Ohio River Trail is an ongoing project that will eventually connect trails in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Details on completed sections can be found at ohiorivertrail.org.

Baby Riders The American Academy of Pediatrics (healthychildren.org) recommends that babies be at least 12 months old before enjoying a cycling adventure, and should ride in a bicycle-towed child trailer or rear-mounted seat that is securely attached with spoke guards, and has a high back and sturdy shoulder harness and lap belt. Bikes with a trailer or rear seat should have an adult at the helm, and of course, helmets for everyone!
