WE’RE IN THE SAME BOAT

ome days I find myself wondering if I am in this parenting gig all alone. I wonder if I’m the only one who sometimes struggles to get my kids to listen, or just get in the car. I wonder if I’m the only one who starts the day skipping and playing with the kids, only for it to end in waterworks and exhaustion. Am I the only one who anticipates an exciting family outing only for it to result in a hopeless disaster? I don’t think so. This is one reason I love making mom friends — we meet at the park and watch our kids rumble and play. We laugh hysterically about how our kids have wild obsessions over Pokémon cards; or how we are really concerned with the way our kids tend to act out in public. But, they are great kids. Then, I see my 3-year-old practically naked on the playground. Yes, the embarrassing moment when it is actually my kid. I assess the situation then blow it off, turning to my mom friends with a nervous giggle. We can’t expect our kids to be perfect; they are experiencing their emotions, and of course, they are testing us, too. You may have a wellbehaved kid, but every little ball of energy has its moment. Relating to other parents can help us through this and help us find reasoning (if there is any). It always makes me feel better knowing I’m not in this alone. After talking to other parents, I no longer feel so embarrassed or puzzled. At one of my 7-year-old’s baseball games, an adorable little 2-yearold came wobbling around with her sippy cup, eager to become friends with my tot. They played, they were cute. They were behaving so nicely. Oh, there it is — the moment of truth. That sweet little girl gave my little gal’s hair a good yank. The mom apologized, and my little gal was just fine. Was I mad? No, way. Do I think that cute ball of fire is a monster? No way! She is still cute, she is still a toddler, and she is figuring out her feelings. The mom looked at me, looked around at the other kids playing “so nicely,” and wondered why her little one couldn’t join in on the trend. I laughed, and shared my relatable story, “You have no idea what really happens behind closed curtains!” It’s true! We don’t, which is why we shouldn’t judge. Was it my little girl that marked her territory on the brand new indoor playground? Yes, it was. Was it also my little girl who gave me extra hugs and kisses that night and told me how much she loves me? Yes, it was. It’s healthy to talk with other parents and bounce stories and ideas off one another. You will be surprised by how much you truly have in common. Talk about it, and don’t be ashamed to share your most embarrassing stories — in the end, you will feel better knowing another parent is in the same boat as you.

The recent Elephant Yard expansion allows the zoo’s resident pachyderms more space to explore, and in 2020, more changes are expected as a part of the “More Home to Roam” campaign. The new Roo Valley will be home to a 15,000-square-foot Kangaroo Walkabout, a Little Blue Penguin viewing area, an adventure ropes course for all abilities and a beer garden. The brand new Entry Village in 2020 will feature more family restrooms, a calming room and additional parking. Expect lots of new animals, too! • Masai Giraffes Tessa and Cece are expecting calves this summer and fall. • New flamingo chicks — and for those who love avian friends — the Eurasion eagle owl habitat, home to Archimedes and Minerva. • Painted Dog Valley in Africa has welcomed a rambunctious new pack of pups; there are five new females and five new males on exhibit.

he time is nearing when you’ll go back to work, and you need childcare for your baby. It’s an emotional decision and one not to be made lightly. To get your child into some of the most popular programs, your search should begin during pregnancy, but if you’re just starting out, begin by pinpointing the type of care you need. “Simply by knowing what kind of schedule is needed on a weekly or monthly basis makes a world of difference,” says Lauren Hardy, Owner of Sitting Made Simple Cincinnati. Determine if you need part- or full-time care, because child care is a giant expense and that will make a big difference to your monthly budget.

WHAT CAN YOU AFFORD? Know your numbers when you start looking for care so you can comparison shop based on what you can afford. You may believe that the dynamics of group day care will be best for your child or you may decide to pay top dollar for a nanny to care for your baby only. Costs vary by the age of your child, the maintenance required and the number of children in care, according to care.com. Also know that while costs can be relatively high,

it’s not necessarily true that high cost means best care.

QUALITY CARE The “quality” of your child’s care boils down to who directly cares for him. Regardless of what type of care you choose; i.e. in-home group care, part- or full-time child care or a nanny, you need to feel OK about your care providers first, and work to form a strong relationship with them. Identify a good care center by its director and the number of years it has been in business; its up-to-date credentials; clear rules and regulations; firm operating policies; and pickup and drop-off times. A great care situation has all of that plus longtime caregivers who keep up with current training and early childcare research.

our little one’s formal academic launching is all about preparation, and preschools vary on what they expect of incoming children. There are several steps you can take to improve your child’s preschool start, says Angie McDonald of 4C for Children, a local childcare referral service (preschools, too). “The best thing parents can do is be ready for children to get messy!” says McDonald. “That’s how they problem-solve and learn.” She adds that Ohio has developed what are known as Early Learning and Development Standards (education.ohio.gov), markers of a child’s social/emotional, cognitive, language/literacy, and gross/fine motor skill abilities. There is also attention paid to “Approaches Toward Learning,” which looks at a child’s attitude toward learning, initiative, curiosity, level of attention and motivation to try new experiences. Preschool programs can use these standards as a guideline for what children will accomplish during their time with their program. When researching preschools, McDonald advises parents to look for Ohio’s Step Up to Quality program, and Kentucky’s All STARS program. Both provide rating systems for preschool programs and programs participate voluntarily. Completion of certain milestones,

like a low student-to-teacher ratio, gives the school a higher rating. Learn more about each program at stepuptoquality.org or kentuckyallstars.ky.gov. Preschool readiness and success will really come down to finding the program that best suits your family’s needs. McDonald suggests touring and observing programs, and bringing your future preschooler with you to see how he reacts to the environment and the teachers. Be sure to interview with the school, too. Some of the things programs look for in your child when they assess them include: • Independence: kids taking on tasks for themselves (like putting on a coat or setting a table at lunch time). • Control: Children doing things in an orderly way and cleaning up afterward. • Concentration: Attending to a task until completion. • Order: Being able to recognize a beginning, middle and an end to tasks and projects, and completing the order of tasks. (This comes in handy as students progress to multi-step lessons.) — Susan Day

EYE EXAMS MATTER

ittle bodies change at a dizzying rate when kids are growing and their eyes are no exception. Eye problems affect one in 20 preschoolers and one in four school-age kids and can result in damage if left untreated. So why do so many parents put off getting their children eye exams? In a recent survey by Yougov, a global public opinion and data company, only 50 percent of parents in the U.S. said they take their kids for annual eye exams. With school-age kids, some parents don’t schedule an eye exam until they hear their child complain about blurriness or headaches. But kids often wait a long time before saying anything and that means months can go by where he’s not able to read his assignments accurately and is generally struggling to keep up because of it. Before children are diagnosed with a vision problem, they may think the way they see is normal — they sometimes don’t know the difference between clear vision and the way they see things, the American Academy of Ophthalmology reports. Here’s a schedule that you can work with to keep up with excellent eye care for your children:

NEWBORNS: Your pediatrician should examine your newborn’s eyes and perform a reflex test (basic indicator that Baby’s eyes are normal). If the baby is premature, an ophthalmologist should perform a comprehensive exam for signs of abnormalities, or if the family has a history of vision disorders in childhood. INFANT: A second screening for eye health should be done by a pediatrician or ophthalmologist at a well-child exam between 6 months and 1 year of age. PRESCHOOLERS: Between the ages of 3 and 3-and-a-half, your child’s vision and eye alignment should be assessed. BACK TO SCHOOL! In prepartion for school, or whenever a problem is suspected, your child’s eyes should be screened for visual acuity and alignment by your pediatrician. Nearsightedness is the most common refractive error in this age group and can be corrected with eyeglasses. If an alignment problem or other eye health issue is suspected, your pediatrician can refer you to an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive exam. — Susan Day
