nce Baby starts feeding himself spoon to mouth, the growing away from you begins. Your clinging on does, too. After all, you’re charged with the care and upkeep of this small soul for years to come. You’ll want to manage his life for a long time, but the human experience has other plans — I know. I have four children, and three of their bodies are adult size. My fourth is growing tall and reedy and still getting taller. It doesn’t matter if your kids are wild, sweet, funny, serious, outgoing or quiet — love opens your mother heart far and wide into places you never knew and you love your kids with an undeniable fierceness for your entire life. As you watch them climb, swim, run, leap, crash, race, swing and catapult, your heart marvels and wonders, palpitates and panics. You have no choice but to be steeped like a drenched tea bag right in the middle of their lives. It is marvelous … if you play it right. Huh? Play it right? Well, you can cling too much. You can hasten their growth away from you if you’re needy and insist on a lot of rules. Your kids will sense that you won’t let them do this, you won’t let them do that — and they’ll eventually do what they want anyway, on the sly. Or, you can raise a kid so accustomed to your deciding and doing everything for him that he can’t do anything for himself; he has to consult you first. If possible, simply become your child’s “bumper” in the bowling alley of life. Encourage a sense of freedom; freedom makes us happy. I made a point with each of my kids to teach them the wonder of being on your own in the world. On walks at the park together, I’d let my little ones loose saying, “GO!” And they’d run, run, run in total freedom. Faces flushed, they’d all eventually stop and look back for Mama. In our living room, we’d turn up music and dance, freely, improvising moves, doing whatever, free to express ourselves — no rules. Kids are not born in boxes, but soon enough the world enters in with rules, ideas, expectations ... and boxes that it wants you inside of so you are controlled. Part of your role as a mom is to get your child out of those boxes so he’s free to express himself and think creatively. So don’t cling on too much or make too many rules thinking you’re keeping them safe. One child at a time, you will have to let them go. Once your baby starts doing things for himself, it’s time to monitor and to begin the unfolding ... not the molding. With your secure self ... he will mold himself. And when you let him go one day ... he will go freely, loving you, and it WILL be beautiful.

uck season is here, and to keep things exciting, the Freestore Foodbank has thrown down the gauntlet, issuing a duck sales challenge to residents on the East and West sides of town, along with Northern Kentucky. On Saturday, Aug. 19, from 12 - 2 p.m., volunteers will compete in a friendly challenge to see who can sell the most ducks for the 23rd Annual Rubber Duck Regatta, held on Sunday, Sept. 3. Help teams out by making a duck purchase at the Kroger store in Delhi (5080 Delhi Ave.), Hyde Park (3760 Paxton Ave.), or Newport (130 Pavilion Pkwy.). Ducks are $5 each, or six for $25. DON’T MESS AROUND WITH STREP By Sherry Hang
Most sore throats in kids are viral, but they WILL see strep and you WILL be ready!
S
chool’s starting up again, and with that comes multiple viruses and bacterial infections, including the dreaded strep throat. We chatted with Kathryn O’Malley, M.D., F.A.A.P., from Muddy Creek Pediatrics, on the basics of strep throat. We also learned (as will you) about why it’s important to treat strep with antibiotics and to complete the full course of treatment, i.e. don’t let that pink bubblegum medicine get lost in the back of your refrigerator! Cincinnati Family: What makes Strep throat different from other infections like tonsillitis? Kathryn O’Malley: Tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils) can be caused by either viruses or bacteria. Most sore throats are caused by viruses. Streptococcus Group A is the most common bacterial cause, and about three out of 10 children with a sore throat will have strep. Sore throats caused by viruses do not need antibiotics. Sore throats caused by bacteria require

GET A CLOSER LOOK antibiotics. Strep is most common in school-age children. CF: What symptoms should parents watch for and at what point should the child see a doctor? KO: Parents should watch for moderate to severe sore throat, a fever of at least 101 degrees Fahrenheit, swollen glands in the neck, not wanting to eat or drink anything and vomiting. Sometimes you can see redness in the back of the throat. Sore throats caused by viruses typically have other respiratory, cold-like symptoms like a runny nose, cough, hoarse voice and red watery eyes. Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell the difference between sore throats caused by viruses and Strep throat (even for the doctor!) because the symptoms overlap a lot. White spots (exudate) on the tonsils can be associated with both Strep pharyngitis and viral pharyngitis. Only testing can definitively give a real answer: either an overnight throat culture, or a rapid antigen
test followed by an overnight throat culture if the rapid test is negative. If your child has fever and a sore throat, go to the doctor to check for strep throat (that day, if possible). If there is no fever and the sore throat has cold-like symptoms associated with it, wait two to three days and if not better or worsening, see the doctor. Parents should take any child to the emergency room (or call an ambulance if severe) if he is having trouble breathing or swallowing/ choking on secretions, drooling excessively or having a stiff neck. CF: What happens if strep throat goes untreated? KO: It’s important to finish the entire course of antibiotics even if all symptoms are gone in the first day or two. While Group A Strep can resolve on its own without treatment, the antibiotic reduces the length of the symptoms and helps reduce the spread of the germs to others. Another goal of treatment is to reduce the risk of complications of

Stretch summer out with the kids by enjoying a simple game, bike ride and maybe even a little fishing at this hidden gem on the West Side.
“C
ount to 100. No, 200,” the kids urged, before running to hide for a game of Hide and Seek. They hid under slides, inside slide tubes and beneath canopies. At “100,” a shout of “Ready or not, here I come” was followed by delighted squeals and running, while moms and grandparents watched the happy chaos from surrounding benches. The impromptu game of Hide and Seek happened in the playground area of Fernbank Park. Located at 50 Thornton Avenue, on Cincinnati’s west side, the park is just minutes from downtown, almost directly off Route 50. (Strangely, Siri took us to a blocked entrance, so follow the signs before turning in!) Cross over the railroad tracks and turn left into the 58-acre park. We passed the first lot, and parked in the one closer to the playground, bike rack, restrooms and water fountain. In addition to being a great place for Hide and Seek, the playground might also be a training ground for future American Ninja Warriors, with its many slides, rings, and monkey bars, along with a hand trolley

zipline, kid-sized rock wall, balance beam and more. Additionally, there’s a smaller-scale play area designed for the 2- to 5-year-old set. The Lovely River Fernbank’s greatest attraction is its spectacular view. Located on the banks of the Ohio River, the park offers a paved trail along its shoreline. Leashed dogs and owners joined walkers and runners the evening we visited; bicyclists seemed to especially enjoy the gentle slopes. Kids on scooters were cautioned by parents to “wait at the next tree” while they strolled behind. At 1.2 miles long, the trail takes visitors beneath shady trees, over a footbridge, and most importantly, beside the lovely river. We visited following a day of rain, so the park’s other path, the Sycamore Trail, proved too slippery to explore. It runs through the woods for a mile with peeks of the river through the trees. It’s rated “easy” and takes about a half hour to walk. Care to Drop a Line? In addition to the trails, another attraction at Fernbank is its bank fishing. Anglers are most likely to catch catfish, though bass and

walleye also live in the water. Kids 15 and younger are welcome to bank fish without cost, but anyone older than 16 needs an Ohio Fishing License, which can be purchased for one day, three day or annual usage. We didn’t do any fishing, but we did the next best thing — we sat on a bench, watched the river and relaxed. While watching the boats, barges and currents, I enjoyed bird watching, too. While I could only identify a cardinal with any certainty, nearby signage indicated that the bird I saw with a hint of blue might have been an indigo bunting. Additionally, the area provides homes for hawks, ospreys and even eagles, owls and more. Hungry visitors at or near Fernbank Park have a couple of options. There are plenty of picnic tables scattered throughout the park, along with a roomy shelter with grills. You’ll find fast food nearby, but turn right at the exit and enjoy more river views at Cabana on the River. It’s an outdoor bar and restaurant featuring pub food, live music and a fun atmosphere. aking a child to her first big, live performance NOT specifically designed for kids can be nerveracking. Will she sit still and pay attention? Will she refrain from incessantly kicking the seat in front of her? The answer is ... yes! With a little preparation on your part, it’s easy to turn a child into a good little theater goer

That means making sure kids are prepped to watch a show. Of course simple things like staying seated and not kicking seats are important, but you can also say, “We watch the show with our

eyes and our ears, but not our mouths” ... unless of course, something very funny happens, in which case it’s OK to laugh!
BEYOND THE BASICS
Preparing your child for a live show is not just about etiquette, Justice says. It’s natural for kids to have questions about where you are taking them and then once there, about what’s happening on

stage. Justice says to take time beforehand to explain to your child what the show’s about and what’s going to happen. You can say, for instance, “We’re going to see Mary Poppins. We’ve watched that on TV, but now we’re going to see it on the stage!” This preps your child in a wonderful way. You can even play the music before hand to build her enthusiasm. Also prior to seeing a show, give your child ideas on what to look for, and encourage her to save her questions for intermission or after the show. With a little prep kids can feel ready for things like the theater going dark, special effects, bright lights and loud noises, and even a wicked character or two. TCT offers a play-by-play guide for productions on its website (thechildrenstheatre. com). The guides can be a big help in preparing kids prior to seeing a show. Of course, a treat in the theater can be helpful to kids — just make sure wrappers are unwrapped before the show begins!
PRACTICE GOING
There are lots of kid-friendly shows to see in our area, so start with one of those before taking your child to, say, the opera. “The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is the perfect place to take risks!” says Justice. With inexpensive shows only one hour long, produced specifically for young audiences, TCT is a definite go-to for theater newbies. Actors are trained not to be thrown off-guard by audience reactions. This season’s MainStage lineup includes Peter Pan Jr. (Oct. 21 - 30); Cinderella (Dec. 9 - 18); Dreamworks’ Madagascar: A Musical Adventure (Feb. 10 - 19, 2018);
and Mary Poppins (April 7 - 16, 2018). If your child’s ready for a more intimate setting, check out the Showtime Stage series, in the 150-seat theatre at TCT’s new facility on Red Bank Road. Be sure to visit the website before attending for helpful tips on what to do if she becomes restless during a performance (hint: think about purchasing seats near the back of the theatre for a quick escape to the lobby if needed!). The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra’s Lollipop concerts (cincinnatisymphony.org) are another great opportunity for little ones. “I promise it will be louder than your kids!” Justice says. This year’s lineup includes The Polar Express: A Musical Storybook (Nov. 25), Mozart’s Neighborhood (Feb. 3, 2018), and Lemony Snicket: The Composer is Dead (April 28, 2018). Although they’re not live, movies are another good place to practice, says Justice. “If kids can sit through a Disney movie, they can make it through a one-hour performance.” Story times at local libraries are another great source for practicing with kids. Check library schedules for the ArtReach touring division, along with performances from local groups like Madcap Puppets (madcappuppets. com), Wump Mucket Puppets (wumpmucketpuppets.com) or the Frisch Marionettes (frischmarionettes.com). Or, check out TCT in Story Tree Time at Cincinnati Museum Center (cincymuseum.org).

Check out these venues and organizations for upcoming live performances: Acting Up Children’s Theatre (actingup.com) is a volunteer theatre organization that offers kids the chance to see their peers on stage with productions that features casts of dozens of young actors. The Beechmont Players (beechmontplayers.org) is a volunteer community theatre group that offers a range of productions for all ages, including plays like The Secret Garden and the upcoming James and the Giant Peach at the Anderson Center from Aug. 4 - 12. The Children’s Theatre of Mason (childrenstheatreofmason. com) is another local organization that puts children onstage as well as behind-the-scenes, working on set building, crew members and more. Cincinnati Ballet’s (cballet. org) annual presentation of Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker is ideal for young audiences, but don’t count out their other productions, especially their springtime performance, Family Series: Beauty and the Beast, coming in April 2018. Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s (cincyplay.com) Off the Hill series is a traveling theater series that takes short, kid-friendly performances to local libraries,
community centers, arts centers and more. Get this season’s schedule online. Fitton Family Fridays at the Fitton Center (fittoncenter.org) include everything from plays by local theater groups to interactive concerts and even national comedy acts. It’s a good time for all with a reception before the show to get kids warmed up. Inspiring Arts Productions (inspiringartsproductions.com) offers family-friendly performances, including this month’s Crazy For You, a toe-tapping sendup to the work that goes into putting on the biggest show a small-town has ever seen. The Linton Chamber of Music (lintonmusic.org) offers a fun musical series called Peanut Butter n’ Jam for ages 2 - 6 and their families. Kids get to learn about individual instruments in these interactive concerts held at various venues throughout the city. UC Clermont’s Calico Children’s Theatre series (ucclermont.edu/community/ arts/calico-theatre.html) offers an affordable intro to theater with productions designed to spark curiosity and impart valuable lessons. The Rosenthal Education Center (REC) is a haven for little art enthusiasts. The center is stocked with art supplies and hands-on activities. Check out one of the weekly REC Reads programs, a 30-minute event where toddlers and preschoolers hear stories, sing songs and participate in immersive sensory activities. Then, stay and explore the current “pattern and texture” theme at the REC. The CAM is friendly towards young Picasso’s. Family restrooms are located on the ground and first floors, and all handicap accessible restrooms are equipped with diaper changing stations. Strollers are permitted, but you can borrow a free one from a limited supply near the main entrance. You can also check out a “See Play Learn Kit” from the visitors services desk, to get the most of your visit. These borrowed kits include a map, flashcards with critical thinking questions, a puppet, binoculars, a magnetic puzzle, two children’s books about art and a sketchbook with pencils. If you
work up an appetite, the Terrace Cafe offers lunches, or pack a picnic for nearby Eden Park.
