Mona Lisa’s Alive!
W
hen I was a teenager, I ignored my mother’s order not to go see The Exorcist. The theater was packed when I walked down the narrow aisle with my boyfriend and crammed into too-tight seats oblivious to her plea. She knew I had a wild imagination that could get the better of me and she was right. I hated that movie. Served me right. I spent half of the movie with my eyes shut, twisting around in my seat, trying to hide. Nightmares woke me up at night for days after that. The stouter hearted among us enjoy screamer movies, haunted houses and being scared to death by ghouls. We fainter-hearted souls are weanies to these antics. We enjoy this time of year for the fall leaves and cooler air, the pumpkin spice and all of that, but our imaginations can easily get the best of us when face-to-face with a shrieking, eye-bulging thing. Even today if I dare to watch a scary movie, I keep a safety mantra in my head: It’s just a movie, it’s just a movie, it’s just a movie. When you have a rich imagination, you’re capable of extending it to believe all wonderful and glorious things, but also you’re susceptible to the bad and the ugly. That’s why I believed that the Wooden Lady from The Secret of the Wooden Lady was after me. It’s why I had a recurring nightmare I called “The Tan Lady.” And it’s why, when I shared a bedroom with my younger sister on the third floor of our Revolutionary War-era home, that I believed the real Mona Lisa was chasing me down the rickety stairs sometimes. (My father wrote up there in an adjacent office; an oversized Mona Lisa poster hung on his wall, and I believed she had it in for me). All of this is to say that this month you should keep your individual children in mind as we ramp up to Halloween: some kids can take it, others cannot. For some reason, Halloween never scared me as a kid, but costumes are a lot more intense now than they used to be with friendly neighborhood hatchet murderers on every corner. And DO remember that if you plan to dress up, be careful. I was a witch one year, thinking nothing of it. I added a wicked cackle and got into acting all hunch-backed and scary. I ended up searing my 3-yearold’s imagination that night to the point of giving HIM nightmares! Play up the fun of the season, and play down the scary. Not everyone enjoys having the living daylights scared out of them. And for the record, I’m still leary of the Mona Lisa. What IS she thinking anyway?

WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THAT HALLOWEEN CANDY?! — READER POST OF THE MONTH — With Halloween on the way, kids speculate all month long about how much candy they’ll rack up. Meanwhile, parents have plans of their own that don’t quite jive with the kids’! Local Moms Say: “Our school usually has a drive to take candy to the soldiers. We also do science experiments with some or save it to make cookies during Thanksgiving and Christmas.” Deb Kellmel
“We let them go crazy when they get home from trick-or-treating and then it’s all put up and given out for a treat or dessert after dinners.” Andrea McCarren
“Halloween fairy. They can keep their candy or leave it out for the fairy who takes it and leaves them a surprise instead.” Natalie Wildfong Williams
“After a few days my kids forget about the candy. That’s when I get rid of it!”
Teal Pumpkins Everywhere! Looks like we’ll all be seeing teal this year, but just in case you’re behind on the teal-pumpkin craze, we want to catch you up: It’s The Teal Pumpkin Project (foodallergy.org/teal-pumpkinproject) run by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). It gives every child the chance to experience the fun of trick-or-treating without the fear of getting candy with ingredients they’ll have a reaction to. You can help spread the word. Here’s what to do: 1. Place a teal pumpkin in front of your home to indicate that you have non-food treats available. 2. Provide non-food treats for trick-ortreaters.
SEE RUDOLPH LIVE! The beloved TV classic Rudolph The RedNosed Reindeer soars off the screen and onto the stage this holiday season. See all of your favorite characters from the special including Santa and Mrs. Claus, Hermey the Elf, Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster, Clarice, Yukon Cornelius and, of course, Rudolph, as they come to life in Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical. The show hits the stage at Aronoff Center for the Arts on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $32 - $62. Learn more at cincinnatiarts.org. We’re giving away a four-pack of tickets to see the show to one lucky winner! Visit us online to register.

LOTS TO SEE & DO AT THE ZOO By Barbara Littner David
Hippos, polar bears and more delight all ages at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden.
G
radually, my sons and I inched through the crowd, and finally edged into a spot in front of Hippo Cove’s 70,000-gallon pool. For several seconds, maybe minutes, we could only see fish, which are there, the Zoo guide said, to eat the waste of the hippopotamuses. Then, someone shouted, “Here he comes!” and 4,000 pounds of hippo glided by — its tiny hind leg stumps looked incapable of holding its massive body. Then its head surfaced. Its cute rounded ears, eyes and nose give little hint of the animals’ known ferocity, which we witnessed, on a minor scale, as the hippo bumped into its companion, and the two bellowed at one another. Hippo Cove, the newest exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, houses two hippopotamuses — Henry, a 34-year-old male, and Bibi, a 17-year-old female. Wendy Rice, the Zoo’s head keeper of the Africa exhibit, says that Henry and Bibi have already become friends. “The two have now been fully introduced and all indications suggest that they’re compatible and happy to be with each other.” Kids are happy in the recently completed Africa section, too. In the new play area, kids can climb on rocks and hippo statues, try out a ropes course and learn through interactive

activities. Additionally, within the exhibit itself, there’s a special viewing window close to the ground just for kids; there’s another cool window nearby in the meerkat exhibit. As we watched the playful animals, we continually heard boys and girls call out, “Oh, I want to go in that!” as they pointed to a bubble window in the midst of the exhibit at eye level with the meerkats. From Africa, we followed paw prints to more of the Zoos’ 500 animal species — trekking active gorillas, resting tigers, pacing mountain lions and graceful manatees. Along the way, we touched a dragon, saw snakes and watched the baby giraffe run to its mother. Meanwhile, my boys took selfies, shared their pictures with the Zoo’s new WiFi network and caught Pokémon. “What could be better? Animals and Pokémon!” my youngest said, also noting that there are 26 Pokéstops and two gyms. His older brother added, “They’re different Pokémon, too.” In a shady picnic area, they compared their catches as we relaxed at a table, glad that the Zoo actually allows visitors to bring in coolers with soft drinks and snacks. While we ate, I admired the lush flowers and surrounding bamboo forests, just a few of the 3,000 plant species in the Zoo’s botanical garden. We also noticed strings of Christmas lights tucked among some of the beautiful foliage. The Zoo

uses nearly 2 million lights for its spectacular Festival of Lights in the Winter. The holiday event runs Nov. 19, 2016 - Jan. 1, 2017, and will feature a new Wild Light show on Swan Lake, performances by Madcap Puppets and visits with Santa. This month though, the Zoo presents its annual HallZOOween. On Saturdays and Sundays from Oct. 8 - 30, kids 12 and younger can dress up and trick-or-treat throughout the Zoo, while searching for a golden Big Boy statue. Two of the iconic figures are hidden each day, and the lucky finder wins a prize package valued at $150. Additionally, Phil Dalton’s Theater of Illusion will perform magic in the Wings of Wonder Theater, and the Zoo will offer special animal encounters and Halloween animal meet and greets. Barbara Littner David is a local writer and mother of five. She’s the author of Cincinnati Trips for Kids, a collection of Cincinnati-area attractions.

THE ARRIVAL OF FALL means that it’s cold and flu season! While there is no cure for the common cold, there’s a number of things you can do to keep your child comfortable. • Encourage fluids, although most youngsters with a cold usually don’t want to eat! • Use a cool mist vaporizer for congestion • Control fever with appropriate doses of ibuprofen or acetaminophen • Saline nose drops are helpful for nasal congestion – 2 drops in each nostril, wait one minute and suck out with a bulb syringe • And don’t forget to call our office to schedule an appointment for your child’s flu vaccine!

HANDLING YOUR YOUNG CHILD’S
FEARS Sometimes they’re normal, sometimes they’re not ...
“P
lease turn on the bathroom light ... and the hall light ... and my nightlight,” says nearly every little kid in the month of October (if not year-round). With scary decorations popping up in the stores and all the spooks and haunts of the season being talked about by one and all, it’s easy to see how your young child can get scared. When it comes to Halloween, he’s excited about picking out his own costume and going door-to-door for candy, but unfortunately, Halloween can also bring other things up for him … like fear. Fear of kids in costumes like zombies, werewolves, Scream masks and more. Fear of walking up to homes or in stores decorated with gravestones, skeletons, vampires and monsters that are designed to make children jump when they get close. In a study, Pennsylvania State University psychologist Cindy Dell Clark found that most parents underestimate just how terrifying Halloween can be for young kids. Many young children are unable to differentiate what’s real and what’s pretend. This inability to differentiate can cause kids anxiety/fear. Unfortunately, you’re not going to be able to completely shelter your child from things that scare him. Help him get through Halloween
and other fears by reminding him what’s real and what’s not, and gently exposing him to what causes his fear.
FEAR’S NORMAL Fears are a normal part of growing up, in a sense a “rite of passage,” and typically disappear as children grow older. Jennifer Wells, LISW-S, and Nicole Bosse, PsyD, with the Linder Center of HOPE concur that, “Childhood fears are developmentally appropriate and most ‘fix’ themselves over time.” Childhood fears often change as kids grow older and understand more about the world around them. You can only hope that your child will outgrow his fears, but rarely, the opposite occurs, and the fear gains more impact on daily life — especially if the cause of the fear is hard to avoid (e.g., dogs/storms). Fears that last extensively can manifest into anxiety or a phobia, which is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Some common childhood fears include: Fears for Infants/Toddlers • Loud noises or sudden movements • Strangers • Separation • Changes in the house • Large/unfamiliar objects
Fears during Preschool Years • Noises at night • Masks • The dark • Insects • Monsters and ghosts • Animals Fears during School Years • Storms/Natural disasters • Being home alone • Snakes/spiders • Criticism/punishment • Scary news/TV shows • Injury, illness, doctors, shots or death • Fear of failure, rejection or social embarrassment
INSTINCTUAL FEAR Some fears are biologically helpful and can keep children safe. They are, in a sense, an “insurance” policy. Children can be fearful of water unless they know how to swim. If a child has heard that dogs bite, he may think they ALL do without some safe interaction. Some fear is inherently instinctual and helps kids stay alert and safe. Speaking of safety, society puts things in place to keep people safe, such as fire drills and tornato sirens. It’s important that you talk to (please turn the page)

HANDLING YOUR CHILD’S
FEARS your children to ensure them that all is well for the most part and that there is no need to worry. Books to Help Kids Cope • Franklin in the Dark by Paulette Bourgeois • There’s an Alligator Under My Bed by Mercer Mayer • Curious George Goes to the Hospital by Margret Ray and H.A. Rey • Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt
EASE SIMPLE HALLOWEEN FEARS • PREPARE YOUR CHILD EARLY BY EXPLAINING HOW PEOPLE LIKE TO DRESS UP. • EXPOSE THE FAKE ABOUT SCARY HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS.
Ways to help your child cope with fears and anxiety: • Read books about characters who have overcome fears. • Ask why he’s scared. It’s sometimes not what you think. Acknowledge the fear without reinforcing or increasing his concerns. • Expose him to things that may be frightening to him. Help him face his fears but don’t force him and know his limits. • Model calmness for him. • Explain what’s real and what’s pretend. • Have him draw a picture of what scares him and how he could worry less. • Have him teach you about what he’s scared of — this can help him understand facts versus irrational fear. • Be honest! Wells says, “If you tell a child it isn’t going to hurt, but it really does hurt, the lie can reduce your child’s trust.” Explain that the pain is only temporary.
• IF YOU HAVE LITTLE KIDS, KEEP YOUR DECORATIONS SPOOK-FREE.
• Be sympathetic and do not try to persuade him into being fearless.
• MAKE FUN — AS OPPOSED TO SCARY — HALLOWEEN PLANS WITH YOUR KIDS.
Helpful Resources:
WHEN FEAR TURNS INTO ANXIETY Sometimes kid fears can grow into anxiety. This occurs when there’s no instant threat to your child’s safety or well-being, but the danger feels real and the self protecting fears are exaggerated. It’s one of the top reasons kids are referred for mental health help; if your child exhibits unusual amounts of anxiety, it’s important to get support. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s website states, “When fears do not fade and begin to interfere with daily life and activities, an anxiety disorder may be present.”
• lindnercenterofhope.org • worrywisekids.org • Seven Steps to Help Your Child Worry Less by Kristy Hagar PhD and et all. • Freeing Your Child from Anxiety by Tamar E. Chansky, PH. D. When to Call the Doctor: • If your child’s fears are repeatedly unreasonable in relation to circumstances • Your child’s fear is not typical for his age • Fear is impacting your child’s daily life • Anxiety is preventing your child from going to school and doing activities he wants to do Seek help early if you have concerns! OCD lindnercenterofhope.org or iocdf.org Excessive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by unreasonable thoughts and fears (obsessions) that lead to compulsive behaviors. OCD often centers on themes such as a fear of germs or the need to arrange objects in a specific manner. Symptoms usually begin gradually and vary throughout life. PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) pandasnetwork.org A very rare obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or tic disorder that suddenly appears following a strep infection (such as strep throat or scarlet fever); or the symptoms of OCD or tic symptoms suddenly become worse after such infection. The symptoms are usually dramatic, happen “overnight and out of the blue,” and can include motor and/or vocal tics, obsessions and/or compulsions. They’re extremely patient with her and do everything they can to make her laugh and help the process go smoothly. We’ll be with them for a while! (Plus the cool Sea decor in the waiting room is a BIG bonus. What two year old doesn’t like slides and fish?!)”
“My kids can’t wait to go to the dentist...enough said! Every single member of the staff is exceptional, as if they were trained by Walt Disney himself. I don’t have enough good things to say about Dr. Greenhill. He is thorough, patient, and genuinely loves the kids.”
