the little things BY AMANDA HAYWARD

These Days Are Not Those Days

I

felt so free — zipping around on my bike following my older brother’s tracks, peddling vigorously to keep up with him and his friends. We would ride for hours, all over the neighborhood and beyond. No cell phones to check in, no GPS signal in case we got lost. Just us against the world. As I grew older, I spent long summer weekends with my cousins. I couldn’t wait to make the drive down to Kentucky so we could do nothing but ride on two wheels, spend all day outside doing who knows what and I couldn’t wait to smell that extra sense of freedom as we biked down the unbeaten path to the nearest UDF. Rainbow sherbet was my go-to; that feeling of buying something with my own money really made me feel all grown up. Those were the days! Those days, and our parents’ days, were a lot different than these days. I want to give my 9-year-old, Will, that kind of freedom, but then my worries get in the way: What if he falls off his bike? What if someone comes speeding through the neighborhood and he panics? What if? It’s just how it is. This is our generation, and it is different from past generations. I think to accept that is important, and to be told otherwise, i.e., “Back in my day we used to … ” is irritating. Because we don’t live “back in my day” anymore. It’s tough being a millennial parent! That’s great that “back in my day” there were no cell phones or tablets and maybe they had one television in their house; or they spent every waking moment outdoors playing in the creek because that’s just how it was those days. We can let go of the pressure of trying to relive our childhood through our kids because this is the world we live in now. The world seems a bit scarier these days, the roads are a bit busier, there is a lot of uncertainty, parents are more careful and involved - so we have to make the best decisions these days and accept that things are just, different. I see other kids roaming our neighborhood, far more younger than my kids — no helmet, no grown-ups. I wonder if I’m being too strict because I only let my kids go to “where I can see them,” or sometimes I’ll let Will go to the stop sign and back. They can play out back, in the front yard and ride to their heart’s content, but not completely out of my sight. Does that make me a helicopter parent? I sure hope not. I’m just being a good mom looking out for my kids. This is just the generation we live in. The day they grow old enough to soar a bit further, that will be great - for them, for me. Kids need that independence, but they need to be old enough to know the rules; know when to call and know what to do in an emergency situation. We can look at it this way: We have many luxuries these days — kids’ GPS watches, cell phones at a younger age so they can call after soccer practice, better home security, better research — that can work in our favor to better communicate with our kids and keep them safe. It’s really not all that bad these days, so let’s just live it, let our kids be kids and be confident in the family decisions we make.

kids’ health the truth about prenatal care By Amanda Hayward

What you eat and drink affects Baby’s brain development. But don’t worry, Mama — we’ve got

Y

you covered!

ou may have worried about that girls’ night out and one too many cocktails just before learning you were pregnant. Or what about those antibiotics you had to take and found out a week later you were carrying a bundle? You can worry yourself into a tizzy, but more than likely, everything’s going to be just fine. Yes, your baby’s brain and spinal cord begin to form just past four weeks from your last period, according to Dena Costa, M.D., OB/Gyn at the Christ Hospital. But will those cocktails affect your baby’s brain that early on? “There are unlikely to be significant effects from a one-time alcohol consumption in early pregnancy,” assures Costa. “However, the safest thing to do is to avoid any alcohol use if there is a chance you are or could become pregnant,” she adds.

Excessive use of alcohol during pregnancy can cause complications, according to Costa. “There are genetic variations both in how women process alcohol and in how susceptible babies are to the effects of alcohol in the womb, meaning it is difficult to confirm any ‘safe’ level of alcohol consumption in pregnancy. Babies can be at risk anytime during the pregnancy as well,” she adds.

BABY AND MOM’S HEALTH Taking care of your health is the most important thing you can do when you’re expecting. This will keep you on your feet (exercise) and it will keep Baby healthy, too. “Eating a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and a few different sources of protein is the best way to get the nutrients that your baby needs,” says Costa. Avoid what we know can harm the growing baby: alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs — and just keep moving! Exercise like prenatal yoga and walking is encouraged to help make your labor go smoothly, minimize back pain and decrease stress and anxiety. “For most women, continuing a baseline level of exercise is fine with just a few modifications as pregnancy progresses,” says Costa.

And keep an eye on your weight gain; the “normal” weight gain is 25 - 35 pounds. Too much gainage can increase the chances of a big baby at birth plus it’s been linked to increased rates of obesity in childhood and later on.

KEEPING THE NUTRIENTS DOWN You take your prenatal vitamins (loaded with folic acid and DHA), and you’re trying to eat right, but what if you experience nausea throughout pregnancy? “The good news is babies are pretty resilient (and a little bit selfish!),” Costa says. “They are generally going to take what they need before Mom gets what she needs. Unless someone is truly malnourished they generally are able to keep up with adequate calorie and nutrient intake to support the pregnancy.” So take those prenatal vitamins and eat as healthily as you can. A chocolate and Cheeto splurge is OK every now and then, just not all the time. “There are going to be many years ahead to stress and worry about this little one – give yourself grace during pregnancy and trust that you are doing the best you can for your baby,” says Costa. Amanda Hayward is editor of this publication and a mom of two. (please turn the page)

Family Fun Yes, it’s different this year, but set your worries aside and make it memorable for your kids with fun tricks and treats!

Hallo

A Non-

Head to a Local Pumpkin Patch

“TRICK OR TREAT!” THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX If you aren’t going door-to-door around your neighborhood, trick-ortreat at home! Decorate each room, have someone behind the door in each spooky space and the kids can get their candy buckets filled. If you are handing out treats this year, keep hand sanitizer handy for each time you drop some treats, and of course, wear your mask.

DO A ‘LIL BOOING! We are all in need of some human interaction. Have a little fun and “boo” some friends in your neighborhood! Make some treats bags or buckets with the kids (find ideas on Cincinnati Family’s Pinterest board), and safely drop off a bag of goodies at your neighbor’s doorstep by ringing or knocking and disappearing! Perhaps the kids might even get a surprise at their doorstep in return.

Research events before you go and see what they are doing to abide by health and safety guidelines. If they are safely open, dress up in your Halloween-costume-best and pick out some pumpkins and even check out some sweet treats the farm offers to really spice up your day. You may be surprised at what socially distanced kids’ activities they are pulling off this year, too!

Throw the Best. Party. Ever. You can throw the best at-home party this year minus the expenses. Let’s get real, parenting during the pandemic is hard enough, so choose two or three simple activities and keep to your budget. We are all under some financial constraints right now, so less is better! Shop Amazon for some simple, spooky Halloween banners, black and orange balloons and Halloween baggies for the kids. Fill up the bags with a mix of candy and healthy treats they can eat with their lunch the following week. If you have smaller kiddos, opt for less scary decor. Painting pumpkins is a great way to get the kids involved, plus they make a great Halloween decoration. Stock up on washable paint and Halloween-themed stickers and take it away. Don’t forget the Kids Bop Halloween Party mix on Spotify and host a dance party to top off the night.

Halloween Countdown Kids love counting down to the last day of school, their birthday, and any favorite celebration, really. Begin on October 1 and go from there. Grab a cheap sticker chart from Target and have the kids add a sticker up until the big day. If you want to make it more intriguing, hand a piece of candy out every 5 - 10 days, but the countdown is exciting all in itself.
