his time of year gets me warm and fuzzy for obvious reasons: cozy sweaters, soothing cups of tea, baking cookies and simmering dinners in the Crock-Pot when we get home. Ahhhh. But this time of year also brings one’ s children sharply into focus. Now that the school year’s humming along and first report cards are out, you should have a pretty good picture of how your kids are doing in school. You have had, or are soon to have, your parent/teacher conferences. If your ear hasn’t been to the ground — meaning firmly tuned-in to other moms in-theknow — you might be surprised to learn things about your children that you didn’t know. You have to make efforts to be connected to each one of your kids more than ever: Who are their friends? What are their days like when they’re away from you? What are their favorite subjects? Are they reading enough? Courteous enough? Caring enough? I am thinking about my middle boy . And the broken pencils I found in his room. He only breaks a pencil when he’s stressed. And I immediately wonder what’s going on. It’s true I can expect too much of my kids. I’m not sure that I’m right to be that way, and I would LOVE to hear back from you on this, so when you finish reading, take a sec to send a note. Of late, I’ve been second guessing myself about my boy. He’s wicked smart, athletically talented but also going through adolescence. When he was a little boy, he was sunny, courageous and he sang his way through the days. Good grades came easy. I know that at 14 it’s difficult to carry the load that his busy life requires, but I think he’s carrying TOO much. He’s an ice hockey AND soccer player and he has very little time to just hang out and be an amiable guy . He has to study in his downtime to get good grades. His sports activities keep him busy almost every day of the week after school — is that why I found not one, but several, broken pencils in his room. If all that I want to do during this fall season is curl up and read and start dreaming about the holidays and fixing things up at home — he’ s gotta feel some of that for himself, too. Running around on sports fields and hunkering down with school books, getting up at 6 a.m. and home at 8 p.m. three nights a week ... it’s no wonder there’s broken pencils! So I need to find ways to just bring him comfort and joy . Simple things to help him along ... so he can feel the support he must be needing. Scratch his back. Cook yummy meals. Hug him more. It’s no wonder that on these cooler days and nights ... with the promise of winter and change in the air ... we need room to dream of other possibilities. We need to see that there’s so much more to life beyond our small individual worlds. I so want my kids to be aware of ALL the possibilities and ALL of the different things and people out there in the world. I am so thankful for my family . For my children. For all of this goodness. I hope he feels that way. With a teenage boy you can’t just come at him and say, “Hey, are you OK?” He’ll look at you like you’re strange. So instead, I’ll just take the pencils as the cue I need. I think he needs to know deep down inside that we’ve got his back. And we do. We really do. ‘Nuf said.

cold and flu season! While there is no cure for the common cold, there are a number of things you can do to keep your child comfortable. Encourage fluids, although most youngsters with colds usually don’t want to eat! Use a cool mist vaporizer for congestion. Control fever with appropriate doses of ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Saline nose drops are helpful for nasal congestion – 2 drops in each nostril, wait one minute and suck out with a bulb syringe. emperatures are dropping and will soon drop even more as we head into the winter months. But don’t let the cold keep the kids from enjoying the outdoors! Dress them for the weather, thinking “layers.” Start with a base layer that keeps away moisture (unlike cotton), and add a second layer of fleece or wool. Keep your layers thin when you can, so that your mobility isn’t restricted. Your third layer should help cut the wind, but it should also be waterrepellent since your little one is likely to take a tumble in the snow. If it’s cold enough for a winter jacket, aim for those with vents in the sides. Be sure to look for jackets that Velcro or elastic around the cuffs and hem — it will help keep air out and hold gloves and mittens in place. Gloves will give your kids more flexibility than mittens, and they shouldn’t need a scarf if their outer layer covers their neck or if they are wearing a “gator” (a looped piece of fleece they can pull over their head). Scarves can have a tendency to unravel and get caught on sleds or tree branches. CINCINNATI PARKS has plenty of ideas for family fun this winter, and many of their activities are held outdoors. Get into the spirit of holiday baking with a visit to Young Chef’s Academy, where kids (and parents!) can learn some yummy baking tips.

y boys shook the raw eggs, trapping the yolks in their hands and letting the whites ooze through their slimed fingers. The whites collected in a blue bowl, and when the dripping stopped, they slid the yolks into a green bowl. Next, it was time to wash their hands, again. Separating eggs was just one of the things my youngest kids learned at the Young Chef’s Academy. Located in Mason, Ohio, the academy of fers KinderCooks for kids ages 3 - 5, Senior Chefs for 13-16 year olds, and Junior Chefs for the kids in between. There are also party packages and events for adults. Our Young Chef’s class lasted about an hour , and involved the creation and tasting of two delicious dishes. Before we arrived, I filled out registration and release forms and gave these to the kids’ teacher, Miss Chelesa. I stuck around for the class, but parents may simply drop of f kids who are over the age of 5. After greeting my boys, and introducing them to the other young chefs, who preferred to go by nicknames for the evening, Miss Chelsea tied white aprons on children and directed them to wash their hands. While we waited for any other arrivals, she invited the young chefs to peruse the evening’s two recipes, or to draw with markers until it was time to begin. In fact one little girl elected to continue drawing throughout the class, even on the refrigerator (with washable markers, I presume), and while she was gently invited back every step of the way, she was never pressured to participate. Perhaps that’s because there are “no mean teachers” at Young Chef’s Academy, and no homework, “unless you want some, like eating what we cooked at home, or making the recipe again.” W e learned these facts along with the rules, that include “No horseplay, no pushing, no shoving,” and “no cartwheels,” added the marker-wielding young lady. There’s also no running around with knives or scissors, or goofing of f by the stove. Fortunately , the kids were well behaved, and Miss Chelsea never needed to remind anyone to follow these rules or “to respect themselves and others.” Before beginning, Miss Chelsea asked for volunteers to read the recipe. They read it all the way through “so we know what we need, and what we’re doing.” From there, the class was very hands on. The kids did everything, working in teams, and on their own. They learned about measurements, wet and dry ingredients (I didn’t know sugar is a wet ingredient), how to whip egg whites, and how to fold them into other mixtures. Time management played an important role in the class, too. The base for the egg pinwheels went into the oven, while work started on the muf fins. Clean up, along with extra hand washing, happened throughout the class. Miss Chelsea of fered precautions about salmonella, and other potential dangers, and used her sense of humor whenever possible. “W e always wear gloves when we grate cheese, because the grater is super sharp and you don’t want bloody cheese.”

Fortunately, no bodily fluids or foreign substances landed in the food, though there was perhaps “too much nutmeg” in the Cinnamon Sugar Donut Muffins. We sampled these, along with the Egg Pinwheels stuf fed with cheese and crumbled bacon, and some orange juice, and found them all very delicious, and a few days later the recipes arrived in my email, ready for us to try at home. Facing a medical crisis can be intimidating. But when it comes to your child’s health, it’s all about trusting your instincts.

y 10-year-old son Joey woke in the morning with pain. He struggled to get out of bed but then fell to the ground. He found his balance but limped throughout the house. He started using crutches because of the excruciating pain in his right leg. After a few weeks of what seemed like a pulled muscle, I took him to the pediatrician. The pain was worsening and spreading through the leg. The pediatrician ordered X-rays and blood work but it showed nothing. The doctor told me she didn’t see a need to do further testing. I called the nurse a few days later, when it was even worse, but was asked if I had considered he could be faking. I was appalled. Even if he was exaggerating, he was not faking. He limped all the time. He wouldn’t do any activity at all; he wouldn’t even walk to the neighborhood candy store. I decided to have him seen by a local orthopedic doctor who ended up refusing to order the MRI I asked for saying it was probably growing pains and that the test would be stressful. Growing pains? He couldn’t walk at all some days. I didn’t know what to do. Speaking up to a doctor can be very intimidating. As parents, we expect the doctor to be the expert and aren’t always sure how to insist they follow our own instincts. We even begin to doubt our instincts when the professionals say everything is OK.

Make Yourself Heard According to online resource Momtastic, when it comes to advocating for your child, you have to make sure your concerns are heard. Parents need to know the value of their own observations of their children. Be sure to look directly at the doctor and explain the change in behavior or health your child has exhibited. Be persistent, even if that means going to the doctor several times in a week or month. I actually called the doctor at least four or five times plus had a few visits before we got the referral we needed. Ask questions and do research. I researched every possible thing I could think of that would cause leg pain. I learned about ailments I had never heard of and made a point to ask the doctor if it could be any of those. It wasn’t. “My son was swelling and he was using the restroom a lot,” says Carlotta Piastrelli of Fort Thomas. “We met with doctors who gave us the

wrong diagnosis and medication that didn’t help, or even made things worse. I started doing my own research on the Internet. I found the right questions to ask and kept taking him in until they finally figured out what was wrong. I decided I wasn’t taking ‘he’ll be fine’ for an answer.” Piastrelli’s son was eventually diagnosed with Nephritic Syndrome that could be treated with diet changes and medication but was very serious. “You have to ask a lot of questions and tell the doctor you know what your gut is telling you,” she says. “You are the one with your child each day and you see the changes in his health and behavior. Mom, or Dad, always knows best.” “Input from caregivers is very important when evaluating children, as their condition can change very quickly, sometimes for the better, or for worse,” says Christopher A. Cunha, M.D. with Pediatric Associates. “Examination often strengthens the diagnosis, which often can be made by history in many cases. Taking a careful history can often save the child unnecessary and sometimes painful tests, blood draws, lumbar punctures, etc.”

When you are seeing so many doctors and they are giving you all kinds of answers, sometimes you have to put things into perspective and go further. Doctors are on Your Side Medical professionals truly want to be helpful says Laura Parrott, a nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital. They don’t want their patients to be in pain or go undiagnosed. They don’t want the patient or parents to be frustrated. “We are human, but try our best. Like everyone, we also have personal lives and bad days. Sometimes we need to do more research to find the answer. We do want

our patients to be healthy. Don’t be intimidated; just speak up. Tell us everything you can think of that might help us help you.” Doctors sometimes need to be reminded that they aren’t seeing everything in the few minutes they can spend with the patient and that blood work and X-rays don’t always show everything that could be going on. Parents also need to make sure they are giving the doctor every detail they can think of. “I was not intimidated when it came to my daughter,” says Jayne Lemkuhl South of Southgate. “I spoke up and pushed for answers. And when we found out the real problem, the doctor thanked me.” “Parents should always feel that they should be able to ask for clarification of an explanation given by a provider and should be honest with a provider when difficult issues arise,” says Cunha.

Find Support My son Joey was eventually referred to the orthopedic center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). The doctor immediately knew it was more than growing pains and sent us for an MRI the next day. Within minutes of leaving the hospital, the doctor called me herself to explain that they did see something unusual in the MRI. At that point, she just thought that maybe it was an odd infection in the leg caused by another infection, like strep, going untreated. I remembered that Joey had an ear infection just a few weeks before all of this started and thought that was probably the answer. I figured he would need an antibiotic and things would be fine. A few days later a radiologist from CCHMC asked me to come in. This is the point at which I learned that you should always take another adult with you if are receiving a diagnosis. Having two people there to listen is helpful since one of you might not understand something, or in my case, go completely numb. I also suggest taking notes. Amy Lococo of Cincinnati agrees. “My son broke his collar bone. It seems like something that happens every day but this was my baby. I was very overwhelmed when the doctor explained the treatment and how he would have to be cared for at home. I had wished that my husband, who was out of town, had been there with me or that I had taken a friend.” (please turn the page)

special needs: “Many problems can be prevented if the parent takes some notes of the explanation given or asks the provider to write things down for them,” says Cunha, adding that he has gotten into the habit of writing information for parents over the years. The doctor explained to me that Joey had a rare “cancer-like” disease called Langerhan’s Cell Histiocytosis (LCH). Although LCH can be diagnosed in adults, it is usually diagnosed in children between the ages of 0 and 4. He explained that Joey being 10 and having a single cell system (only in his bone) was actually in our favor. Unfortunately though, Joey had to have a biopsy and bone graft of his hip. He was in a wheel chair for nearly three months, then a walker followed by crutches and a lot of physical therapy. He is now walking on his own and, honestly, most people would never know that he dealt with such an aggressive disease earlier this year.

Communication is Key Getting a second or third opinion is OK if you feel you need it for any reason. “When Kassidy was

sick, we actually moved doctors twice to find one that we felt was on our side and ready to help us find answers,” says Kelli Peterson of Fort Thomas. “When you are seeing so many doctors and they are giving you all kinds of answers, sometimes you have to put things into perspective and go further. Don’t settle; get second and third opinions if you need to.” Cunha agrees. “I think any reasonable provider should never try to block parents seeking second opinions, and sometimes a provider who is having many such opinions requested should be somewhat introspective and re-evaluate how they deliver information.” Parents need to understand that doctors do make mistakes. However, they should point out their mistakes in a courteous but assertive way. You and your pediatrician are a team united in the care of your children. Good communication is necessary as your family moves forward. I did call the pediatricians’ office that at one point had said my son may be faking or just had

growing pains. I explained what had happened. They were very concerned and have since taken the time to learn about LCH, which only impacts about five in 1 million people. It is important that they understand LCH since it can reactivate at any point in my son’s life and attack any part of his body — skin, bone or organs. Luckily, my son will most likely be OK. But it was a long road to the answers. I will be a better advocate for my children in the future if ever needed. Through it all, I have learned that to be an effective advocate for your children, you must ask questions, research the child’s symptoms, take notes, find support from others, be persistent, and be assertive. Paper Bag Turkey Puppet Here’s a Thanksgiving Turkey Puppet that’s fun and easy to make and will give the kids hours of fun.

What You’ll Need • paper craft bag • colorful construction paper for feathers • Yellow, brown & red construction paper for body • scissors and glue • large wiggle eyes

What You’ll Do 1. Cut 6 leaf shaped tail feathers from construction paper. Cut beak and feet from yellow, a waddle from red and round chest piece from dark brown. 2. Glue all your pieces on the paper bag as shown. Be sure his “mouth” is facing forward and glue his beak is on the fold. 3. Add 2 large wiggle eyes. Your turkey is complete! Put your hand inside and make your turkey talk! What is his name? Is he excited for Thanksgiving Day? — activity provided by the Parent-Teacher Store
