BALANCING FAMILY, LIFE & TECH

e are always on the move. Between sports, school, dance, mini outings, the park — you name it — we are always getting into something. Weeks can get a bit hectic, so once the weekend hits, it’s movie time and the kids are asking to play on their tablets. Here’s my rule: no tablets or video games during the week, only weekends in moderation. So sometimes, Will, my 8-year-old, really looks forward to this. He works hard for it. There are times when I “give in” and throw away the rule book. There was this one time I took the kids to see The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s, Sleeping Beauty. We absolutely love their productions. The kids were engaged, and we all were immersed in the music and cool effects. What an eventful evening. After meeting and greeting the characters and discussing our favorite scenes during the car ride to LaRosa’s for dinner, Will asked if he could bring his tablet into the restaurant. I gave in, a little unsure. I’m always unsure about this question. I don’t want him to be distracted when we are spending time at dinner together. But I set a time limit and gave in. Afterall, we did just have a long day, and this mama was tired, too. Will and my 3 year old, Eva, were being good. They were quiet and enjoying their pizza. After Will finished his meal, he whipped out the tablet. At that moment, I felt a strange flare. An older lady came walking by our table, looked at Will, then at me and said, “Isn’t it horrible how they are always on their devices?” Um, OK, whoa. I stare at her, no words. Literally I have nothing to say. She proceeds to say, “Oh, but it’s OK though.” Then walks away. What just happened? Was I just judged by a stranger who knows nothing about my children and my parenting? Yes, I was. I brushed it off, but did it bother me? Sure it did. She did not know that my kids were just exposed to a creative and educational theater production. She did not know that maybe we needed a tiny break. We are living in a world where judgement is all around us. It’s not fair. We should be able to create our own family-life balance. Technology is part of our world, and our children are exposed to it in many situations, much of it at school. Why should we be so stressed and paranoid about “giving in” too much or being a tired parent who doesn’t want to think for 20 minutes and would rather hand over the device? It’s a tough world! If we find the right balance and set rules and guidelines, tablet time isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Monitor and give kids some good, educational games to play here and there. Their little minds are just working and learning in a different way and that’s OK. EDITOR

AUTISM: IF YOU SENSE SOMETHING’S ‘OFF’ Recognizing that your child’s behavior may not be typical is difficult — especially if it’s your first child. BY AMANDA HAYWARD

our baby is cooing, babbling and beginning to pick up on her first word. Everything seems OK, but if this is your first child, how do you really know? “Is she where she needs to be?” is a thought that crosses many young parents’ minds. Knowing if your child is developmentally behind — or even showing signs of autism spectrum disorder — is a hard thing to fathom. But diagnosing autism when a child is young is important for their best developmental outcome. If there comes a moment when you suspect something — that gut instinct that tells you something’s not quite right — do your best not to ignore it. According to Maureen Gallagher, M.D., a pediatrician at TriHealth, attending well visits is important when it comes to your child’s development. “Children will be screened for autism at their 18 month well-child check,” Gallagher says. “If the child is not starting to develop good language skills (saying ‘Mama,’ ‘Dada,’ and a few other words by 18 months), is not showing interest in parents’ and siblings’ activities, or making good eye contact, it is very important for parents to bring this to the doctor’s attention,” she adds. At well visits, your pediatrician will always ask you basic behavioral questions and observations about your child. At some point you may be asked to fill out an autism screen. If your pediatrician’s at all concerned, you will be referred to a developmental specialist who specializes in diagnosing and treating autism.

About Autism Spectrum Disorder Children with autism have communication and social interaction deficits as well as repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. According to Paul Carbone, M.D., co-author of Autism Spectrum Disorder: What Every Parent Needs to Know (American Academy of Pediatrics; 2019), “The signs and symptoms for most children are there between 12 and 24 months; if we can get them in for evaluation, the therapies are available as young as those ages — you can easily start by 2,” he adds. Gallagher identifies what parents can look for. “Babies with autism may not develop a social smile (usually noticed by around 2 months) or begin to track or fix on objects as they move,” says Gallagher. “During toddler hood and beyond (age 1 and up), parents may start to notice language does not develop as other children’s does,” she adds. And according to Carbone, as early as 9 months — and certainly by 18 months — a typical child will look back and forth between an object of interest and a caregiver while a child on the spectrum is less likely to. As a child on the spectrum grows, behavioral issues may show up, such as unusual meltdowns or becoming easily disturbed by noises. A child may become fixated on unusual objects or develop strange movements. It is difficult in this stage of adjustment, but you are not alone on your journey. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 59 children in the U.S. have autism. “There will be struggles that the child faces compared to peers without autism, but the

child can live a full life,” assures Gallagher. “Early intervention through therapies can lead to positive outcomes,” she adds. Occupational, speech and behavioral therapy are some treatments that can lead to positive outcomes for your child. It’s critical to find a specialist you are comfortable with, but you should also know that there will be no quick fixes. anet Bruno knew that her kids really didn’t recognize how fortunate they were to have a good dinner every night and pretty much everything they need in their closets. So, with the holiday season approaching, she decided to make an effort to sort of “expose” her kids to the different ways of life “out there.” She decided that the family would volunteer together. There are plenty of ways for families to reach out and help in the surrounding communities. Here are some considerations while you hone in on what to do: Project Focus As a family, brainstorm together to decide what type of volunteer activity you are interested in doing. Ask your kids who they would like to help. Is there a particular cause they know about or are passionate about? What interests, skills, and talents do your family members have? Indoors or outdoors? 20 November 2019

Organization’s Mission Do your research and find out the group’s history and how it got started, the goals and mission, who its leaders are and how it is funded. Check their website and search online for press coverage. Visiting sites such as charitywatch.org and charitynavigator.org can help you, too. Location Search for projects that are close to home. Check your local paper, call charitable organizations, or search online to find the perfect places for kids to volunteer in your area. Time Commitment Decide how much time you have to volunteer. You can do it as often as you can or sign up for once a week, once a month or once a year.
