merry christmas from the heart
or years, my family has done a Christmas exchange to end all Christmas exchanges. Since I’m one of five children — and since we’re all grown up with kids of our own — we try to include everyone in the exchange. Each year all of our names are put into two hats: one is the “Gives” hat and the other is the “Receives” hat. So, if you’re the one whose year it is to come up with the exchange list, you might pull a piece of paper from the “Gives” hat and jot down, “Elly gives to ...” and then pull another piece from the “Receives” hat and finish the sentence with “Pat!” So Elly would give to Pat. Each year, different people are in charge of doing the list and sending it out (and I think at least one of my siblings has cheated on the list making!), but each year as we have grown and our families have changed, we have modified based upon what’s happening in our lives. For instance, four of my nieces and nephews are in college now, strapped for extra cash and working odd shifts to help pay for room and board. Why should they be expected to buy a present for someone in the family when they don’t have enough for themselves? Well, it’s my year to do the master exchange list so I’m modifying ... not only based on my nieces and nephews ... but based on the economy. We are all of us scattered around the country. Sending presents is an expense in itself. So I’ve come up with an idea that I don’t think anyone can argue with ... well, maybe the little kids can ... they are just wee ones after all, and Santa Claus comes but once a year. I’ll have to think on that. This year, with sensitivity to all that has happened this year in my family: Dad’s heart bypass surgery, kids in college, bad economy, I’m going to propose a “Gifts from the Heart” list. Yes, I will still put everyone’s name in a “Gives” hat and everyone’s name in a “Receives” hat. But this year, no one is allowed to BUY a gift. This year, everyone is going to be asked to give away something of their own. Something that they love and something that they’d like to keep in the family. When, for instance, Elly finds out that she is to give to Pat (this is a 23-year-old giving to an 81-year-old), well, my soon-to-be-a-poet niece can write an original poem if she chooses, or she can turn to her wonderful collection of literature and find a volume that she thinks Pat would like. When my 8-year-old little boy finds out that he gives to his 3-year-old cousin, Evan, this year, he will be asked to go into his toy collection to find something that Evan would love to have. And so on and so forth. Hmm ... what to do when Thomas doesn’t want to part with anything? I’ll have to modify as we go ... What to do when all that the college kids want/need is cash? Hmm ... modify as we go ... If you say, well, how can you cover “Toys of the Year” in your pages and then tell readers that you’re not buying anything this year? I can say, we all have to dream. And many of us will indeed buy. But in the middle of all that is happening in my family, and in the world today, I like to think that making special, sensitive gift-from-the-heart choices is somehow more meaningful than just buying to buy. Last year I did a lot of buying to buy just to get everything out on time. I didn’t like the way that felt. I want Christmas to have the meaning in my heart it deserves. And since it’s my year to make the master list, that’s what I’m aiming for! Email me your thoughts and suggestions. I'd love to hear from you! susan@daycommail.com

Peaceful Parenting: A Mindfulness-Based Approach December 2, 2010 that these automatic reactions often triggered a power struggle.
Years ago, I caught myself as I disciplined my 3-year-old son. “Yikes!” I thought, “That tone sounds so mean - just like my mother!” While I remember the harsh tone of my voice, I have long forgotten his transgression. Most likely, he was doing normal kid stuff and I was in a bad mood, stressed out and loosing my patience. Over time I realized my “default mode” in parenting came from the way I was disciplined as a child. I started to notice times when my son pushed my buttons I would do and say things in the heat of the moment that I would later regret. I also noticed

Over the years I’ve found that mindful awareness practices help parents bring a more peaceful approach to their parenting. Scientific research is showing that these practices help us observe ourselves, inhibit our automatic reactions and make better decisions about how best to respond to our children. Mindful parenting helps us bring warmheartedness to the ways we provide guidance to our children, resulting in more peaceful happy families.

fter three years at their Liberty Township location, Little Gym owners Kevin and Page Helmick are opening a second location in Mason in January 2011. Native Cincinnatians dedicated to exposing kids to non-competitive athletics, the Helmicks currently see over 500 children in their gym each week. “As parents and consumers ourselves, we know how discriminating we all are about how and where to spend our money on our children,” says Page Helmick. “We understand that each parent has choices in their child’s activities and we are confident that The Little Gym has value beyond the weekly classes. It sets a foundation for confidence and success for each child’s future, and Kevin and I see that firsthand.” The new location will open in January 2011 at 8201 Arbor Square in Mason. the freestore foodbank ... virtually
id you know the Freestore Foodbank pays approximately $80 for every canned food drive to cover the costs of transporting barrels of food? Now, that money can be saved with online food drives. “It’s a great way to do a smaller food drive and let all the money go toward purchasing food,” says James Norris, Interactive Manager. The new Virtual Food Drive program lets you establish a drive, complete with your own web page that announces goals, provides updates and even lets you send messages to team members. To help kick off the new program, Cincinati Family and NKY Family invites you to join our own virtual food! Just visit freestorefoodbank.org, and make a donation in the amount of your choosing — a single dollar can buy four meals! Families, parent groups and schools are welcome to set up individual teams under our drive and compete against each other for bragging rights. If you can’t make a donation, join the Feed America’s awarness campaign, “Hunger Free Families” — read personal stories at feedamerica.org and pledge to make 10 friends aware of hunger in America. Breast Feeding Class At Suburban Pediatrics, we understand that with the expected arrival of your new baby many important decisions will need to be made. One of these will be whether breast milk or infant formula will be your baby’s primary source of nutrition. Due to the many benefits to your baby’s immune system, the American Academy of Pediatrics and Suburban Pediatrics recommend that breast milk be your baby’s primary source of nutrition from birth to age 12 months. Normally, the breastfeeding experience is a positive one and goes smoothly with few or no problems. However, in a small percentage of cases, it does not. PhySICIANS Allan H. Robinson M.D. Richard B. the weather
C
older weather is on its way, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatricians (aap.org) to help you dress your child for the outdoors: • Wear a hood, hat, scarf or face mask as most heat loss is at the head. • Keep feet dry with waterproof boots over shoes. • Wear a thermal knit layer underneath daytime clothes, then top that with warm outwear. • Use coats with hoods, thick fabric, linings of flannel or fake fur, overlapping fabric to keep out the wind, and long lengths to cover bottoms.
cold or flu? ... sore throat or strep?
W
• Aim for rib-knit cuffs and hems rather than drawstrings, as those can catch on sleds, or branches.
ondering if you have a simple cold on your hands, or something more serious, like the flu or strep throat? Here are some signs to look for. According to Gurpreet Thind, M.D., with Group Health Associates in Finneytown:
Viral sore throats:
Strep throat:
• Tend to be associated with upper respiratory symptoms like a runny nose, nasal congestion and cough, and may be associated with a fever
• May be accompanied by a fever, headache, abdominal pain or vomiting, and there is usually an absence of upper respiratory symptoms
• An exam will show redness in the throat or white patches (exudate), but more commonly, a pediatrician will see ulcers
• An exam will show redness, swollen tonsils, red spots on the palate called palatal petechiae, and enlarged, tender lymph nodes in the neck
“Most sore throats are due to viruses and are present for the first few days of illness,” says Thind. “If the sore throat is due to strep, then we treat the child with 10 days of antibiotic (or an injection of penicillin if the child is vomiting too much to tolerate an oral antibiotic course) to reduce the chance of developing rheumatic fever.” And according to Morissa Ladinsky, M.D., with Group Health Associates in Mason, a cold presents with slight aches, mild tiredness, a rare or low-grade fever, and usually sneezing. The flu will result in fever, severe aches and chills, moderate-tosevere fatigue, and about 80 percent of sufferers will have a headache. “While it’s easy to mistake flu symptoms for a cold or ‘just being under the weather’ initially, it’s important to know the difference,” says Ladinsky. “Prescription antiviral medicine — if started early in a bout of flu — may shorten the length and severity of illness. Antibiotics will not cure either illness but may be prescribed if ear infections or pneumonia are complicating the viral illness.”

Harry Potter in Orlando: Brilliant! MAKING PLANS
Universal’s newest attraction does not disappoint
universalorlando.com/Home/home.aspx
K
ids have a way of jolting sleepy parents awake in the wee hours of the morning, and this day was no different. Jumping up and down, excitedly sharing goofy antics and laughs at 6:45 a.m., my family waited to board the first water taxi of the morning from Portofino Bay Hotel. Dad and I smiled through our early morning haze, but as we neared the end of the gentle 10-minute boat ride to the Universal Orlando dock, we caught the kids’ joy: Look! There’s the entrance! Hurry, hurry! We’re here! Finally! The Wizarding World of Harry Potter! Since we were staying at one of Universal’s three on-site resorts, we were privvy to a one-hour-prior-to-opening admission, but large crowds were already forming at the gate. Other resort guests hustled before us to reach Hogsmeade in the back of the park — some unabashedly running! We thought our earlier admission would propel us to the head of the class — we fantasized being the first to see steam from the Hogwarts Express billowing into the air and hearing the screeching whistle; we thought we’d get right into Zonko’s joke shop, Honeydukes candy shop, the Owlery and Owl Post, Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods and more — but by the time we reached Hogsmeade there was already an impressive line forming for Ollivanders wand shop! And that’s the thing to know going in: Harry Potter is extremely popular and there will be crowds galore at every spot. To assure that you can experience the magic of Ollivanders wand shop without waiting in line all day — seriously — one person in your party needs to get into the Ollivanders line immediately to secure your family’s spot. What’s the big deal? Ollivanders is a shop like no other, promising a fully immersive and magical wand-buying experience resulting in your very own wand designed just for you. It’s a must! Ooh and aah all you like (and you will) as you wind through Hogsmeade headed to Hogwarts (sip on a Butterbeer as you go — this frothy non-alcoholic concoction conjures butterscotch and shortbread with a creamy head) but get thee next to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, the main ride located inside Hogwarts.
The Rides
Not an expense was spared in the artistic replication of Hogwarts or in all of Hogsmeade, for that matter. Just as author J.K. Rowling imagined in the Harry Potter series of books, the films’ production designer and art director joined forces with artisans from Universal Creative to meticulously create The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Heading into Hogwarts for The Forbidden Journey, if you have bags or cameras, you’ll be directed to a locker area where you’ll scan a fingerprint to be assigned a free locker — ingenious technology in itself — then, inside Hogwarts, you’ll wind through numerous darkened passageways and corridors with enchanted portraits. Being in Hogwarts is delightful and the line moves along as your eyes feast on details within. Toward the end of the line, in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, Harry, Ron and Hermione themselves will enchant you before you’re buckled into a moving bench for a
12 December 2010
CF 06-13 (FYI).indd 12
fantastic ride into Harry’s exciting life. State-of-the-art technology and filmmaking put you into the scene; my favorite part was flying behind Harry himself, soaring over the water and feeling like I was actually there. There are some spooky aspects to the ride, of course; danger, spirits and spells abound, so be warned, but the technology will blow you away. Outside Hogwarts, a kiosk offers wands — this is a good option for Harry fans who can’t bear Ollivanders’ line, although you can also purchase wands at Dervish and Banges shop (the line takes approximately 20 minutes). Or simply move onto The Flight of the Hippogriff (based on the magical creature with the head of an eagle), a gentle roller coaster that’s over all too briefly, but one your littlest ones will appreciate. The other ride in Hogsmeade is the devilish Dragon Challenge — two coasters that run at the same time on separate tracks in a whirlwind of spirals and speed. While the rides are fun, what makes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter so awesome is the design and attention to detail in Hogsmeade’s art direction. And after all the excitement of the rides, we were famished.
Shops and Food
I dreaded the thought of standing with a tray of food and jockeying for a table. That’s why parents can really appreciate the Three Broomsticks restaurant. The eatery offers a great feast and does it right. A short line whisks your party forward to order from delicious shepherd’s pie, fish ‘n chips, roasted chicken and potatoes, or traditional items and kiddie fare. Next, you move to another brief line to pick up your food, and happily, once you’ve grabbed your condiments, forks and such, a hostess takes you right to your table. The rustic large tavern offers plenty of seating and crowd control/eating time/table count match up perfectly. We relished in a fresly baked hot apple pie for dessert. Our bellies full, we were happy to wander around Hogsmeade now without rushing. We took pictures with the Hogwart's Express conductor, dipped into Dervish and Banges, and spent the rest of the afternoon meandering through the various shops. We considered purchasing Extendable Ears, Fizzing Whizzbees, and Pygmy Puffs, but in the end, came away with a Gryffindor blanket, a Harry Potter scarf and two wands (which had chosen two of my very favorite Muggles for themselves). A trip to Orlando to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a big ticket item for sure — but you’ll be able to offer all the Universal offers at its parks in addition to Harry — and there are plenty of options for what suits your family. Watch for airline deals or plan a visit during spring break or summer vacation when you can do the drive. The bottom line: you’ll be thrilled if you go. And, like Hermione Granger, you’ll declare Harry Potter ... Brilliant! J Susan Swindell Day is a mom of four adventurous kids and editor in chief of this publication.

Give the Gift of Time Classroom-tested and teacher-approved, the Time Timer has been designed to help your child understand, “how much longer?” Ideal for the home, no other learning aid reinforces the concept of elapsed time as well as the Time Timer. We were unhappy with our existing child care arrangements and moved our daughter to KGS about two years ago. Immediately, we noticed how busy she was each day and how interactive the caregivers were with the children. We really like that fact that the caregivers aren’t just there to “supervise,” but actually play with the children. Because of our positive experience at KGS with our first daughter, we didn’t have to think twice about sending our second daughter here. -Lisa & Derek Wilhelmus

A Peaceful Christmas BY KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN
rowing up, I was blessed to have lots of family and the added benefit of those family members living close by. Somehow the dilemma of where to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day was always worked out by my parents and grandparents. Their solution was to celebrate with my dad’s family on Christmas Eve one year and on Christmas Day the next, alternating with my mom’s family. As time went by, we added more family members through marriage and birth, which meant more personalities and distances to manage. When I got married, my husband and I attempted to make everyone happy and see as many people as we could over the holidays. Invariably, by the time the new year rolled around, we were totally frazzled from celebrating Christmas no less than six times with many sets of relatives in a 10-day period. Once we added a few of our own kids to the mix, Christmas Day got even crazier. Rather than feel like the rope in a game of human Tug-of-War, I had to come up with some quick fixes. I hope some of my suggestions will help you and your family fully enjoy Christmas this year, as well.
relatively close, consider having a pow-wow in the summer to hammer out the details of time, place, gift and meal options. One year your cousin may need to leave early to spend the rest of the day with her husband’s family. Another year it may just work out best to hold the event on Christmas Eve.
5.
DO DROP IN. Elaine St. James, author of Simplify Your Christmas: 100 Ways to Reduce the Stress and Recapture the Joy of the Holidays (Andrews McMeel Publishing), only visits her sister and her family to raise a toast but not to eat. She takes no food for the meal, no gifts, and says to her family, “We’re bringing ourselves and our best wishes for the season.”
6.
HELP YOUR EXTENDED FAMILY REALIZE THAT CHRISTMAS CAN BE EVEN NICER WHEN SPENT ON A DAY OTHER THAN DECEMBER 25TH. We get together with my grandparents a couple of weeks before or after Christmas Day, and the mood is much more relaxed. We get to take our time opening gifts while enjoying each other’s company, and we treasure that time together and look forward to it every year.
1.
7.
2.
8.
COMBINE FAMILY EVENTS. Instead of running to your parents’ house and THEN to see each of your siblings separately, consider having just one shin-dig at one location when most everyone can attend. A sit-down dinner isn’t necessary. In fact, make it a potluck. My brother- and sister-in-law throw a party like this at their house every year the Friday evening before Christmas, and they even have crafts for the kids (like building a gingerbread house or painting ornaments).
CONSIDER AN OPEN HOUSE. Choose a location (like Grandma’s house), a date and a convenient time frame (like 4 - 8 p.m.) when family members can come and go as they please without the pressure of being on time for a meal. Serve finger foods and other easy fare to make it easy on the hostess. If you don’t know when you might catch your family members, you could leave their gifts there for them — or just stay for the whole thing!
3.
ATTEND THE FAR-AWAY CELEBRATIONS EVERY OTHER YEAR. It’s just a fact of life that people marry someone from another state or move out of town due to a job change or other circumstance. This can leave many families feeling pulled in too many directions when the holidays roll around. It can be difficult to decide how to come together.
4.
NEGOTIATE ANNUALLY. All families are different, and it can be practically impossible to please every member every year. If you all live
JUST STAY HOME. After having our third child, we made the tough choice to celebrate Christmas Day at our home every year. Our decision was not popular, and we’ve had to defend it every year, but it is the most relaxing (ah, sweatpants all day long!) and fun (playing with our kids and their new toys) day of our entire year. WHEN TENSIONS ARISE, THINK OF OTHERS WITH LESS. Consider serving food at a homeless shelter sometime around the holiday or being a bell-ringer for The Salvation Army for a couple of hours. These are great opportunities to take your kids along and teach them the true meaning of the holidays. Elaine St. James has another great idea: Make paper bag lunches with sandwiches, cookies, fruits and juice drinks and pass it out to the homeless in your area. To ensure no feelings are hurt, make sure your family knows they are always welcome to spend Christmas Day at your home (with some notice, of course!). With a little understanding and love, everyone involved can have a peaceful holiday season.
