Keep the Songbird Singing he late, great American poet Emily Dickinson wrote of hope in 1861:

“HOPE” IS THE THINGS WITH FEATHERS “Hope” is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops - at all And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard And sore must be the storm That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm I’ve heard it in the chillest land And on the strangest Sea Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.

Dickinson wrote of hope as a free spirit, and yet she also depicts life’s storms raging against it. It happens. When your child is little, that hopeful internal bird sings a wonderful song in his soul. Children are born with hope, but the storms of life DO rage against it. As they grow, kids weather parental disappointment and anger, rigid schedules, rejection, changing friends, losses of pets or worse, school issues, divorce, remarriage, puberty, the ups and downs of it all. Through all of this, that little internal songbird gets shaken. If things get too rough, that little songbird stops singing. Raising my four kids, I’ve learned to work with powerful keys over the years that have given me good results and kept my kids wholesome and relatively positive. The keys are: ACCEPTANCE: Unconditional love. Looking past your child’s faults and loving him for who he is. Saying, “I love you” with no “but.” APPROVAL: Letting your kids know that you approve of them more than you disapprove. ENCOURAGEMENT: Saying,“I am so proud of you because ______. Telling them,“Good job.” Noticing the good. RESPECT: Not belittling your kids. Listening. Being there. SUPPORT: Having your child’s back. Speaking up for him when he can’t. Connecting him to friends. HIGHER POWER: My kids understand that they were created by something outside of themselves and that it’s divine. We name it God. They know they can have a personal relationship with Him. That little bird of hope that perches in the soul of your little one needs to be fed and nourished all the way to adulthood. What an awesome and important task!

SCREENS & TOTS: The AAP changes its guidelines for the preschool set ... but is it wise? By Sherry Hang

or years, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advised parents of children ages 2 and younger to avoid exposure to screens, be it TV, computers or mobile devices. The reasoning was that young minds are still developing and aren’t ready to process an understanding of a 2D world versus a very real 3D world. That hasn’t changed in spite of the AAP’s recently announced new guidelines, which allow for some screen time with parameters. Authors of the paper Media and Young Minds still advocate “hands-on exploration and social interaction with trusted caregivers to develop cognitive, language, motor and social-emotional skills.” John Hutton, M.D., a pediatrician and researcher at the Reading and Literacy Discovery Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, says, “The landscape has changed for how kids are growing up, and there’s a lot of confusion on what’s good for them.” Hutton says kids younger than age 2 are dependent on back-andforth interaction while pointing out the problem with screen-based media is that it’s one-way and doesn’t allow for response and feedback. At the same time, pediatricians are aware of the pervasiveness of digital media. “Ideally,” says Hutton, “kids younger than 2 interact with a loving parent all day, every day.” Pediatricians and the AAP admit that keeping devices and TV away from babies and toddlers is not an easy task for parents in busy moments. But quick media dips are not going to hinder your

child’s development as long as you set a few guidelines to keep devices from always being the go-to solution. In some ways, Hutton says, the AAP’s guidelines have tightened. Kids younger than 18 months should be restricted just to videochats when it comes to screen time. The 18 - 24 months range is what he calls “the new gray area.” Interaction with adults is crucial to child development at this age. So if you’re going to let your toddler watch TV, make sure you first choose what the AAP calls high-quality programming. Sesame Street is a good example touted by the AAP. Second — and this is what makes up the core of the guidelines — is to make sure you watch with your child, so it becomes an engaging experience. Kids need adults to guide them, and that happens through conversations about what is seen on the screen. “Co-viewing can blunt the effects of TV,” says Hutton, adding it gets kids away from a passive, one-way style of viewing to a more healthy approach that involves dialogue with a trusted adult. Hutton also advises parents to be mindful of their own digital media use as kids look to them for role modeling. It’s also a good idea to not focus on restrictions when it comes to screen watching, but instead encourage kids on things they can do, like go outside, read books, play with real toys and use their imagination for games. “Make room for formative, rich, multi-sensory experiences with your kids,” he says. Those experiences are connections all parents can feel good about.

Every year, my mother and I get together for a day to bake and make candy. While I’ve been sworn to uphold the family secret that is her sugar cookie recipe, there are a few other faves worth sharing — and your kiddos can help with these!

TRADITIONS “I love to sew, so I make everyone PJ pants each year (including Dad and the baby) and hand them out on Christmas Eve. They always reflect some fun aspect of the person. Everyone shows up on Christmas morning in their new PJs, and we take a family photo in front of the tree.” – Bonnie Jean Feldkamp “Every holiday I take my children to a Giving/ Angel Tree where they look for a tag with a child their same age. They shop with me for the items on the child’s wish list, then I let each child pick one item that they think the child would want as an extra gift. They help me wrap and deliver the gifts back to the tree.”

RITZY PB’S A perfect combo of sweet and salty, we’ve been making these for years! Just sandwich peanut butter between two Ritz crackers and then dunk the whole thing in melted chocolate (we prefer white chocolate). Set up a buffet of colored sprinkles and let your little chefs have at it. (Tip: You won’t regret freezing a few!)

POTATO-LESS CANDY Shortcut: combine two sticks of softened butter, two pounds powdered sugar, one tbs. plus one tsp. vanilla and enough evaporated milk for a cookie-dough consistency. Chill for 30 minutes, then roll to quarter-inch thickness between wax paper. Remove top sheet of paper, spread with peanut butter, roll up and slice.

SHORTBREAD “Christmas socks! Everybody gets new Christmas socks when we decorate the tree!”

I like mine rolled in a mix of cinnamon and sugar, just out of the oven, while my mother loves to dip one end in melted chocolate and let the kids decorate with sprinkles. Use two cups softened butter, one cup white sugar, two tbs. vanilla and four cups of all-purpose flour. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy, add vanilla, then the flour a little at a time until mixed. Shape in logs and chill for at least 30 minutes. Slice and bake 8 - 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

Holiday Shopping It’s easy to stress over finding the perfect gift for loved ones, but here are a few gift tips that will have you being present, instead of worrying about what you need to buy: • Spread out your shopping over the weeks prior to Christmas to ease the stress. Plan ahead for next year: If you see something unique (or at a great price) during summer, go ahead and buy it, then store it. • Keep a small stockpile of “just in case” presents (wine, candles, chocolates, nice soaps and lotions, gift cards, etc.). There is nothing worse realizing you forgot to get your child’s teacher a gift ... and tomorrow is the last day before holiday break! The merry-maker-in-chief may not have a whole lot of fun this month unless she builds in self-care time: Think “pedicure,” “mani,” “a ‘lil sumpin’ for me,” and coffee ... lots of coffee!

BALANCING ACT WITH TODDLERS? How are you supposed to do all this? Try these handy expert tips: • Barter with a friend to exchange sitting so you can shop. • Keep little ones active with plenty of playtime.

If you buy a lot of presents, you’ll have a lot of wrapping to do. You don’t have to make an all-day affair of wrapping that mountain of presents come mid-December, though! Plan ahead with these hacks: • Wrap it the day you buy it. Taking three minutes to wrap one gift once the kiddos are asleep is far less stressful than making a day of wrapping 20 presents. Just make sure to use gift tags so you know who the present is for! • Rachael Van Hulle, mother of three, says, “We ‘build’ all the toys before Christmas morning so we’re not trying to get all the toys out of boxes and batteries installed the morning of.” While the box says ‘some assembly required,’ and the instructions make it look so easy to put together, we all know it’s trickier than that. You have to find the right screwdriver and batteries, then follow 16 steps in the right order. Wouldn’t you rather watch your kids play with their toys, instead of getting frustrated while assembling them? • I have attempted many cutesy crafts, only to end up with Pinterest fails, but grandparents love kiddie crafts. Keep it simple, or consider wrapping loved ones’ gifts with butcher paper, and let your kids decorate them!

Festive Fun Most local attractions have wonderful themed events that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Then there are cherished home traditions like baking and decorating cookies. Check out these time-budgeting tips to make the most of your calendar days: • Make a list of activities you would like to enjoy with your family, then rank them from “must-do” to “if we have time.” Put the must-do activities on your calendar first, and fill in the rest of the weekend days with tentative activities you would like to do if you have time. Local mom Katie Taylor uses this time-budgeting method and says, “When time runs out, it’s the things I felt were least important left on the list and it allows me to feel good about where I put my time.” • Know that it’s OK to say, “No.” It’s hard to turn down an invitation, especially if you feel like it hurts someone’s feelings.

• Remember to balance your little one’s sweet intake with heathier food options. • Engage a teen “mother’s helper” for afternoons when you need extra hands.

However, there are only four full weekends in December. If you preserve weekends for something special for your family, spend quality time with extended family during weekday evenings. Beech Acres Parent Coach Sharon James suggests, “Let people know what your schedule is like: ‘I have two weekends in December that I am able to keep open. The other weekends I cannot make plans. Which of those two weekends will work for you?’ Be very clear what the boundaries are.”

What’s Cookin’? Hosting a holiday feast is a rewarding experience. Everyone is gathered around the table with delicious dishes. Stories are told, laughs are had … but somewhere the cook is happy to be sitting down for a minute, exhausted from marathon cooking all day. • Be prepared. A few days before your get-together, check your pantry to make sure you have necessary ingredients; cut vegetables and store them in airtight containers. You can also cook dishes that freeze and heat up well in advance. • If you are feeling overwhelmed, ask for help. Many guests will gladly prepare a side dish or dessert. It’s always fun to see what yummy dishes are brought for a potluck dinner. • Hang copies of recipes on your cabinets with painter’s tape. Your recipe pages will stay clean, and you will easily be able to check measurements and cooking instructions. • Too many cooks in the kitchen can be less than jolly. If someone offers to help, delegate a task out of the kitchen. Grandmas can wrangle up the grandkids to color, or even help set the table. MOM REPORT: PNC Festival of Lights By Amanda Ciani

cherish memories of visiting the Festival of Lights with my family from when I was a little girl. Now, I look forward to taking my own kids every single year! There is nothing better in the world than seeing your child’s eyes light up with pure, unfiltered excitement. The PNC Festival of Lights at Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is sure to give your kids that look of being awe-struck (basking in the glow of 2.5 million lights has that effect on you)! Our very favorite light attraction during last year’s visit was the cinema-centric Swan Lake Wild Lights Show. We loved guessing what movie each song was from before a visual clue was given on the LED tree (a raptor claw for Jurassic Park, Darth Vader for Star Wars, etc.) It’s like a movie-themed version of “Name That Tune” … with lights! This year promises a whole new show. Also new this year, Santa will be available for visits starting at 4 p.m., giving you an extra hour to meet the jolly old elf before the festivities begin at 5 p.m. One of my favorite memories from our visit last year was my 2-year-old’s encounter with Mrs. Claus. She engaged him in a fun hot-chocolate conversation, and spent a few minutes with him chatting and singing together. It was such a kind moment that makes me believe she might just be the real Mrs. Claus! In addition to all the lights, attractions, characters and yummy food, you can also enjoy seeing the zoo animals at night. The elephants happily play with barrels filled with hay and popcorn, while the giraffes are indoors enjoying a late night snack. Santa’s reindeer keep a watchful eye on all the boys and girls to make sure they are being nice. You may also be lucky enough to stumble upon a zookeeper with an owl or snake! It’s a great opportunity to get a closer view of some cool critters. We had a great time during our visit to Festival of Lights last year and can’t wait to go again this year. When you go, avoid the crowds by visiting on a week day or earlier in the evening. The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden’s located at 3400 Vine St. PNC Festival of Lights is open 5 - 9 p.m. Sun - Thu and 5 - 10 p.m. Fri - Sat through Jan. 1.
