the little things By Amanda Hayward
"You're Stressing Me Out, Mommy!"
T
here it was — the five words I dread the most. I didn’t mean to stress him out, I was helping him, trying to give him some direction. It was a rainy, cold day and all of our Halloween plans were cancelled. We put in a lot of work to get ready for all of the fun, so I thought, surely there is something indoors we can do tonight. So I took all three kiddos to a drive-through trunk-or-treat event. I don’t remember having anything like this when I was a kid, but it’s one of the most convenient activities to do with a car full of kids — everyone stays put in a warm, cozy car as we drive by, stick our head out the window and get some candy from cool, decorated trunks. Easy peasy - what could go wrong, right? Wrong. We pulled up to a backed up, long line of cars — everyone had the same idea as I did. Brilliant, Amanda, brilliant, I thought, but who cares if the kids are happy? We have nowhere to go — we can just be patient and enjoy each others company. The kids were dressed up in their costumes with their candy bags ready. As soon as my oldest, Will, saw the line, his mood changed. “Mommy, can we turn around? Ugh, this line is so long, this will take forever!” I looked behind me and there was no going back. Then I thought, Wait, I drove these kids over here to have some fun and he’s upset about it? Why did I even do this if he is just going to complain? “Will, it’s fine. Everyone has to wait. It will be fun once it’s our turn to drive through.” This helped a little, but I couldn't help but see the “bored” look on my 10-year-old’s face, which really brought my mood down. Why doesn’t he appreciate this? I thought. Slowly, everything went into a downward spiral. It was finally our turn and the kids were pushing through to get their bags out the window. It was five more minutes of aggravation and fighting. I tried to direct them in my impatient tone, and then Will said it. “You’re stressing me out, Mommy!” I was quiet. What? What did I do to stress him out? Why is my 10 year old stressed? Is it me? Did I do too much? Maybe we could have stayed home and just watched a Halloween movie. I took my tone down and everyone grew happy as the vendors greeted us with smiles; candy bags filled. The kids were happy as I was in deep thought wondering if I stressed out my kids. Maybe I should keep things more simple. At the end of it all, the kids were fine and happy. Kids these days do feel the stress with all of the things going on — holiday bustle, events, things, things, Santa and more things. We do need to enjoy the season, but also take the time to listen to your kids and remember that less is more; and most of all, just be with your kids! Oh, the joys of parenthood, right?

It’s the holidays — time to throw the rule book out the window, right? Not if you want to have a happy, restful holiday. Here’s why.
I
Why Bending Bedtime Rules Too Much Can Backfire
t’s all fun and games until school starts back up after holiday break and you realize that giving a little too much freedom to your kids — including unlimited cookies and late night movies — wasn’t the best idea after all. It’s totally acceptable to give a little and relax a bit, but too much can do more harm than good. Moderation is everything right now. According to Sanjiv Patel, M.D., medical director of Mercy Health - Fairfield and Liberty Falls Sleep Centers, bending the rules a little bit is totally OK. However, some parents think we get a break so that means we are giving our kids a break, too, when really we are not. Drastically changing our routine — diet, sleep and exercise — can turn into a downward spiral for everyone. “Obviously it’s the loss of that schedule,” he says. “We graze [eat] more during the holidays and it changes our structure and how our normal rhythm is; it’s cold and the kids aren’t having recess and having physical education. That all changes.” Already kids are off their schedule so any other major changes, such as lack of sleep, can cause them to feel more fatigued and moody. According to Patel, a lot of kids have sleep issues because of parental guidelines (not setting a schedule, keeping them up too late, sugar before bed, etc.)
“We don’t put down good habits for them,” he explains.“ Part of what you have to do is be a good example. How do we shut down before bed, how do we eat, how do we shut down our electronics — that’s what your kids see; that’s what they think is normal.” Being a good example will also help you to sleep better, too. Make time to wind down at the end of a busy day and spend time together. In addition, keeping some of your routine during the holidays can help. Take time to play, eat a balanced diet, and include balanced, healthy meals as often as possible. “I’ll let the kids stay up an extra hour or hour and a half, but I’m not letting them stay up for four hours extra,” he says. Again, moderation is key. According to Patel, just that one day of sleep deprivation can take days for us (including our kids) to recover from. And that is no way to spend a holiday break. “We can bend the rules during the holidays, but you don’t break the rules,” he continues. “Don’t change the pattern by too much.” Kids live by schedules. Instead of letting them snooze until whenever, pick some days where you all get up early together, get some breakfast and go on a winter walk, for example. This will help keep a little structure. A large portion of kids in the U.S. are sleep deprived, and there’s a lot from a
cincinnatifamilymagazine.com
physical standpoint and from a psychological and mental standpoint, says Patel. “Data shows with sleep deprivation, kids have difficulty focusing and concentrating; from a physical standpoint, one of the big issues we see is obesity because when you sleep, for kids, there’s certain hormones that are released, especially growth hormones that cause them to grow.” When kids aren’t getting enough sleep, that growth hormone isn’t being released, causing them to not reach their target height potential, but their weight continues to increase.
A Well-Balanced Holiday • Plan Ahead - Slowly get kids back on school schedule in advance, about two to four days before school restarts. • Go For Small Wins - Set small goals. Once that small change works, stretch it a little further. • Write It Down - It’s easier to see patterns if we write them down. If you struggle with sleep, keep a journal for clarity. • Enjoy Time with Your Kids Enough said! Amanda Hayward is editor of this publication and a mom of three.

The ‘Right’ Age
Should your kids watch “Squid Game?” Peer pressure, busy lives — these are some of the factors that can impact clear decision-making when it comes to your kids, TV, social media and tech.
W
hen is it OK for kids to have an Instagram account? What age can they watch the popular Netflix series, “Squid Game?” Have a TV in their room? Is there really a “right age” and what effect does it have on our kids? The right age depends on the kid and the family, and yes, it does have an impact on our kids’ development and mental health. Setting your own guidelines and family rules really is up to you, however, also knowing the appropriate age for your kid when it comes to social media and technology is essential to their well-being. “This readiness is based on many aspects of physical and emotional maturity. What’s the right age for a child to access technology? It all depends,” says Chris Tuell Ed.D., clinical director of addiction services and assistant professor of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. “Technology and the internet can provide a great learning experience for young children, however, this learning needs to be accompanied by an ongoing interaction with the parent,” he says. If you’re unsure whether to allow your kid to have his first phone or watch a popular TV series that everyone is ranting about, stop and think about this first: How did you decide which sport to sign your kids up for? When to cut off sugar? Put them to bed? There is a careful thought process to these decisions. Naturally, you look at their age, behavior and more. This decision-making process goes hand-in-hand with technology and social media, says Tuell. What matters is how we set the stage for our kids when allowing them to watch their favorite TV shows or have their first Instagram account. “Technology and media are present in all aspects of our lives,” he continues. “When it comes to our kids, we may want to consider how our focus on technology should be more on how we live with technology, rather than opposing it.” Following Guidelines Age guidelines exist, but are we following them? Some parents tend to let go of the “rules” because of pure exhaustion and at times, find ways to catch a break which may mean giving up on monitoring what their kids are viewing. Or we give in to everyday 10 december 2021
peer pressure. The health impact of exposing kids to violence at a young age may make some parents think twice before being too lenient and letting their kids cozy up next to them during their favorite adult TV show. “It is essential to follow guidelines and age limitations for kids, because when it comes to technology and TV shows/ movies, the material may not be age-appropriate, especially for young and impressionable minds,” says Tuell. “We have to remind ourselves as parents, that exposure to certain levels of violence and sexual themes, can have a negative and lasting impact on the child’s emotional development.” Short-term effects include poor school performance; sleep disturbances; and aggressive behaviors toward others, he continues. Long term effects of kids and teens being exposed to graphic violent images include depression, anxiety and trauma. Amanda Hayward is editor of this publication and a mom of three.
TECH GUIDELINES Per The American Psychological Association:
0 - 2 YEARS:
NEVER/NOWHERE
3 - 5 YEARS:
ONE HOUR A DAY
5 - 12 YEARS: SUPERVISED USE 13 - 18 YEARS: RESPONSIBLE USE Per The American Academy of Pediatrics:
• Avoid using screen media for anything other than video chatting for kids younger than 18 months. • Find high-quality programming for toddlers 18 to 24 months and watch or play together. • Limit screen to one hour per day of high-quality programs for ages 2 to 5 years. • Create a family media plan with consistent rules and enforce them for older kids.
