PRO TEAMS We’re wild about our pro teams here in Nashville — and we’ve got some inside scoop to prove it!
KICK IT UP! The 2018 - 19 Tennessee Titans are oozing with talent at every level. People and analysts seem to forget this “under the radar” team won
TENNESSEE TITANS:
a come-from-behind road playoff game at Kansas City last season.
One, Big
Tennessee Family BY NOAH GARRISON DAY
I
n the world of Tennessee Titans General Manager Jon Robinson, family is everything. Now in year three with the Titans, Robinson interweaves the idea of family throughout the club, from the coaches to the players to each member of the staff ... all the way to the fans. “Family is an extremely, extremely important, if not the most important, part of my daily routine,” Robinson says. It all starts at Robinson’s home with wife Jaimie and his two daughters. “They are at the forefront of why I get up and come to work every day,” says Robinson. With life as an NFL GM requiring long hours spent away from home, Robinson credits Jaimie with being the anchor of the family. “She’s the glue for us,” Robinson says, “And she’s the disciplinarian more so than I am,” he laughs. “I thought I would be the one to discipline, however I’m the big softie when I get home, because I spend so much time disciplining when I’m at work. It’s been good,” he says.
CONTENDER STATUS The start to the 2018 season hasn’t been easy.
14 The Family Manual 2018 - 2019
Titan’s starting QB Marcus Mariotta looks for the pass. After losing one of the longest games in NFL history in week one against Miami — optimism wavered. Starting quarterback Marcus Mariota looked shaky and got injured, big free agent signee and two-time Super Bowl Champion Malcolm Butler made a big play — but also got burned for a backbreaking touchdown. Derrick Henry didn’t give nearly the punch
“Take it one day at a time and just keep plugging away,” Robinson says.
Titans fans were hoping for (albeit he scored a touchdown that was disallowed because of a penalty), and Titans star tight end Delanie Walker went down with a season ending ankle injury. Enter week two versus a healthy Houston Texans team. The Titans used every single tool they possibly could to muster a gutsy win: a fake punt touchdown, clutch defense, an unexpected wildcard formation with Derrick Henry in the shotgun and a game-winning drive led by backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert. It was a masterpiece that could only be accomplished with a level of trust established between the coaches and the players. Week three against arguably the most talented roster in the NFL — the Jacksonville Jaguars — showcased that same trust with another gutsy performance and a beautiful 9 - 6
win. The season is early, but the trust has been long established with Robinson’s family philosophy.
The Preds are set to play 12 games on national television, obliterating
BIG MOVES According to Robinson, handling expectations is about doing the little things right and taking the journey one step at a time. “The only expectation I have is for us to go out and have a good day of practice today and to have a better day of practice tomorrow and to try and get a little bit better each day. Take it one day at a time and just keep plugging away and don’t look too far ahead, just focus on the now,” Robinson says. In his time with the Titans, Robinson has taken the team from a titanic disaster to a competitive club on the move. Consistent success largely comes down to trust. While the Titans have had a certain level of trust in their coaches and each other, they seek to establish that trust even further. Nobody can know for sure how the season is going to unfold, but Robinson is building a program that aims to do more with the amassed group of talent besides letting them play football — he’s building a family.

According to Predators President Sean Henry, Stanley Cup is always the standard. “I think it’s always Stanley Cup or bust for our organization who sets its goals so aggressively,” Henry says. High standards have paid big dividends for the team as the past two seasons have resulted in a Western Conference Championship and a Presidents Trophy Championship. “Our goal is to compete at the highest level; we’re in a position to win the Stanley Cup, and that’s our goal, but it starts with a good regular season to get to the playoffs, which is not a lay-up — we love the team that we have,” says Henry.
team in Nashville — quite possibly the NHL and maybe even in the U.S. — and
they know it. They’ve built something special and they captivate the Music City audience in a way that no one ever predicted. All of the attention brings high expectations, but in the end, only one trophy matters — the Stanley Cup.
“We’re in a position to win the Stanley Cup, and that’s our goal,” says Henry.
TALENT AT ALL LEVELS The 2018 - 19 team has one of the deepest assembled rosters in the league. The anchor starts in the net with Pekka Rinne — the massive 6’5” Finnish goaltender. Rinne is a cornerstone of the Predators, someone who has seen the highs and lows of the franchise throughout his career. He turns 36 in November, and if there’s a time for him to win it all, it’s now. Rinne’s accompanied by one of the best defensive corps in the league with P.K. Subban, Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm. Those four stand out for their strong skating agility along with their dynamic puck-moving ability in transitioning from defense to offense. Last season looked to be “the year” for the Preds. During the season, they looked great and often dominant, yet when they entered the playoffs, the engine seemed to stall, as if they couldn’t quite get to the next gear, collectively. The strength of the defense suddenly became a liability, as they gave up 27 goals in seven games in their season-ending series loss to the Winnipeg Jets. This season’s Preds have high expectations, a loaded roster and most importantly, a chance. Nothing is guaranteed, but that’s why fans love it. And all of Smashville, decked in gold, will be right there with them. Stay humble Smashville; let’s win the Cup!

NASHVILLE PREDS WHAT WE’VE HEARD “Last year just goes to show you that championship runs are comprised of a lot more than sheer talent and regular season success. You need a little bit of luck and the stars to align better sometimes. But this team isn’t going anywhere and neither is Smashville.” — Ryan Tillman “Love the energy of the crowd. Going to a game is a different experience than any other sport. As far as this year goes, I hope we can do as well as last year and make it to the Cup!” — Chandler Altenbern “Maybe the expectations weighed on them a bit, and they couldn’t find the same fight and passion that they had a year before despite the improved talent. If they can rediscover that fire, then they can really be dangerous this year.” —Trevor Loeb “The Predators were exciting last year with Subban and Forsberg leading the charge. Now with big game experience, Nashville is ready to make another run for Lord Stanley.” — Taylor Mottern “Last year was a disappointing play-off run; we looked weak, slow and sloppy in both series, and Winnipeg manhandled us. I look forward to seeing if the Predators can bounce back, have a great regular season and run to the Stanley Cup final. Nashville is in need of a championship.” — Tucker Day

“From the moment we stepped into Creek Wood Academy we knew that this was where our child belongs. We feel completely at home and at ease. The hardest part for a parent is to leave their child all day, but all the teachers and employees at Creek Wood help with that transition. Everyone knows our name and our child, which makes us feel that we are a part of something wonderful. We know this is a place our child can grow, learn, have fun and be in the best possible care outside of our home. There was never any doubt in our mind that our daughter would be happy at Creek Wood.” ~ Shelley P.

Walking through the doors of Mission Health Center, you’ll find a unique office built for families from the ground up.Your child will receive gentle, life-giving attention and care from the staff and doctors- or perhaps giving their own adjustments to Mr. Bear! Dr. Ronson has been serving patients through the art, science and philosophy of chiropractic for over a decade. He intentionally designed Mission Health Center to be a center for health and healing for the whole family. With over 25% of the patient population being children, many families have discovered a myriad of health issues that can be resolved (or prevented) by natural means cooperating with the body’s own healing mechanisms through chiropractic, nutrition, fitness and holistic wellness. Mission Health Center serves the entire community from prenatal and newborns to the elderly.

Morris Orthodontics D
207A Indian Lake Blvd. Hendersonville, TN 37075 (615) 431-2787
www.morrisbraces.com
r. J. Richard Morris has been voted “Best Orthodontist in Sumner County” in Nashville Parent, The Hendersonville Star News, The Hendersonville Standard and The Gallatin News Examiner on ten separate occasions. “It is incredibly rewarding” he says. “It lets us know that our patients and their families feel they are receiving excellent care and that they appreciate our high-tech, yet conservative approach to treatment.” Morris Orthodontics recently moved to their new office in Hendersonville, TN. Conveniently located at 207A Indian Lake Blvd., in front of Union University, the new practice home provides expert orthodontic care to patients in a comfortable and inviting environment. “We are thrilled with the design of our new building,” said Dr. Rich Morris. “It allows us to provide state-of-the-art orthodontic treatment, tailored to serving the individual needs of our patients and fellow community members.” His practice is a Mac-based paperless office that utilizes cutting-edge technology in the treatment of children and adults. Using a smile simulator, patients can see digital images of their before-and-after smiles before they even begin treatment. Dr. Morris not only uses clear and traditional braces, but is one of the largest providers of Invisalign in the Greater Nashville Area. Invisalign is a treatment that uses a set of clear customized aligners that straighten a smile, without being noticeable. The team at Morris Orthodontics also uses digital scanning to eliminate the need for messy and uncomfortable impression trays. The result has been pleased patients, from age 7 to 70. Claire Englar, who played “Violet” on Disney’s A.N.T. Farm, recently wrote to Dr. Morris “Thank you for helping me achieve a better smile! You have made a huge difference in my life!” While technology is clearly important to the practice, technology alone is not enough. As their New-Patient Coordinator said “I love the fact that we are not just straightening teeth, but we are helping to give patients a better quality of life by building their self esteem through a confident smile, and that we do this as a caring and devoted team.” Dr. Morris truly believes in the difference one person can make and in the responsibility each of us has for giving back. The Morris Orthodontics Volunteer Program has been featured in The Tennessean, The Hendersonville Star News and the Fairview Plantation magazine. The program rewards Morris Orthodontics patients who contribute their time to community service. The response to the program has been overwhelming and it gives everyone a reason to smile. Dr. Morris has personally experienced the satisfaction of giving back, on a dental mission trip to Guatemala, helping families who lacked access to regular dental care.
Dr. J. Richard Morris, Jr.
When Dr. Morris isn’t working, he enjoys being involved in the local community, teaching a weekly cycle class at the Sumner County YMCA, and supporting local sports teams, and events. He regularly contributes to fundraisers for schools and non-profit organizations and is proud to be able to support so many worthy causes in Sumner County.

Which School is Right for Your Child?
N
arrow down your options before making visits to schools of interest. Keep these things in mind:
LOCATION
Busy families need to consider this and whether Mom and Dad can connect the dots for morning and afternoon drop-off, after-school activities and pick-ups.
THE SCHOOL ITSELF
SAINT HENRY SCHOOL
Your child will be spending days on end in this environment — do you agree that this is the best possible place for him?
COST
Private school tuition is the number one consideration for may parents. For those making education a top priority, finding financial aid, taking out loans and even downsizing a lifestyle to make private education possible is all on the table.
KNOW YOUR CHILD
Will he be happier in a heavily structured environment or one that’s somewhat structured? Are arts or athletics offerings available for what your child needs? Is curriculum appropriate for your hands-on learner?

The leadership of a school and its teaching staff will play key roles in your family’s life going forward. Make sure you are comfortable with school personnel. Seek feedback from currently enrolled parents.
ASK QUESTIONS
Before your visit, brainstorm the things that are important to you about your child’s education, then ask a lot of questions when you are on the tours — only don’t be obnoxious. Once you’ve determined the right school for your child, you still have to get in!
School Visits Hold the Key
L
isten to yourself when you visit potential schools for your child. Thing back. Would you have wanted to go to school here? Consider these important areas:
ENVIRONMENT
A stable school environment is best for kids. If teacher turnover is high, that’s a red flag. However, if there’s a new principal, some turnover might be good.
PHILOSOPHIES
These can range from traditional to highly religious to open and innovative to everything in between. Ultimately, the choice of schools that you and your child make should be because it’s the best educational experience for your child.
Call today to schedule a tour.
615-833-3610

CLASSROOM
Look for a feeling of welcome organization and for displays of student work, not prefab posters. When it comes to class size, smaller is best.
TEACHERS
How does the school handle professional development for its teaching staff? Are any of them National Board Certified? If they are, it shows the school is attracting and keeping good teachers.
An educational journey from infant to adolescence.

ASSESSMENT
Tests shouldn’t be the only way to measure student success; look for student portfolios and teacher evaluations as well. If a school’s test scores are high, delve deeper. What is that school doing to keep the scores high?
EXTRA-CURRICULARS
Make sure the school you select offers lots of extra-curricular classes fitting your child’s interests.
NEEDS
Info about programs for kids with special needs, or who are gifted, will give you an idea of how well the school meets individual student needs.

DEBUNKING PRIVATE SCHOOL MYTHS
H
ere are four myths that may help you view private schools in a new way:
1. They’re only for the rich. While it’s a fact that private schools are chosen more often by families with higher incomes, it’s also true that a proportion of students at private schools receive financial aid.
2. They’re not the “real world.” The independent school culture runs opposite of the often toxic values of popular culture. However, they do prepare kids for life in the real world.
3. Boarding schools are for problem kids. Boarding schools are normal practice for families on the East and West coasts, but in the
South, sending kids away to school is perceived as “something's wrong.” According to the National Association of Independent Schools, private therapeutic schools are different from college-prep schools, and it’s important to recognize the difference.
ment of students with learning differences in many independent schools. It’s true that “really smart” kids graduate from independent schools, but the thought is that private schools create the optimum conditions for emphasizing each student’s native intelligence.
4. They are only for really smart kids.
