race:

here is very little concensus in the country’s scientific community about when a vaccine wil be available for coronavirus, but if the federal government’s Operation Warp Speed (OWS) comes through, 300 million doses of safe and effective vaccines will be ready by January, 2021. Operation Warp Speed is a joint Health and Human Services and Department of Defense program created to accelerate development of coronavirus vaccines, treatments and diagnostics. Dr. Moncef Slaoui, the chief scientific advisor to OWS, has overseen billions of dollars awarded to vaccine makers in an effort to make a vaccine a reality faster than at any time in world history. Currently, OWS is supporting five companies in the vaccine race. Those companies are Moderna; AstraZeneca; Pfizer; Johnson & Johnson; and Merck. Pfizer appears to be the company in the lead along with Moderna, followed by AstraZeneca. Currently, Pfizer is conducting trials internationally, with locations set up or planned in the U.S., Brazil, Turkey and Argentina. J&J’s vaccine is the only single-dose vaccine to enter late-stage studies in the U.S., though it won’t likely be the first vaccine out of the gate. But even if a vaccine becomes available by January, the process of getting it to consumers involves pharmaceutical factories, logistics and the ability to control the temperature of the vaccine. “If you are looking for a magic wand, you won’t find one in vaccines,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. “That said, vaccines will play a substantial role in reducing the epidemic,” he adds. A vaccine that works is critical towards ending the pandemic which has killed upwards of 210,000 in the U.S. While millions of doses may be ready by early 2021, the world population is 7 billion, so the race to vaccinate everyone won’t be over any time in the near future. FLU. COVID. Or A One-Two PUNCH? Flu vaccine is important to get every fall. But this year, it’s especially important while we’re also dealing with COVID. Some experts are concerned about a potential one-two punch, so take extra precaution for your family and get your flu vaccines.

drive-thru

Perhaps this winter we will bundle up more and spend more time outside than we have in winters’ past. That’s because the risk of spreading coronavirus is heightened in enclosed spaces. To enjoy friends and gathering during cold weather, the winter of 2021 just may include garage gatherings with the doors up and everyone bundled up. You can also get together around a bonfire or fire pit.

There are plenty of locations where you can get tested for COVID-19 as seen on tn.gov/ governor/covid-19/get-tested.html. The following locations are drive-thru and require no appointment:

immunity? According to medical experts, there are no vitamins or supplements known to help prevent COVID-19. However, regular exercise and stress management such as deep breathing and medication may help prime your immune system to fight off infections. VITAMIN C As an antioxidant, vitamin C can help reduce inflammation — and lung inflammation is a severe symptom of COVID-19 If you’re healthy, it doesn’t hurt to start taking vitamin C now. Food sources: broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach, cantaloupe, orange, grapefruit, strawberries. VITAMIN D Vitamin D supplementation is stated to decrease the chance of respiratory tract infections, based on studies published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics. Food sources: salmon, tuna, sardines, fortified cereals/juices, milk, cheese, egg yolks. B-COMPLEX VITAMINS Vitamin B6 is essential to keeping your immune system in top condition. Food sources: kidney beans, poultry, meat, milk, eggs, fortified cereals/bread, sunflower seeds. ZINC Zinc has been found to help produce and activate T-cells (t-lymphocytes), which trigger the body to respond to infections, according to the National Institutes of Health. Lives disrupted, yet virtually in-tact BY MICHAEL W. ALDRICH

RISE OF ZOOM

R

emember last April when practically the whole world started “zooming” over night? As

lockdowns closed schools and offices making working from home mandatory, families everywhere grasped for a way to carry on at a distance. And though up against the likes of Microsoft Teams, Google Meet (Hangouts), Skype and more, it was Zoom that made the transition from brand to verb. With approximately 90,000 schools throughout 20 countries having used the service, the videoconferencing software platform has helped parents, students and teachers stay connected in a time of confusion and uncertainty. If it felt like everyone was suddenly using Zoom, that’s because they were. In April, Zoom peaked at more than 300 million daily meeting participants – up from 10 million in December, 2019. Part of Zoom’s coronavirus success is likely due to the fact that individuals can join and host meetings, with some limitations, for free – although it also saw a steep rise in paying business users. As Zoom gained popularity, we all laughed at the “Zoom fails” of people standing up without pants on, or forgetting to mute while using the bathroom. The platform also came under increased scrutiny, with concerns raised about security and privacy. One issue earned

future, or will our love affair with video technology dissolve as soon as the virus goes away? Given a real choice, will we really want to stay on screens – or will we leave our microphones permanently on mute? Only time will tell. In the meantime, we’ve compiled some Zoom do’s and don’ts to help you look your best and to keep your kids safe.

DO’S & DON’TS FOR ZOOM CALLS WITH KIDS

It’s common to forget you’re on camera. Part of looking good means acting as you would in person. Avoid low angles. It’s one of the cardinal rules in camerawork: keep the camera eye-level or higher. Give your laptop some lift by stacking it on a bunch of big books.

a hard time remembering when to log on. Eliminate distractions. No snacking during class. Turn off music or the TV in the background. Use the restroom before class begins.

Though you can use the same meeting ID for each session, Zoom recommends teachers use random meeting IDs (which is an option when they’re creating the invitation). It’s less convenient, but it’s

classes. Raise your hand instead of interrupting. Practice using the program. Whether you are using Zoom, Google Classroom or another program, it’s important to know how it works. Be sure to give it a test run. Use headphones with a mic. It’s easier to be heard if you wear headphones with an external microphone. Skip the virtual backgrounds. While some programs have fun backgrounds, it can be super distracting.

These optional little icons let participants raise their hands, give a thumbsup or thumbs-down and even let the teacher know a break is needed — all without interrupting the class. Be yourself. Don’t do or say anything you’ll regret later — or wouldn’t be happy to be made public. Teachers can and do record and save sessions. Never join a meeting or accept a request from someone you don’t actually know.

Ryman’s outdoor stage

I

n a small sign of good things to come, the Ryman Auditorium is open once again for day time self-guided tours — with all safety measures in place — and that’s not all that’s new. Through a sponsorship agreement with PNC Bank, the Ryman will open a new outdoor stage on the Fourth Avenue side of the property by 2021. “PNC Plaza at Ryman Auditorium” renderings reveal a small stage for outdoor performances. Similar to previous expansions, the project will leave the original 1892 auditorium untouched. “We hope the PNC Plaza at the Ryman will connect communities, neighborhoods and generations to create a stronger, more vibrant region,” says Mike Johnson, PNC regional president for Tennessee. We hope so, too. And we also hope live concerts at the Ryman will resume again soon, because there’s no place like home. To learn more, visit ryman.com.

unprecedented growth

A

ccording to Zillow, experts across the nation forecast that Nashville’s housing market growth will last into 2021 and that’s good because downtown Nashville has erected a multitude of residential buildings with more on the way. Only time will tell how optimistic we can be about local construction growth. While building has exploded in Nashville over the past decade, here’s a quick look at what’s exciting to expect in the year ahead.

Revitalized downtown

• CAPITOL VIEW: The 32-acre mixed-use development located in Nashville’s North Gulch at the intersection of Charlotte and 11th Avenues provides office, retail and living space. Retail stores recently opened include CareNow Urgent Care, Central BBQ, Clean Juice, Club Pilates, Drybar, M.L. Rose Craft Beer & Burgers, Publix, Starbucks, Valerie Boutique, Vici, Your Pie and more. Learn more at capitolviewnashville.com.

• FIFTH + BROADWAY: Downtown Nashville will kick into gear when anchor tenant Assembly Food Hall opens next spring. Signed on are Boqueria, Donut Distillery, Edley’s Bar-B-Que, Hattie B’s Hot Chicken, Hattie Jane’s Creamery, Jeni’s Ice Cream, The Liege Waffle Co., Prince’s Hot Chicken, The Pharmacy Burger, Shake Shack, Slim & Husky’s, Steam Boys, Smokin’ Chicken and more. The $450 million Fifth + Broadway development will have the Assembly Food Hall on one side of a pedestrian thoroughfare, the other side will include two levels of retail space and above it, apartments that will wrap around the parking garage, shielding it from view. In addition to food and retail, a 25-story office building fills out the project. The developer is Spectrum/ Emery. Learn more at fifthandb.com. • THE MUSIC CITY GRAND PRIX: A new sound is coming to Nashville next August with the newest NTT INDYCAR SERIES race. The three-day international festival will be staged on a temporary grand prix circuit in downtown Nashville around the Nissan Stadium campus. The 2.17-mile temporary track will race across the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge into downtown Nashville and back. Visit musiccitygp.com to find more details on the event, sign up for Club RPM or become a Founder.

Assembly Food Hall, anchors the $450 million Fifth + Broadway development.

• NASHVILLE YARDS: Southwest Value Partners is behind this ambitious development project, and they expect to drop $1 billion to complete the area over the next several years. Nashville Yards includes Amazon’s executive headquarters — the “Operations Center of Excellence” — at 1000 Church Street. The 15-acre mixed-use site will include a 1.3-acre public park, the 25-floor Grand Hyatt Hotel (now open), 1,000 residential units, 400,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space. Build out will also include a Park MGM hotel, a 4,000-capacity music venue, a luxury theater complex, a live entertainment club and more. Keep up with developments at nashvilleyards.com.

More: • Federal Courthouse: The new building at 719 Church Street is set to open in 2021.

Into 2022, 2023 • Four Season Hotel and Private Residences: a 40-story, five-star hotel at 151 1st Ave. S., developed by The Congress Group / AECOM Capital Real Estate. The Hermitage Hotel in downtown Nashville is currently the only existing five-star hotel in the region. The Four Seasons Hotel will be the city’s third-tallest building. • Peabody Union: A mixed-use luxury commercial and residential project from Hensler Development Group & Stiles. • Facebook in Gallatin: A project years in the making, the social media behemoth will construct an $800 million data center that will cover nearly 1 million square feet and bring hundreds of wellpaying jobs to the area.

Nashville Yards will include an entertainment district.

“From the moment we stepped into Creek Wood Academy we knew that this was where our child belongs. We feel completely at home and at ease. The hardest part for a parent is to leave their child all day, but all the teachers and employees at Creek Wood help with that transition. Everyone knows our name and our child, which makes us feel that we are a part of something wonderful. We know this is a place our child can grow, learn, have fun and be in the best possible care outside of our home. There was never any doubt in our mind that our daughter would be happy at Creek Wood.” ~ Shelley P.

W

hile you may think that affording private school is impossible for your family, there are ways to make it happen. Here are great tips from The National Association of Independent Schools (nais.org): • Every independent school has its own policies about who receives financial aid, what type and how much. You cannot know if your family qualifies for aid until your submit an application that allows evaluation of

your situation. • To determine your eligibility for financial aid, you must submit an application form and financial statements to the schools of your choice.

for other children. • Your financial "need" is the gap between how much financial officers determine what your family can afford and the cost of tuition and fees.

• There is no income limit that automatically make your family ineligible for financial aid.

• Types of financial aid include grants, merit scholarships, tuition loans by a private lender, tuition payment plans and sibling discounts.

• Financial aid officers take into account your income, assets and expenses, including educational costs

• Many families combine financial aid options for their children.

Matching Your Child to a School: Individual Needs Matter

PCA is a classical, interdenominational Christian school whose mission is to teach students to seek God’s truth and equip them with the tools for a lifetime of learning. PCA recently added more than 42,000 square feet to the current campus including 25 new classrooms, a multipurpose gymnasium and a library/media center. PCA offers a biblically-based, college preparatory academic program including over 30 dual enrollment offerings. Students enjoy a balance of academics and service opportunities along with numerous athletics and fine arts productions. PCA varsity athletes compete in the TSSAA. Before-and-after-school programs available.

Y

ou put a great deal of effort into checking out the basics of a private school education such as costs, location, academics and specializations, but that's only a part of the picture, says Dona Matthews, an educational specialist and co-author of Beyond Intelligence: Secrets for Raising Happily Productive Kids (House of Anansi; 2014). "There is no one size fits all," says Matthews. "No matter if it's one of the best schools, it's a question of looking at the best fit for your child," she adds. Matthews suggests parents look at the whole child when matching to the right school. Is your child highly engaged or does he need opportunities? Is your child innately shy or will he do better in an encouraging, supportive environment? Does he have a special talent or specialized interest you want to make sure is nurtured? In addition, look at the culture of the school from the leadership on down. "How well do they communicate?" Matthews asks. "Is the leadership stable, and what is their reputation?" Matthews says you should visit the schools on your short list repeatedly. "Beyond open houses, go for a tour, talk to teachers and other people who aren't trying to promote the school," Matthews says. "Go with your child on a shadow day to see how he feels about it." Also, most schools are on social media. Get a real feel for day-to-day happenings on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Matching your child to the right school takes time. Start early and do your homework for the best outcome.
