ZOO BABIES! New arrivals, giraffe preservation and more are happening at the Nashville Zoo.
C
reatures of all kinds are born at the Nashville Zoo in any given year. There are always spiny-headed tree lizards and lorikeets on the way along with a slew of exoticsounding friends. Mazi, (on the cover and photo right), a Masai giraffe, arrived in February 2017 at six-feet, three-inches tall and 163 pounds. He’s now in his toddlerhood! In 2016, the Zoo donated $10,000 to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation as the threat to the wild population of giraffes is severe. Join the effort to save wild giraffes by making a donation in Mazi’s name at nashvillezoo. org/donate — and go see Mazi! 2017 ZOO BABIES INCLUDE: • A male clouded leopard. (The first to be born via artificial insemination!) • Four red ruffed lemurs • Two female red pandas • A Brazilian rainbow boa The zoo is currently monitoring a pregnant anteater; stay tuned at nashvillezoo.org. CHILD CARE
Choosing Quality CHILD CARE The perks of outstanding care and how to find it.
LONG-TERM BENEFITS OF HIGH-QUALITY CHILD CARE
I
t’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent: choosing the right care for your little one. The obvious is making sure your child is in good hands while you’re doing your daily routine. In addition, child care with consistent, supportive and educational features has long-term benefits to the children enrolled in them. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), benefits can include: • Enhanced brain growth and child development • Greater success in school (better math and language skills) • Better cognition, social skills, interpersonal relationships and self-regulation • Decreased need for special education and related services later • Lower adolescent pregnancy and juvenile crime rates • Higher graduation rates The AAP states: “When care is consistent, emotionally supportive and appropriate to the child’s age, development and temperament, there is a positive effect on children and families.”

“From the moment we stepped into Creek Wood Academy we knew that this was where our child belongs. We feel completely at home and at ease. The hardest part for a parent is to leave their child all day, but all the teachers and employees at Creek Wood help with that transition. Everyone knows our name and our child, which makes us feel that we are a part of something wonderful. We know this is a place our child can grow, learn, have fun and be in the best possible care outside of our home. There was never any doubt in our mind that our daughter would be happy at Creek Wood.” ~ Shelley P.

HOW TO PICK A DOC + DENTIST FOR YOUR TLC:
Your child’s quality health care begins with you. Choose doctors and dentists you admire and with whom you and your kids are comfortable.
Interview two or three pediatricians and dentists before choosing who to go with — you want the BEST care for your kids!
W
hen the promise of stickers and lollipops can’t even woo your child to the doctor or dentist, it may be time for a change. Or, perhaps you’re expecting a baby or are new in the area. Choosing a pediatrician and a pediatric dentist for your kids requires a little research. After all, your pediatrician will be with your child from birth through adolescence, so you need to have a trusting, ongoing relationship. A pediatric dentist is highly specialized in caring for the littlest pearly whites and the jittery emotions of kids faced with cavities.

Morris Orthodontics
D 711 East Main Street, Ste. 110 Hendersonville, TN 37075 (615) 431-2787 www.morrisbraces.com
r. J. Richard Morris has been voted “Best Orthodontist in Sumner County” in Nashville Parent, The Hendersonville Star News, The Hendersonville Standard and The Gallatin News Examiner on nine separate occasions. “It is incredibly rewarding,” he says. “It lets us know that our patients and their families feel they are receiving excellent care and that they appreciate our high-tech, yet conservative approach to treatment.” Dr. Morris is a Vanderbilt-trained Orthodontist with a Georgia Tech degree in engineering. He has drawn upon his diverse background to create a state-of-the-art practice that uses the most advanced equipment and technology, like the lowest radiation digital x-rays and the highest quality digital photography. The practice is the first one in Hendersonville to offer 3D scanning, replacing the need for messy impressions. His Mac-based computer system offers the greatest level of security to protect patient privacy. An on-site lab allows for the custom fabrication of patient appliances with shorter turn-around times. He is experienced in the latest orthodontic theories, practices and products, such as Invisalign®, and has been recognized by Invisalign® as a Preferred Provider for both adults and teens. His approach is conservative and he will inform parents when their children should delay treatment to ensure the ideal timeframe for orthodontic success. The result has been pleased patients, from age 7 to 70. Claire Engler, who plays “Violet” on Disney’s A.N.T. Farm, recently wrote to Dr. Morris “Thank you for helping me achieve a better smile! You have made a huge difference in my life!” Dr. Morris truly believes in the difference one person can make and in the responsibility each of us has for giving back. The Morris Orthodontics Volunteer Program has been featured in The Tennessean, The Hendersonville Star News and the Fairview Plantation magazine. The program rewards Morris Orthodontics patients who contribute their time to community service. The response to the program has been overwhelming and it gives everyone a reason to smile. Dr. Morris has personally experienced the satisfaction of giving back, on a dental mission trip to Guatemala, helping families who lacked access to regular dental care. Dr. Morris feels that he has one of the best orthodontic teams in Tennessee and is particularly proud of their patient-centric focus. As one of his team members put it best: “I love the fact that we are not just straightening teeth, but we are helping to give patients a better quality of life by building their self- esteem through a confident smile and that we do this as a caring and devoted team.” When Dr. Morris isn’t working, he enjoys being involved in the local community, teaching a weekly cycle class at the Sumner County YMCA, and supporting local sports teams. He is also an avid triathlete and has sponsored several triathlons for children. He regularly contributes to fundraisers for schools and non-profit organizations and is proud to sponsor the Hendersonville High School Golden Girls Dance Team Clinics for children in grades K-8 and numerous youth athletic and community organizations in Sumner County.

PARTIES
6
Trendy DELISH
Chic unicorns are trending, and kids can’t get enough of ‘em. Cakes, cookies, decor and more!
Planning an epic party doesn’t happen overnight! It takes time ... and inspiration. Here’s what’s trending with a few ideas to get you started on your child’s next big party adventure.
PARTY THEMES
FOOD
UNICORN
METALLIC
Sure, everyone has food at the party, but a trending theme is planning the party around a certain food itself. One in particular — TACOS! They’re easy, fast and yummy. Donuts, hot dogs and ice cream are other ones. Go with what your child likes. You can even go so far as to shape the cake to look like the chosen food, too!
Unicorns are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and not just in the form of trendy frappuccinos at your favorite coffee shop! You’ll notice a more sophisticated style of the mythical creature with a playful face rather than the cartoon style of yesteryear. Mix it up with some flowers and glitter to create a magical place for a perfect unicorn party.
Whether you have a posh or dapper child, a stylish party starts with metallics! From the invites down to the decor, either golds, rose-gold (trending) or silver used in varying ways helps create a modern look for any age. Use balloons, pompoms and streamers too add to the festive decor.
BOHO
A night-time party is fun for kids who can run around in the dark. Those trendy videos of people dressed in black with glow sticks strapped to their bodies while dancing around are a hit with kids. Ask the party guests to wear black, and let them have fun affixing glow sticks. Keep the rest of the party simple and easy. The kids can dance outdoors, or you can clear the living room floor and put on a show for the rest of the parents.
NATURE The trending nature-themed party right now is a “favorite animal” party. Pick a specific critter and stick to just that one. Another current idea is focusing on a specific part of nature like the ocean, jungle or forest. Popular right now are oceanthemed creatures like whales, sharks and mermaids (even though they’re mythical creatures).
Flowers are great for parties — they make decorating a piece of cake! A Boho party adds lots of different flowers and floor pillows thrown about for the kids to sit on. It’s all about relaxation. Drape sheer fabric around for extra effect. Floral headbands are easy for the kids to make — fun to wear and keep as a favor, too.

Your child will be spending days on end in this environment — do you agree that this is the best possible place for him?
COST Private school tuition is the number one consideration for may parents. For those making education a top priority, finding financial aid, taking out loans and even downsizing a lifestyle to make private education possible is all on the table.
KNOW YOUR CHILD Will he be happier in a heavily structured environment or one that’s somewhat structured? Are arts or athletics offerings available for what your child needs? Is curriculum appropriate for your hands-on learner?
EDUCATORS & LEADERSHIP The leadership of a school and its teaching staff will play key roles in your family’s life going forward. Make sure you are comfortable with school personnel. Seek feedback from currently enrolled parents.
ASK QUESTIONS Before your visit, brainstorm the things that are important to you about your child’s education, then ask a lot of questions when you are on the tours — only don’t be obnoxious. Once you’ve determined the right school for your child, you still have to get in!
School Visits Hold the Key
L
isten to yourself when you visit potential schools for your child. Thing back. Would you have wanted to go to school here? Consider these important areas:
ENVIRONMENT q
STEM LAB
q
q
A stable school environment is best for kids. If teacher turnover is high, that’s a red flag. However, if there’s a new principal, some turnover might be good.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES STARTING IN KINDERGARTEN
ATHLETICS STARTING IN 5TH GRADE
PHILOSOPHIES These can range from traditional to highly religious to open and innovative to everything in between. Ultimately, the choice of schools that you and your child make should be because it’s the best educational experience for your child.
PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM STARTING AT 12 MONTHS q
CLASSROOM Look for a feeling of welcome organization and for displays of student work, not prefab posters. When it comes to class size, smaller is best.
TEACHERS How does the school handle professional development for its teaching staff? Are any of them National Board Certified? If they are, it shows the school is attracting and keeping good teachers.
q
52 HOURS OF COLLEGE CREDIT
ASSESSMENT
NEEDS Info about programs for kids with special needs, or who are gifted, will give you an idea of how well the school meets individual student needs.
q
Make sure the school you select offers lots of extra-curricular classes fitting your child’s interests.
16 AP & DE CLASSES
q
EXTRA-CURRICULARS
OUTSTANDING FINE ARTS
q
Tests shouldn’t be the only way to measure student success; look for student portfolios and teacher evaluations as well. If a school’s test scores are high, delve deeper. What is that school doing to keep the scores high?

Debunking Private School Myths
F
amilies who decide not to pursue a private education for their kids often believe something they have heard or there’s something they intrinsically believe about them. Here are four myths that may help you view private schools in a new way:
1. They’re only for the rich.
While it’s a fact that private schools are chosen more often by families with higher incomes, it’s also true that a proportion of students at private schools receive financial aid. Also, many families have their children’s educations partially funded by grandparents as an investment in the future.
2. They’re not the “real world.”
That’s true. The independent school culture is counter-cultural in the sense that it runs opposite of the often toxic values of popular culture. However, they do prepare kids for life in the real world.
3. Boarding schools are for problem kids.
Challenging Academics. Inclusive Christian Community.
Boarding schools are normal practice for families on the East and West coasts, but in the South, sending kids away to school is perceived as “something is wrong.” According to the National Association of Independent Schools, private therapeutic schools are different from college-prep schools, and it’s important to recognize the difference.
4. They are only for really smart kids.
Pre-Kindergarten — Grade 12. Coeducational. FranklinRoadAcademy.com 68 The Family Manual 2017 - 2018

Truth be told, there is a segment of students with learning differences in many independent schools. It’s true that “really smart” kids graduate from independent schools, but the thought is that private schools create the optimum conditions for emphasizing each student’s native intelligence. Should You Choose a FaithBased School?
Nashville’s Most College Connected Academy
U
nlike public schools, private schools can combine their academic programs with spiritual guidance which is an appealing aspect to many parents concerned about their kids being “out there” in the world Here are a few things to consider:
What are the unique features of a faith-based school?
Lipscomb Academy is a PreK-12th opportunity for Academic Excellence. Students can earn a year or more of college credit by graduation, have access to dozens of Ph.D. professors and countless experiences at Lipscomb University each year.
lipscomb.edu/journey
The learning is influenced by faith. With all subject areas, faith-based schools (there are numerous ones here in Middle Tennessee) infuse the faith perspective into everything their students do.
What are the benefits of a faith-based education? For families where faith is a priority, the school becomes a partner in helping their children develop an intimate understanding of and connection to their faith. But it’s not about indoctrination — different theories, world views and ideologies are introduced and framed next to the student’s belief system. This helps kids to become free thinkers and respectful of other faiths.
How do I know if a faithbased school is a good fit for my child? Parents have to look for what best matches the environment in their home. That may be a cultural, religious or pedagogical decision. They should be asking themselves, “How does my child learn best? What sort of schools match up to our faith system?” Parents also need to consider the spectrum of different religious orders. For instance, Christianity has several denominations, so parents need to look into that details when considering faith-based schools for their child’s education. Source: discoverchristianschools.com

Money Matters
M
isconceptions abound about getting help with paying for private school. In fact, a significant amount of financial aid dollars goes to families who fall into the middle income bracket and is needs-based. Many schools require parents to submit an online form outlining their financial picture; typically it’s a branch of the National Association of Independent Schools called School & Student Services (SSS; sssbynais. org/parents). Many different avenues can help you afford private school: scholarships, financial aid, load programs and payment plans through the school itself, but options don’t end there. FinAid, an award-winning website offering financial aid info, advice and tools has applications answers to questions about savings plans, scholarships and loans. Learn more at finaid.org.
The fall 2017 edition of Nashville Parent’s Private School & Enrichment Directory is available now in print and online at nashvilleparent. com. Inside, find the info you need to know about area private schools. NEW for 2017! Try our interactive map to locate schools in your desired area.
