Welcome to

Children’s Medical Center serving families for over 70 years

We See the Importance of Regular Vision Screenings From birth until about age 8, a child’s eyes and brain form vital connections. Anything that blocks or blurs vision in one or both eyes can slow down or prevent these connections. If that happens, the brain might not fully recognize the images seen by one or both eyes. Then, the brain begins to ignore the images seen by the otherwise healthy eye, and the eye becomes weaker, losing vision strength (acuity). This eye is then referred to as “amblyopic.” Most children with amblyopia won’t complain of vision problems. Over time, they become used to having good vision in one eye and poor vision in the other. Often, a parent or teacher might realize that a child is struggling with a vision problem — maybe noticing crossed eyes, frequent squinting, or tilting the head to see better. Some kids have poor depth perception and trouble seeing in three dimensions. Regular vision screenings by health care providers are an important part of finding any problems in kids.

We’ll be there when your family needs us the most.

PRIORITIZE YOUR KIDS

ommy, when can I have a phone?” asks my 7 year old as we patiently sit in Great Clips waiting for his haircut. “Not for awhile Will,” I reply back and continue on with my wise mommy knowledge. “You know, I was 18 when I got my first phone.” His eyes grow five times their size. “What? Why? I wouldn’t have wanted to be around during your time Mommy!” He laughs. I laugh. Not sure if I was laughing because my 7 year old basically called me a dinosaur, or if I find humor in the fact that he already recognizes that not having a phone until you’re 18 is abnormal. It’s crazy how phones and tablets weren’t needed before. What did we do? Times seemed simpler; we made plans in advance, wrote sticky notes and stuck them on the fridge: “Went to grocery! Be home soon!” That seemed to work well. Just a landline and some sticky notes. Technology has consumed our lives. I admit, I panic if I leave my phone at home. It’s not the end of the world, but it feels that way. It’s an essential part of my life! Yes, it has its benefits, and hard to admit, we really do need technology to keep up with this fast-paced life. When our kids see everyone — including their parents — constantly checking their devices, naturally they want to do that too, or, they beg for our undivided attention. Which they should. There is a fine balance between reaping the benefits of a helpful device, and letting it take us away from our family. My stomach turns when I see parents looking down when their child is trying to tell them a story; or when a family is sitting together on their devices. This is when that line gets crossed. There has to be balance. Set ground rules — tablets only on the weekends, or only one hour of tech time per day. Whatever it is, we can control it. We can control the when and why it’s time for our kids to get their first phone — perhaps they are involved with multiple sports and mom or dad work full-time, therefore, they may need a phone for after-school hours and emergencies. Life is flying by; the kids are growing. It’s easy for me to say ‘get off your devices!’ but I’m guilty of over-using, too. Right now I’m at the park with my little girl and I’m putting his phone down to be with her at the park. Set limitations and find balance with this technological world we live in. Our family and kids come first. Enjoy your kids right now!

Toward the end of my pregnancy, I did a lot of squats over an exercise ball to help my body get ready for labor.” Lura Landoll

“First pregnancy, I walked to the gym, ran/lifted and walked up hill back home. Second pregnancy I did lots of walking and free weights at home. I went to the driving range the day before delivery.” Renée Merz Colaço

“Yoga stretches/poses, which helped with backache.” Julie Schaefer Walson

“I walked everyday and did squats as long as I was able. Well, I was still able, but a little top heavy.” Louanne Cress Heist

“Weights and cardio until I was 12 weeks and couldn’t make it to the Y without vomiting.” Janna Rhoden

PROTECT HIS VISION Here are more ways to help protect your child’s eyes from problems or injuries. AVOID RISKY ACTIVITIES Using paintball and BB guns without the proper eye protection can cause serious injury. Make sure there is adult supervision and they are at the appropriate age for the activity. TAKE OUT CONTACTS It’s important for you to help your kids clean and replace lenses (as recommended) before bedtime. Sleeping with contacts can increase the risk of infection and even loss of vision. WEAR SUNGLASSES Kid’s eyes are at higher risk to sunlight and harmful UV rays. Babiators.com has affordable sunglasses, and will replace them for free if broken or lost. MINIMIZE SCREEN TIME Too much screen time at young ages can result in vision issues in kids, earlier. Get out the books and read instead.

A FIT PREGNANCY, IS A

EXPECTING

HAPPY PREGNANCY! BY AMANDA HAYWARD

Exercising with a bun in the oven is good for you mentally and physically — and it just may make your labor go quicker, too!

FITNESS DURING PREGNANCY

Some expecting moms want to jump right on

the treadmill as soon as they’re over the nausea, and others can’t even think about getting out of their comfy chair. Of course, every pregnant mom needs rest, but finding a balance between resting and moving has health benefits for moms and babies on all levels of health. Anna Parizh, D.O., with Kettering Physician Network Women’s Health and Fort Hamilton Hospital, says that exercise during pregnancy has benefits beyond just physical

— it can decrease psychological stressors, anxiety, respiratory health, flexibility and more. “Regular exercise may help patients avoid excessive weight gain, decrease the possibility of a large fetus and reduce the risk of gestational diabetes,” says Parizh. “There is also some evidence it may reduce the risk of high blood pressure associated with pregnancy called gestational hypertension or preeclampsia,” she adds. If you’d like to have a quicker, smoother labor, (who wouldn’t?) a regular exercise routine may

do the trick. It will certainly help you feel better. “Regular exercise has been shown to decrease labor duration and may even aid in quicker recovery for some,” Parizh says.

“COMMON-SENSE RULE” With exercise and pregnancy, what’s safe and what isn’t? It’s all about your overall health and what exercise routines you followed before getting pregnant. Being physically active throughout pregnancy has a multitude of health benefits, but deciding to train for a marathon

or give hot yoga a try can cause more harm than good if you’ve never done that before. “Keeping a light or moderate exercise routine is a great way to stay fit during pregnancy, and has not been shown to cause miscarriage, preterm birth or any additional risks in uncomplicated pregnancies,” says Parizh. “A pregnant woman should always be cognizant of her own limits and follow ‘the common-sense rule’ which translates to: if it doesn’t feel comfortable, is painful or puts you at risk for falling, stop immediately, (please turn the page)

change positions, rest and hydrate.” If you’re a woman who jogged, swam or followed a certain fitness routine before getting pregnant, it’s OK to keep going. As long as your doctor gives you a thumbs up and you’re having a lowrisk pregnancy, you can continue exercising and modifying as needed.

MODIFYING MOVEMENTS As you move through your pregnancy, trimester to trimester, modifying your exercises is related to how you’re feeling. The further along you are in pregnancy, the more uncomfortable you will start to feel. Know when it’s time to make adjustments. “As pregnancy progresses and the body undergoes normal physiological changes, exercise routine will usually need to be modified in order to remain effective and more importantly safe for both Mom and Baby,” says Parizh. After the first trimester, it’s best to avoid exercises that involve lying on your back. Once you reach the third trimester, avoid any sudden or quick, jerky movements or overstretching. Change your exercises to make yourself more comfortable by using a pillow to prop up; switching from sitting or standing; or lying on your side. Most importantly, you know best, so monitor your fluid intake, fatigue and balance to avoid problems. If something is abnormal, stop and call your doctor.

20

April 2019

IDEAL FITNESS PROGRAMS Good exercise programs during pregnancy may include low-to-moderate activities such as walking, jogging, aerobics, dancing, swimming and cycling. In addition, strength movements such as resistance training, stretching, yoga and pilates are good, according to Parizh. “Pregnant women should aim to achieve about 150 minutes of exercise per week (preferably spreading aerobic activity throughout the week), with the goal of building up to 30-minute sessions four to seven times per week,” she says. If you haven’t engaged in any regular exercise prior to your pregnancy, stick to low-impact exercises including walking, aqua aerobics and any other low-intensity workouts. Going for 10 - 15 minutes at a time is a great way to start. Most importantly, follow your inner compass — if it hurts, don’t do it. “The benefits of exercise in pregnancy are multiple, including its valuable effects on both physical and mental health, and should be incorporated into fit living,” suggests Parizh. “If there is any concern that your regimen is either too vigorous or lacking, discuss your routine with your doctor who can guide you on the right path for you and your bump.” Amanda Hayward is editor of this magazine and a mom of two.

BABY MILESTONES

10 Most Significant Things to Watch Out for in Baby’s Development, According to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

1.

3.

(6 - 8 weeks) This first milestone lets you know that your infant’s on track.

(8 weeks) Sweet little sounds like “ooh” and “ahh” start happening spontaneously.

2.

4.

(6 - 8 weeks) Not to be confused with a smile related to digestive gas, a genuine smile happens in response to someone else’s smile.

(3 - 4 months) Cooing expands when Baby starts to use his tongue. At 6 - 8 months, Baby will start babbling back to you.

EYE CONTACT

SMILE

COOING

BABBLING

5.

REACHING & GRABBING (5 - 7 months) Using hands and arms, Baby shows an interest in touching and holding. Create opportunities for this.

6.

ROLLING OVER (5+ months) Baby can lift his head, push up on his arms and try rocking. Using his head and arms in a “mini” pushup, he will amaze you when he flips from front to back.

7.

9.

(5+ months) Sitting for a few minutes without support comes next (once there’s total head control).

(9+ months) All of the sudden your baby has the muscle development he needs to pull himself up to a standing position. Big boy!

SITTING UP

8.

CRAWLING (7 - 10 months) Babies have different styles in this department, scooting on the bottom or pushing off on the tummy by the knees.

PULLING UP

10.

WALKING (9 - 15 months) Your baby will sit, roll over and crawl before moving from pulling up to walking. Once a baby progresses to walking, well, welcome to independence!

NOTE: Babies vary on exact milestone timelines. If you have any concerns about your baby’s development, consult with your pediatrician. 22
