BIRTHDAYS: What’s Hot & What’s Not

onestly, your 1-year-old could’nt give a hoot about all the balloons you’re blowing up. She doesn’t care about all the presents you’re wrapping and attempting to pile on her high chair tray and the table covered with carefully crafted treats. In fact, Mommy’s acting kind of funny. Why is

Mommy so frantic? Let’s face it. Birthdays have a way of making us outdo ourselves. Once your child starts preschool or elementary school, the birthdays start coming on a regular rotation. Some moms are really, really good at putting them together, others get sort of panicky. The panicky mom will plop down hundreds so someone else will do the party for her at a destination of her choosing. The easy-doesit mom will have a home party and go about doing things herself without much fuss. But we all have a hard time keeping things simple. We think ‘people are coming over,’ and we start going nuts with the cleaning, the planning, the decorating. If we’re having an away-from-home party, we watch with eagle eyes to make sure the party hosts are doing things right. But the kids don’t care about all that, only YOU do. All that your child wants for her birthday is to have a good time with her friends and for her friends to have a good time. That’s it: A good time had by all. And yes, please, birthday cake and ice cream. OK, I may be a birthday purist, but I’ve seen moms and dads drop hundreds on big birthday bashes that found kids in tears before the end. I’ve seen kids rip into carefully packed goody bags, making mincemeat out of them on their way out the door. I’ve seen live pony rides with scared riders and backyard carnivals where boredom reigned, sleepovers in fancy hotel rooms and extravagant limousine rides where little girls dressed to the nines munched on cheese and crackers washed down with Kool-Aid. That’s a huge tab right there. What’s hot? Keeping your child’s birthday simple and carrying on calmly. IT IS NOT A BIG DEAL. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO COST MUCH. What’s NOT hot? Making a big, stressful deal out of ANYTHING. As your child grows up, you will acccompany her to countless soirees and host a share of your own. Chill out about birthdays and the parties will happily fly by one by one. Get wigged out about them and that’s what you’ll remember one day: that you hated them, didn’t like planning them, couldn’t wait for them to be over. Is that what you REALLY want? (Shake your head here). I didn’t think so!

GONE FISHIN’ GREAT TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME FISHING OUTINGS

ishing is a fantastic hobby for all ages, but it can be especially valuable for youngsters. It not only gives them something positive and constructive to do with their time, it helps to get them out of the house and exposes them to fresh air and sunshine. Use these tips to help spark a love of fishing!

1. PROVIDE GOOD EQUIPMENT. Many parents set their children up for failure by letting them use hand-me-down rods and reels, which are too large for their frame and too complicated for their inexperienced minds. Instead, purchase your child an entry-level spinning reel and rod in the 5- to 6-foot-long range.

2. TAKE THEM TO A GOOD LOCATION. Choose a place that has a healthy fish population and provides plenty of room while kids learn

to cast. Avoid crowded banks and places with overhanging trees when they are first starting. Consider a weekend or day trip to Acton Lake in Hueston Woods State Park, Clark Lake in Clark County, and Lake Loramie at Lake Loramie State Park (which is one of the best catfish lakes around). If you want to stay closer to home, visit greatparks. org/recreation/fishing and cincinatiparks.com for local fishing spots, along with kentoncounty. org or campbellcountyky.org in Northern Kentucky. Teach kids to cast in places that are likely to hold fish, such as near docks, around vegetation or downed trees and near places where the depth changes drastically.

3. TARGET KID-FRIENDLY FISH. Youngsters and inexperienced anglers will have a better chance of success if they target easy-tocatch species, like bluegill and

catfish (including bullhead). These fish tend to be bold, aggressive feeders, which means your kids will get tons of nibbles.

4. USE GOOD BAITS. Artificial lures may be the first choice for experienced anglers, but inexperienced anglers often find them difficult to control. Instead, set your children up with real or live bait, such as worms, crickets, leeches, dough balls or corn kernels if you are fishing for bluegill, but try to use hot dog slices, worms or shrimp if you are fishing for catfish. Attach a float about one to two feet above the hook if you are fishing for bluegill or use a sinker if you are trying to catch catfish.

5. FISH ALONGSIDE YOUR KIDS. Even though you’ll be busy baiting hooks, untangling lines and providing pointers, keep your own fishing line in the water.

When you get a nibble, set the hook well and pass the rod off to your youngster. This way, he or she will get to enjoy all the glory! Don’t forget to follow all state laws and local regulations during your fishing trip — you don’t want an unpleasant experience with law enforcement to sour the experience. Why reading aloud with your kids is HEALTHY!

id you know that snuggling up for storytime is great for your child’s growing brain? Research show when parents read to their children a difference shows up in the child’s brain and behavior. Hello summer reading!

IMPROVING BEHAVIOR A recent study published by the AAP found that programs promoting what researchers called “positive parent interaction” — like reading aloud with your children — had a positive effect on disruptive behavior like aggression or hyperactivity. So what’s happening in your child’s brain when you read aloud to her? “There are social, emotional and cognitive benefits when a parent spends time reading aloud with their child,” says Suzy Smyth, kindergarten and first grade reading intervention specialist at Cincinnati Country Day School. “There are many cognitive benefits to reading with your child including language

development, vocabulary development, pre-literacy skills, critical thinking and more.” Reading with your child can also help improve his “social cognition,”i.e., thinking about others. And reading aloud makes kid brains active. Researchers from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital conducted a 2016 study that showed when young children are being told a story a number of regions in the left part of their brains become active. The evidence is clear that pairing YOU with your child for reading is far superior to just planting your child down with her iPad.

ENGAGE YOUR CHILD

Smyth has plenty of ideas on how to make reading a fun and engaging activity for your child. First, let your child choose her books. Research shows kids will stay engaged in things that interest them. But don’t just limit reading to books: look to magazines, signs, anything you can get your hands on and read away. Smyth says take turn reading pages, change your voice for different characters and even

change locations from time to time to show that reading can happen anywhere, anytime. Smyth also suggests if you’re reading a book about an animal, for instance, you pair that with an outing to the zoo. “Finding connections in your child’s world to the book expands their knowledge and experiences in general,” Smyth says.

FINDING TIME

You don’t have to limit yourself to bedtime stories for opportunities to read aloud together. “Finding meaningful and natural opportunities to read is key,” says Smyth. “If you are taking a trip somewhere, include your child in simple research about a particular location and related activities,” she says. There are plenty of benefits to both parents and kids who take time each day to read together. For one, it’s one of the most pleasurable activities you can do with your child — to snuggle up, enjoy a story, laugh and experience emotions together. This summer, aim to do a lot of outloud reading together by

PARTYTIME: THEMES DR. SEUSS’ “OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!” BIRTHDAY PARTY Get back to the books with the classic SEUSS BIRTHDAY PARTY. Here’s what you need to bring this story to life: • Frame the book sleeve of a Seuss book for decor. Let guests sign the book. • Choose colored balloons to match the colors of the book and tether them to the book signing table and other places. • Paint mason jars or other containers like the stripes used in the book. • Make a tiered cake the same as the jars with the colorful stripes. Use black icing to fill in the gaps between the stripes and give it a drawn look. • Cut your child’s name out of colored paper that matches the colors of the theme, too. • For a table centerpiece, stick a bunch of twigs in a jar. Print out lots of balloons from the story to cut out and hang on the twigs.

DINO-RIFFIC They’re coming out of extinction with the return of Jurassic World. Here’s how you can do a DINOSAUR PARTY: • Make a simple layered cake and stack some cool (new) dinosaur toys on top and maybe use some small fake greenery, too. • Plan ahead and find white Easter eggs to save for the party to put tiny dinos in and hide around the yard for a hunt. • Fill a kiddie pool up with sand and hide lots of toy dinosaurs inside. PARTYTIME: EXTRAS FUN WITH POOL NOODLES Pool noodles are cheap and versatile. Play games like ring toss, or set up an obstacle course, but one of our favorites is field hockey, courtesy of Disney Family (family. disney.com). You’ll need: • Balloons (with several to spare in case of popping) • Two baskets or boxes • Pool noodles (one for each player) Set a basket or box at each end of the yard, and divide your group into two teams, giving each player a pool noodle. Place your balloons in the middle and at the whistle, challenge the children to push or hit the balloons with their noodles into the opposing team’s basket until no balloons are free of the boxes or baskets. Whichever team has moved the most balloons into the box is the winner!
