want to begin by introducing myself: I am a mom of two beautiful, curious, energetic children, William and Evelyn. I am also a Cincinnati-an, a military wife and if you don’t see me cooking up healthy vegetarian recipes in my kitchen, you might see me training for a marathon while running around beautiful local trails like Loveland Bike Trail, Voice of America Park or across the Purple People Bridge connecting Cincinnati and Newport. Actually, you might just find me running around my neighborhood, because finding the time to run anywhere far away from home has ALMOST been impossible with two kiddos. That being said, I know that some of us are in the same boat: juggling life, children, work, hobbies, free time, you name it. That is one reason why I am more than excited to be a part of such a fantastic publication that reaches out to local families. We are all in it together. Life is hard, but it also has its rewards. And from a mommy’s standpoint — children are truly our greatest distraction. Kids fill our days with questions like, “Why do zebras have stripes?” or, “Where do babies come from?” or, “How far away is the moon?” They keep us thinking and guessing all day long. When times get tough and we feel like we are not doing a good job, we have to remember that we are doing the best we can, and that’s what counts. It’s easy to miss a major milestone (I can be with my kids all day long, but the one time I’m not there, the first step is taken — go figure), or order pizza three days in a row because there’s no time to cook. None of this makes us bad parents. We are each only one person. We are not perfect, but our children think we are. We can listen to our children’s ideas, guide them, hug them, and be there with them every step life gives us. My little boy asked me once if he could someday go to the moon. And what did I say? YES! Of course you can! No one said this parenting thing would be easy, but I’m pretty sure they said it would be a fun ride. September is here and so is a new school year, which means we have to help our children with their back-to-school jitters while handling our own, and we need to help them prepare the best we can. We need to take the time to listen to what they’re learning at school, meet with their teachers, sign them up for their favorite after-school activity and set aside that special family time. We need to encourage their reading, going for walks and making a point to sit at the dinner table together. Moving forward, I’m thrilled to learn and connect with all of you Cincinnati and Kentucky families out there. We all have so many questions; I am here with you on this wonderful, tough and neverending journey to help you find answers and to share my stories ... and your stories, too!

LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK A new children’s book, Little Otter Learns to Swim, comes out this month from local author Artie Knapp. His book, published by Ohio University Press and illustrated by wildlife artist Guy Hobbs, is about Little Otter learning to swim, dive and play in her natural habitat before setting out to explore the world on her own. EASING BACK-TOSCHOOL ANXIETY Anxiety is one thing, overcoming it is another. Here’s help for batting back your child’s back-to-school jitters.

ou can get anxious about a new school year, but what about your child? Meeting new friends and teachers while trying to prepare his little mind for the upcoming year can sometimes become a little overwhelming. No matter what, let him know he’s not alone. Anxiety is something that many kids face day to day. It can be dealt with in a natural manner, and the good news is, it can be reversed with tender, loving care. Lynne Merk, Ph.D., a psychologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology, says there are ways a parent and child can handle anxiety together. “Help children see anxiety as a natural part of life,” says Merk. “We all feel anxious sometimes, but there are things we can do to feel better. Ask your child what

he thinks would help him feel better. Share with him things you do to calm yourself when you’re anxious,” Merk adds. Evidence suggests that anxiety is genetic, Merk says, so some of us may be more prone to it than others. However, building a proper routine and lifestyle can help ease anxiety that some of us experience in our everyday lives. “There are environmental factors that can contribute such as experiencing significant conflict in daily life, not having daily needs met, facing significant change, being overscheduled, etc.,” says Merk. “In busy families, children often feel rushed, and this can also heighten their anxiety,” she says.

IDENTIFYING ANXIETY Each child is unique. Your child has his own way of expressing stress and you can help him identify that and let him know it’s OK. “Many children just tell their parents they’re feeling

nervous about school starting back, but other children are not as up-front,” says Merk. “Young children exhibit anxiety in different ways — increased irritability, complaints of physical symptoms (like headache or stomachache) and changes in sleeping or eating patterns.” School avoidance is often another sign of anxiety. “If a child’s anxiety is especially frequent, intense and is impairing functioning,” Merk continues, “that may be a sign to seek help from a therapist.” Other ways you can ease your child’s nervousness is to show him that he has control over his anxiety using calming techniques. This can be done by simply going for a walk, listening to soft music, giving him time to relax in between school, sports and homework, and applauding him for sharing new ideas or trying new things. TO CALM KID STRESS 3WAYS 1. ACKNOWLEDGE THE ANXIETY AND NORMALIZE IT. This can be done by telling your child about the anxieties you may have as a parent. Listen to him and help him to understand what makes him anxious and why. 2. ARRANGE A VISIT WITH YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER. Visiting the school and your child’s teacher is a great way to get acquainted. Keep it light and friendly and from there, you and your student can work forward together. 3. PLAN AND FOLLOW ROUTINES. Come up with a realistic plan for your child and family that includes a balance of school, activities and relaxation time. Imagine This: You accompany your kids to a casual play date with the kids next door. The mom turns to you and says, “So, I’ve decided I’m going to homeschool!” You say, “Wow that’s great!” At that moment, so many questions pop into your head: “Why?” or, “Should I do that, too?” Homeschooling has become so popular lately, it’s hard not to wonder if you should jump on the bandwagon. The internet has made it easier to access curriculum and connect with other homeschoolers, and there are many homeschooling communities in various cities. Besides, research suggests homeschooled children tend to do better on standardized tests, stick around longer in college and do better once they’re enrolled. In both content and style, it’s all about personalization. Belinda Boone, mom of four, has been homeschooling her kids for four years now and describes it as very rewarding. “I love being able to teach my kids the curriculum I choose, and I get to have conversations with them during the day that

I wouldn’t,” Boone says. “Cincinnati has such a huge homeschool following now, and there are many options for extra programs. Curriculums lay out lesson plans so easily that anyone can follow them. But how do you know if homeschooling is right for your family? It comes down to personal preference, Boone says. So far it has been a plus for her family’s lifestyle. “I only have my experience to pull from, but I’ve loved the relationship I’ve formed with my kids as their primary teacher,” says Boone. “I can work at their pace, and take my time on subjects they may be struggling with.” And those nagging doubts about whether you should or not? They’re normal and a part of it all. Just remember this: you have been your child’s teacher from day one, so you’re already a huge part of his education.

HOMESCHOOL NUTSHELL Requirements vary state-to-state when it comes to homeschooling. According to Brittany Halpin, deputy director of the Office of Communications & Outreach for the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio requires homeschool

students to have a minimum of 900 hours of instruction per school term in language arts, geography, math, science, physical education, fine arts, first aid and safety and fire prevention. In Kentucky, it’s a minimum of 1,062 instructional hours covering similar subjects. So, where can a parent begin? First, to be a homeschooling parent in Ohio you must have one of the following: • A high school diploma • A certificate of high school equivalence • Standardized test scores that demonstrate high school equivalence • Another equivalent credential found appropriate by your district superintendent In Kentucky, any parent can homeschool their child, there are no educational requirements. Next? Dig into resources — they are plentiful! “There are a wide variety of resources available to parents selecting curriculums and instructional materials,” says Halpin. “Start with your local school district. Review curriculum and pacing guides on district websites. State and national homeschool associations are also a good source for materials and recommendations,” she adds.

One of the best sources though will be other homeschooling parents. Get yourself connected to a local group, then it’s as simple as grabbing a cup of coffee with another homeschooling parent.

PROS & CONS OF HOMESCHOOLING

Of course, all children are different and what works for one may not work for the other — but isn’t that one of the reasons that draws you to homeschooling to begin with? Often schools don’t have the time or manpower to reach all children and their different learning styles. “Every child is unique,” says Halpin. “Parents interested in homeschooling are generally looking for the option that allows them to customize their child’s education.” The only caveat being that homeschooling is a significant commitment. When you sit down with your family to try and come to a homeschooling or not decision, weigh the pros and cons. Pros: • Educational freedom • Day to day flexibility and control • Knowing your child better • No busywork Cons: • Personal time restraints • Seeking out social situations for your kids • Feeling “out of the loop” with local kids in public or private schools According to Rebecca Kochenderfer, founder of homeschool.com, there are pros and cons no matter which way you go. “With homeschooling, we a have the freedom to educate as we see fit, on a schedule that fits our family, and we have time to explore hobbies and pursuits that would be difficult for the typical schooled student,” Kochenderfer says. “Homeschooling offers the ability to tailor fit a child’s education to his specific needs. A few cons may include the parent feeling burnt out at times and the fact that some parents don’t feel qualified to teach some subjects.” Again, homeschooling your children is all about personal preferences, resources and time. Use your discretion, and do what works best for your family. Include your kids in the homeschool decision making process and they will partner with you willingly, knowing that a decision was made as a team.
