ommy, it’s Halloween time!” said my 2-and-a-half-year-old as we stood in middle of Michael’s craft store, jaws dropped to the floor. “I guess it is!” I said. Then I thought, “Is it really almost fall? When did that happen?” It was only August. It seems as though holidays come sooner every year. Retailers lay out autumn items as soon as summer starts to drift away. It makes us feel rushed, as if we have to quickly run up in the attic and frantically grab all of last year’s decorative pumpkins and scarecrows. Once we decorate the front porch and start putting together our Halloween costumes, we then realize, we are way ahead of the game. Well, the sooner the better, right? I talked to a very positive person once who said it is great to decorate early. Why? Because you have more time to enjoy the season. Ok, well put. Agreed. As long as you keep it simple. Trust me, I am very guilty of jumping on Pinterest and suddenly becoming very crafty with the goal in mind to make all four of my family members costumes and save tons of money. Then, I decide I want to make 5 million fall crafts with my kids and see how many pumpkin patches we can make it to in one week. Taking a step back, I realize, maybe more isn’t better. It’s creating meaningful, simple moments you can actually enjoy and remember. Kids are easy to please. I mean, what did we do in the 80s? Not all of that. I remember my mom going through her closet and finding some old costumes that I would use to dress up for my school’s Halloween party. Next up was trick-ortreating, carving pumpkins and enjoying the company of family and friends. As we embrace the fall season, really take some time to enjoy your little goblins as they get excited for the carving, decorating and costume planning. It’s sometimes difficult to enjoy these special times in the season when we get wrapped up in too many festivities or try and keep up with everyone else. Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of activities to get into this fall that are well worth it. I truly look forward to an adventurous hayride and corn maze and so do my kids. It’s about planning ahead and keeping it simple so the kids can really find the enjoyment of it. Take a weekend family fall getaway to reorganize your life, go to a pumpkin patch, carve some pumpkins, keep your children’s costumes simple and fun, and make this fall one to remember.

UNDERSTANDING SENSORY-FRIENDLY This spooky month can be intimidating for little ones, sensory sensitive or not. Sensory activities are good to do anytime. Keep them gentle!

tchy costumes, crowded streets and a loud atmosphere can make your little one’s Halloween not so trick-or-treaty, especially if they are sensory-sensitive.

However, there are ways to make this spooky holiday more comfortable this year for you and your little goblins.

ABOUT SENSORY ACTIVITIES Sensory activities — anything that involves the five senses — can have a positive impact on your little bundle of joy from day one. The earlier you introduce them, the better. Singing songs, ooeygooey playdough, bubbles or a homemade messfree sensory bin with kinetic sand are ideal for building your baby’s motor skills. “It gives children a greater awareness,” says Holly Young, owner of Puzzle Pieces in Cincinnati, a store specializing in sensory toys for special needs and autism. “Children absorb things around them, and it desensitizes things as they grow.” While sensory activities stimulate one or more of the five senses, they also encourage motor development, Young says. And the options are endless, allowing babies and children to explore the big world around them through touch, sound and more. And sensory activities are good for both typical and atypical sensory-sensitive children; the way you engage in sensory play with them is the same. “The way that babies learn is the way atypical children learn, so back to ground zero,” says Young. “It’s about restructuring the way they think and the way they play.”

SENSORY DISORDERS Sensory disorders come in many shapes and sizes, and sometimes it can be difficult to grasp. Some children with autism or ADHD are sensory sensitive; others struggle with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) or sensory integration dysfunction, causing them to be over or under sensitive to one or more of the five senses. For example, they may have little reaction to pain, uncontrolled body movements, or may be overwhelmed by sounds. Sarah Lyons, mom of four, says her daughter was diagnosed with SPD as a toddler. Looking back, Lyons says her child may have had SPD even earlier. “I can think back to many issues she had as a baby that were related to SPD,” Lyons says. “She refused to bare weight on her legs, but instead wanted them curled up to her body; she had physical therapy to work on this at 11 months old.” Baby’s and toddlers with SPD or who are sensory sensitive can improve their sensory tolerance over the years with physical therapy and sensory activities with caregivers. Lyons found ways to help her little girl improve through physical activity and music. “Providing her with physical activity helps

Halloween can be a difficult time for sensory-sensitive children. Here are three simple ways to make this month more tolerable:

1. SEEK OUT SENSORYFRIENDLY TRICK-ORTREATING. Go to places that are quiet with less lights and not as spooky as other sites. Some churches, malls or shopping centers hold free Halloween events for families who don’t want to go trick-or-treating. Puzzle Pieces holds a free event prior to Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Fun includes door prizes, kidfriendly crafting and candy handouts. The sensory room will be open. Pin on a cute flower, add a simple prop, or let them go out in their most comfy pajamas.

We spoke with a safety expert to give you some 4-1-1 on car seat safety. We even gathered up a list of places that offer free car seat safety inspections so you and your family will be ready to hit the road in no time.

until at least age 2. Child passenger safety laws here require children under age 4 or 40 pounds to use a child safety seat and children younger than age 8 to use a booster seat as long as they’re shorter than 4’ 9” tall. In addition, children ages 8 - 15 are required to use either a child safety seat or a safety belt. It’s recommended that children ride rear-facing as long as possible, until the height or weight limits of the car seat are maxed out, which is in line with the American Academy of Pediatric’s current recommendations.

Q: What are important car seat safety laws for parents to keep in mind when purchasing a car seat?

Q: With all of the different car seats out there, the choices seem endless. How can a parent break down what car seat is best for them and their baby?

Federal law requires all children under age 4 to be properly secured in a child restraint system; children under the age of 8, unless they are taller than 4’ 9”. While it is not a law in Ohio, many states now require children to ride rear-facing 14

different car seat paths that can be taken. Some parents may opt for an infant car seat then transition to a convertible car seat, which has rear- and forward-facing modes, while others may go directly to a convertible car seat in the rear-facing position when the baby is born. Newer car seat innovations allow children to ride rear-facing longer. Q: Is it safe for my child to be rear-facing even if his legs look cramped?

If your child is big for his age or has particularly long legs, consider purchasing a car seat that offers extended leg room so you can keep him rear-facing as long as possible. In a 2018 study, Chicco found that many parents worry about their child’s legs touching the vehicle seat or looking cramped when they’re rear-facing. Contrary to popular belief, this is NOT a sign that your little one is ready to ride

forward-facing. Staying rear-facing longer ensures your child’s head and neck are protected in the event of a collision, which is much more important than protecting their arms and legs. Kids are much more flexible compared to adults and although we might think they look uncomfortable with their legs crossed or against the seat, they’re just fine — and more importantly, they’re safe. Q: How can parents be sure their car seat has not expired?

Most car seats last for at least six years, but expiration dates vary by manufacturer. The date is often printed on the seat itself, but if not, you can check the instruction manual or contact the manufacturer’s customer service department. Car seats expire for a few different, equally important reasons. First, over time, car seat technology improves and safety standards change. Additionally, materials used in car seats wear down with extended use, which can compromise safety features down the road. It’s also important to note that car seat manufacturers stop safety testing seats after a certain period of time, meaning that past expiration, manufacturers cannot guarantee how a car seat will perform in an accident. Q: How can parents ensure their car seat is safe and safely installed in the car?

It’s always a good idea to have the car seat inspected at a car seat check. They are generally offered by police, fire stations and local hospitals. At a car seat check they will teach you how to install your car seat. Parents and caregivers should always follow the car seat manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation and use. We have seen so many advancements, such as LATCH and ReclineSure technologies and bubble level indicators, that make it easier to know whether your child’s car seat is properly secured and positioned in both the rear- and forward-facing positions.

No road trip with a little one is perfect, but make it more enjoyable with a little preplanning and prep. 1. Check that your car seat is safe and snug (get it checked out at a car seat safety location; see page 15).

By Barbara David own, down, down the stairs, then across a series of boardwalk bridges and over deep green foliage toward our destination. We heard it before we saw it: the pounding water of Hayden Falls. It’s a gorgeous waterfall, and the day we visited, a glamorous woman was using it as a backdrop for a photoshoot. We took a selfie, and then a leisurely stroll back to save energy for going back up all those stairs. Our slow pace allowed us to enjoy the stream below and a family of ducks out for their morning swim. Located in Dublin, Ohio, Hayden Falls is one of four waterfalls featured in the city’s waterfall tour. For the sake of time, we only visited one other location, Indian Run Falls. For those willing to wade in the water, Indian Falls provides not only spectacle, but also spectacular fun. We watched as kids in swimsuits splashed, rock-hopped, and hunted for fossils. In addition to natural beauty, Dublin offers a cell phone tour of Art in Public Places. Call the number or scan the QR code to learn about the artist and inspiration for more than 20 art installations across the city. Soccer players will enjoy seeing “Out of Bounds,” baseball lovers will like “Going, Going, Gone” and everyone will like “Field of Corn.” In fact, as we drove past the field, we couldn’t resist finding a place to park and exploring row after row of gigantic,

Additionally, it was interesting to call 1-614-763-3102 (the number listed in the brochure, and on the website) and discover that the art commemorates the area’s farming heritage and pays tribute to the land’s former use as a cornfield. Downtown Dublin features more of the city’s tributes. The Fairy Door Trail pays homage to Dublin’s Irish heritage. The fun starts at the Visitor and Information Center, where kids (and adults) pick up their Fairy Door Passport. Once they find the fairy door there, they write the fairy’s name on the passport and head to the next downtown Dublin business on the tour. Participants who find all seven doors win a free T-shirt. During our hunt, we enjoyed seeing the many buildings on the historic registry and especially loved our stop at Winan’s Fine Chocolates. We found the fairy door amid their specialty coffees, decadent baked goods, and delicious chocolates. I ordered a strawberry smoothie and risked a brainfreeze headache time and again with each delicious sip.
