The Tea Leaves Have Been Read ...

D

id you hear the one about the leading child psychologist who said giving a young child an iPad is “tantamount to child abuse?” Oh, come on, you think. Please. Get with it. We’re ALL addicted now and we LIKE our addictions ... but do we? There

are times when I want to go completely off grid, hide somewhere in a cabin in the woods and just play Monopoly. But I’d get fidgety, for sure. I’d start to panic. I need to get in touch with someone! Someone needs to get in touch with me! Time to get a grip. But then Toys “R” Us filed for bankruptcy. Well, you probably saw it coming. The toy store felt grave yardy. It’s true that once a child reaches the age of video games and technology, toys don’t fascinate them so much. What’s sad is little kids are being given phones and iPads at earlier ages. So toys don’t matter so much when a child is young anymore. Is that healthy? Is it healthy to hop from one screen to the next and be fidgety when you can’t have a device in your hand? Our kids ride in cars with TV screens, watch TV, binge watch Netflix, play games on iPads, share pics on Instagram and Snapchat ... I sound like a big wet blanket, right?

Just two words of caution here: Judge not. Don’t judge me for being a mom who likes to bake cookies and play board games. Don’t judge me for wanting my little kids to know the joy of playing house or “restaurant” or anything else their imaginations can dream up. Don’t judge me because I’m not as hip

or savvy as you may be to the world of apps and pop culture’s incessant demand that you own the latest and greatest. I’m happy sitting on the beach with a book — as long as my kids are splashing in the ocean. And for the record: I hate seeing people on vacation doing business on their phones on the beach. You can always tell them apart from the vacationers. They’re the ones who just can’t disconnect. I feel sorry for them. I mean, get a life.

BOY SCOUTS NOW TAKING GIRL MEMBERS READERS RESPOND Girl Scouts Have Programs in Place Already!

Boys Scouts is for Boys. Girls Scouts is for Girls.

The Girl Scouts have these programs already in place, though I don’t know if troop locations are an issue in this decision. I worked up to the Marian Award through Girl Scouts. I guess I just don’t understand the need for girls to become Boy Scouts.

Boy Scouts are for boys, Girl Scouts are for girls. I was a girl scout when I was a kid. I don’t think I would be comfortable with boys being at my overnight camping, sleepovers, trips, etc. The same would be for a young boy in that same situation. Especially these days when you look at someone wrong and it’s sexual harassment.

Joan Doyle

Leave Boy Scouts As Is! My son is an Eagle Scout and I am 100 percent against it. Let them continue to join Ventures and Explorers but keep them out of Boy Scouts, let them stay in Girl Scouts and revamp the program if need be. Christy Stabler

Why Not? If girls want the education and experience of the Boy Scouts, why not? I’d say the same if a young man would want to join the Girl Scouts. We can’t keep our girls from wanting to learn and do what these guys are doing. There’s a big difference in what they offer, so I say let them in the Boy Scouts, playing football, etc.

I would think letting girls in Boy Scouts would be more of a threat for American Heritage Girls since they came about since Girl Scouts was not religious and they wanted a religious group for the girls. In any case, whatever your experience with any of these groups is only as good as the leaders you end up with. PREPARE FOR A PREEMIE

RAISING AWARENESS WORLD PREMATURITY DAY is Friday, Nov. 17

You’ve been told you’re at risk for premature delivery. Here’s what you need to know. By Sherry Hang

W

hile most parents are eager for their new baby’s arrival, they’re not so eager for the day to come too soon! Preterm births though — defined by the March of Dimes as births that happen before 37 weeks of pregnancy — are very common. The March of Dimes says approximately 380,000 babies are born early in the U.S. According to Dr. Mamata Narendran of Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates in Fairfield and Liberty Township, the cause behind over one-third of preterm births is unknown. However, she does point to some known risk factors, including: • A maternal age of less than 20 or older than 40 years • Poor nutrition • Lower socioeconomic status • Stress • Use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs • History of preterm delivery • Pregnancies with more than one fetus (twins or triplets) • Problems with shape of uterus

12

November 2017

• A weak cervix • Infections in the genital tract • Bleeding in pregnancy • Recent delivery (less than a year) • Limited prenatal care “Certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes can also lead to premature delivery,” she says.

WHAT TO DO? What can you do when you learn your baby may come prematurely? “Once you are pregnant, establish prenatal care as soon as possible,” Narendran says. “Follow recommendations, keep moving and remain stress free. Next, educate yourself about the symptoms of preterm labor such as contractions or cramps, pressure in the pelvis, mucus like vaginal discharge with or without blood. In short, ‘listen to your body’ and call your doctor if you are concerned,” she adds. Your doctor may recommend certain additional interventions depending on your situation such as weekly progesterone injections,

baby aspirin, limiting weight gain or bed rest.

COMING HOME “When your bundle of joy arrives earlier than planned, it is normal to worry, and feel overwhelmed and underprepared,” says Narendran. But there are steps you can take to alleviate your concerns. Narendran suggests pumping breast milk as soon as you can (if you intend to breastfeed), and to make sure your car seat is appropriate for a preemie. Some pediatricians are more familiar with the unique needs of a premature baby than others, so that’s something you may want to follow through on. Preemies can have life-long health issues, depending upon their condition at birth. For this reason, you will want to minimize allergens, light and noise at home. Keeping your infant comfortably warm will help him adapt to his new home. “ Most importantly,” adds Narendran, “adjust your expectations, relax, and enjoy the baby.”

“Where Every Family Matters.”

World Prematurity Day aims to raise awareness on the effects of premature birth, both on babies and their families. Learn how you can get involved in raising awareness at the World Prematurity Facebook page @ WorldPrematurityDay. __________________ NEW RESEARCH: 6 GENES LINKED WITH PRETERM BIRTHS

Just two months ago, new research lead by Louis Muglia, M.D., at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center resulted in promising findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine: Researchers found six mutations in six genes that affect whether a woman is likely to have a preterm baby. The findings, from a large international team used data from 43,5000 European women, may lead to ways to test women and possibly intervene to help keep a developing baby safe in the womb for as long as possible.

Our nine magnet school programs offer choices that fit different interests and learning styles. From Montessori and Paideia to foreign language, STEM and the arts, we have the perfect program to get your child started on a path toward academic and lifelong success. Thank You!

Cultivating Gratitude in Children By Heather Lee Leap

K

It’s easy for kids take what they have for granted. That’s why it’s good to “center” their hearts at home.

ids learn through modeling and repetition, and gratitude is no exception. The more often your children see or hear you showing thanks, the more seeds you plant in their garden of appreciation. In their book, Making Grateful Kids: The Science of Building Character, Jeffrey J. Froh and Giacomo Bono note that young children first practice thankfulness as politeness, rather than genuine gratitude, which comes when they are old enough to appreciate why others are offering them kindness. The words please and thank you are building blocks of gratitude and for many of us they come easily when our children are learning to talk. If your kids are a bit older though, take a day to observe your interactions, not just with your children, but with everyone you speak with. How often do you use the “magic words?” Looking for more ways to instill an attitude of gratitude in your little ones? Here are a few to consider.

ROSES AND THORNS Sometimes called simply “Highs and Lows,” this is a practice of each participant sharing one positive thing and one negative thing that happened during the day. Consider offering roses last to end on a positive note, or up your gratitude game by taking time as a family to consider what good may have come from the “thorns.” Don’t forget to express thanks for the people with whom you can share these highs and lows.

hoped. These types of downward comparisons encourage empathy. With that empathy, comes greater appreciation for the things we have. Kids also begin to see that everyone has a different perspective, and that their circumstances could spark envy in others.

BASKET OF THANKS Keep a basket or other container in a prominent place in your home, along with index cards and pens or colored pencils. Encourage family members to stop by and write a quick note of thanks for people, pets and things in your home throughout the day.

THANK YOU CARDS Writing thank you notes cultivates thoughtfulness and gratitude, and can become a regular habit. Author and mom Sage Cohen writes and sends thank you cards daily. “My son is very aware of my gratitude practice,” she says. “In my household, writing thank you notes is like brushing your teeth, going to bed on time, and being gentle with the cats. It’s both modeled and required, but in a friendly and integrated way. It’s just a rhythm of life that we co-create and enjoy together.” Rather than an occasional obligation, thank you notes can be an opportunity for family members to talk regularly about what and who they appreciate, as well as a time to consider what our words of thanks mean to the recipient.

GRATITUDE JOURNAL

FIVE PENNIES … OR BEADS OR SMALL STONES

Help your children keep a daily list of people and things for which they are grateful. Spending time to write or draw things we appreciate focuses our attention on them in a way that can magnify their value. Entries can be a simple drawing or more detailed written entries such as “I am thankful for… because…” As a parent, in any season, you can plant seeds of appreciation and watch gratitude grow in your life, and in the lives of your children.

Have your child think of five things he or she is grateful for and allow each small treasure to represent one of those things. Keep them in a special spot or precious container, or take them to school in a pocket as a reminder throughout the day.

DOWNWARD SOCIAL COMPARISONS Rather than lamenting how everyone else has it better than we do, an upward comparison that can breed dissatisfaction, Froh and Bono suggest we bring our attention, and that of our children, toward friends and family whose plans haven’t worked out as they’d

Writer and mother Heather Lee Leap is thankful for her family, her friends, hoola hoops and chocolate, among other things. Find her at wellnessandwords.com.
