don’t know if it’s the smell of cinnamon or that initial taste of a milky hot chocolate. Maybe it’s the comfort of dressing up in tons of warm layers and curling up on the couch with your kids. It’s the time of the year where we’re supposed to slow down and take in these special moments. There is just something about the holidays. I look back at holiday memories with my parents and siblings, and it reminds me to continue creating happy moments with my kids. Some memories are funny, some crazy, some bitter sweet. I remember one Christmas where I really wanted a guitar. I asked Santa every night for that guitar and had my hopes high. Christmas morning, I woke up and saw that guitar-shaped gift in the corner, hoping it had my name on it. It didn’t. Turns out, my brother wanted the same thing. Santa thought I wanted a nice TV with a built-in VCR. The thankful child I was, I smiled and didn’t show disappointment. My brother opened up the gift of a beautiful wooden acoustic guitar. Once Christmas morning was over, I hid in my room crying. My brother, being the kind older brother he was, offered me a trade. Guitar for the TV. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse. The kind act of giving is better than any gift. It feels so good to give something rather than to take, and it doesn’t have to be big. It’s that kind gesture that radiates a warm feeling to everyone around you. It’s the little things that matter whether we realize it or not. We scurry around each year trying to find the perfect gifts for our kids and family. We finally sit down and watch the ear-to-ear smiles and giddy excitement as they excitedly open gifts. During this tiny moment, everyone is relaxing, having a hot cup of coffee and enjoying this peace after all of the shopping, cooking and rushing. Although not every holiday is perfect and sometimes sickness or family arguments get in the way, it’s those quick, special moments we have to hold onto. Think about the gift of giving this month. Your simple gestures can provide a meal or a cozy winter coat to a family in need. Many light shows, restaurants, grocery stores and theatre shows are giving back this season with your help, too. Take your family to see a light show and you just might be helping a family in need. It’s the season of giving, and my goal is to do more of that. Less running, more giving; less chaos, more family time. Slow down this season and enjoy those special moments and make memories with your family!

Your family can organize a pet food drive to help feed the furry friends from your neighborhood vet office. IS YOUR CHILD A BOOKWORM? If your family is full of book lovers, the library is the perfect place to volunteer. Teens can help with children’s programs, with shelving books and more. HELP PACK FOOD Local soup kitchens and food distribution centers, including Freestore Foodbank, are always in need of volunteers. At the Freestore Foodbank, children (ages 13 and older; any child under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult) can help sort, package and shelve food for local families in need. Keep your immunity up, wash your hands, cough into your arm!

arolers, laughter, family gatherings and … germs! Staying healthy during the holidays takes a conscious effort. No one likes a runny nose — or worse — when they’re trying to enjoy the holiday season. “Spreading germs increases in the fall and winter because people tend to stay inside, in closer proximity to others,” says John La Count, M.D., a pediatrician at St. Elizabeth Physicians. “These illnesses are spread by droplets, which are produced when people cough.” Make it a habit to get the kids outdoors when the weather is sunny because wet weather causes problems. “When it becomes cold and wet, and we have less sunshine, incident rates for illnesses do increase,” says La Count. “Fall is when it starts to become darker earlier, so people move indoors.” If you dress the kids appropriately, there is no season not to go outside in cold, sunny weather for a little activity. Exercising outdoors rather than indoors is a good prevention mechanism, according to La Count. Whether you play with the kids, or go for a run or a leisurely walk, mother nature can help you steer clear of viruses.

FIGHT THE COMMON COLD And then there’s the good, old common cold. “Rhinovirus [is] the most common, with

nearly everyone contracting this at some point during the season,” says La Count. “Influenza rates are variable, but generally increase over the fall to winter to include most of the U.S. — we are attempting to encourage universal vaccination to minimize potential spread and to increase herd immunity.” According to La Count, younger children are affected the most by the common cold that causes wheezing and respiratory difficulties. Adults even need a booster every 10 years to maintain a strong immune system. “Make sure you and your children have all recommended vaccinations,” say La Count. “Prevention is the best treatment, and immunization has been extremely protective with a significant cost/benefit ratio.”

TAKE ACTION Staying up to date on vaccinations is a good way to stay healthy, but there is more to it than that. Spreading germs happens by simply shaking your neighbor’s hand or going to a crowded birthday party where one kid has a tiny cough. Sometimes it is inevitable, but taking the right preventive precautions can decrease any chances of catching a cold. By all means, teach your kids to wash their hands often during the colder months; always before hand-to-mouth activities such as eating cookies and treats. And sneeze and cough into elbows — it’s a big way to avoid spreading germs!

on things like pencils. 4. Get plenty of rest.

5. Serve a balanced, healthy diet. 6. Clean areas where kids play

with bleach wipes to kill viruses and bacteria. 7. Use soap and water rather than alcohol-based cleansers to decrease the risk of transmission. 8. If you or your child become sick with fever, stay home until symptoms have resolved to avoid spreading to others.
