n what can sometimes feel like an oh-so-serious world, one in which your mood impacts your child’s mood, it’s good to step back and take note of ... your littles! Look at him! Look at her! What’s on their agenda today?! Absolutely nadda. They will do whatever’s on YOUR agenda. They will eat what you prepare for them. They will wear what you pick out. They will brush their teeth because you stand over them watching. They will march to your orders. And we all know what happens if you leave them alone by themselves while you’re in the other room trying to get something done. It gets so quiet ... oh, no! They must be doing something! You go see, and sure enough, he’s dropping his Matchbox cars in the toilet one by one. Or she’s cutting bangs for her doll. “No!” you might shriek, taking him or her by the hand, trying to not freak out. “If you drop cars down the toilet it will break the toilet!” “Huh?” he thinks, “whatever THAT means.” This is why it’s good — no not good,GREAT — to give your kids creative things to do from the time they’re able to do them. Yes, we love handing them our iPads or phones, but you know you feel guilty about that in excess. I mean, what are you doing? Since imagination is such a deficit today for today’s screen-loving kids, how about setting your littles loose with some pre-conceived activities you’ve whipped up? You don’t have to spend money, you don’t have to make slime or dough or rainbow bubbles! Just look in your own kitchen and combine things there with the toys he loves.

• Clear off your kitchen table. Put down a plastic table covering. (You may want to put one on the floor beneath the table, too). Plop your child in his seat and cover the area before him with flour. Hand him his plastic dinosaurs or other plastic toys and begin playing with him calling it “Dino Land.” After a few minutes let him go on his own.

• Cook spaghetti (takes minutes to do) then cool it down. Now pile it up in front of him (after swiping away the flour, of course). Let him add washable paints! • Now paint the plastic zoo toys! Give him a little paint brush that’s just right for his little hands. Add those junky Happy Meal toys you have around. • Mix up cornstarch and water to make a classic, ooey-gooey concoction. Separate into small bowls and add food coloring for different colors. • If this gets old, put down paper and show him how to splatter the paint onto paper for “splatter art.” Kids love this! • Of course, you already know about the joys of shaving cream for kids. Let’em at it! A, B, C, D, E, F, G ... Sing and play so easily. Naturally, you can find all kinds of whacky fun ideas online. Go for it. And in the meanwhile, oh look! It’s nappy time. Yay!

LAUGHING MATTER: KIDS & NITROUS OXIDE What does it do to kids?
W
hen he was little, Reading dad David Powell was given Nitrous oxide — laughing gas — at a dental appointment. A family he was carpooling with came to visit him at the dentist’s office. “The only problem,” Powell says, “is that I was hallucinating and they were walking on the ceiling.” He says that although he wasn’t frightened, he does remember being a little perplexed. Now as a parent himself, he can share that experience with his own sons, who “remind me of it every time I have a dental appointment.” Plenty of us can recall silly stories after our first encounter with laughing gas. But for kids about to encounter it, we asked a few questions. Pediatric Dentist Dr. Sarah Husted of Sea of Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, gave us the scoop on laughing gas and kids.

What is laughing gas typically used on kids? SH: Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that, when inhaled, is a safe and effective way to reduce anxiety, produce analgesia, and enhance effective communication between a patient and a health care provider. What are some common reactions to Nitrous oxide? SH: Nitrous oxide exhibits a superior safety profile when used within recommended concentrations. Common reactions to the use of nitrous oxide are euphoria, analgesia and anxiolysis. This may allow a patient to tolerate unpleasant procedures by reducing anxiety, discomfort, or pain. It also works well to reduce gag reflex. How long do the effects last? SH: The American Academy of Pediatric Dental Guidelines recommends “Where Every Family Matters.”
administration of 100 percent oxygen following the completion of treatment for a minimum of five minutes. Patients can resume normal activity after their appointment and can eat and drink normally. Most children go back to school after their appointment. What should parents do before or after their child’s appointment? SH: Well-rested, healthy children feel the most comfortable during dental procedures. A cough or runny nose could make it difficult for the child to breathe through the nose while laying back. Friendly language and a parental positive attitude always helps reassure a nervous patient. Our office web site has videos of children in the dental chair in a variety of scenarios that can also help prepare a child visually for an unfamiliar experience.

Get away and break free together at Cincinnati Escape Room.
W
e had less than 10 minutes left to solve the crime. We dashed around the room, raising lanterns to see the suspects. “Who did it?” “Where’s the guy with the mustache?” “No, not that one. It’s not him.” We made our desperate search at the Cincinnati Escape Room during our “221B Baker Street” adventure. Located about five minutes from downtown, Cincinnati Escape Room offers two other challenges as well. “Secret Cincinnati” tests Cincinnati natives to uncover secrets, and promises that “you will never look at a bowl of chili the same way.” Meanwhile, “Prison Break” turns guests into jail-breakers who must “escape the cell and bypass the security system.” A few days before our adventure, we checked the calendar on the website, reserved our time, and paid by credit card. About a half hour before we needed to leave home, we rounded up our group, and headed out. Escapees only get an hour to solve the puzzles, and the clock starts at the ticketed time, so we didn’t want to lose any precious seconds. And arriving on time might be jeopardized, if you don’t know where you’re headed. The Escape sign on Montana Avenue, a busy street right off the highway, is hard to see. But, we mastered our first challenge of finding the place, parked (for free!), and

went up to the fourth floor of the building. A friendly receptionist greeted us, and told us to sign in. Minors need parents to sign off on a waiver, since the experience is recommended for ages 14 and up. After we’d all registered, we were advised to use the restroom before the events began. A few did, and the rest of us waited, and heard screams. Lots of screams, from behind the walls. Next a group of men and women were ushered out of the room in handcuffs. “Good luck,” they said. “Have fun.” I felt a little nervous. Another group emerged, four men and four women, who apparently met behind Cincinnati Escape Room’s closed doors. “You almost did it,” the receptionist said. “We came so close,” one woman whined. Everyone in their group agreed, as they posed and smiled for a photo. “The picture will be on our Facebook page,” the receptionist said. “You can download it from there.” The group thanked her, and mumbled as they left, talking of trying again, and of being so close. We didn’t want to be close. We wanted to win. Inside the Baker Street briefing room, two videos prepped us. The rules demanded no destruction of property, picking of locks, or use of screwdrivers, and the next video told us that our mission was to prove our sleuthing skills to Sherlock Holmes himself. Victorian-inspired décor set the mood in the room, along with classical music and a curious Oriental rug, all rolled up -- with

legs and feet protruding. In one hour or less, we had to solve the crime, grab the treasure, and escape the room. At first we wandered around, clumping together, clueless. We touched stuff, opened drawers, read things, and wondered what to do. Nothing made sense. But then a clue came. And we found a key. And pieces started to fit. We worked alone, in pairs, and hovered over puzzles together. One of us had an idea, and sometimes it led to a solution, and sometimes it didn’t. But at last we knew what we were doing. Triumphant music celebrated our successes, but we hadn’t succeeded, yet. We were so close. But the clock was ticking. We knew the killer, had the treasure, but couldn’t unlock the door. With less than two minutes left, our youngest had an idea. We tried it, it worked, and we escaped! Barbara Littner David is a local writer and mother of five. CAMP CO-OPS! Create one for Your Child

ne of my son’s favorite camps was one I created with friends for our little ones the summer before they started kindergarten. Each mom took a day to have all of the kids and on the other four days got free time for herself — a success for all! Here’s how to create a memorable (and affordable) co-op camp for little kids:
RECRUIT 4 PARENTS of kids your child enjoys playing with and invite them to participate. Choose dependable, fun parents whom you know. Get their contact info and important details about each child (allergy info, for instance). Put all of the info for each child/parent on one sheet and distribute to everyone.

• CREATE A SCHEDULE, deciding which parent hosts on each day, Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. (or determine your own days and times). Remember, you will only be the host for ONE of these days; other days you will deliver your child to another child’s home.

Here’s the scoop on local summer fun for kids.
T
here’s a ton to explore when it comes to summer camps, and we’ve got the skinny on local top-notch programs that will satisfy kids of all personalities. Read on to find out what’s new this year, and make plans to visit our free SUMMER CAMP ADVENTURE FAIR on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Blue Ash Recreation Center (4433 Cooper Road) from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. It’s your best bet for meeting with camps face-to-face and finding out what they’re really all about!

Keep up with summer learning at Cincinnati Country Day School Summer Programs (countryday. net). Club-centered programs offer grades 1 - 6 engaging activities like Creativity and Discovery Clubs, Academic Blast, Nature Connection, Sports Series, Technology and in spite of the fact that the pool will be closed as part of the North Campus Project, campers will still get to enjoy some off-campus swimming fun. For the kid who just can’t stop clowning around, check out My Nose Turns Red (mynoseturnsred.org), the area’s only non-profit dedicated to teaching circus arts. Ten weeks of circus camps are available at locations throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and are open to ages 7 16, with a separate camp for ages 4 - 7. Kids
will explore circus arts and clowning, as well as get a taste of some physical skills like the gym wheel, unicycle, and aerial silks. Nature-loving kids will want to head to Cincinnati Nature Center (cincynature. org) for week-long, nature day camps for ages 3 - 13. Camps kick off in June and run through August at both Rowe Woods in Milford (4949 Tealtown Road) and Long Branch Farm & Trails in Goshen (6926 Gaynor Road). Themes include a range of topics this year, including Animal Babies, Read & Roam, Digging Into Dirt, Things With Wings, Earth Art, Eco Engineers, Creek Week, and the intriguing Animal Grossology. Older campers ages 9 - 13 can sign up for the Wilderness Survival Camp, which includes one overnight stay. With plenty of fresh air, hands-on activities, close encounters with animals and plants, your campers are certain to come home worn out at the end of the day. Great Parks of Hamilton County (greatparks.org) has several new camps to offer this year. Mythical Beasts & Magical Stories at Sharon Woods lets campers learn about fantastic beasts and enchanted forests with inspiration from Grimm’s fairy tales and Harry Potter. IEA Hunt Seat Bootcamp at Winton Woods Riding Center is designed for serious riders (members of an Interscholastic Equestrian Association team or collegiate Hunt Seat bound). summer of ‘17 Woods teaches kids the necessary skills for surviving in the wild, including how to start a fire, build a shelter, create a snare and signal for help. Summit Country Day School (summitcds.org) has a new line-up of day programs for preschoolers through Grade 8, beginning in June. Themes for ages 3 - Kindergarten include the arts, cooking, sports, a multi-cultural week and a wet and wild week. Grades 1 - 8 can choose from a menu of camps like robotics, forensics, fashion design and sewing, as well as sports, survivor skills and more. New this year is an all-camp lunch led by the Upper School student leaders organizing relay races, scavenger hunts and water balloon tosses. Registration begins in the first few weeks in February and camps are open to children from all areas. The Cincinnati Ballet (cballet.org/ academy) offers audition-based, summer intensives for dance students, but for those who just want a glimpse of the ballet world, check out the Kids Dance Camps. These weeklong “safaris” to explore animal kingdoms near and far will introduce students to the steps they need to explore the “terrain.” Participants will explore different forms of dance while building creativity, coordination, flexibility and strength, as well as artistic expression as they work toward a final performance at the end of the week. Registration begins in mid-February. Young athletes will want to hit up Big Shots Training (bigshotstraining.com), located inside Recreations Outlet in Milford. The brand-new sports facility helps kids keep on top of skills, regardless of sport. This summer, workshops are available in lacrosse and basketball for boys and girls of all ages and levels of play. Plus, kids can also sign up for one-on-one training to really up their game. Four-day camps begin in June and run through July. Aspiring thespians can check out The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (thechildrenstheatre.com) including 11 one-week summer camps starting midJune that include successive “Adventure Series” Camps designed for kids to attend consecutively, according to Artistic Director of Education and Outreach Jay Goodlett. Serious theater students can audition this

month for the STAR Camp Red Bank, a twoweek intensive camp for ages 9 - 18 held in July, or the STAR Intensive at Northern Kentucky University. Participants in these audition-based camps work with area professionals in all areas of musical theatre. The Mayerson JCC (mayersonjcc.org) has a little something for everyone, including traditional summer camps for grades K - 8, as well as one, two, and three-week specialty sessions for young campers covering fun topics like Super Science Sleuths, horseback riding, and Camp We-Go-Out, a series of field trips to venues around Greater Cincinnati. In addition to programs for youngsters, the “J” also offers Golani Teen Camps for teens in grades 9 and 10. Designed to develop leadership skills in kids, the camps include fun field trips with an inside look at what it takes to be a staff member at Camp at the J. Registration for camps is available online. The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati’s Camp Ernst (myycamp.org) introduces kids to fun “hang out” games like four-square and gaga, and this year, Program Director Michael Lindley has a new game planned: Nine Square in the Air. It’s like taking four-square to the next level, he says. Plus, campers at Camp Ernst can enjoy zipline, archery, fossil hunts, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding and more during week-long, overnight stays. Open houses are on April 2, May 7 and June 4 from 1 - 4 p.m. What do Harry Potter, Star Wars and Pokemon have in common? They are some of the specialized themes children will explore at Cincinnati Parks’ (cincinnatiparks. com) summer day camps. Open to ages 3 14, kids will enjoy the pop culture of science
fiction, magical fantasies and creative art projects along with daily hikes, games, live animal encounters and more. Camps fill up quickly, so register early! Although under construction for a while, Cincinnati Museum Center (cincymuseum.org) has plenty of happenings this summer. Camps for grades K - 8 are held at seven different locations around town like Union Terminal, the Blue Ash Recreation Center, Cincinnati Country Day School and more. Themes range from chemistry and engineering to dinosaurs and archaeology to the ever-popular Harry Potter camps. Registration is open now, and camps fill up quickly — sign up early! MOM REPORT: Big Shots Sports Training By Tina Pratt

ump, set, spike, dribble, pass, kick and putt! My 6-year-old is a sports fanatic! He loves testing his skills in sports he knows as well as trying out new ones. Whether you’re looking to practice for a specific sport or a little bit for many sports, Big Shots is your place to go! Located in the same facility as Recreations Outlet in Milford, they offer training in basketball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse and golf. The goal of Big Shots is to offer sports training experiences to help improve the skills of individual or small groups. You can rent courts and fields, participate in classes/clinics, or reserve the court, turf, or both, for a birthday party. They offer sessions for kids and adults. My son and I checked out Big Shots during one of the multi-sport clinics. Two-and-a-half hours of sports training! I had one happy and tired boy. The multi sport clinic consisted of 30 minutes of soccer, 30 minutes of basketball, 30 of volleyball, 30 of golf and the final 30 minutes to practice the sport(s) of your choice for just $35. They organized each group by age, so my son got to learn and practice with kids with similar abilities while improving his skills and increasing his vocabulary. While golfing he learned the word vertical, which he has been using correctly since. Parents are welcome to stay during multi-sport clinics, but they are also able to drop and go. My son said, “I want to go back because it was so fun. It was so big with so many things to do. I learned new things like bumping, spiking, and passing.” He enjoyed transitioning from sport to sport and he’s excited to show off his new skills at his next day of gym class, too!
