day by day By Susan Day

Pets are Kids’ Best Friends I’d like to tell you about all of the wonderful things that can happen with family pets. About the delightful days with balls of yarn and kittens, the fascinating things that hamsters and iguanas can do. But it’s not always like that. Life with pets is not a Hallmark card. Pets, while many times wonderful, hold a special place in family lives for all kinds of reasons. Many of you have seen assorted scenarios like I have: The dehydrated carcass of an escaped-and-lost-until-it-was-toolate fire-belly toad under a boy’s bunk bed. A wheelbarrow full of crawfish, lovingly pushed up hill from creek to house for further examination. Guinea pigs and rabbits that just sit there, all day long, day in and day out. Bearded dragons fed live crickets dusted with calcium powder (and yet again, “Mom! We’re out of crickets!”). Tiny turtles that dive into deep water from rocks when you walk into the room. Geckos, hermit crabs and too many fish to count, especially goldfish ... that can sometimes live a long time if you can get the water balance just right ... but does anyone actually do that? I have learned to steer clear of goldfish bowls at carnivals. But when kids are little and easily fascinated, they love all kinds of animals and the adventures that can unfold with them. Of course, if you make an animal your child’s pet he won’t remember

kind into your home. YOU have to teach the responsibility before you can expect your kids to take it on themselves. But at a certain point, a kid can indeed become responsible. My kids have received pets on birthdays from time to time because they’re a sure-fire hit. One time we gave our son a puppy ... for the family, really ... but he called her his and as far as the puppy was concerned, she was. If you know how to take care of a dog and do so, then your home life is bettered by a dog. Free love! My kids helped raise our dogs Cody and Scout from puppyhood to heavenhood. Now we have Bella and Briggs. I will say that when

ON THE COVER Dylan, photographed at The Anderson Center by Holly Burkholder Photography.

WIN ON OUR WEBSITE!

When planning a party for your kiddos, what’s your best money-saving, time-saving or stress-saving tip that can make a party a blast? Local Moms Say: “I just had my son’s party at Engineering For Kids. We did straw rockets and icecream-making activities. They also have a Frozen science or LEGO Robotics theme. They have everything there, so I didn’t do too much. They don’t allow cake, but you can have a cookie cake or brownies. For gift bags, I just built off the science fun and gave kids materials to build either a marble run or pom-pom thrower. All the kids had an awesome time, and it was the least stressful party we’ve had for our kids.” Deb Kellmel

“I try to stick with a budget first and foremost. I’m actually planning a party for my son soon ... Jurassic World. I’m creating lots of homemade things, and some things I bought cheap and am adding items to give them the theme. For instance, I picked up a box of Jurassic World valentines that I cut out to add to plain brown party hats I found on sale.” Megan Bettle

Meet our newest physician Smruti V. Patel, MD

r own Make you x! jewelry bo

Dr. Patel received her Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University and her MD from the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University. She completed her residency at Beaumont Health Oakwood Campus in Dearborn, Michigan. She has special interests in general obstetrics, general gynecology, preconception counseling, infertility, and minimallyinvasive procedures including Da-Vinci Robotic Assisted surgeries. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, weekend trips, traveling the world without an itinerary, experimenting in the kitchen, and capturing her son’s every moment with photography. “I have always had an interest in preventative women’s health care and the surgical aspects of gynecology, but it was obstetrics that set this field apart for me. I believe it’s a privilege and honor to be a part of a family’s journey to grow their families. From deciding to conceive, to understanding the many changes a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy, all the way to the exhilarating day of birth. While providing safe guidance and informative care, it is literally a part of my job description to attend birthday parties.”

MAY IS NATIONAL BIKE SAFETY MONTH Break out the bikes and helmets, but before your child rides, make sure his equipment is in tip-top shape.

W

arm weather calls for kids to hit the open road on their bikes, but there are a few things you should know about proper helmet fittings and bicycle maintenance before you let them go. First and most importantly, the helmet fit. Dawne Gardner, CCIC Injury Prevention Specialist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), says to check your child’s eyes, ears and mouth. “A helmet should sit level on your child’s head, resting on the forehead, one to two finger widths above the eyebrows,” she says. “If the child looks up he should be able to see the rim of the helmet.” Straps should be even and form a V under each ear, as well as lay flat against the head a little tight, she adds. Gardner also says the chin strap should be loose enough to breathe comfortably but snug enough that if your child opens his mouth, the helmet “hugs the head.” “Helmets come with fit pads to help ensure a proper fit. If necessary, use the pads where there is space at the front, back and/or sides of the helmet to get a snug fit,” Gardner says. Next, make sure kid bikes (and yours) are in good working order. Gardner says to inflate tires to the proper pressure and check them for any cuts or cracks. Inspect the brakes, and be sure to also check that seats

and handlebars are nice and tight. If your child hit a growth spurt last winter, make sure that he still fits his old bike. “Children should not be riding a bike scrunched up with their knees hitting the handlebars, nor should they be stretched out to reach the handlebars,” says Gardner. “The child should be able to dismount and comfortably straddle the bike standing on flat feet, clearing the top bar by at least an inch.” Need a new bike this year? “It’s not recommended that parents buy a bike their child can ‘grow’ into,” says Gardner, cautioning against compromising on safety. “Big bikes are hard to manage for little people,” she adds.

DOES YOUR BIKE NEED A TUNE-UP OR REPAIR? Head to our online Directories, under “Sports,” to find local bike shops that offer tune-ups and repairs. And head to safekids.org for a bounty of bike safety tips! “Where Every Family Matters.”

RIDE CINCINNATI CELEBRATES 10 YEARS! It’s the 10th anniversary for Ride Cincinnati, a family-friendly, noncompetitive bike ride that raises funds for breast cancer research at The Barrett Cancer Center. In honor of this year’s milestone, the event adds new options for families to enjoy, including a three-mile fun walk for those who don’t want to bike and a new Pink Mile on the last mile of the course (pink ribbons decorate the Purple People Bridge). Families can choose from eight- or 16-mile rides on closed road courses, and avid cyclists can choose routes that cover 26, 45 or 63 miles. Ride Cincinnati takes place on Sunday, June 12, and begins at Yeatman’s Cove in Sawyer Point. Registration is $15 - $20 ages 12 and younger, $30 adult walkers and $40 - $45 adult bikers. Visit ridecincinnati.org for a complete schedule of ride times and to sign up!

DIY PARTIES: FESTIVE IDEAS FOR

AT-HOME CELEBRATIONS By Sherry Hang

Local moms give suggestions for celebrating your child’s special day at home.

H

omemade parties are great for activities leading up to your child’s special day and awesome for the birthday itself since it will have your stamp of approval! Leading up to the soiree you get to make invitations, goody bags, maybe (if you dare) even decorate your own cake! We checked in with local moms to get awesome tips for making your DIY party a success.

SHOP YOUR PLANS

Planning is key when it comes to a party at home, and you’ll want to make sure you have all the big items covered — invitations, party decorations, games and activities for the kids, goody bags and of course, refreshments (i.e., CAKE!). Tackle them one at a time and you’ll have this party in the bag. “I love DIY birthdays!” says Northern Kentucky mom Amanda. “I typically give the party as my gift to the boys. I let them pick out a theme a few months out and start planning. I head to flea markets and craft stores to make unique party decorations. We do a themed photo shoot about a month before their

birthday and display the photos at the party. Family can take the cute photos home after the party, which the grandmas look forward to as a favor. Planning my dudes’ at-home parties is one of my absolute favorite things to do! I think allowing yourself time to plan it, instead of rushing, makes things less chaotic and more enjoyable,” she adds. A little creativity goes a long way when shopping for party supplies — there’s a lot you can make at home. “For Jay’s first birthday, we did a Mickey theme,” says mom Heather. “I made most of the decorations myself on the computer and just bought dollar store plates, cups and silverware in the appropriate colors instead of the expensive themed ones.” Finding deals here and there, or going with simple colors rather than themed decorations, also has the benefit of letting you splurge on something big, like an outstanding cake or tiers of cupcakes, a bounce house or a professional entertainer. “A lot of people don’t realize Sam’s Club does tiered cakes,” says mom Kristy. “We got a really cute Treasure Island themed, two-tiered cake for Izzy’s ‘Pixies and Pirates’ party. It was

really cute, tasted great and cost around $30.” Mom Kelly suggests timing your party purchases if you can. “I waited until Halloween was done to stock up on Disney party stuff and costumes,” she says. And consider a strategy on the time of day your party takes place to help keep costs down. If you plan your party between meals, all you really have to provide are some light snacks and cake.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE GAMES

You don’t have to go all out with invitations, decorations and fancy foods, especially since kids probably won’t notice or remember. What they will remember, however, is the fun they had. Mom Kim created a pirate-themed party with some brown craft paper and an old footlocker. “Invites were printed on white paper and glued to brown craft paper that had been burned around the edges ... rolled them up and tied them with twine. I got an old trunk like I had in college — put the goodies and his gifts in it and hid it, then had a treasure hunt.” She printed clues on the same craft paper and let the kids travel the yard,

birthdays

THE VERY BEST … field and barn to find the “treasure!” Mom blogger Marci threw a Doc McStuffins party for her daughter’s sixth birthday. She started with free printables she found online in order to spend funds on kid-sized nurse scrubs that served as both party favors and kept kids clean during the craft portion of the party, in which kids made their own BandAids from felt and Velcro. Party guests also made a stethoscope and a Book of Boo-Boos, all of which kept them busy and made for great take-home souvenirs. Get instructions for these crafts, as well as more great ideas, at her blog, My Heavenly Recipes (myheavenlyrecipes.com).

WHEN THINGS GO AWRY

What’s that they say about the best laid plans? Anytime you’re working with kids, chances are good something will go wrong, whether someone has a meltdown, or a game isn’t going as planned. The trick is to keep your wits about you, have back-up plans and be flexible about using them. You never know how some changes might actually be for the better! “I had every intention of making Connor’s

first birthday cake,” says mom Brie. “And last minute I ran out of time because of work. So I compromised and bought cupcakes and a small cake the day before the party and made a caterpillar out of that. Worked out better in the long run!” Mom Karianne got crafty when her own cake plans fell apart — literally! “I was making a tower cake [for a Tangled theme party] of eight three-inch round cakes sitting on top of two nine-inch rounds. I used cardboard between every two layers and had a giant strawtype cake support. It was looking good … then I started to ice it.” The weight of the icing caused her cake to sink and tilt, and eventually it fell over. After some maneuvering she got the cake standing, but made sure to have all the guests sing “Happy Birthday” and blow out the candles as soon as they arrived — a wise move, since the cake fell a second time! “We just stuck it on a plate and served it up later!” she says. AMUSEMENT PARK FUN!

Local moms offer advice and tips for successfully navigating amusement parks with your kids. Plus, what’s new at water parks!

“M

other Knows Best” is not just a song from the Disney movie Tangled. Mothers are the glue that holds families together and usually offer the best advice for family trips. We asked several moms for tips on how to make the most of a trip to Kings Island or The Beach Waterpark with kids ranging in age from 4 to 14.

MOMS KNOWS BEST

With different kids of various ages, families sometimes have to act like Scooby-Doo and the gang and split up — looking for clues is optional, of course. Local mother Jamie Mack says, “I have an 18-year-old and a 3-year-old, so we do this often. You have to make some compromises and do some splitting up.” “The best solution is finding another family with kids of similar ages, so there can be regrouping. Mine aren’t teens yet, just tween, and so they still have only a limited circle of freedom. I will walk them to a coaster and then choose something nearby for me and the little one to enjoy. The tweens meet up with me before moving on to another ride,” Andrea Herd Bell, a mother from Lebanon, says. “Or if we are with another family, one mom can hang with the tweens and one with the tots, then meet and switch. I hate to say it, but cell phones are useful for the tweens in this circumstance.”

What about parents who also enjoy the rides at Kings Island? “Parent swap! If you go to customer service they give you a card with the roller coaster rides on it and one parent can go through and wait the line and then ride a roller coaster while the other does something fun with the toddler,” Mary Edwards, a mother from Maineville, advises. “Then when the parent riding the roller coaster is done, he/she hands the other parent the paper and that parent can then enter the ride through the exit and get right on the roller coaster.” Tiffany Noth, Founder of Bloggy Moms & Bloggy Conference (bloggymoms.com), offers lots of motherly tips for a day at Kings Island. She encourages families to do their due diligence before visiting the park. “Plan your day before you arrive. Throughout the season, you’ll find various shows and events that you and your children may enjoy,” Noth says. “Hop on Kings Island’s site to see what activities are happening and which events you don’t want to miss. While you’re on the site, check out the meal deals and the dining options available. Don’t forget to stop by the ice cream stands near Banshee and located in Planet Snoopy!” She recommends parents check out the rider height requirements before visiting the park or as soon they arrive. Parents should grab a map on the way in to check out which rides their little riders are able to enjoy. Height measurement stations are convenient-

cincinnatifamilymagazine.com • nkyfamily.com

ly located at Guest Services, just inside the front gate and inside Planet Snoopy kids’ area. Noth gives health and safety tips, too. She says, “Wear sunscreen!” If you forget to bring sunscreen with you, Kings Island has several shops where you can purchase it. “Stay hydrated,” Noth urges. “Our favorite method for staying well-hydrated has been purchasing a souvenir bottle and rotating the refilling of it throughout the day with our favorite drinks, including water.” Kelly Ralston of Mason grew up in Northeast Ohio and has plenty of fond memories of visiting Cedar Point. “When my husband and I first moved to Mason 15 years ago, we were thrilled to have a theme park so close to our back door.” Ralston soon discovered visiting the park with four little ones didn’t give the grown-ups much opportunity to enjoy their favorite rides, but trips to Kings Island were still on the calendar. As the kids grew older and more independent, Ralston says they enjoyed more of the park and bought season passes, especially once all of the kids were ready to ride. “As they get older we go more often, or now just drop the kids off and the grown-ups stay home and relax. My kids love this park so much that the two oldest now work there. It’s possible to enjoy the park with multiple aged kids going in different directions,” she says, “you just need to find what works for you.” (please turn the page)

AMUSEMENT PARK FUN! WHAT’S NEW

Kings Island is now in its 44th season. The park, which is most famous for its 15 roller coasters and award-winning children’s area, is expanding its Soak City Waterpark. Soak City, which opens on Saturday, May 28, will debut its latest attraction, Tropical Plunge — a 65-foot tall complex featuring six waterslides. Three of the slides require guests to climb inside an Aqua-Launch chamber, where they wait for the floor to drop out from underneath them. The slides will send the thrill-seekers into a high-speed, almost vertical free fall through a series of flat loops and S-curves in a translucent flume. One of the six slides will send guests twisting and spiraling through an enclosed chute featuring four 360-degree loops across 449 feet of slide before splashing into a pool of water. The other two water slides are dueling 337-foot long tube slides sehding riders through a series of drops and turns. Kings Island is even more family friendly with the introduction of Family Care Center, built by Fischer Homes on International Street near the Eiffel Tower. The facility was designed with the style of a Fischer Home and features a covered porch. Family Care Center is a private and comfortable place where mothers can nurse, change diapers or relax. The facility is equipped with restrooms, electrical outlets, charging stations, Wi-Fi services, televisions, refrigeration and ice, and hot water. Tech-savvy guests will appreciate that Kings Island’s mobile app features a series of enhancements to help them plan their visits to the park, like the FunPix plan ($29.99 for a single day, or $39.99 for a season pass), which allows you to be professionally photographed throughout the day on rides or with characters, and find all your photos gathered into a single collection at the end of your visit. The Beach Waterpark will open for the season on Saturday, May 21. Beach-goers can soar high above the wave pool on a zip line and enjoy thrill-inducing slides or just chill by the pool. A kids’ play area, a heated wave pool, birthday parties, an arcade, and even swimming lessons are all part of the summer fun.

STRESS LESS AT HOME By Lara Krupicka

It’s not easy keeping things running smoothly at home. That’s why you have to simplify!

T

he complexity of your busy schedule combined with your home life can make you nutty. It may seem as though the concept of simplicity is impossible, but it really isn’t. In honor of Mother’s Day, here are a few tools to keep the stress to a minimum all year long.

1. Create device-free meal times. Establish a cell phone drop box before sit-down meals and keep it out of arms’ reach while you eat (and talk). Assure everyone that devices will be returned once the table is cleared and dishes are washed (by someone other than you — bonus relaxation!). 2. Fix homemade meals

using simple, whole food ingredients. Farmers’ market season is here, so buy your produce fresh.

3. Find joy in the free stuff around you. Beautiful sunsets, afternoon naps, children’s laughter. Keep a journal of what you notice.

4. Shed traditions that don’t

fit your family. As children grow, some of the trappings of celebrations and holidays cease to appeal to them. When all the preparation falls to you, it can be frustrating to receive a lukewarm reaction. Drop the frustration along with the extra work. Instead, let your kids tell you what they want the celebration to look like.

5. Embrace the indulgence

of wearing that outfit you love every week. Steve Jobs was known for wearing a black turtleneck and jeans. Simple. Find a signature look that’s easy and classic yourself.

6. Consider letting acquaintance friendships fall away to make more time for deeper relationships. It may cause you a little discomfort at first, but the payoff in the long term will be priceless. 7. Set aside a spot on the calendar for regular one-on-one time with your kids. Even just 10 minutes of chatting

over an after-school snack can help you both feel reconnected. And don’t forget to give your spouse regular, uninterrupted attention, too.

8. Display photos and

memory markers around your house. Pause occasionally when you see them to reabsorb the message and check your bearings.

9. Develop routines and rit-

uals for the repetitive stuff. Following the same pattern for activities you do regularly, like the bedtime routine, allows your mind to go on autopilot. Each routine you incorporate frees up mental space for all those other concerns you juggle.

10. Find your quiet space each day. Even if it’s five minutes spent drinking a cup of tea.

11. Offer direct answers to your children’s questions. Keep it simple and let them ask for further explanation if they want it. As parents we can tend

cincinnatifamilymagazine.com • nkyfamily.com

toward dumping more information at a time than our children might require.

12. Make time for being outdoors. Playing, gardening or just relaxing. Teach your kids an outside game you enjoyed in childhood and see if it catches on. 13. Repeat the same meal

every week (such as Friday pizza night). It’s the substance of tradition. Just make sure you choose a food everyone in your family won’t mind having over and over. Once you’ve tried a sample of simplicity you may find yourself hooked. The only catch? Don’t try to do everything all at once. The final suggestion: implement something new in your life one day at a time. Lara Krupicka is a writer and mom who employs many strategies to keep her home life simpler (and saner).

EXPERIENCE: Krohn Conservatory’s Butterflies of the Caribbean By Tina Pratt Spring is all a flutter at Cincinnati Parks’ Krohn Conservatory during its annual Butterflies of the Caribbean exhibit, a truly magical experience for kids of all ages. On our way to the exhibit, we walked through the butterfly nursery. My kids loved seeing where the butterflies are raised … a perfect time to talk about the life cycle! Next to the window there’s a basket of Milkweed seeds — grab a packet to take home to plant in hopes of attracting monarchs. The education room follows. Here you can purchase snacks, and kids can enjoy butterfly-themed activities. Next stop … the BUTTERFLIES! Various types of friendly butterflies from the Caribbean greet you as soon as you enter the showroom where these magnificent creatures flutter about the entire room. My son and I sat on a bench to take in the sight while practicing descriptive words like “beautiful, delicate, peaceful and colorful.” My 5-year-old says they’re “sooooo awesome and soooooo cool!” Here’s an inside tip for you: Bright colors attract the butterflies, so wear colorful clothing like we did and you’ll have a better chance of multiple butterflies landing on you. Be sure to pick up a treasure map when you arrive. It’s a great to discover all Krohn has to offer, and when your kids find all the “treasures,” they’ll enjoy picking out a prize at the end in the Visitor Center. You can bring some of the fun home, too, by ordering caterpillars from Insect Lore. Your kids will love watching their full life cycle at home, then releasing the butterflies in their own backyards. Butterflies of the Caribbean runs through Sunday, June 19. Krohn Conservatory is located at 1501 Eden Park Drive. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $7 adults, $4 ages 5 - 12, free ages 4 and younger. Call 513-421-5707 or visit cincinnatiparks.com/programs-and-events/seasonal-krohnconservatory-show for more info as well as special events.
