Be a Hugger

y 13-year-old doesn’t want to hug me anymore. Isn’t that sad? Well ... it’s not absolutely 100% true. Just yesterday he hugged me for the longest time, hard, with his head down, not wanting to let go. Let me explain. Boys get to an age where they’re embarrassed to be seen as less than a ... man. They go through a stage where they work really, really hard to NOT let water fall from their eyes. They stare, willing tears away and they get good at it. This happens around age 13 just when “the change” has occurred. They are trying to become “big.” They want you to notice this, but they’re not going to blurt it out or anything. And don’t hug them in public whatever you do. Now mind you, I’m a hugger! I’m the biggest hugger in my home! And when you’re a hugger you create huggers and everyone gets hugs! But this boy thing — this transition into the “BIG ME” — is hard to take. It can make you feel like something’s wrong with you. Why won’t he hug me? Now yesterday, when he was hugging me hard, it came after a conflict where I learned he had lied to me. I told him I was disappointed in him. I will not tell you what he did to earn my rebuke, but I will say it was serious enough for me to be strict in tone. If you tell your son, whom you love to your very core, that he has let you down, you literally rock his world. Only he doesn’t show it on the outside. He stares hard, absorbs the sharp sting in the back of his throat, bears up. It’s then that you have to give him a moment, because after saying you’re disappointed in him you have to deliver something really key in the next moment or so. You have to let him take in what you said, and then you have to say, “I love you,” and that’s when he softens and bows his head. So you keep going. You say, “You are a wonderful boy, and we all love you in this family, and even great men can make mistakes.” And that’s when, if you’re standing, you’re suddenly rocked back on your heels because you have these arms around you tight and his 13-year-old head against your heart. He’s loving you as hard as he possibly can and he’s asking for forgiveness. And no, you do not let go. You stay. Forever. Letting your son know you are disappointed in him is a fine, chiseled tool to be reserved only for an absolutely necessary moment. There’s not a kid alive who doesn’t want his parents to be proud of him. So when you tell a boy you love him soon after telling him he’s disappointed you, be prepared for an epic hug you’ll not soon forget.

DON’T FORGET: BABY’S ON BOARD!

With summer schedules changing routines, it’s very important to remember your little one in the car and to never leave children alone in a parked car. Ever.

ou hear about it far too often — a child dies of heatstroke after being left alone in the car on a hot summer day. How can a parent possibly forget about the baby in the back seat? It happens more often than you might think. In 2015, 24 U.S. children died from vehicular heatstroke, and as of this writing, four U.S. children have already died in 2016 (noheatstroke.org). It also happens a lot more easily than you might think. An exhausted mom forgets about her baby as she brings in groceries and her mind is focused on planning dinner. Or the schedule has changed, and Dad’s in charge of picking up the tot from day care, a task he normally doesn’t do. Distractions are everywhere, and if you’re tired, stressed, or confused over changes in your daily routine, you can forget about kiddos in the backseat — especially if he’s in a rear-facing carrier and you can’t see his face in the mirror as a reminder.

WHAT’S THE RISK? Babies are especially at risk in a hot car. When chilled or overheated, grown-ups have a very efficient internal system that prompts them to shiver or sweat and adjust their body temperature accordingly. But that system isn’t fully developed in infants, making it harder for them to adapt and regulate their body temps. Couple that with the fact that the interior of a car can reach 120 degrees on an 80-degree day, and you have the perfect setting for tragedy.

TECH HELP Car manufacturers have little to offer in the way of smart technology that reminds drivers of their backseat passengers. The non-profit Kids and Cars (kidsandcars.org) has pushed for “child-left-behind” regulations and technology in cars, but so far, no legislation has passed, leaving it to other innovators to fill the gap: EVENFLO offers a car seat with Sensorsafe Technology — a series of tones activated by a chest clip and wireless receiver reminds parents about baby in the backseat, or if the clip becomes detached while driving. It retails for approximately $150 at Wal-Mart or online at evenflo.com

DRIVER’S LITTLE HELPER is a car seat monitor that syncs with smartphones and sends alerts about movement in the car seat, and can message family and friends in case of emergency. It retails for $79.99 at driverslittlehelper.com Baby Alert International sells ChildMinder Soft Clip and Elite Pad systems, both of which send drivers alerts after eight seconds if the driver has moved more than 15 feet away from their child in the car seat. They sell for approximately $70 - $100 at babyalert.info. SafeKids.org offers low-tech approaches, like using a mirror so you can see your baby’s face while he rides in a rearfacing car seat. Or, put your phone or other important item in the back seat so you have to check before locking up the car. Some parents find that keeping a stuffed animal in the front seat with them as they drive serves as a good reminder, or a sticker reading “Baby in Back!” placed on the rearview mirror is a simple and priceless fix. Whatever you do, high-tech or low, if it helps you to remember the precious cargo riding along with you, you’re ready to hit the road.

PLACES TO TAKE KIDS FOR EVERY LETTER OF THE ALPHABET!

ive years ago, after my son was born, my husband and I realized that every date night we had we went to the SAME two places. They were both great places, but before we left the house we could tell you exactly what we would order. We decided it was time to mix things up. That’s when we decided to start doing Alphabet Dates. We would work our way through the alphabet finding places that started with the letter we were on. It forced us to be creative and encouraged us to check out new places. It was a blast! When we moved to Cincinnati, we decided it would be a great way for our family to get to know the area. We visited places like Graeter’s, Trammel Fossil Park, and EnterTRAINment Junction. We enjoyed the challenge of finding places to visit that would allow us to “cross off” letters of the alphabet. Recently, I reached out to some fabulous local moms on Facebook to help come up with some new Alphabet Date ideas for summer fun with kids. They helped create a fantastic list of places that offers fun for all ages.

You’re ready for all the family fun summer brings, but also be ready for the unexpected. We’ve got you covered with what you need to keep your kids safe.

e all know how to treat a bee sting and that we should reapply sunscreen on our kids every two hours or after swimming (that’s hard when they swim all day at the pool!), but how far are your kids allowed to ride their bikes this summer? Are they allowed to swim in your pool when you’re at work? Have you created a family preparedness plan in case of an emergency? Keep your family happy, healthy and safe this summer break and know what to do in a wide range of scenarios.

HOME ALONE

According to the most recent U.S. Census report, approximately one-fifth of U.S. children ages 5 - 14 are left home alone on a regular basis. There’s no state law that sets an age limit for leaving children home alone, so it’s up to you to use good judgment and determine when your child is ready for going a few hours without Mom or Dad around. Northern Kentucky mom Erin Rauf says, “I left both boys home alone at age 12. I decided they were ready to be alone once they understood the rules: do not answer the door,

don’t tell anyone that they’re home alone and don’t have friends over. Do call me with any questions or concerns and call 911 in an emergency.” Your best bet? Start small — leave the kids alone while you run a quick errand, and then work your way up to longer outings. KEY: It’s also a great idea to have friends in your neighborhood who know your home situation and that kids are there by themselves.

EXPANDING THEIR RANGE

The phrase “free-range kids” has been tossed about a lot lately with plenty of parents arguing against the idea that scary monsters lurk around every corner. Kids need freedom to explore, say proponents of the movement, especially when you consider the amount of time they spend in front of a TV, computer screen or cell phone. Extra freedoms can be available, thanks to technology. When your tween hops on his bike and heads to his best friend’s house two neighborhoods over, you can track his safe arrival on your GPS “Find Friends” app if he takes his phone with him. Apps can be used to your advantage and require checkins at regular intervals. Summer becomes

an opportunity to see how kids handle extra responsibilities.

GUNS, ATVS, ETC.

Responsible gun owners know to store guns in a locked and secure location when children are around, but be alert if you don’t know the parents where your child is hanging out. It’s imperative that you are firm with your children: if they see a gun, don’t touch it, never pick it up and alert an adult. You’re also wise to tuck away keys to tempting items like dirt bikes, ATVs and so on. Don’t forget about locking up medications. More than 60,000 children are brought to the ER each year for accidental intake of medicine, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). And the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that most kids use drugs for the first time in their teens — just more than half (54.1 percent) of the nearly 2.8 million people who tried drugs for the first time in 2013 were teenagers. In Northern Kentucky, parents can dispose of old or unused medications at several drug disposal locations, according to the Northern Kentucky Health Department. Find the one (please turn the page)

POOL SAFETY

According to the CDC, approximately 20 percent of drowning deaths are children ages 14 and younger. And for each child who dies from drowning, another five children are taken to the ER for “nonfatal submersion injuries.” It’s best to set the rules of the pool now. Decide when kids are allowed to go swimming and be firm on always having an adult or lifeguard present. What if your teen is home watching younger siblings? Is it OK to go swimming then? What about your neighbor’s pool — do they have a padlock on their pool gate? And what are their rules for swimming? Pool Safely (poolsafely.gov) offers tips to keep kids safe when it comes to hanging poolside:

• Never leave a child unattended • Keep a phone close by • Look in the pool first if a child is missing • Learn CPR for children and adults • Install a four-foot fence around the pool with self-closing and latching gates, along with gate alarms • Consider door alarms and window guards on doors and windows facing the pool • Make sure drain covers are compliant When it comes to swimming, preparation is best. Swim lessons (sidebar) are available year-round at a number of facilities, and many programs offer lessons to even the youngest of swimmers.

CREATING AN EMERGENCY PLAN

We hear stories all the time of heroic toddlers who call 911 in an emergency and end up saving their parent’s or sibling’s life. But those kids were taught to recognize a bad situation

and to call 911, so there’s no reason your child can’t be taught, too! It can be tough to talk to little ones about being prepared for emergencies without scaring them, but it’s all about providing knowledge and reassurance. Jane Elliott, a health educator for the Greater Cincinnati/Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, suggests that parents first talk about what makes for an emergency. “Remind kids that these things almost never happen,” she says, adding that parents should explain to children that they’re talking about emergencies “just in case.” Elliott says to teach kids to always find an adult if they can, even if that’s calling the adult on the other end of 911. Keep a first aid kit and show kids what it looks like, and how all the individual items inside are used. The American Red Cross provides a host of classes for both adults and kids, including baby-sitting preparedness, swim lessons, even pediatric and infant CPR at local Babies R Us stores. Blended learning options are available, where participants take part of the course online, and part on site. Head to redcross.org to enter your zip code and find available classes near you.

Whether you’re traveling this summer or staying home, having a family plan in place is essential in the event of an emergency. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers a downloadable guide that lets parents list all the important details that everyone from a sitter to a paramedic might need to know, including medication and allergy information, emergency contact phone numbers, and neighborhood meeting places. Additionally, at ready.gov/kids, access an Emergency Supplies List which details exactly what you need to have on hand in the event of a weather-related or other kind of emergency. FEMA suggest having enough supplies to last for three days and to keep a large kit at home and a smaller portable kit in your car or at your workplace.
