ur society tends to pick on each other these days. I guess we have Facebook to thank for that: you can post anything you want sitting behind the safety of your screen and without having to deal with someone’s horrified face or instant response. It’s too bad, really. We’ve kind of lost our dignity a bit when we start digging at each other. Let’s not forget we are humans and we’re not supposed to judge one another. THAT said. Let me tell you something awful that happened to me one July day many years ago. We were winding toward the championship of my second son’s little league season. It was sweaty and sticky hot. I remember driving the kids to the game, only my husband was bringing our 18-month-old over in a separate car. I arrived with my group at the ballpark just on time for my son to get the warm up in. We were all excited, this was a BIG game and a MUST-WIN one at that. So, of course, we were all involved. I was chatting with the moms on the bleachers, all of us into the game, and I remember seeing my husband standing with some of the other dads down on the third base side of the fence. I didn’t think anything of it. Did you hear me? I DIDN’T THINK ANYTHING OF IT. I was completely caught up in watching my son’s game. Then somewhere behind my ears a little voice crept in and asked: “Where’s the baby?” Thank God for little voices behind the ears. Moving from the bleachers, I made my way toward my husband, standing there talking with other dads, my toddler not in sight. This wasn’t right; my husband always brings him to me, so where was he? My feet were moving toward my husband and friends were saying, “Hi Susan!” and “Hey!” but my feet were propelling toward the men, my eyes scanning blankets for my little one. “Where’s the baby?” I said to my husband quickly. His face quite literally drained of all color. “Oh my God!” he said, and he started running — to the car. I was running, too. My lips were moving, “No, no, no, no, please, no, no, no ...” The parking lot was packed, and sweat dripped into my eyes, I couldn’t see right. I lost my husband, but kept on running and praying. And then he was coming toward me with my little Thomas who had been buckled into his car seat all this time. He was fine. Flushed and warm, but fine. “My God,” I said, crying now. “I don’t know what happened,” my husband said. “I am so sorry, Thomas,” he said, stroking his hair. “I wasn’t here for long, Susan, it was only a couple of minutes ...” I didn’t have a voice. I didn’t say anything awful to my husband because he was so clearly upset and shaken ... by what could have been. We stood there and hugged our little guy, but he wanted down. He wanted to run and play. Thank God he could. We followed him over to some friends on a blanket, quiet. Thankful. We look back at that day now and still get the chills. It’s our worst memory, hands down, bar none. I didn’t tell you this to scare you, or maybe I did. It’s July. It’s hot, and terrible things can happen to good, intelligent people. Let a story like mine remind you to stay on top of your game at all times and to thank your lucky stars for instincts. Please don’t judge us, and like I said, thank goodness this isn’t Facebook, because everyone and their mother would tell us what losers we are. Because ... somehow ... they think they are more human than us.

online MOM REPORT: FORT THOMAS TREE TRAIL

Facebook Post of the Month:

A reader sought out advice from local moms.

BY AMANDA CIANI, MOM REPORTER

“I could use some tips on how to get my 3-year-old to take medicine! He fights me on taking it, and I’ve tried bribing him with Popsicles, but he is not feeling it!” Reader Advice: “Put it in chocolate syrup. My mom used to work for a pediatrician that told parents to do it — and we have done it — and it’s worked wonders.” Lisa M. Cobb

“Suppositories. They make over-thecounter suppositories if he refuses to take anything. You could also try chewables ... after consulting with your physician of course. My 2-year-old will take chewable Motrin and her pediatrician is OK with that. Perhaps you could ask your pharmacist for advice.” Joyce Purcell

Our local Mom Reporters have been out and about, checking out summer attractions and venues for families. Amanda Ciani recently visited Fort Thomas Tree Trail. Here’s her report:

T

he Fort Thomas Tree Trail in Fort Thomas, Ky, is a hidden gem that I was just recently introduced to. This 1.1-mile trail boasts 22 marked trees, many of which are more than 100 years old. This is a moderately difficult trail that would be best for older children. However, I have taken my toddlers on this trail and they love it! My 3-and-a-half-year-old typically makes it almost the whole way before needing a break and my almost 2-year-old tuckers out about half way through. There are some steep hills, so make sure to wear sturdy shoes. I also would recommend bringing water with you, and maybe even a snack. There are four benches along the trail if you need to rest. On our recent adventure, we enjoyed taking in nature. We turned rocks over and saw mounds of pill bugs, ants with larvae (my boys loved the eggs!), centipedes, tons of worms and other creepy crawlers. If your kids enjoy hiking in the woods, check out this great trail! If they still have energy, the wonderful Tower Park playground is located nearby. The Fort Thomas Landmark Tree Trail is located near Tower Park off Douglas Drive — parking is available at the entrance of the trail, or at the Sports Complex parking lot.

TAKE A RIDE AT THE NEW BIKE PARK

at Boone County Parks

T

here aren’t a lot of places to take kids to learn how to ride,” says Dave Huff, executive director of Riding Forward, a non-profit that uses wheeled sports to get kids outside and active. But thanks to the efforts of Riding Forward, Boone County Parks & Recreation, and a handful of volunteers, kids now have a place just for biking at England-Idlewild Park (5550 Idlewild, Burlington). Phase I of the project was recently completed over Memorial Day Weekend, and features a beginner pump track — a closed loop of dirt berms and “rollers.” The track is open to bikes of all kinds and riders of all skill levels, who will use a pumping motion to maintain speed without pedaling. It’s a one-of-a-kind park for the region, according to Huff, who’s already working on the next pump track, and has plans for a dual slalom course as well as three jump lines, for beginner to advanced riders. “It’s great for families to do together,” says Huff, adding that he plans to introduce activities in the future, like after-school programs. Get the scoop on the bike park’s progress at their Facebook page (facebook.com/ ridingforwardnonprofit) or at EnglandIdlewild’s Facebook page (facebook. com/EIbikepark). Visit ridingforward.org/ donate to learn more about contributing to the park’s development.

DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS: FREE AT THE LIBRARY Story times are one of the best ways to support early literacy in your tot, and the Boone County Public Library offers story times for babies through early childhood. But did you know that some of the children librarians at Boone County Public Library also offer free developmental screenings for your children ages 2 months to 3 years? Using the Ages & Stages Questionnaire, parents answer questions about their little one’s ability to perform tasks like grasping a toy. Then you can discuss the questionnaire with the library staff member, and get tips for promoting your child’s continued development at home. For more info, and to schedule an appointment, call 859-342-2665, ext. 8207 or visit bcpl.org.

IT’S TIME FOR A SUMMER CELEBRATION A group of volunteers, known as COV200, have been diligently planning the City of Covington’s bicentennial celebration, and come July 9 - 14, everyone will reap the benefits of their hard work! The BB&T Summer Celebration features fun for all, including a giant Ferris wheel, food trucks, live music, historic home tours, a “Bike Centennial” ride through Covington neighborhoods, a dog parade, and a special Kids Activity Tent (courtesy of Duke Energy). Pack up the kids and head to Covington Landing and the RiverCenter Boulevard block between Scott Boulevard and Madison Avenue to help celebrate the city’s history. Hours are 6 - 10 p.m. July 9, and 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. July 10 - 14. For a complete schedule of activities, visit cov200.com.

SAFETY TIPS TO FOLLOW FOR AN

AWESOME JULY! We’re settled into summer now, and that means we can get a bit LAZY about sunscreen and safety. Worry not. We’ve got your backs. By Sherry Hang

HOME REMEDIES

POOL SMARTS

BABYSITTING KNOW-HOW

• Ouch! While bee stings are life-threatening to some children (and adults), most kids experience temporary discomfort including pain, itching, swelling and redness at the site of the sting. First things first — remove the stinger as soon as you can with your fingernails or tweezers. Next, wash the area with soap and water and apply a cold compress to relieve any swelling. The Mayo Clinic (mayoclinic. org) suggests taking an antihistamine like Benadryl if the itching or swelling really bothers your child, especially if he can’t seem to stop scratching the sting area, since that will only up his chances for infection.

There’s nothing more relaxing than a summer day spent by the pool, but it’s crucial that parents be aware of safety here. Julian Stewart of Guardian Pool & Fence reminds parents to keep these tips from the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (ndpa.org) in mind (and find the complete list at our website):

• Did your child wander into “leaves of three?” Wash the exposed areas as soon as possible, along with his clothes and any other items he had with him at the time, and apply a cold compress several times throughout the day. Calamine lotion, cool water and antihistamines may help relieve symptoms, however, if the rash is widespread or takes a turn for the worse, call your pediatrician.

• Remember that children who have taken swimming lessons are not “drown-proof.”

Finding a great baby-sitter is a parent’s dream, but how does someone become a great babysitter? Start with taking classes, says Amy Klebanow Marks, owner of Enriching Kidz in Cincinnati. Enriching Kidz offers Better Baby Sitters classes for ages 10 - 13 and covers skills like first aid and safety, infant and child CPR, how to handle emergencies, problem-solving, and skills like diapering, bottle feeding and infant care. Students will also get insight into the “Bill of Rights for Babysitters,” says Klebanow Marks, so kids are empowered to ask questions of the parents they sit for, and to ask questions of themselves, like how comfortable they are in the family’s house, or how comfortable they are sitting a baby versus a toddler or older child. Enriching Kidz also offers a Kidz Home Alone class for ages 9 - 12, and an Empowering Girls with Confidence course to learn about selfconfidence, role models, communication skills, and body image and the media. Help your baby-sitter be great, too: Before heading out for the night, make sure you have a home walk thru with your sitter to introduce her to your home. Don’t wait until you’re rushing out the door to toss a bunch of instructions at her, and then leave her with a stubborn baby gate latch or no clues about your baby’s favorite toy!

• Practice prevention when it comes to sunburns. Make sure you reapply sunscreen to the kids throughout the day! If your child does get a burn, cool him off with a cold compress (cool milk or freshly brewed, cooled tea can work well, too). Add a cup of cider vinegar to a bath, or apply aloe Vera or lotions that contain aloe Vera.

12 July 2015

• Designate a “Water Watcher” to watch over children in the pool during gatherings. Do not use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. • Don’t ever leave a pool gate propped open. • Learn CPR.

• Know the signs of drowning: Head low in the water with mouth at water level, head tilted back with mouth open; Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus or are closed; Hair over forehead or eyes; Not using legs; Vertical; Hyperventilating or gasping; Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway; Trying to roll over on the back.

We specialize in the care of infants, children and adolescents. Summer is a great time for children to be outside exercising and enjoying the weather! Encourage children to participate in sports and physical activities. Parents should educate themselves about the potential risks for those sports or physical activities. Some important tips: • Make sure your children have a physical exam before participating in their sports or physical activity • Make sure kids stay hydrated with mostly water -- sports drinks in moderation • Sunscreen is a must! Apply often and reapply as needed • Children need to wear helmets and protective gear when riding bikes, skateboarding and rollerblading • It’s encouraged that kids rest at least one day a week during a sports season • Athletes need to listen to their bodies and seek medical attention for injuries that cause pain • Parents should contact their pediatrician for more information or concerns regarding the sports season Three Locations. IT’S A HOMERUN WITH THE CINCINNATI REDS HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM By Barbara Littner David

Baseball fans of all ages can spend hours at a time gazing at all the memorabilia and more in this baseball museum.

A

Reds cap tops the Scripps Building and Mr. Red’s handlebar mustaches adorn city sidewalks. The historic Reds decor throughout downtown celebrates the All Star Game being played in Cincinnati on July 15, and there’s no better place to get into the All Star spirit than at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. With displays overhead, beside us, and covering all the walls, the new Kings of the Queen City exhibit enveloped us in All Star History. We learned about great players, their uniforms and equipment, and the origin of the All Star Game itself. I never knew that organizers created the first competition between the American and National Leagues’ best players in 1933 to coincide with Chicago’s Century of Progress, and that they initially named the game “The Midsummer Classic.” The Palace of Fans, the ornate Reds’ stadium of 1902-1911, would have been gone by then, but a replica serves as a theater at the museum. No shows were playing while we visited, but I still took a peek inside. After my glance at the screen and grandstand seating, I had to hurry to catch up with the family. I needn’t have worried. My son Johnny, a baseball fanatic, could have stayed and stared at the Reds Leaderboard for hours. He loves to study the stats, and the board lists all the Reds records in batting, pitching and stolen bases. Pete Rose, of course, holds the hit record, and the Wall of Balls, 4,256 of them, represents every

14 July 2015

hit of his career. As we climbed the stairs, we heard Marty Brennaman’s emotional call of the record breaking 4,192 from September 11, 1985. The words and cheering crowd brought back the moment for me. I remembered sitting in the family room with my mom, watching the game on our Admiral Color Console TV. When Pete hit that ball, we both hugged and cried. We shared more memories as we examined framed baseball cards, and then moved to a corner devoted to fan favorite Tony Perez. Memorabilia includes his Reds uniforms, and the Expos’ one, too, his smile in a Gold Star Chili ad, and my favorite oddity, his face in a set of Official Major League Players Baseball Marbles. More oddities caught our eye in The Front Office exhibit. Player salaries, a pistol carried by one owner, and Marge Schott, who had a World Series ring replicated into a dog collar for Shotzie. While my husband and I perused the Stars of the Queen City memorabilia, its green Reds jerseys, touch screen of audio clips, and wall of Reds Players voted into the All Star Games through the years, our son picked up a bat and started swinging. Next, Johnny and I gravitated to Strike Zone. It tests whether visitors can throw a strike from the mound, 60 feet, six inches away. I can’t. As a former softball player, I’m ashamed to say that I couldn’t. I tried. Several times. At best the ball bounced to its target, but mostly it rolled off to the corner. My son did better. He threw mostly balls, but at speeds of up to 90 mph, and actually did pitch a strike. Kids can have still more fun at the

“Where Every Family Matters.”

Kids’ Clubhouse with uniforms, toys, a climbing area and a slide. Young and old will also enjoy “You Make the Call,” an interactive studio with microphones and highlight clips for visitors to broadcast. We found my husband relaxing in a plush chair watching Reds bloopers in the “Ultimate Reds Room.” Reds’ stadium chairs, bats, hats, jerseys, T-shirts, mugs, pennants, light fixtures and street signs decorate every inch of this Reds fan cave. At the end of our visit, after we took selfies with the bronze figures in the Great Teams exhibit, we received memorabilia for our own Reds Room, a Billy Hatcher Bobblehead, one of the giveaways the museum features each month for its fans. J Barbara Littner David is a local writer and mother of five. She is also the author of Cincinnati Trips for Kids, a collection of more than 40 great Cincinnati-area attraction.

Tips for Air Travel with Your Infant

Y

ou can be a cool, collected traveler with your infant on a plane with these easy tips:

• RESERVATIONS: Make them early to get the bulkhead section so you have more room. Children 2 and younger fly for free as long as they're on their parent's lap, but your infant will still need a boarding verification document to get through security.

D

on’t just have a baby shower — have a fun one! Let laughter and joy flow with a few, silly games:

while coaxing the other guests to wail like a baby. Fastest one wins! When the game is over, give the contents of the bag to the new mom.

FAMOUS PARENTS As guests arrive, place a sticker on their back naming one half of a famous couple with children. The guests need to figure out who they are by asking each other questions and then go find their mate.

DON’T STICK BABY! Purchase cloth diapers, diaper pins, and pink or blue round balloons. Blow up the balloons and add baby faces with markers. Test the diapering skills of your guests by asking them to put a diaper on the "baby" — without sticking it and popping the balloon. This is harder than it looks.

FIND THE BINKY Fill a diaper bag with items you'd expect to find inside (and maybe a few things you wouldn’t!) like bottles, wipes, a diaper pad, jar food, blankets, etc. Hide a pacifier deep inside the bag. Challenge guests to find the pacifier the fastest

16 July 2015

DON'T BREAK YOUR WATER This outdoor game is for casual parties! Fill several water balloons and have your guests compete in a relay race, car-

rying water balloons between their knees and walking quickly from point A to point B without breaking your water. Team with the most filled water balloons wins! DON’T SAY BABY Use ribbon and small baby pacifier charms to make necklaces. As guests arrive, give them a necklace and explain that the purpose of the game is to collect the most necklaces. Tell them they can't say the word "baby," or whoever hears them say it can take their necklace away. Let the game continue to the end of the shower! Order a pack of 100 multi-colored pacifier charms on Amazon for $7.50. — Pam Molnar

“Where Every Family Matters.”

• SPEAKING OF SECURITY: Car seats and all baby paraphernalia have to be scanned by security. Breast milk and infant formula are not limited to the 3.4 ounce rule. The Transportation Safety Administration states that parents may bring a “reasonable” amount with them through security, but it needs to be separate from other items and “declared” when you arrive. Do not put any kind of fluid for your baby through the X-ray machine. • EXTRA CLOTHES: Aside from all of your wipes, diapers and such, have at least two changes of clothes for your infant packed in case of messes — as well as a change for yourself in case of spit up. Also pack gallon-sized zip-lock bags for soiled items. • CHANGING BABY: There are teeny-weeny changing stations (albeit cramped) in the bathroom of most planes. • CRYING BABY: If your infant begins crying on the plane, know that it's OK. Babies cry! Try to remain calm yourself. People who don't understand, don't get it. • YOU! If the going gets tough, remember the wisdom found in the words “Just smile and wave!”

A Baby at 40?

J

an Watts remembers being 41 and pregnant with her second child. "I was at our swim club with my 3-year-old and following him quickly around the pool's edge," she says. Her friend, dangling her toes in the water, laughed and said, "Glad it's you and not me!" "She didn't mean any harm," Watts says, "but I've never forgotten it, either." Having a baby at 40 — or in your 40s — is much more commonplace than it used to be, and the majority of older mothers have normal pregnancies. If you’re physically fit, eat well and don’t have pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, your overall risk of other pregnancy complications isn’t markedly higher than that of a woman in her 20s or 30s, says Aimee Rapp in her book, Yes, You Can Get Pregnant: Natural Ways to Improve Your Fertility Now and Into Your 40s (Demos Health; 2014).

“The main risk for pregnancy after age 40 is for fetal chromosome abnormalities such as Down syndrome,” says Rapp. Women who are pregnant after 40 also have a higher risk of gestational diabetes, hypertension and C-section delivery. Pregnancy in your 40s is different depending upon whether it's your first baby or your fourth, but if it's your first, one thing makes a big difference for first-time older moms: the gap between you and the younger moms. "I am definitely more emotionally mature than I was in my 30s," says Watts. "But if there's any drawback at all to being an older mom, it's that I don't have a lot of younger mom friends, so I have to really work at making them because I want my boys to have lots of friends his age — and we moms make that happen." But would she change her experience if she could? "I wouldn't change a thing," she says. "I absolutely adore my little men and I am blessed to be their mommy!"

Beware Online Breastmilk

Is A Doula for You?

New moms and dads can buy anything they want online, including human breast milk. And while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends against providing infants human milk from unscreened donors, some mothers are nevertheless buying it online. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), researchers recently tested 102 Internet samples of breastmilk and found 11 percent were contaminated with store-bought cow’s milk or milkbased formula powder. Of the positive samples, 10 were high enough to rule out incidental contamination. Cow’s milk can be problematic in infants with a milk allergy or intolerance. Because buyers can't test the milk they purchase online, the AAP says parents should be aware the milk they are buying might not be 100 percent human milk and use extreme caution.

You're up all night, exhausted and you long for extra help. A doula — a mother's helper — may be just what you need. Doulas provide in-home care for three to four hours a day to help your family (and especially you) adjust to life with your newborn. They provide what you need so you can focus on resting and bonding with your baby. Several options are in our area (for birth partnering, too). TO LOCATE A DOULA NEAR YOU, GO TO THE CINCINNATI AREA DOULA SOCIETY ONLINE AT CINCINNATIDOULAS.ORG.
