ENDLESS SUMMER

ust about now it’s going something like this: You get home from work after leaving the kitchen nice and clean in the morning, and dishes are everywhere. Mac and cheese is stuck to a pan sloppy with oily Hawaiian punch or something. Cups, left-out milk and food stuff clutters the countertops and sink. Cereal bowls and half-drunk water bottles dot the living room. Laundry’s been carelessly kicked around the kitchen, and everywhere is the sticky-gross evidence that your kids have done absolutely nothing all day but “chill.” I’ll say. They’re stoney-eyed from watching screens all day; hopping from phone to iPad to TV and back again. Do you know what it’s like at home for the kids all day when you’re not around? Heaven. It’s Independence Day. There’s no schedule. There’s nothing but hours and hours of endless hanging around. There are trash-throwing contests and loud whoops of joy. Kids sing at the top of their lungs and break into dance routines. They run through the dining room with your galoot of a dog, knock over lamps, and use pillows and small carpets to slide down the stairs. They build forts and leave them in shambles. The front door’s left wide open, the toilets rest unflushed. When you’re finally home, they pretend they’ve been doing their summer reading by quickly picking up their books and looking down. Little angels. They ask, “What’s for dinner?” You have one shabby ship of sailors. But you’re the captain. There’s only one way to kick this summer slump in the butt. As much as you want to scream and yell your way out of it, it won’t work. The WAY out is to get IN to something else. I’m not kidding. Sure, you need to lay down the law, get your chore wheel spinning, talk some sense into them. But you also need to make a plan. Remember: Summer. Is. Fun. Cool your jets because, after all, you CAN lord over them until they clean messes up. You can make them promise to never, ever, ever do THAT again (ha!). Do something different. Get your fam away from home. Take them to one of our area lakes and spend the day. Rent a boat. Reserve a campground. Turn what gets you down into what gets you up. Adventure. A little creativity. Make a list of what you need and supervise your kids as they put it all together. Put on the sunscreen and head out. Forget your troubles, come on, get happy. I know the start of school can’t get here soon enough, for some, but before you know it summer will be gone and you’ll wonder why you didn’t .... what? Fill in the blank and do it.

MEET THE PERFORMERS OF

KIDCHELLA

S

ave the date for Sunday, Aug.12, when Cincinnati Family presents the second annual Kidchella at Cottell Park (5847 Irwin Simpson Road, Mason). The extraordinary children’s music concert is supporting the construction of Common Ground, the all-abilities playground planned for Snider Road in Mason. Families can craft and shop with our vendors, grab a slice of pizza from the Mason Parks & Recreation Foundation and cool off with sweet treats from The Cone. And rock out to fun children’s music, of course! Want to know more about our musical lineup? Here’s who’ll be performing:

SONGS FOR SEEDS

ZAK MORGAN

JENNIFER ELLIS

Songs for Seeds is a weekly, 45-minute class for children ages newborn to 6 years to sing, dance and play along with a live three-piece band. Kids explore instruments from around the world, make magnetic art murals during singalongs, enjoy magic tricks and more. What brings them back to Kidchella? “We loved the idea last year,” says Luis Diaz. “Music is the perfect way to bring people together, and Kidchella is an opportunity to bring arts, music and different community businesses together to Cincinnati families. We are, after all, a live music program, and Kidchella is a perfect venue to present what we do best — a little rockin’ and a lot of learnin’ for preschool kids and caregivers.” Learn more at songsforseeds.com/oh/ cincinnati.

Grammy-nominated Zak Morgan gets compared to Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss for his unique brand of family music filled with stories and laughs. One of Zak’s most important messages he delivers is learning through reading — and he’s no stranger to getting kids and adults on their feet to join in with singing and dancing. “I’m looking forward to Kidchella!” says Morgan. “It’s always a fun event for the whole family and inspiring for me to participate and support the construction of a playground that will welcome everyone. What a wonderful mission and an honor to be involved in any way.” Learn more about Zak at zakmorgan.com.

Jennifer Ellis has been performing since she was a little girl. Over the years, she studied voice, dance, guitar, piano and theater, making her a complete entertainer. She’s a favorite among little ones for her high-energy Dance & Sing-a-Long Kids; parents love that her songs are educational and inspire values like independence, learning and having fun as a family. See Jennifer’s performance schedule at jenniferellismusic.com.

CARING FOR YOUR TEETH WHILE EXPECTING Pregnancy can affect your gums and teeth — keep on flossing!

“H

ave a baby, lose a tooth” goes the old wives’ tale, but how much truth is behind the myth? Not as much as there used to be, according to Ronald Hirth, M.D., of Hilltop OB/GYN. “In the ages prior to modern medicine and widespread calcium supplementation, women who were pregnant would often lose teeth,” he says, adding that this was especially the case when women experienced poor nutrition and were pregnant or breastfeeding for several years in a row. “Children will take what they want from you, and babies in the womb are no exception,” says Hirth. “During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there is a high demand for calcium from Baby to help form his bones. This calcium demand used to

12

July 2018

outpace the mother’s ability to replace it, and the baby would often continue to build bone at the expense of the mother.” As Mom’s calcium levels drop, he explains, her jawbones would recede enough to pull the gums and loosen teeth. “Thankfully, given our modern nutrition with calcium and Vitamin D supplementation, prenatal vitamins, and pregnancy spacing with contraception, this doesn’t happen as often as it used to,” adds Hirth.

BLEEDING GUMS

Does it seem like your gums are suddenly bleeding every time you brush and floss your teeth? It’s all part of being an expecting mom. “During pregnancy, the placenta makes a large amount of progesterone which keeps the muscle of the uterus relaxed,” says Hirth. “It also relaxes the tiny muscles around arteries

and veins, causing them to dilate.” He explains that this is happening in all mucous membranes, including your mouth and nose, making tiny veins more susceptible to injury and bleeding — meaning you might not only be experiencing bleeding gums, but nosebleeds as well. “While this may be completely normal and is a very common symptom, it is always a good idea to make sure your doctor knows about it and to see a dentist during the pregnancy because it could be a sign of some other underlying condition,” says Hirth. He adds that these symptoms usually reverse themselves after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

DENTIST VISITS & PRENATAL VITAMINS

Unless you’re experiencing a problem, Hirth says you really don’t need to see your

“Where Every Family Matters.”

dentist more often during your pregnancy, but stick to your regular cleaning schedule. And stick to your supplements and prenatal vitamins! “All pregnant and breastfeeding women should consume 1,000 mg of calcium from supplements and food every day,” says Hirth. “They should also consume 600 IU of Vitamin D a day.” He advises future moms not to skimp here. “Many women don’t take their prenatal vitamin because ‘I didn’t take it with my first pregnancy and my baby turned out fine.’ What they don’t realize is the prenatal vitamin is mainly for their own health. Taking it helps keep your bones strong, helps to avoid anemia and blood transfusions, and keeps your hair and nails healthy.” Teeth, too! Sherry Hang is editor of this publication.

STRANGE SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY Growing a human being inside of you means all kinds of weird things are happening in and on your body! These are a few normal oddities to expect: • Saliva overdrive • Excessive sweating • Skin discoloration • Carpal Tunnel syndrome • Vocal Changes • Migraines (or the absence of migraines if you’re typically a headache sufferer) • Excess gas The good news? Most strange pregnancy symptoms resolve on their own and are only a minor inconvenience in the work of getting Baby here. Of course, peace of mind is important, so it’s always good to discuss the weird things your experiencing with your OB/GYN to be sure. Ask more, stress less!

BEST BETS FOR BOATING & SWIMMING BY AMANDA HAYWARD

July’s the perfect month for zipping around on a lake, camping under the stars and more. Enjoy!

L

isten. The only way to take on smoldering July heat is to EMBRACE IT. Dig

in to FAMILY TIME. Find the closest body of water and get IN IT — fast! Luckily, you don’t have to spend big bucks on a motorboat or buy airlines tickets to the coast to find a beach. Take the family for a short drive to one of the lakes in our area and you’ll find all the water fun you can ask for. Here are some of the coolest — and closest — parks you can go to and feel like you’re away on a family vacation. Most of the lakes’ boat rentals include kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards (SUP) and pedal boats. We’ve got splashpads here, too.

SHARON WOODS HARBOR 4631 E. Kemper Road 513-769-4326 greatparks.org/parks/sharonwoods/sharon-woods-boathouse The park, boat rentals and picnic area are all close together, so work up an appetite and take advantage of the snacks, ice cream and beautiful lake all at once.

Grab your fishing gear, rent a rowboat and head out to the lake. No fishing gear? Rent gear and bait when you get there. No fishing license required. Day or season passes are available at the boathouse.

LITTLE MIAMI CANOE RENTAL 219 Mill (S.R. 123), Morrow 225 Corwin Road, Oregonia 513-899-3616 littlemiamicanoe.com Looking for a little more adventure? Little Miami Canoe has two locations: Oregonia, OH, closer to Dayton, and Morrow, OH, only a 10-minute drive from Kings Island. Choose between a 2-, 4-, 8-, 10- or 12-mile canoe trip, or give a raft or tube a whirl down the Little Miami River. There are more water excursions where that came from. One-day river trips are also available for larger groups.

cincinnatifamilymagazine.com • nkyfamily.com

The lake has a 1,200-foot beach, swimming and boat rentals. Have a boat? Pick from one of the six boat docks along the lake, and end the day with a picnic lunch at one of the large picnic areas.

CAESAR CREEK STATE PARK MARINA 8574 E State Route 73, Waynesville • 513-897-1092 parks.ohiodnr.gov/caesarcreek Park your boat at one of the five boat docks at the marina stocked with boat equipment, supplies, bait and more, and visit the snack bar. The new South Shore Marina (6850 Corwin Avenue, Waynesville) offers boat rentals as well. Then grab the kids and build sandcastles along the 1,300-foot long sandy beach or park your boat at one of the boat and swim areas.
