sually around 5 a.m. my hand flies through the dark to find my iPhone on the nightstand. I hit “snooze” for an extra 9 minutes, then do it again. So that’s how I wake up at 5:18 in the morning. Hey, every minute counts. I am grateful for my gentle-bells wake-up tone; far cry from the angry alarm my mother woke to years ago. Then we’re off! The dogs run down the stairs before me, ready for breakfast and eager to go out. I pour my coffee, hit it with cream, let the dogs in (wipe the paws off, first), throw last night’s wash in the dryer, get the lunches going. Yes, I make my boys’ lunches. Yes, they are old enough to make their own lunches, but I actually like doing it and giving them plenty since they’re both athletes after school. I miss my older two, say quick prayers for them in between slathers of mayo, prayers for all of us, sip my coffee, light a candle. I do. I like my morning kitchen candle, and you’ve got to do what you like. You should try it. It adds a cozy touch to the early morning. Then it’s, “You look handsome, honey,” or “Can’t we try a polo shirt?” or “I said a nicer shirt, please” or “You can’t go to school without eating; your brain needs food to function!” or “Let’s go, let’s go, it’s time to go!” And a splash more coffee and you know what I mean. Once they’re pulling out of the driveway (my oldest drives my youngest), it’s my turn, only it’s a rush because, well, there’s lots to do. I’d love to settle down, chill, hang out. My kids are really good at that; they’re not really aware of the woman in the background doing everything to make that possible for them. And yet life is infinitely easier than it used to be when all four kids were at home and I juggled work, too. It was always a race to this, a race to that, breakfast, lunch, dinner, shopping, cooking, driving ... Speaking of which. After changing my jeans (courtesy of muddy dog paws) before dashing out, I quickly adjusted my makeup and hair and got on my way. Rush, rush, figure out a way to get around the traffic, whip around the back way, my mind a whir of busy thoughts: my kids, my family, upcoming Thanksgiving and family plans, soccer games, football games, this, that and the other thing and then boom! I saw her. Waiting in traffic to get on the interstate, I stared. A woman in a sleek, black Lexus. Cool and collected, her white-blonde hair was pulled back into a thick pony tail with a special clasp, her bracelet glinting in the sun. Staring straight ahead, she was composed, peaceful ... and then I thought ... past the childrearing years. I was suddenly sad. I don’t want these years to end! The too-busy-for-much-else kid years. I love having kids at home. They give me a reason to rush, a reason to pack lunches, to nag about a shirt. I want quick kisses on the cheek. I want the hectic days when there’s too much to do and we can’t do it all. I want the spinning plates and the catching them before they fall! I don’t ever want my life to be as quiet and serene as the Lexus lady. I love a busy family life. I want the ins and outs and ups and downs. But, OK. Stay in the moment. Go to work. Plan on dinner ... one day at a time! And then a thought: Maybe a Lexus will be nice one day.

FREE SHOWS AT NKU’S HAILE PLANETARIUM! F amilies can stargaze all winter long at Northern Kentucky University’s Haile Planetarium, which offers free, hour-long shows on Monday and Tuesday afternoons (perfect for homeschoolers!) and Friday evenings. Shows include a look at the skies with themes like Monsters of the Cosmos and the Secret Lives of Stars. The Planetarium also offers special shows, including the upcoming Starry Night Improv on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m., when NKU’s Improv group will perform. Cost for this show is parking only. WRITE A LETTER, GET A LETTER ... FROM SANTA! Kenton County Parks is gearing up for the annual Letters to Santa program. Kids can write a letter to Santa and drop it off at one of the Santa Express Mailboxes beginning Monday, Nov. 7. Take along a donation of nonperishable food or a personal care item and receive a reply letter from the Jolly Old Elf himself. Santa Express Mailboxes are located at all three Kenton County Public Library branches and Kenton County Courthouses. EXPANSION UNDERWAY AT ERLANGER LIBRARY The Erlanger branch of the Kenton County Public Library (401 Kenton Lands Road, Erlanger) has a new construction project that will add 13,000 square feet to the facility. Next year when the project’s complete, visitors will enjoy a new meeting room, a space for studying, and the STREAM Learning Center offerings of STEM/STEAM programs and curriculum. In addition, the Library’s IT and Children’s departments have been working together to create STEM/STEAM kits for parents to enjoy with their little ones — these “Maker Packs” include kits for preschoolers and kindergarteners, while the rest are aimed at older kids and adults. LITTLE LOVES: WHAT’S BEING DONE ON PREMATURE BIRTH RESEARCH By Sherry Hang
For World Prematurity Month, you can help local doctors and researchers find answers to spontaneous premature births.
T
hursday, Nov. 17 marks a special day for parents whose bundles of joy arrived earlier than expected. World Prematurity Day is designed to raise awareness of the risks of premature birth — now the leading cause of infant mortality in the United States. An estimated one in eight babies are born prematurely, says the March of Dimes, and babies who survive often suffer from lifelong medical and developmental disabilities. But what causes prematurity? It’s often hard to say, according to doctors Louis Muglia, M.D., and James Greenberg, M.D., of the CENTER FOR PREVENTION OF PRETERM BIRTH (cincinnatichildrens.org/ research/divisions/c/pretermbirth) at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). Approximately 70 percent of premature births are spontaneous and without clear causes. The

need for answers has driven a unique collaboration between CCHMC, local hospitals and health agencies, as well as research facilities around the country. The Center aims to reduce the number of premature births with a multi-faceted approach that includes research, community outreach and education. Research is done through the MARCH OF DIMES’ PREMATURITY RESEARCH CENTER OHIO COLLABORATIVE, which includes more than 100 faculty investigators conducting a range of studies on everything from genetics to racial disparities. (Prematurity disproportionately affects African-American women, according to Greenberg, but it’s also unclear as to why.) The Center’s CRADLE CINCINNATI program (cradlecincinnati.org) includes area hospitals and health agencies like the Hamilton County and City of Cincinnati Health Departments, and offers
resources and information to expecting parents. Two important messages for women: 1) Wait one year between delivery and getting pregnant again 2) Stop smoking The Center’s FAMILIAL PRETERM BIRTH CLINIC provides consultations for high-risk pregnancies — those women who have a family history or previous preterm births. Two maternal fetal specialists are available, who make recommendations for interventions and potential treatments. Expecting moms can contact the clinic at 513-6363882. “We’re very accommodating to schedules,” says Muglia. “We would love for people to come to us. We really want everyone to have a healthy pregnancy.”

The new way for getting around town is very family friendly.

he ride is smooth, the interior sleek, and it’s easy and inexpensive to use. Cincinnati’s street car, The Cincinnati Bell Connector, has exceeded anticipated ridership by more than 500 percent for weekends, and the holiday season will drive even more people to take advantage of its fast and efficient service to some of downtown’s most popular attractions. The route includes stops at Smale Park, the Banks, Jack’s Casino, the Freedom Center, Paul Brown Stadium and Washington Park, but the following stops offer familyfriendly activities throughout November.
FOUNTAIN SQUARE’S ICE RINK (myfountainsquare.com) The ice rink provides family entertainment all winter long ... if the weather cooperates. Afterschool specials, Monday through Thursday, give students and children 18 and younger half off on skate rentals (rink admission is $6, skate rental is $4; children 55 inches and shorter must be accompanied by an adult while on the ice). On Saturdays from 12 - 3 p.m., skate and take in a show, as the Fifth Third Bank LED Video Board shows familyfriendly movies. Tuesday, Nov. 22, marks the return of the popular Turkey Bowl. t’s difficult to maintain a positive outlook following hardship. Ironically, though, many families who suffer from one of life’s curve balls find a way to give back to those who supported them during their time of need. Meet four families who did exactly that.

Kilee Brookbank is a typical college freshman — attending class, making friends, figuring out what she wants to do in life. But what’s not typical is that Kilee has already published her own book and started a charitable foundation. Many may remember Kilee’s

story — in November 2014, Kilee suffered second and third degree burns on 45 percent of her body in a house explosion caused by a gas leak. After multiple surgeries and skin grafts, she endured the painful process of healing, including re-learning everyday tasks like tying shoe laces. Kilee might not have survived the explosion, but she and her mother, Lori Highlander, agree that two important factors were in their favor: family, and the good fortune of living only an hour away from the Shriners Hospital for Children Cincinnati. “We wouldn’t have made it without them, we were lucky to be so close,” says Lori. Kilee remembers that many of the children she met during her stay had to travel from across the country, even from around the world. “I could see how that affected them, being in an unfamiliar place.”
Inspired by their experience and the work done at Shriners, (and as a way to work through the emotional toll of recovery), Kilee and Lori contributed to a book that detailed their journey from each of their perspectives. Titled Beautiful Scars, a portion of the book’s proceeds benefits Shriners Cincinnati. In addition, Kilee and her family also founded the Kilee Gives Back Foundation. In 2015, the Foundation hosted a charity golf outing that raised approximately $40,000, and this year, that same outing raised $55,000. More fundraising activities are in the works. Nadjah Bray, 12, and the oldest of five, discovered an interest in cooking when her sister was born with cerebral palsy. While her mom Dwan spent long days in the NICU, Nadjah would prepare meals for the family, including her twin brothers who have autism. A fan of the TV show Chopped, Nadjah was excited to learn that there was a version just for kids, Chopped Jr. So she went to the show’s website and applied — informing her mom later with an off-hand remark about how the show’s producers in New York might call! Dwan was only a little sur-
prised when the show did call to set up a Skype interview. “There’s nothing she can’t do,” she says. “When she tells me something, I learned quickly that I better listen, take note and be ready!” Nadjah was invited to compete on the show, and traveled to New York with her grandparents, who were there to watch her win the episode, as well as $10,000! What does she plan to do with all that money? Use it to help kids like her. As a child with special needs siblings, Nadjah knows that there are plenty of kids who need a place to go when things get frustrating at home. So she and her mom are working on building a website for kids that will do exactly that — provide a safe place where kids can chat with others who “get it.” “I always feel better finding another mom who understands the way I feel,” says Dwan. “I want to help kids, but I want them to help me, too,” adds Nadjah, describing the site, which is still in development, as a place where kids can share good days and bad days. “I like giving back and that’s one of the ways I can help.”

learned they were expecting their first child two years ago. But things didn’t go as the couple hoped, and after 10 days of life, the Jones’ made the heartbreaking decision to turn off baby Christopher, Jr.’s (“Junior”) ventilator. Going home that night, Danielle remembers feeling all alone. She and Chris looked for ways to grieve as well as give back, including donating Junior’s organs
for research and donating breast milk. They met with a bereavement counselor, and reached out to other parents who experienced similar losses. But Danielle admits that she just couldn’t find what she was looking for. At one point, she mentioned to a friend the idea of starting her own support group. “Let’s do it!” was the reply. With Chris’ support, Danielle organized the Angel Baby Network’s first gathering in December 2015. Aiming to meet six times a year, the Network is designed not only to connect families with each other, but also to link parents to professional resources, like doctors and counselors. “I wanted our support group to be different,” says Danielle. “Our set-up includes an ice breaker, raffle items … it’s a light-hearted gathering.” She explains that while certainly parents may express their frustration and sadness, she wants them to also “feel joyful by the time they leave.” The Jones’, who are currently working on a book about their experiences titled As Sure As Tomorrow: One Couple’s Journey Through Loss and Love, are hoping to grow Angel Baby Network into a national organization. Having already fielded requests about other state chapters, Danielle is working on establishing the Network as a 501(c)(3). “When you feel alone, it’s like adding insult to injury,” says Danielle. “We’re providing families with an outlet to feel normal, to know they’re not alone as they work through this.” Angel Baby Network is open to all parents who have lost a child, according to Danielle. Tiffany and Keith Messer’s pregnancy was not an easy
one. On top of carrying twins, the couple learned one of the babies suffered from congenital heart disease. In spite of many complications along the way, twins Benjamin and Lucas (see the cover of this issue) were born in June 2014 — six weeks early. Both were placed in the NICU, but Benjamin was later taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), where he underwent two open-heart surgeries in the first month of his life. Those two surgeries turned out to be the first of many over the next year — a tough journey that earned Benjamin the nickname “SuperBen.” Unfortunately, shortly after the twins’ first birthday, the Messer family had to say good-bye to Benjamin. Throughout that arduous time, the Messers found comfort in their family, friends and even coworkers, who all rallied to support them, whether they helped clean or provided meals, or were just a strong shoulder to lean on. Just before SuperBen’s fourth surgery, Tiffany’s fellow teachers at Sharpsburg Elementary in Norwood wanted to show their support. One of them came up with the phrase BenStrong, and T-shirts were quickly designed. The shirts were initially meant for the staff, but then they were offered to the families of Tiffany’s students. Soon, others purchased them and posted pictures on social media of themselves proudly wearing the shirts with the hashtag #BenStrong. “We didn’t expect it to blow up,” says Tiffany, adding that friends are even traveling with

their BenStrong shirts and sharing pics from around the world — which the Messers say means more than financial contributions. “The monetary thing is nice,” says Keith, “but we got through what we got through because of our friends and family.” He adds that it’s important to keep the support coming, while Tiffany doesn’t want people to feel they have to shy away from talking about SuperBen. “It’s OK to ask how we’re doing,” she says. “Please do! I want to feel comfortable talking about Ben, even years from now.” Funds raised from the T-shirt sales initially helped support the Messer family, but the couple has since used the funds to donate back to the Heart Institute at CCHMC. They have also organized a toy drive and a Zumba-thon to purchase toys, gift cards and copies of the book Patch: The Braveheart Lion for the Heart Institute’s patients and families. MOM REPORT: The North Pole Express By Amanda Ciani

lick clack along the tracks and hop aboard the North Pole Express! Last year, my son Dominic and I enjoyed a MommySon date train ride together. He got all decked out with a button-down shirt, bow tie and even holiday suspenders. There’s some old and new to expect this year: We boarded the train and headed toward the caboose as the train filled with happy folks. Some were decked out in their finest holiday pajamas, others displayed their cheer by smiling ear to ear. It was downright frigid outside, but we were toasty warm inside! We heard two long train whistles, “Chooooo Chooooooo,” meaning it was time to depart. The train’s cars swayed back and forth, as kids started singing holiday jingles. Dominic clung to his ticket, since we recently watched The Polar Express movie. We saw a couple of mysterious lights (car brake lights, but don’t tell Dominic, he firmly believes it was Rudolph’s nose!). This year, hot chocolate and cookies are available on the platform before you board the train, along with fun and games for kids and volunteer carolers on select days. During the actual train ride, Santa and his elves make their way through the train to visit each family, so be sure to bring a camera! At the end of each visit, Santa gifts a bell from his sleigh. You’ll be back where you started and your trip is complete! On our way out, Dominic asked the conductor, “Excuse me mister conductor, can we get a picture?” The conductor found a nice spot for the picture and now this mommy-son date will be a treasured memory. A trip on the North Pole Express with the LM&M Railroad is the stuff that holiday memories and traditions are made of; you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the North Pole via the North Pole Express!
