All dentists become “general” dentists after completing four years of college and four years of dental school. As a general dentist you can practice all aspects of dentistry. A pediatric dental specialist must complete an additional 24 month residency program that is accredited by the American Dental Association. Within that 2 year program we are specifically trained on comprehensive dental care as it relates to infants, children, adolescents, and those with special health care needs. Pediatric residency training includes traditional fields of dentistry as well as caries prevention, behavior guidance, growth and development, trauma, sedation, hospital dentistry, and pharmacological management.

Why are some children put in braces so early? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children in the United States have an orthodontic screening by an orthodontic specialist by age 7. That doesn’t mean that the children begin treatment at that age. It simply means that a specialist should evaluate the child. If early, interceptive treatment is recommended, the goal should be to properly align the bite and the teeth within a one year time frame. There are several indicating factors that a child may need early treatment, such as creating room for crowded, erupting teeth and fixing crossbites in the front and back of the mouth to create facial symmetry. Ideally early treatment will reduce the need for permanent tooth removal and also help to reduce the time for braces in the future.

think it’s a good idea that every new year we all sort of desire to press “reset.” This keeps us in check and calls up our basic inner goodness, giving credence to “turn over a new leaf.” We are all better when we are trying to improve ourselves. Especially us moms. New years often begin with a diet. They start easily enough because of holiday eating remorse, but diets get old, fade away, and you have to begin again. Kids get old, too ... but you can’t begin again. They will remember what they remember. Turn around and your child’s leaving for college. This happens, this happens, this happens. This quality of life that makes days long but years short can really trip a mother up. You have to figure out a way to be the mom you want to be for your kids even as you’re raising them. One day your child will be a teenager and you’ll ask, “When did THAT happen?” Once your kids are on the cusp of leaving home, you’ll want them to stay, but they’ll want to go. What “piece” of you will go with them? What “piece” of you goes with your children each day no matter how old they are? Are you successfully being the mom you want to be? This new year, let’s resolve to be the moms we want our kids to remember. Tips for us both: • Think of a mom you know and admire. Notice the way she handles her kids: a light touch, easy going, stress-free. Can you take on a few of her good qualities — even if your circumstances are way different from hers? • Decide on personal areas of improvement you can make. Decide to carve out more time for playing/hanging out with your kids (without an agenda) ... this sort of thing .

• Vow that you’re going to really try to understand each one of your kids for who they are — not who you want them to be. This simple thought will put you in check. Listen to each one of your kids and let them be who they are. • Enjoy the moments. Your children will remember the little things they experienced growing up, not how clean your house was. They’ll remember that you rode bikes together or jumped on a bed. They’ll remember the times you made time to enjoy being with them ... or not. • Refocus. All moms can have “off” days or make mistakes. All moms can suffer the guilt of yelling too much. When you have those bad moments, take time to ask yourself what went wrong? Take personal time to re-center yourself, whether it’s through yoga or exercise, therapy, spirituality, ongoing counsel from a dear friend or whatever you need to put in place. • Try meditation or prayer. For me, it’s prayer, and it often goes something like this: “Show me how to make my children my priority always. Help me to be able to put other things aside so my focus isn’t always pulling me away from my family. Help me be able to balance the things I want for myself with the things I want for my children. Help me to know that I am the world to my children and there’s no better role for me than being their mom. Help me to be the mom I want them to remember. That’s worth repeating: HELP ME TO BE THE MOM I WANT THEM TO REMEMBER. Happy New Mothering Year!

IS IT SEPARATION ANXIETY? Is it possible for a child to have such severe separation anxiety that he throws up?

Anxiety is real for kids.

5-year-olds do it, too!

My son, now 8, has suffered with anxiety/separation anxiety since he was 4 years old. He was eventually diagnosed with severe generalized anxiety disorder. He is also home schooled because of his anxiety, which stems from everything or nothing at all.

I’m actually going through that now with my 5-year-old daughter.

Comes from children who are smothered by parents. Nope! Children don’t need to be smothered by parents or this will happen. When they cry, let them! Don’t hold them all the time, let them explore! And the children who do throw a fit when you try to leave ... don’t give in! They will be OK. Turn around, walk away and let whoever you’re leaving them with comfort them! Don’t enable the process. It’s normal. I have a 10-month-old baby girl, and she started the separation anxiety at 3 months. When we go to any family gatherings together and people want to try and hold her it doesn’t happen but for a brief minute, then she starts crying. Either her dad or I have to take her because we cannot stand to hear her cry like that. We are the ones taking care of her every day, so she knows right away where

her comfort zone is. There’s nothing wrong with a child being cherished and loved like that. That shows they have feelings and they want to know they are loved back as well. In due time, as in finally, she has now come around to getting used to people, but it still depends on the person. She’s independent and doesn’t want them all up in her face and space. And at 10 months ... well, she already has it going on ... how can someone say not to hold them when they cry? That doesn’t make any sense to me. You are the only one they know that is there to make them feel safe. Why take that away from them? I will never walk away when my daughter is crying. She’s my one and only, and I can’t see it any other way. Heidi Netherton

Wicked Plants Bloom at Science Center Three exhibits at Adventure Science Center are closing this month — Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss (Jan. 8), All Aboard for Trains! (Jan. 16) and Nikon’s Small World (Jan. 29). Their departure makes way for a new exhibit created by the North Carolina Arboretum opening Saturday, Jan. 28. Wicked Plants invites kids to discover the evildoers of the plant world that can be found in their own backyards and beyond. The interactive exhibit explores some of the world’s most diabolical plants without the risk of intoxication, addiction, dismemberment or other dangers. Wicked Plants presents four main areas: Warning Signals (plants that defend themselves with odors, bold patterns, noises, etc.), Maim Your Brain (plants with brainaltering qualities), Survival (how plants adapt to threats in their environment) and Stinky Stations (take a whiff of plants with foul odors). The Bug’s version, directed by Santiago Sosa, is re-imagined as a love letter to John Hughes’ early ‘80s teen comedies. The production runs March 9 - 11 with a possible hold-over weekend March 16 - 18. The Bug seeks 11 boys and 11 girls ages 10 - 18, and auditions take place Jan. 13 14 with callbacks on Jan. 16. Audition requirements include memorizing a selected speech from the script. Cold readings will take place at callbacks if needed. There is a $100 tuition fee for those who are cast (financial aid is available), and rehearsals take place Feb. 5 - March 8 at the following times based on cast availability: Mon/Wed/Fri 4 - 8 p.m., Tue/Thu 7 - 9 p.m., Sat 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sun 2 - 6 p.m. March 4 - 8 are mandatory rehearsals. Tips for Choosing a Residential Camp for Kids Now’s the time to start planning your child’s 2017 summer fun! Here’s help to get you started.

eah, summer’s six months away, but that doesn’t mean you should wait until spring to figure out what your children will be doing and where they’ll be going. If a residential summer camp is in the cards for your kids, NOW is the time to start looking at the options and making decisions. The American Camp Association (ACA; acacamps.org) says most children are ready for an away-from-home camp experience by the time they are 7 or 8 years old. When you’re selecting a camp, keep in mind your child’s interests and personality. When you start gathering info, include your child by showing him pictures, brochures and online videos from each camp. Ask for his input as much as possible — after all, it’s going to be his camp experience. The ACA recommends asking the following questions when considering a residential camp: • Do you want a traditional camp offering a variety of experience or a specialized camp focusing on only one area of interest?

• How long do you want your child to remain at camp? One week or the entire summer? • How near or far do you prefer the camp to be from home? • Single gender or co-ed? • Does your child have any special needs to consider? • How can you stay in touch with your child? Are phone calls, mail and e-mail permitted? • How much does the camp cost?

VISIT & ASK, ASK, ASK

Once you narrow down your search, the ACA suggests opening a conversation with the directors of each camp you’re considering. Get to know the director through phone calls, correspondence and most ideally, a personal visit. Here are key things to ask: • What is the camp’s philosophy and program emphasis? • What is the camp director’s background? • What training do counselors receive? • What is the counselor-to-camper ratio? • What are the ages of the counselors?

• What are desired qualities in camp staff? • What percentage of the counselors returned from last year? • How are behavioral and disciplinary problems handled? • How does the camp handle homesickness? • What about references? Be sure to get the references from the camps you’re considering. Talking to families who have first-hand experience is the best way to learn the true colors of the camp.

CREATING THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT By Kiera Ashford

Safety's first when it comes to newborn sleep. Be on top of what you need to know.

aby is on his back and in a sleep sack with no blanket ... but the air is cold, and will he be warm enough? New parent concerns are endless sometimes. Is the room warm enough? What if he spits up in his sleep? Where should he sleep? When it comes to getting your little one to sleep comfortably and safely during the night, you can be a worrywart or you can be up on the current research and do the best you can. Here's help on safe sleep topics to guide you toward a good night's rest.

SAFETY FIRST What kind of environment are you providing for your infant? For instance, what's the temperature of the room, how's the mattress, lighting and sound? All of these things contribute to the amount of time Baby will sleep. Before you even place your baby to sleep in his crib or bassinet, be sure of the firmness of the mattress. “Babies should sleep on a firm mattress made for infant cribs," says Anna Morad, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics and director of the newborn nursery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "They should never be placed to sleep on a pillow top, featherbed or futon type mattress,” she adds. This reduces the risk of suffocation. Another note on the mattress is to keep it level. Many parents think it's a good idea to keep Baby at an incline to reduce choking should he spit up in the middle of the night. However, Morad cautions parents against this practice. “Mattresses should not be propped even if the baby is spitting up,” she adds. “Talk to your provider about other ways to help the spitting up.” Remember, too, that when you place Baby to sleep in his crib or bassinet, remove all loose sheets and blankets, pillows, toys, etc. “Bumpers and blankets are not recommended so cribs should and will look bare,” says Morad. If you notice Baby is hot while sleeping (but not feverish), chances are the room is too warm. “We usually recommend 70 degrees Fahrenheit for healthy babies, but if you have a low birthweight or pre-term baby, then you should ask your healthcare provider if a higher temperature is appropriate,” says Morad.

If adjusting the thermostat conflicts with the temperature of the rest of the house, consider using a portable fan or turning on the ceiling fan — which is great for air circulation. “Ceiling fans are thought to be helpful in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) prevention, and the AAP encourages their use,” adds Morad. Not only that, but some parents find that Baby likes the white noise fans make. However, if you learn Baby sleeps better with a little noise, you should be mindful of what you use.

THE ABCs of SAFE SLEEP: A: Make sure the infant is ALONE in his space. B: Make sure the infant is on his BACK. C: Make sure the infant is in a CRIB. “Be careful with sound machines, per a study published in Pediatrics in 2014,” cautions Morad. “There is concern about infant hearing damage from some of the machines on the market. If you choose to use a sound machine, place it on the lowest volume and as far from the crib as possible,” she adds.

SLEEP IN HIS OWN SPACE Now that you have his room perfect, why are you plopping him down next to you? Think twice about that. “Infants should sleep in their own space but in the room with their parents for the first six months,” says Morad. This supports what the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says: "There is evidence that sleeping in the parents’ room but on a separate surface decreases the risk of SIDS by as much as 50 percent. In addition, this

babypages arrangement is most likely to prevent suffocation, strangulation and entrapment that may occur when the infant is sleeping in the adult bed." If you find yourself falling asleep on the couch or in the chair while holding your baby, be sure you're in a safe position to do so.

WAKEFUL NIGHTS

If you've tried rocking Baby to sleep to no avail and the only thing that works is a ride in the car or in a swing ... go for it! However, it's not a good idea to leave him in his seat or swing once asleep. According to the AAP, "Sitting devices, such as car seats, strollers, swings, infant carriers and infant slings, are not recommended for routine sleep in the hospital or at home, particularly for young infants." So, as tempting as it may be to not move Baby once he's asleep in one of these devices, take the initiative to move him anyway for his own safety. The AAP adds, "Infants who are younger than 4 months are particularly at risk, because they may assume positions that can create a risk of suffocation or airway obstruction or may not be able to move out of a potentially asphyxiating situation." And, you know those trending pacifiers with a toy attached? He can do without that, too. Think of it as a stuffed toy and not just a pacifier. Morad urges parents to not use that type of pacifier while Baby's sleeping, but says, “Regular pacifiers are encouraged after breastfeeding is going well.” There's a little safety measure you can put in place for yourself, too, when it comes to Baby's room — night lights. “While night lights are generally not needed for infants, they can be useful for parents in the middle of the night to provide care for their baby without tipping over furniture,” suggests Morad.
