7 Easy Steps to Gardening With Kids
Keeping hope in your heart matters. Maryiah and Brittany know. After learning that her daughter, Maryiah, had a form of congenital heart disease called hypoplastic left heart syndrome and a genetic disorder (Turner Syndrome), Brittany was told by several providers that her daughter’s best hope for survival was Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Not one to ever give up hope, she worked with the experienced team at Children’s Hospital during and after pregnancy to ensure that Maryiah had the best chance possible. With comprehensive teams in neonatal intensive care, cardiology, cardiac surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), transplant and more, Children‘s Hospital pediatric specialists skillfully guided Maryiah’s health care journey. According to Brittany, they also became family. Several surgeries and a heart transplant later, perseverance and expertise prevailed. Today, Maryiah is an active and happy 5-year-old, becoming the best Maryiah she can be–her mother’s dream all along. DAD BEAT By Michael W. Aldrich
Bye-bye, Separation Anxiety
S
tarting preschool is a major milestone, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with lots of crying, uncertainty and heel digging. For us, day one of dropping off our 3-year-old at his new preschool program did not go great. He knew something was up as soon as the car stopped in the drop-off line. The wailing started. But who could blame him? He spent the first three years of his life learning a comfortable routine and has no idea what this place is, who these people are or if Mommy and Daddy are even coming back. Kicking and screaming, we got him out of the car and into school, as he clung to his bear the whole time. My heart hurt, but I knew it was a good thing. Separation anxiety is real. First days of anything new can be tough for little ones — tough for parents, too, but it’s so necessary for their development. We went with the “rip the band-aid” technique with a cold break. Fortunately, his new teacher sent us a picture message within the hour of our little guy playing with blocks. Whew! We felt a huge relief and felt better. The next few drop-off’s were increasingly less traumatic. By the end of the week, he was saying, “Bye-bye, Daddy” and reaching up his hands toward his new teacher, entering the building with a smile on his face. What a turnaround! The lesson? IT GETS EASIER. There are definitely a few tricks that help with separation anxiety those first few drop-off’s. First, create a goodbye ritual. This provides comfort and familiarity, and could be anything from a special hug or handshake to a, “See you later, alligator!” For us, it’s the classic high five and kiss-on-the-forehead combo. Once you’ve said your goodbyes, it’s best to skedaddle so that your child doesn’t become preoccupied by your presence. Next, bring a comforting object. A little reminder of home may seem like small stuff to you, but it can provide a real sense of security to kids in an unfamiliar environment. A favorite stuffed animal or blankie, even a beloved book or sippy cup does the trick. Finally, when you pick your child up at the end of the day, reinforce the idea that you came back, just like you said you would. This way, each day’s drop-off won’t feel like you’re both starting over again with the upsetting goodbyes. So, if you have a kid who’s starting something new, just rip that band-aid. It’s good for them — and good for you, too. Remember, it gets easier.

FAMILY
adventuring BY NOAH GARRISON DAY
DOOR COUNTY, WISCONSIN
the greatest vacation spot you’ve never heard of
O
K, so maybe you’ve heard of it. If my wife hadn’t been from Wisconsin, there’s a good chance I never would have, but I’m glad that’s not the case. In our Middle Tennessee bubble, we’ve got our headliners we flock to each summer: Destin/30A, Orlando,The Smokies, Hilton Head … the list goes on. Door County, Wisconsin needs to be added to that list. I was lucky enough to take a three-day extravaganza to Door County (DC) last August and I am convinced after being there that there’s nothing I can write that will truly serve Door County justice. CULTURAL TRADITIONS First, there are no big high-rise condominiums and there’s not even one chain restaurant north of the county’s southernmost and largest town, Sturgeon Bay. Everything is locally run and locally owned. Door County moves at its own pace and invites everyone there to do the same. Just as well, DC also invites all to take part in historic cultural traditions, like their famous Door County Fish Boils. Those are a must-do! Secondly: Yes, it’s a county, but it’s unlike any county you’ve ever been to. Its geographic location between the massive Lake Michigan on the west and
12 march 2022
(the) Green Bay on the east gives it the feel of a European summer beach haven (some people have referred to DC as the Cape Cod of the midwest). These waters help to create some of the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises you’ve ever seen. During the dog days of summer when the weather is 90+ and humid in Middle Tennessee, the weather in DC is low 70’s to low 80’s and … not humid. The county is big – but not overwhelmingly so. There are more than 10 distinct villages in DC – each one unique in its own way and offering a different Door County experience from the next. WHAT TO EXPECT Door County’s timelessness is picturesque with endless historic farms, homes, barns and cute spots like Anderson Dock. Expect to be amazed by the sights, sounds and the abundance of green and multicolored farmland. You’ll be wondering — just as I was — how you never heard of this wonderful place. THINGS TO DO On top of the pleasant sights and scenes, you and your family can do a multitude of activities: zipline at Rowley’s Bay Resort; do a guided scenic kayak tour with Door County Kayak Tours; take a scenic cruise or charter with Shoreline (my personal
favorite experience); enjoy breathtaking hikes in Peninsula State Park; relax on family beaches like Nicolet Beach in Peninsula State Park and literally SO. MUCH. MORE. There are also soothing spas and great shopping options, too! TIME TO EAT Door County offers no shortage of delicious and entertaining food options for the family. Wilson’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim has been offering classic burgers and the most gargantuan ice cream sundaes to families since 1906! Grandma’s Swedish Bakery has been making the same delicious pastries for more than 50 years. Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik is the only US restaurant with a patent that allows goats (yes, goats) to graze the grass on its roof while you eat in or outside. PC Junction offers great food and is a homerun for the kids as all orders are served via train – yes train! Adults will appreciate One Barrel Brewing or Alexander’s of Door County for more of a romantic sunset dinner. ALL IN ALL: DC is complete with 53 public swimming beaches on 300 miles of shoreline, 11 historic lighthouses, five state parks, more than seven local wineries and breweries, 11 golf courses,
nashvilleparent.com
2,500 acres of cherry orchards, more than 100 art galleries/ museums/music venues, more than 50 family owned hotels and some of the greatest bakeries in the USA like Scaturo’s in Sturgeon Bay. DC provides a beautiful space to relax, enjoy the people and escape the go-go-go mentality of everyday life. Upon arrival, you’ll quickly find that there are endless opportunities for both yourself and your family as well as an invitation to just … be. GETTING THERE & STAYING • Fly into Green Bay (GRB), rent a car and drive an hour to DC • Fly into Milwaukee (MKE), rent a car and drive two-and-a-half hours to DC • Fly into Chicago (ORD or MDW), rent a car and drive three-and-a-half hours to DC • A Road trip from Nashville can be done in around 13 hours There are countless places to stay in Door County, ranging from rental homes to hotels to camping sites. For more information, visit Destination Door County (doorcounty.com) to help you plan your great family adventuring. Noah Day is an avid outdoorsman always on the hunt for a good adventure. PARENTING Days at home with preschoolers can be long and tiring, but good ideas will keep your little one active.
BY JOYCE HERZOG
FUN, SMART ACTIVITIES FOR
PRESCHOOLERS Days at home with little ones can be long and tiring unless you have a creative bag of tricks. And so ... you’re welcome.
D
ays at home with preschoolers can seem long and tiring, but these ideas are sure to bring a smile to your face. Most older preschoolers (ages 3 – 5) are ready for learning! They’ll be developing skills such as speaking, drawing, tracing, coloring, copying, writing, counting, building, jumping, riding and cutting and pasting. They seem to absorb information in a flash and love repeating it frequently. Let’s fill their lives with wholesome sounds, sights and activities. It is important to stock your home with supplies to pull out in a moment to keep those little ones busy. Some possibilities are blocks, beads, puzzles, counters, beanbags, play dough and preschool books. Don’t keep all of those things in sight all the time! Have a cupboard that you alone can access; keep it closed in a childproof way so that you can get in quickly but the little ones cannot. You may prefer to have five to seven “daily boxes” or large, lidded containers that hold a variety of playthings. Stack them in a corner and shuffle through them day by day. Once a month, shuffle the contents and add a new toy to keep the fun fresh. Now that you have a strong activity base, let’s get on to FUN times.
18 march 2022
nashvilleparent.com
1. Water Play is a wonderful joy for
most kids; enjoy it at bath-time year round, or use a small dish of water or even a pool outdoors on a warm day. They’ll enjoy plastic spoons, pitchers, squeezy toys, sponges and containers of all sizes. Stay near while the splashing and pouring goes on.
2. What’s Hiding? A plastic reclosable container about the size of a loaf of bread can be a wonderful reusable toy. Fill it with rice, cornmeal or sand then bury and hide 10 small child-safe toys or implements in it. Using a timer, give your child a minute to search for the toys. Next, lead your child to pour from one container to another. 3. Rolling Wheels Most children
enjoy rolling toys. To make it more fun, lean a board against a step to form a ramp. Your child will spend hours racing toys down the ramp while you water the garden or cut the lawn. Provide empty cans or containers; basically anything that rolls will work.
4. Tracing Provide a dull pencil and tracing paper with some basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, etc.) drawn darkly on white paper. Have your child trace these simple shapes at first (circle, square, etc.). Then have them enhance the circle by turning it into a drawing of a face or turning the square into a house.
5. Spelling Game Glue stick-
ers (dog, cat, tree, box, book, etc.) to a 4” x 6” index card. Use a Sharpie to print the word for the picture (in lowercase letters) beneath it. Have your child use (magnetic, block, sponge, stamp, etc.) letters to spell the word that you have written.
6. Matching Words Use the picture cards with words (#5). Print the same word again on an additional card. Have your child match the word card to the picture/word card.
and encourage your little ones to put the same “feeling on their face.” Talk about how the emotions feel.
10. Food Preparation Let the little
ones help make lunch by tearing lettuce for salad, spreading peanut butter or jam on a thin half-bagel and/or slicing a banana with a plastic knife for dessert (sprinkles on top).
11. What’s Inside Use one sock or a
dozen non-matching ones; any size will do. Put something in the sock and ask your child to identify it by feel.
12. Bubble Blowers come in all
kinds of shapes and produce wonderful results. When you run out, replace with your own homemade solution (one cup water, two tablespoons light Karo syrup plus four tablespoons dishwashing liquid. Stir to combine well.
13. What’s Missing? Show and have your child name two items. Hide one. Ask which one is missing. Build to removing three items from 10 shown and named.
14. Guesstimating: Have your child take turns predicting how many (beans, rocks, marbles, etc.) will fit in a (bottle cap, cup, basket, small box, jar, etc.).
15. First Counting Game: Roll a
large die or spin a spinner. Name the number rolled. Count that number of items. Put them in a large container. Cheer a lot, clap and encourage your child.
16. Dress Up! Fill a trunk or a large
cardboard box with scrounged extra clothing. Include hats, and scarves, purses, bags and shoes, as well as skirts, shirts, aprons and whatever you can find. Kids will have hours of fun trying things on and making new outfits. Keep the camera and camcorder handy!
SENSORY ACTIVITIES It can get messy to help your child engage with their senses — but it helps them to engage in the world!
• CREATE A SENSORY BIN Fill it with leaves, rocks, sand, pasta, etc. • PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD Twist noodles, smear yogurt, smash beans. • CREATE SOUND TUBES Fill it an empty paper towel roll & fill with dried beans then secure ends with duct tape. • BALANCE BEAM Tape lines on the floor and challenge your child to walk the line.
8. In and Out Obtain a hula-
• OUTDOOR MUD KITCHEN Set up a small area outside and give your child pots, pans, water and a mixing spoon.
hoop for each child and show them how to jump in and out of it. Later use it as a “safe space” for the child to sit in while playing or listening.
9. Make a Face Use a safe
An impromptu parade is always fun. Line up and march around the house or yard. Use costumes, decorated tricycles, bicycles or pets on a leash to make it even more fun!
18. Make Play Dough
7. Jump the Rope Lay a rope on the ground and have the children take turns jumping over it.
17. Who can resist a parade?
• FROZEN TOYS Simply freeze some miniature toys into ice. Let your child manipulate until they are free.

Play Dough Recipe 1 cup flour 1 cup water ½ cup salt 1 T. vegetable oil 2 t. cream of tartar Food coloring Stir all ingredients together in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until the mixture pulls away from the pan (or microwave on high for 3 - 5 minutes stirring every minute until it is too hard to stir). Knead for a few minutes on a dry surface. (Be careful! It is HOT!) Store in an airtight container. This play dough is even better than the store-bought kind. or many families, getting the yearly garden underway is the surest sign that spring is here. Whether you have a green thumb — or prefer to stick with the farmer’s market — growing your own food in a garden can be a great experience for you and the kids. You can do it in seven can-do steps.
Step One: Measure Your Space
Before your garden dreams come to fruition, you must measure and evaluate your space. This will become the foundation of your garden plan. Get out a sheet of paper and measure the available area that you are willing to devote to a garden. Monitor the amount of sunlight that the space gets throughout the day and note that information on your garden plan. Most fruit and vegetable plants need six to eight hours of direct sunlight in order to produce the best results. If you have some shady spaces, make sure to identify them on your plan so that you can select appropriate plants for those areas. (please turn the page)

7 STEPS TO A GARDEN Keep the size of the garden, or at least the children’s portion of it, manageable so as to not overwhelm them. They will be much more apt to help if their plot is sized just for them rather than feeling like they are expected to weed an acre of various crops.
Step Two: Decide if Containers Belong in Your Garden
Containers can extend your garden space and, particularly in urban areas, will transform some previously unusable space into productive parts of your garden. If you elect to use containers, identify their dedicated space on your garden plan. There are many plant varieties bred specifically for container gardening. Be sure to seek them out if you decide to use containers for best results.
Step Three: Choose your Plants
Take your children along when choosing fruits and vegetables for the garden. They will be more likely to get excited about being involved if they are part of the selection process. Getting a few extra fresh veggies into their meals will become a reality if they are growing and harvesting a crop that they are excited about. Pore over the seed catalogs and descriptions, talk about favorite fruits and vegetables and try a few new ones from the grocery store before you start your garden. Some items you will want to start inside or purchase as plants, make a note of these on your garden plan. When the time comes to buy seeds, take your kids to the store or place your order online.
Step Four: Gather your Tools
With kids, it is always best to have the materials on hand before beginning a big project. Younger kids may lose interest quickly and won’t want to spend precious time pulling together the gardening tools, finding the fertilizer, and digging out the gardening gloves before you start. If you do, they will be gone before you dig the first hole. Collect all of the supplies before you start and you can hit the ground running. Get your kids their own small tools and gardening gloves to work with. Having their own tool along with their own small space in the garden will give them ownership over the tasks associated with gardening in that area.
Step Five: Plant
You have your plan, you have your tools and spring is springing everywhere you look. Now is the time to get those seeds and plants into the ground. Once the last threat of frost passes, pick a weekend day and get cracking. Turn over the soil, get the sticks and leaves from the winter out of the way and show your kids where everything belongs in the garden. Then turn them loose. Let them get dirty, it’s part of the process. Keep your kids’ attention span by having lots of options for them. Digging holes is something they never seem to tire of.
Step Six: Maintain
Planning and planting takes up the bulk of the time required for successful gardening, but setting up systems for maintenance

will keep things tidy and prolific throughout the growing season. Talk to your kids about weeding and why it is important and set up a schedule. If everyone is responsible for a certain area, the chore becomes more manageable. Be sure to protect your new plants from bugs and other wildlife. Nothing is as discouraging as growing a beautiful garden and having it be eaten before you can harvest it. Fences and repellents can be employed to keep your garden free of pests. One natural repellant that works well is a mixture of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Make sure to inject some fun into your gardening adventures. Take a time to be silly and encourage your child’s imagination. Have your toddler take a daily look for Jack on the beanstalk as your climbing green beans grow.
Step Seven: Harvest
When your plants start producing, monitor them daily. For many varieties of fruits and vegetables, the more you pick, the more the plant will produce. If you need to, look up what the finished product of the seeds you planted should look like when ripe (that way you will know what to look for). Whether it becomes an acre of bountiful harvest or just some cucumbers and tomatoes for your summertime salads, get out there and make some great family memories. Beth Davis is a writer and mom. She and her husband garden every summer with their four kids.

Day Camp 101 Top tips for preparing your first-time camper (and you) for day camp.
W
ith only a couple of months before the first day of Middle Tennessee day camps, you want to make sure you prepare your child for the experience before the first day arrives. You can start working on a successful day camp experience for your child now. Here are tips for getting your first-time camper excited about camp (and maybe you, too!):
EXPECTATIONS Talking about camp in the weeks leading up to summer will build your child’s enthusiasm about camp. The camp your child will attend will provide all of the fun, but you can build those expectations prior to arrival. Learn about the camp programs you are interested in for your child so you can discuss it with him so he knows what to expect. MIddle Tennessee day camps are well represented by their
websites, so make sure you understand their differences especially if you will be sending your child to a couple of different camps.
SUCCESSFUL ACTIVITIES FOR DAY CAMP If you are sending your child to day camp, your child probably has had positive experiences away from home with friends, classes and nursery/pre-K/school. If not, make sure you schedule some activities and time away from your child before camp. You want to make sure this time away and separation are successful and that your child is ready to go away to camp for an extended period.
BUS PREPARATION For children heading to day camp for the first time, it may be the first time they take the bus. Talk about what the ride will be like and (please turn the page)
nashvilleparent.com
march 2022 25
Summer Planning what your child can expect. Be able to tell your child where you will go to meet the bus and where you will be when it’s time to pick them up.
PACK FOR CAMP WITH YOUR CHILD Discuss what items will be needed for camp and pack together. Your child will feel more secure if they know what they need for camp and you can use the time packing together to talk with your child about how much fun camp is going to be. Make sure to look at the camp packing list and respect the items the camp asks you to leave at home such as cell phones and iPads.
VISIT WEBSITES & SPEAK TO OTHER PARENTS Visit the camp’s website together and look at the activity list, photos and the camp map to give your child a feel for what camp will be like. You can request family contact details of campers who live in your area or who will be in your child(ren)’s group.
DON’T MAKE PICK UP DEALS Before camp begins, let your child know you are confident in their ability to have a wonderful summer camp experience. Don’t make pick-up deals with your child before they go to camp. You are sending your child the message that you don’t feel they will be successful at camp – and once you say you will pick them up early, it makes the camp’s job a lot harder. Your child WILL have fun at camp but only if they are AT camp.
QUESTIONS Ask your child if tey have any questions about camp. Keep an open dialogue about what camp will be like with your child so they feel comfortable about going to camp for the first time.
CALL THE CAMP DIRECTOR If you sense your child is nervous about camp, you can always call the camp director and ask for their advice. The camp director has a lot of experience with first time campers and will be able to offer you some ways which you can help your child.
10 Tips for a Successful Day Camp Experience 1. ON HOT DAYS, SEND YOUR CHILD
TO CAMP WITH A BOTTLE OF FROZEN WATER. As the morning wears on, the water will melt and provide cool refreshment for your child. Spray bottles are great, too.
2. APPLY SUNSCREEN AND BUG SPRAY before your child leaves home. Consider sending a hat if it’s a very sunny day. 3. DRESS YOUR CHILD FOR CAMP.
Kids often want to dress themselves but you may need to intervene. Your child should be dressed for comfort, safety and appropriate temperatures. Opt for tennis shoes on the feet or any closedtoe sturdy water shoes.
4. LABEL EVERYTHING. Any item
brought to camp by your child shold have his name on it plus a phone number. This helps to avoid confusion if kids bring identical items.
5. LEAVE VALUABLE ITEMS BEHIND. Your child should be engaging in camp activities rather than playing with electronics. If these items are brought, they may be confiscated and returned at the end of the day in hopes that your child gets the message.
6. MEDICATIONS. The most important place to communicate about your child’s medication needs is on your camper’s
SOURCE: American Camp Association.

nashvilleparent.com
physical form. Review each camp’s medication policies before signing up for camps. Camps look out for the physical and emotional needs of each child, so the more information you provide on their camp physical, the better equipped they will be.
7. EMERGENCY CONTACT. Don’t write
down an emergency contact and then surprise the emergency contact. Be sure your designated person knows you have written their name down. Every year camps have situations where people didn’t know.
8. READ MATERIALS. If you know
what to expect and what is expected of you, things will run much smoother. Most camps have a weekly schedule so parents know about upcoming activities. Talk with your child about the activities planned. If they cannot participate because of health reasons, make sure you (not your child!) inform the camp.
9. STAY POSITIVE. Your leadership makes or breaks the experiences your child will have while away from you at camp. 10. LISTEN TO YOUR CHILD. After a busy day at camp, be sure to check in with your child. Listen to their stories, paying close attention to friends and counselors they mention. Ask to be introduced. In other words, be a part of your child’s experience!
