DAY BYDAY This IS the Silver Lining

T

onight there’s an abundance of whooping and laughter coming from the Man Cave — the basement decked out with all-things sports and good times. I’m trying to sleep upstairs, but my pillow is a rock. I keep turning and wrestling; I’m just not myself. I get up and pad to the top of the stairs, our sweet dog Bella at my heels. Her soft, brown eyes question me. She always wants to go along. Another loud burst of male laughter explodes from down below. My three boys are playing NHL on XBox, and carrying on like it’s Christmas. It’s a warm and hearty sound though, and I love it. So instead of being their killjoy, I walk down a few steps to look out the tall window. It’s cloudy out there tonight. It’s been rainy and murky for days, almost as though the sun doesn’t know its way out. Many times I’ve stood here and seen brilliant stars shining against the black, but not tonight. Maybe tomorrow. Isn’t that what we’re all saying now? Or inwardly hoping? Maybe tomorrow everything will be all better? Moms and dads work overtime to make everything “all better” for their kids — only this time, it’s not easy. This isn’t mending a boo-boo or slapping together peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or even shampooing a squirmy toddler’s hair. This is hurry up and pretend like you’ve got this because your kids do not deserve to have their whole world torn apart. So short of letting your children destroy your home, it IS time to live a little as a family and then live a little more. If you can’t bring yourself to sit down for a game of Quirkle, what CAN you do? Introduce your kids to the music of your teenage years? Bust out some sweet moves? Come on, let your hair down a little bit — at least enough for your 10-year-old to braid it for you. I mean, all of those times when you complained that there wasn’t enough time for the family to live like a family. Come on. Here it is. It’s here. The great, big, fat GIVE IN to life together IS HERE. So I think I can sleep now. I already said my goodnights and I love yous hours ago and ... wait a minute ... yes, the stampede downstairs seems to have subsided. We all have our kids home this month, and we all need some structure or we will go out of our minds. But in between the shoulds and musts, seek out your silver lining. It’s right there in your home, with your kids. This won’t last forever, so give into it — and let’er rip!

PARENTING BY SHANNON DEAN

SHARING THE EMOTIONAL NEEDS OF FAMILY Lengthy days at home and the unpredictability about what’s next means parents and kids must support each other at home.

S

ociologists often call the management of family duties “worry work,” and the person who does it, the “designated worrier.” For years, that designated worrier was seen as the mom. But with parents in flux about work stability and with the mounting needs of ever-present family, that just doesn’t cut it right now. Both parents need gigantic reserves of emotional energy to stay on top of the needs of their family — and the kids need to step up, too. Meanwhile, the invisible, emotional labor

needed to support a modern family often remains gender-specific ... and still does to a degree. A recent report from the United Nations found that women still do 2.6 times more unpaid work than men, including unseen tasks like school carpooling, caring for elderly relatives, planning holidays, staying on top of the family schedule and supporting family harmony. As a result, some family responsibilities remain so unbalanced that mothers risk burnout. WHAT IS EMOTIONAL LABOR? Although many tasks classified as emotional labor address a family’s emotional

and physical well-being, any administrative effort that contributes to a well-run household falls into this category. Because many moms are the emotional center of the home, they are expected to be fully available when family members are sick, troubled, or stressed. Mom is also the invisible elf who ensures that everyone has clothing that fits, food to eat, and a schedule that works. Emotional labor often extends far beyond the immediate family. Moms not only remember issues and occasions important to those residing under her roof, but she is also responsible for people who are important to her family, like her in-laws, her chil(please turn the page)

PARENTING dren’s teachers, and her spouse’s coworkers. When you add these invisible tasks to a full schedule, it’s no surprise that many mothers feel exhausted even before the second shift of emotional labor begins. Understandably, this fatigue can lead to resentment and frustration. No one notices invisible labor until it goes undone, at which time moms can be criticized or made to feel guilty. Even worse, many parents feel uncomfortable outsourcing these unrelenting tasks since they are so closely related to the family. Additionally, the unappreciated nature of emotional labor can cause a mother to withdraw when her family needs her the most. According to Amelia Nagoski, Ph.D., author of Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle (Ballantine; 2020), parental burnout can lead to decreased empathy and a dwindling sense of accomplishment. Eventually, an overwhelmed parent may shut down due to a belief that “nothing you do makes any difference,” she explains.

THE BENEFITS OF SHARED RESPONSIBILITY Moms are the obvious beneficiaries of shared responsibility, but all family members win in a home that values equality. Data published in The Journal of Marriage and Family, suggests that men who take on more household tasks enjoy increased physical intimacy in their marriages. Fathers who share emotional labor set an important example for their children, particularly daughters. Research conducted by the Association for Psychological Science found that fathers who embraced household responsibilities raised daughters more likely to pursue higher paying careers. “How fathers treat their domestic duties appears to play a unique gatekeeper role,” explains psychology researcher Alyssa Croft.

HOW TO APPROACH A PARTNER Don’t assume that renegotiating emotional labor is just another form of work, making it easier to do these tasks yourself. Although it’s tempting to believe that mothers are naturally better at soothing school dramas, buying gifts, and making sure that the house is well-stocked, these assumptions are untrue. Any family member can learn by doing. Fortunately, most spouses want an equal

18 april 2020

partnership, but are either unaware of this inequality or are unsure of how to do their fair share. Because these misunderstandings contribute to imbalance, approach your partner (and kids) with the goal of making them aware that you’re swamped. Be clear that you are asking for shared responsibility, not help (which implies that the task in question is solely your job.) Don’t wait for a full-blown crisis and acknowledge the contributions already made so that defensiveness is kept at bay. It may help to explain that this arrangement will benefit your entire family. After all, you’re modeling the skills that your children will one day use to run their own households. Once you calmly ask which items your mate and kids are able and willing to take on, know that everybody does tasks differently and there really is no ONE WAY. Relinquish control if you want support. Hovering over someone who is trying to share responsibility is continuing the cycle of imbalance. It is very common to assume that mom has a firm lock on emotional labor, while dad is only a helpmate. This outlook must change, says Gemma Harley, author of Fed Up: Emotional Labor, Women, and the Way Forward, (HarperOne; 2018) because it “sets up women for an overwhelming dive into the deep waters of emotional labor but also inhibits men from growing and stepping fully into the role of parent,” she says.

CLARIFY ESSENTIAL TASKS The value of emotional labor is immeasurable because it ensures that those we love feel secure and cared for. However, not every task is essential. Lightening your load may mean dropping obligations that no longer serve you or your family. Ask yourself what you do out of obligation rather than out of necessity or joy. Keeping only joyful and essential tasks means that you can lovingly offer emotional labor because you don’t feel undervalued, overwhelmed, and used. Harley says sharing invisible labor “gives all of us a chance to live fuller and more authentic lives.” Even better, when we share these responsibilities, we allow our loved ones to create their own systems, and their own deep connections. Shannon Dean is a freelance writer and the mother of two. She enjoys writing about the health and well-being of families.

nashvilleparent.com

5 Tips For

Sharing Emotional Labor:

1. Don’t Expect Your Family To “Just Know.”

Many women are frustrated with a partner and children who don’t understand what needs doing or how to do it. There’s an expectation that tasks related to love and parenting should come naturally, but it’s possible that your family is unaware rather than neglectful.

2. Make Emotional Labor Visible

Put a list of the week’s tasks in a high traffic area (like the kitchen.) Ask each participating family member to place his name beside each task he plans to complete. Cross out completed items and encourage your family to do the same.

3. Don’t Get Pulled Into Someone Else’s Responsibility

It is very common for a family member to feel incompetent or uncomfortable when attempting something that you’ve always handled. It’s fine to offer advice, but resist the urge to jump into a task that isn’t yours. Allow your loved one to figure it out.

4. Sometimes Done Is Better Than Perfect

Accepting shared responsibility means relinquishing control. Sometimes, you must lower your standards and know that done is good enough. For example, your partner’s best attempt at thank you notes might be a bit sloppy, but at least they are finished.

5. Acknowledge A Job WellDone

You know first hand how frustrating it is when no one notices or acknowledges your constant efforts. Positive reinforcement is a great way to ensure that your family willingly and lovingly continues to share responsibilities.

PLAY IT COOL, PARENTS Disciplining children doesn’t have to be a “heat of the moment” swat, or some form of punishment. Current research says it’s NOT healthy to yell and spank and lose it on your kids. It will be much, much better if you learn about positive discipline. BY SUSAN DAY

21

PARENTING

A

toddler has just spent a good 20 minutes putting his favorite stickers all over his bed’s new wooden headboard. He thinks his work is beautiful. But they are very sticky stickers and even when he tries to pull one up the paper tears, leaving glue behind. Oh, and now Mommy is here at the door, staring hard and she looks really, really upset. She actually looks mean and the toddler is scared. Mommy wants nothing more than to give his cute, little behind a nice, firm smack. Only there’s just one problem. Mommy’s smart. And she knows that swatting won’t solve anything. What to do? “Disciplining children is not easy, but it is an essential part of raising a child,” says Patti Williams, M.D. a pediatrician with Brentwood Pediatrics. “There is also good evidence that punishment by yelling or spanking can increase the risk of negative behavioral, psychosocial and emotional outcomes in children,” Williams adds. So Mommy can forget the regret and guilt SHE may feel later if she ends up spanking her little one; the toddler will bear the brunt of her misguided lesson, even if she thinks he’s learned from it. But what else could Mommy have done in the moment? When she was seething? When she wanted to spit nails and tan his little hyde — that new bed cost plenty! She could have, after opening the door to discover her toddler with the stickers matted everywhere, taken a deep breath and 1) paused to gather herself; 2) Calmly walked to her child, placed him in her lap and said something like, “Ryland, Mommy is so upset that you put the stickers on your new bed. The bed is not where we put stickers.” Ryland, for his part, now knows that he did something “wrong,” and that Mommy is unhappy. He’s scared, though, so he freezes. Mommy remains calm. She notices her little one’s fear and she decides to sooth and teach. “Ryland,” she says. “Mommy is going to have to work very hard to get the stickers off of the brand-new bed Mommy and Daddy bought you.” “I wike my stickohs,” Ryland says in his tiny, barely audible voice. Stay calm, Mommy. “Mommy will give you a book for your stickers, Ry. And if you aren’t sure where you can put stickers or not, will you please ask Mommy?” “Otay, Mommy,” Ryland says, sad that he disappointed Mommy. Here’s the best part that Mommy gets to add in: “I love you, Ry-Ry.” And Ry-Ry’s little arms go around Mommy’s neck because she is just such a good and gentle Mommy. But it rarely goes like that. In fact, it takes a lot of patience and calmness for anything to go like that. Some people will laugh at that scenario and make fun of it. “He needs a good spank!,” they’ll say. And many, many parents fail at discipline in the moment because punishment in the moment is quicker and more satisfying ... even if it’s common knowledge that it’s harmful. Positive discipline is when you clearly communicate what behaviors are appropriate or not from your child. Positive discipline also rewards good behaviors, and if need be, outlines reasonable consequences of “bad” behaviors.

SCRAMBLING TO DISCIPLINE

Possibly the most popular form of discipline today is Time Out. And while it can be effective for helping little ones calm down and regain control, parents often misuse the technique, getting into battles to get the child to return to the Time-Out chair, corner or

22 april 2020

room. With a little inconsistency, Time Out can collapse altogether leading to parent frustration. And frustrated parents, worn out for trying, can resort to yelling, guilt tripping, giving the silent treatment ... or spanking. Only two years ago, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement that parents should not spank their children citing its harmful effects. And while spanking is on the decline (countless studies show that physical punishment can lead to aggression, antisocial tendencies and mental health problems), the South remains steeped in spanking, whether it’s “wrong,” “right,” or somewhere in between and that’s all there is to it. Many of today’s parents were spanked in childhood, either by their mother, father, grandmother or all. Spanking has been a part of family culture for hundreds of years — with many people quoting the biblical guidance of “spare the rod, spoil the child.” And while it’s never best to paint a broad stroke over any issue — certainly not one related to disciplining a child — it’s worth noting that discipline actually means teaching — which is at the root of positive discipline. It takes time, energy, patience and calmness, which for many adults is a virtual sea change compared to what they were brought up with and learned. “A parent is a valuable tool in teaching children appropriate behavior,” Williams says. “Parents should lead by example and model behaviors they would like to see in their child. It is a parent’s responsibility to provide a safe environment for children to learn and explore in, provide guidance, and redirection when needed, and to set limits,” she says. Yet it’s so easy to lose our way.

MIXED UP IN THE MOMENT

Parenting doesn’t have to be a battlefield, but parents DO need to remain aware when the kids are around. Family dynamic can change instantly. While you’re cooking dinner, an eruption from the next room can have you racing to the rescue and piling up assumptions: “Jackson, how many times do I have to tell you not to hit your little brother??!” “Mom, he knocked down my Lego tower! I’ve been building that all day!” Jackson cries. “Christopher, how many times have I told you not to touch your brother’s Legos??!!” Christopher starts to wail. “I’m sick of him messing with my stuff, Mom! What am I supposed to do??” Jackson cries. What IS Jackson supposed to do? For the most part, children want to behave well, but life happens and Lego towers get toppled. Young Christopher didn’t want to upset his brother, he simply wanted a shot at playing with the Legos. It’s up to the parent to lead the way. “Positive discipline is most successful when a parent is calm,” says Williams. “It is important to listen and allow your child to explain, but communicate clearly, the consequences of their behavior and follow through on any consequences, if appropriate,” she adds. “Getting down on your child’s level, making eye contact and avoiding distractions like cell phone use or television while disciplining your child shows them that your actions and words are purposeful and not reactionary,” she adds. It’s not easy to stay cool in the heat of any given moment, especially if you’re tired or stressed. Just remember, if you yell, your child will learn to yell. And if you hit, your children will learn to hit. For everyone’s well-being, it’s worth it try a little harder.

A BETTER WAY

Regardless of the traditions you were raised with and your stand

nashvilleparent.com

on spanking, research shows that if you want to be effective in teaching your children how to behave appropriately, you need to be warm towards them and very clear about your expectations. Let empathy, a firm and consistent tone and an understanding that most of the misbehaviors children display are actually consistent with child development guide you. “Parenting is a learning experience for the adult as well,” says Williams. “It is important for parents to have realistic expectations of appropriate behavior at different stages of development,” she adds. And it’s not hard to do a little reading up on children and childhood behavior in stages as they grow. From the time your child is born, take a look at the world from his perspective. If your little one has placed super-tacky stickers on a brand-new wooden head board that will require scrubbing to remove, realize that he simply wasn’t seeing it that way. While positive discipline takes more time than a quick temper does, keep this in mind: your goal is to help your children develop confidence and independence. You want them to be able to deal with disappointments in a home that encourages learning from mistakes. If you keep your home environment safe, you will spare your child emotional struggle now ... and later.

HOMEMADE ROCK CANDY EXPERIMENT: You’ll need: • 2 cups water • 6 cups granulated sugar • Optional: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon flavoring extract or oil • Optional: food coloring — to give your candy a fun color • 4 12-ounce jars or one quart-sized jar • Cotton thread & pencils or 4 wooden skewers • Candy thermometer Directions: • Clean jars with hot water. • For each jar, cut a piece of string that’s a few inches longer than the height of your jar and tape it to a pencil. Position the pencil over the mouth of the jar and wind it until the end of the string is hanging about an inch from the bottom. If you’re using skewers, use a clothespin to hang it in the jar. • Bring 2 cups of water to a boil over medium high heat, then add one cup of sugar. Stir until it dissolves completely. Repeat this step with all 6 cups of sugar to create a super-saturated liquid. If your sugar is not dissolving, raise the heat. • Heat the sugar solution until it reaches 230 degrees Fahrenheit on your candy thermometer. This is called the “soft ball” stage in candy-making. • Remove the solution from the heat and add flavorings (no more than 1 teaspoon). • Carefully wet the strings or skewers in your syrup and roll them in granulated sugar. This will be the base of the sugar crystals. • Optional: Add 6-7 drops of food coloring to your jars.

THINGS TO DO

CREATIVE PLAY

L

Fire Up Those Imaginations!

earning is everywhere when your child is little, so take full advantage of his willingness to play. Here are 50 activities to do together

1. MAKE PLAY DOUGH AND USE IT TO MAKE FUN LITTLE THINGS. Play Dough Recipe: 1 cup white flour; 1/2 cup salt; 2 tablespoon cream of tartar (find it in the spice section); 1 tablespoon oil; 1 cup water food coloring Directions: Mix first 4 ingredients in a pan. Add water and mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 3 - 5 minutes. Dough will become difficult to stir and form a “clump.” Remove from stove and knead for 5 minutes – add food coloring during kneading process.

2. CREATE A TREASURE BASKET A small basket or box labeled “Treasures” can hold items that your child is fascinated by or that you want him to learn about. For instance, you can do a kitchen theme of different cooking utensils, or things that we use for hygiene ... the sky’s the limit. 3. WINDOW ART Use sheets of foam for crafting and cut into all kinds of shapes or create a fun story scene — this stuff stays and is easily removed. 4. MAKE PAINT PRINTS Use broccoli, peppers, spaghetti, toy cars, cardboard tubes, egg cartons.

40 april 2020

5. MAKE CLOUD DOUGH (moldable sand!) to make fun shapes. Cloud dough recipe: 5 cups plain flour; 1 cup baby oil. Mix and play.

19. MAKE A ROCK POOL using a large roasting pan, and tell seaside stories. 20. PAINT A TABLE TOP WITH CHALKBOARD PAINT then draw on it. 21. PUT TOGETHER A SENSORY TUB

6. CREATE SHAVING CREAM and finger paint shapes on a tray. 7. MOLD SMALL TOYS IN JELLO and dig them out; play and explore. 8. PLAY “CAN YOU GUESS WHAT THIS SMELL IS?” using items in your kitchen. 9. FREEZE SOME TOYS IN ICE and try and have a race to see who can excavate them the quickest. 10. PAINT EACH OTHER’S FACES with face crayons. 11. SET UP A ROLE-PLAY COFFEE SHOP 12. MAKE CLOTHING PIN FAIRIES using small pieces of fabric and a finetip Sharpie. Use the fairies to tell a story. 13. PRACTICE WRITING LETTERS AND NUMBERS IN SALT

22. MAKE MACARONI NECKLACES 23. MAKE SANDWICHES TOGETHER 24. STEP IN PAINT AND MAKE FOOTPRINTS on paper. 25. DECORATE COLORING SHEETS with buttons & other items.

26. MAKE EDIBLE FINGERPAINTS. Edible Fingerpaints Recipe: 2 cups corn starch; 1 cup cold water; 4-and-ahalf cups of boiling water; liquid food coloring Directions: Mix the corn starch with the cold water, and stir together. ids are kids! Life and activities can’t be serious all the time. When there are no goals to be achieved and the stress of

winning or losing is out of the picture, kids can relax, take a break and just have fun! It’s recommended that kids have at least 20 minutes of free activity time, three times per week.

ONLINE ART FOR KIDS AT THE FRIST ART MUSEUM

O

ne of the most popular things kids are doing at home these days are arts and crafts projects. If local craft stores remain closed, this is the time to make use of Amazon prime and order up the goods. Your kids can discover a lot of inspiration at the Frist Art Museum’s website for kids — fristkids.org. The site provides lots of fascinating content with videos and activities. Subjects include science and art, engineering art, discovering symbols, style in architecture, movement in art, books and art, sculpture as public art, color in nature, patterns in nature and more. Kids will also find instruction on creating puppets, marbled paper and thaumatrope. The site gives youngsters a nice dive into art appreciation and theory while giving them a good dose of know-how in areas of mood, color, contrast, texture, balance and beyond.

CREATE WITH YOUNG REMBRANDTS

F

or kids who love to draw, Young Rembrandts of Middle Tennesseee is offering online drawing classes for ages 6 - 12. The curriculum teaches basic to advanced drawing skills, art techniques and vocabulary — new lessons each week. Register atyoungrembrandts.com/ mid-tn/view-classes-enroll.

MOM STORIES

I Love Just About Every Minute

It Is Just His Normal

by Kelly Peters

by Julie Petty

I

was lucky enough to become a mother 13 years ago to my oldest son, Jacob, who is in the eighth grade! Since then I have added a 7-year-old daughter named Riley and twin 3-yearolds, Madelyn and Greyson. We begin our day at 6:15 getting our second-grader off to school, followed by getting the twins ready for the day and seeing off my middle schooler. While I’m taking a break from teaching elementary school to stay home with my twins, we

love to spend our time outdoors and playing at home. We are lucky enough to live close to a playground, shopping center, and grocery store. We either walk or take the bike everywhere! After an evening of sports and homework the kids are all in bed by 9 and I love to wind down with a good book or catch up on my latest TV show. I love just about every minute of being a mom and am sad to the years going by so quickly! I am one blessed mother.

S

ix years ago I was blessed with an amazing addition to my family — my son, Noah. He was much easier as a baby than his older sister Angela. It may have been easier because I had Angela to help watch Noah, get a bottle, get clothes, throw away diapers. When Noah was about 18 months my babysitter hesitantly gave me an assessment she filled out on autism. I had never heard of autism. I went to the doctor the doctor assured me he never suspected any prob-

nashvilleparent.com

lem and we should just wait and see. The next months I counted the words he was saying, but I knew something was wrong. Finally, before his 3rd birthday, he was diagnosed with autism. Since his diagnosis, we got him into Pre-K where he receives speech therapy weekly. Today Noah is 6. He can be loud and challenging or the most quiet sweetest boy I’ve ever met. Sometimes people ask what it’s like to have an autistic son? I now smile and say it’s wonderful. He isn’t different; it is just his normal.

Teach Kids the Value of Slowing Down and Experiencing the Restorative Value of Solitude

P

arenthood takes time and patience. It may seem obvious at first, but it bears being re-mentioned along the way. Two of the most important traits that I’ve come to rely upon as a parent is:

1. Spend more quality, active time fully engaged with your children. Encourage them to explore the world/respect nature as much as possible with outdoor play. 2. Teach your kids to respect others and to be disciplined in their behavior and to adhere to a certain level of age-appropriate boundaries. When speaking to my son, now 25, (who become a dad in December,2019), I gave him my best advice. I shared with him that when I was a new mom I was so nervous before he was born. I read all the parent magazine articles and read & re-read the What to Expect When You’re Expecting series of parenthood books. In the end, I came away with the biggest takeaway and that was to simply give and show love to your child unconditionally. To give your best at trying to be as good a parent that you can! That, to me, meant spending as much quality time engaged

with my child reading books, talking, teaching, laughing and playing with him. If I didn’t know the answers or I made a mistake, I would tell my son exactly that, but I’d then try to correct it or search for the answer as soon as possible. Even now, as a grandparent, my son and I often enjoy cooking together, planting and gardening and generally staying healthy, fit and active! Seek to develop the time-honored traits of the past. Traits which require the strength of the human being. Traits which require neither electricity, electronics or gadgets. Teach kids the value of slowing down and experiencing the restorative value of solitude — a peace and quiet, derived from relying upon a solid inner peace which can only come from within. The world in which we live today, places such emphasis on the many fleeting things which aren’t necessarily of an enduring value and which will not serve the person as a whole. Being active with your child and staying actively engaged in their lives shows that you truly love and care. It also permits more opportunity to enrich both of your lives amd the lives of others. These are the truly enduring traits which will best serve a person and mankind for all of their lives! (please turn the page)

Hidden in All of These Moments, I Get a Squeezing Hug Out of Nowhere

H

by Autumn Brown

72 april 2020

nashvilleparent.com

ow did I become a mom? Well, it wasn’t a full transformation overnight, but looking back now it seems that’s how it happened. The whirlwind of learning to breastfeed, create the perfect temperature bottle, wrestle my baby to change a diaper, how to properly install a car seat, identify rashes, making sure all the snaps on a sleeper are properly aligned ... all things I struggle with three kids later. I have been a mom for over seven years. When I first heard that little heartbeat in January, 2012. I showed up to the doctor’s office asking, “Am I really pregnant?” Of course, I took three tests before making the appointment, but oh, that 99.9% accuracy never felt accurate enough. I remember feeling shaky and thinking “Who am I to be someones mother? I’m not ready for this.” I look back at that moment from time to time when I read online a new mother asking “what to pack for the hospital?” It reminds me that I have been there and done that and am I happy to give advice. These days, I am learning new things with my kids ( 7, 4, and 10 months). I have learned multitasking time and time again. Each year things on our plates change. I am a stay at home mom of three, this is incredibly tough given our one-income household. It was a choice we had to make due to the expenses of daycare and the want for a less over-scheduled environment. I home school our oldest, who

is in first grade. Last year was easier, this year I have struggled with pressure I put on myself with teaching him to read. Not long ago he read his first early reader book! I was over the moon proud of him and realized I’m not messing him up, and that he is right on track! My 4-year-old daughter and 10-month old-daughter have developed their own communication. The 4 year old can be eating something and the baby babbles and the 4 year old will say, “Oh, here you go,” and will hand the baby a half bitten blueberry. They also ramble on with their kitchen set, and big brother will come in as a customer. I love being a mom to these kids. I don’t doubt that being a mother is who I was always suppose to be. Yes, I wish my day didn’t start at 5 a.m.running around cleaning messes, changing diapers, potty training, refilling cup after cup, cleaning toothpaste out of the sink, telling the kids to not argue over who is going to sit where,or the other hundred things I repeat daily until 8 p.m. Hidden in all of these moments I get a “squeezing hug out of nowhere”, the smiling, “I love you, Mom”, a “thank you for playing with me, Mom”, and I know I am blessed. I’m reminded daily that being a mom is truly one of the most rewarding feelings in the world and these little people are everything.
