Kerra and Josh were busy parents of three boys with a baby girl on the way when their oldest, four-year-old Decker, complained of a tummy ache. His symptoms seemed to get worse, so they took him to a walk-in clinic where they were immediately sent to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. There, our nephrology team, who are experts in treating kidney conditions, confirmed what the walk-in doctor had suspected: Decker had somehow contracted an infection caused by the bacteria E. coli. That infection had developed into Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, or HUS, a dangerous condition that affects kidney function and the blood’s ability to clot.

Decker had been in the ICU battling HUS for over a week when little brother Locklen, then two, began showing

symptoms of the same illness. Doctors at Monroe Carell found that, like his big brother, he had HUS resulting from an infection caused by the bacteria E. coli.

Both boys were in the hospital for weeks where they underwent dialysis and multiple surgeries. But thanks to the compassionate care provided by Monroe Carell’s multidisciplinary team of experts, first-grader Decker and kindergartener Locklen made remarkable recoveries and today lead full, active lives.

Stop Choosing Your Battles

Ioften comb through mom groups on Facebook looking for “spirited” discussions on parenting issues my wife and I are dealing with.

The other day, I stumbled upon a post from a mom asking about setting screen time limits and avoiding meltdowns from her feisty, Fortnite-playing 7-year-old. The overwhelming response?

“Choose your battles.”

Trust me, as the parent of a recently-diagnosed-on-the-spectrum 4-year-old with speech delay, this concept is not new to me. But why deal with defiance with such a combative metaphor? Are we really “at war” with our kids?

First o , the concept of “choosing battles” puts parents in a defensive mindset — that you’re in for a fight. This results in approaching those moments when your kids are doing exactly what their DNA dictate they do — advocate for something they want or refuse to cooperate with a limit — with your haunches up. This parental state of mind only leads to exactly what you are trying to avoid: a power struggle.

Secondly, “choosing battles” implies you’re deciding to give in to your child’s demands because it’s one too many battles for you to handle. When your kid eventually catches on to this (and they will), they’ll learn they can eventually wear you down and get their way.

You’re the parent. Don’t walk on eggshells and live in fear of setting a limit you think’s important because you’re dreading the possible tantrum that might ensue.

It’s not about choosing your battles, it’s about choosing what limits are best for your children and implementing them calmly, lovingly and consistently (despite your child’s blood-curdling screams when you tell them to turn o Fortnite).

It sucks to be the bad guy, but this is one of those pays-o -in-thelong-run parenting tips. You don’t have to be totally inflexible 24/7. You may decide to allow more screen time before in certain circumstances. What’s key is that you are deciding on this plan.

Remember, it takes two to battle. Your child may try to draw you into a struggle, but you don’t have to participate in a tug-of-war that’s not good for you or them.

Hold strong! Be confident about the limits you set and remain loving as you implement them. Eventually, you shouldn’t have to “choose your battles” ever again.

Rock and Roll Playhouse: A Fun Outing for Kids That Parents Will Love, Too

The Rock and Roll Playhouse takes place at Brooklyn Bowl (925 3rd Ave. N., Nashville), a live concert series geared towards kids ages 17. A band performs songs by iconic musicians throughout history (think The Beatles, Dave Matthews Band, Billy Joel) and in addition to a concert, they offer games, movement and lots of fun for your Littles. This is not your typical music class or sing-a-long for kids, and as a parent, you will love this experience far more. Why? Because it’s music you love and not another rendition of “The Wheels on the Bus.”

I took my 2-year-old for the Taylor Swift-themed show. I was probably more excited than my toddler because she doesn’t yet know who Taylor Swift is, but it was the perfect opportunity to introduce her to some of my favorite music. They have a band and singer up on stage to give your kids an hour-long concert of the chosen artist’s songs (and it’s the hits, not the ones you’ve never heard that often are showcased at concerts). The host is funny and engaging, and they also incorporate games to keep the Littles active throughout. The kids did the Limbo for one song and played with a giant parachute during another with some help from parents who are encouraged to participate, dance and sing along — it’s a fun morning for all ages.

The venue is great too. Parking isn’t offered, but they have paid lots right across the street that are empty at the morning hours. They have food and drinks for sale and even cocktails if you are feeling up for it at 11 a.m. (they give away wristbands at the door for 21+). They have tables set up along the perimeter of the dance floor so you can order

food and sit down to eat. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for the concert from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m., so I recommend arriving right around 10:30 to snag a table (or tables if you have a big group) and order your food before the concert begins. They teased the upcoming shows, but I highly recommend checking it out for their already announced Mother’s Day show which is Shania Twain themed or their Father’s Day Grateful Dead show. Tickets are $15, so it’s reasonably priced and it will get your kids’ energy out. Kids under 1 are free, though you may want to purchase headphones (linked on their website) to protect their little ears if you plan to tote them along . We had a blast and absolutely will be going again!

Check Out the “Baby & Kids Zone” at the 2023 Nashville Wellness Fest

Nashville Parent joins the Nashville Wellness Fest on Saturday, May 6 with the “Baby & Kids Zone,” a special area just for children and families, inside Expo Hall 3 at the Nashville Fairgrounds!

The event — which sold out last year and attracted nearly 1500 visitors — has added two specialist areas in addition to booth space for 100 more vendors featuring everything from yoga to acupuncture. In addition, there will be free workshops, food samples and other activities and demos for all ages. As an attendee, you will also be entered to win prizes!

Top INFANT Issues

How do you care for this tiny, needy creature? Where is the owner’s manual? Here are tips on what you should pay attention to.

The initial days of parenting are overwhelming because of a number of factors, including Baby’s arrival, exhaustion and information — or lack of. Many new parents struggle time to time with managing newborn problems, which leads to anxiety. You are not alone! Remember to reach out to your pediatrician and friends for support. That said, newborns are delicate and do not have a completely developed immune system. They require attentive care and, without it, can develop infections. Arm yourself with knowledge about these common issues related to infant management as put forth by Jennifer Shu, M.D.’s book, Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality (American Academy of Pediatrics; 2018).

Common Newborn Problems

When it comes to health problems, the newborn stage is the most critical. Here are a few health conditions that are fairly common in newborns:

Abdominal Distension

Most newborns have protruding bellies. But if your baby’s belly feels hard and swollen in between feeds, do some sleuthing. Nine times out of 10, it will be just gas or constipation, but sometimes a swollen belly can indicate another more important condition.

Blueish Skin

Jaundice

Jaundice is a common problem among newborns. Many infants have high bilirubin levels at birth, as their livers are still immature. Most cases of jaundice in newborns resolve with time. But it can also cause serious problems. So, let your doctor prescribe a treatment to cure jaundice. The symptoms of newborn jaundice usually begin to appear two days after birth and may begin to resolve by the time the baby is 2 weeks old

Safe While Sleeping

The ABCs of safe sleep mean babies sleep:

A = Alone

B = On The Back

C = In a Crib

Data from a Tennessee 2022 report show the main reason for sleep-related deaths include unsafe bedding or toys in the sleeping area (86%), infants not sleeping in a crib or bassinet (69%), and infants not sleeping on their backs (56%). Unsafe sleep environments are the third leading cause of infant death in Tennessee.

Baby skin problems include bluish skin. It is pretty normal for babies to have blue hands and feet, but this may not be a cause of concern. In some cases, newborns can also develop blueness around their mouth and tongue while crying. The blueness goes away with time. But if your baby does not get their pink skin back, you need to consult your doctor.

Coughing

It is normal for a baby to cough when they’re feeding as sometimes the milk can come in too fast. But if your baby has a cough that refuses to go away or if they often gag during feeding, see a doctor. It may indicate a problem with the lungs or the digestive system. If your little one is coughing incessantly — especially at night — you’ll also need to rule out whooping cough.

Respiratory Distress

It takes a newborn a few hours to breathe normally. But once their body learns to breathe, they should have no more difficulties. Breathing problems in babies happen due to many issues. If you notice your baby is having difficulty breathing, check their nasal passage. In most cases, difficulty in breathing occurs due to a blockage in the nasal passages. You can treat this problem with the use of saline drops.

But if you notice any of the following symptoms, go see your pediatrician immediately:

— Rapid breathing

— Flaring of her nose

— Grunting while breathing

— Blue skin color that refuses to fade

— If you had preterm labor, your baby is at a higher risk of developing respiratory distress.

Vomiting

Vomiting is a common health problem among infants. It is normal for infants to spit up milk after feeding. But frequent vomiting is not normal. To prevent frequent vomiting and spit-ups, make sure your baby is not lactose intolerant or allergic to breast milk. You also need to burp your baby frequently to prevent them from throwing up their entire meal. If your child is vomiting and not gaining adequate weight, they might need medical intervention. Also, watch out for the color. If your baby’s vomit looks green, talk to your doctor about possible infections and treatment options. Digestive issues could also lead to vomiting.

Fever

A fever is not the problem. A fever is an indicator that your baby’s body is fighting off an infection. Mild fevers don’t need medical intervention. But if your little one is running a high fever, let your doctor have a look at them. High fever can be a cause of worry and lead to seizures.

Colic

Is your little one crying without a break, and you can’t figure out why?

When your baby gets fussy, consider using some or all of the “five S’s”

— swaddle, side or stomach position (only when awake), shush, swing and suck — which were first suggested by pediatrician Harvey Karp, M.D., author of The Happiest Baby on the Block

Skin Problems

Infants and babies have sensitive skin. So it is common for them to experience skin problems. Some of the common skin problems your baby may encounter include:

— Diaper Rash

One of the more common skin problems in babies is diaper rash. To prevent this common condition, keep the following points in mind:

• Be regular when it comes to changing your baby’s diaper. Change the diaper every few hours even if it is not soiled.

• Use a diaper rash cream in case your baby develops a rash.

• Petroleum jelly can provide a barrier from urine and bacteria.

• If you are using a cloth diaper, use fragrance and dye-free detergents.

— Cradle Cap

A common skin problem among babies. If your baby has developed cradle cap, do not worry. Wash Baby’s hair with a mild shampoo. Use a soft brush when the scalp is moist to gently remove the skin scales.

Colds

Some infections are common among infants and babies. While viral infections like cold and flu can go away without playing much havoc with and older baby’s health, for infants, a simple cold can turn into a serious infection, so, it is important to see your doctor.

Ear Infections

Ear infections are also extremely common among little ones. If your infant or baby is tugging at their ear and fussier than usual, they may have an ear infection. Viral infections go away once they run their course, but bacterial infections may need a dose of antibiotics.

Oral Thrush

Oral thrush is another infection that may attack your tiny tot. When yeast takes over your baby’s mouth, they’ll be diagnosed with oral thrush. Talk to your pediatrician and see if your little one needs a prescription for antifungal medication.

Should You Worry?

If your baby has a temperature above 100.4 (taken with a rectal thermometer), call your doctor. It’s also helpful to call your doctor if your baby isn’t eating well or if they’re crying constantly.

The benefits of skin-to-skin care care (SSC) are plentiful and begin right after birth for at least the first hour after birth. SSC can continue during the postpartum period at home — practiced by either parent — as long as the baby and parent are positioned properly.

Which version of summer is more true for you?

A. Lazy days spent lounging poolside with your contented family.

B. A rush of activities, late nights, letting everything go.

Want a summer that’s a little more lounging and less racing around? Here’s your guide for leaning into a more carefree, creative and spontaneous season. Hit pause. Rather than vault into summer, ease into it.

“Our school year is full of activity, routine and deadlines. Use the first few weeks of summer like a detox from constant activities,” says mom of three Shannon Kinney-Duh, holistic life and spiritual coach.

TIP: Brainstorm a list of summer desires/activities together. Mindfully answer questions like: What do we want summer to look like? More down time? More family connection? Less running around? And remember, free activities count, too. Kinney-Duh’s sons enjoy making stop-motion movies, writing plays, painting at the park, water balloon fights and movie nights in the backyard.

BOREDOM IS OK.

Kinney-Duh suggests that you look at boredom as a creative opportunity. Boredom, she says, “invites kids’ creativity to kick in, providing their deep need to play more with a space to flourish.” Multiple studies show that kids who are given the time and space for creativity and personal expression without adult interference turn out to be more flexible to

change, stronger problem-solvers and innovators.

“Children need time to immerse themselves in creative activities, a place that feels safe to express ideas that are unconventional, and encouragement to explore the unknown so they can discover what they enjoy and unlock a universe of possibilities,” writes Helen Hadani, a researcher at the Center for Childhood Creativity, in her paper, “Inspiring a Generation to Create: Critical Components of Creativity in Children.”

TIP: Keep a space in your home that allows for freewheeling creative expression. Stock it with painting, drawing and craft supplies, inexpensive cameras, recycled objects and building materials.

STRIKE A BALANCE.

For some of us, envisioning long days without a plan causes our brain synapses to crackle and pop with alarm. Without structure, won’t our kids spend the next two-and-a-half months fighting or turning into houseplants playing video games? Of course, we also don’t want to spend the entire summer peeling our sweaty selves in and out of the car as we run our kids from one scheduled activity to another.

“All too often we fall into the ‘too much/not enough’ trap,” Kinney-Duh says. “We end up filling our days with obligations and too many activities with this underlying feeling that if we don’t, we somehow aren’t doing enough for our kids. This cycle can easily leave us feeling tired, overwhelmed and depleted.”

Decide what a happy medium looks like and what your priorities are, including your needs for self-care.

Enjoy your days, keep everything under control (not a bad thing!) and be sure the kiddos are on track with school expectations, too.

TIP: Ask questions like: What types of skills would I like my kids to work on this summer? What are they interested in doing? Could a responsible sitter help run my kids around a few times a week? What are ways I can recharge and care for myself to ensure I show up feeling present, patient and engaged with my family?

PROVIDE SIMPLE STRUCTURE.

While summer is meant to be more laid back, providing a framework around the days helps kids feel secure and grounded. A sense of structure is especially important for children with sensory, attention or impulse control issues. They “benefit greatly from monitoring and feedback during the summer to stay on track, maintain and improve communication skills,” says parent and life coach Sara Minges, M.S.

TIP: Plan weekday mornings for more structured — including reading time — and the afternoons for free play. Perhaps designate Sunday evenings as s’mores nights with friends or Fridays as pizza/ game nights.

MAKE A KEEP-OURHOME-NICE PLAN.

Suddenly the kids are home for every meal and there’s a laid-back atmosphere (good job on that), but something else: dishes everywhere! Be sure as summer starts that you make it clear that everyone return their cereal bowls, water bottles and other accoutrements to the kitchen sink. Establish, too, that they need to keep their rooms organized and their beds made or you will get upset — and when you’re unhappy, everyone’s unhappy.

TIP: Just like you are going to make a family media plan, make a family clean-up plan. Let your kids know that with everyone home, they are needed to pitch in with chores and keeping the household running from laundry to bathroom once-overs to taking out the extra trash from everyone being around.

MAKE A FAMILY MEDIA PLAN.

Establish your family’s technology rules as soon as summer starts to avoid tech overload and battles over time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no tech time for toddlers, other than video chatting and only one hour a day for preschoolers. Set reasonable guidelines for your older children to ensure they’re getting plenty of exercise, good sleep and face-to-face time with family and peers.

TIP: Set aside one tech-free day a week. “That means no technology at all,” Kinney-Duh says. “It may sound hard, but it’s worth it!”

BE REALISTIC.

When planning your family’s summer vacation, take into account each family member’s interests and build in time to relax and take breaks from each other.

“Too many activities and not enough ‘chill time’ can push everyone’s last nerve,” Minges says. Instead of focusing on creating the perfect vacation, remain flexible. While you can plan for some variables, you can’t control the weather, a moody teenager, or your 2-year-old’s inopportune meltdown while going through airport security.

“Any personality, irritability or anxiety issues experienced during the year will still be there and may become more pronounced,”Minges says.

TIP: Choose a vacation destination with activities that appeal to each member of your family. Remind your kids of the importance of flexibility.

“They may not have the extras or comforts they are used to when traveling such as comfy pillows, TV, separate bathrooms and beds, favorite foods, or friends to play with,” Minges says.

INSPIRE CREATIVE CONNECTION.

Document the summer with photos and stories in a summer journal that your whole family can contribute to, including ups and downs. Chances are the moments when things went awry are those that you will recall with laughter later.

TIP: Minges suggests creating a “wall of gratitude.” Using sticky notes or slips of paper and markers, each family member writes their favorite moments from their vacation and pins it to the wall. Encourage younger children to draw pictures of their favorite moments. Don’t forget to take a photo of your wall!

SAVOR SUMMER.

Notice and embrace the unplanned moments when family connection unfurls. “Our kids grow up fast and the summer seems to be shorter and shorter every year,” Kinney-Duh says. “Slowing down and savoring the moment is really what summer is all about.”

TIP: Explore simple ways to enjoy summer together. Some ideas include exploring a nature trail; camping; kayaking; listening to crickets; trying a new activity; taking a family cooking class; having a “do-nothing’ day; playing board games; introducing your kids to music you loved.

Drowning is a silent killer, reports the Pediatric Trauma Injury Prevention team at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. In less than two minutes under water, a child can lose consciousness and brain damage can occur after just four to six minutes. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4. There are two peaks in age for drowning risk: toddlers and/or young children who accidentally gain access to a body of water; and adolescents (i.e., risk-takers) who may be horsing around. Since a toddler can drown in just a few inches of water, parental supervision is key. You cannot assume that a lifeguard — who has many swimmers to watch — is always going to see a little head go under water.

The ABC’s of water safety:

A = Adult supervision

If an adult “water watcher” is not there, then no swimming is permitted under any circumstances.

B = Barriers and boating safety

At a lake or on vacation at the ocean, always swim at a lifeguarded beach and pay attention to beach warning flags. On a boat, always wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

C = Classes for swimming

All kids and adults needs swimming lessons. “Floaties,” “Noodles” and other devices are no substitute for the ability to swim.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes babies younger than 6 months old stay out of direct sunlight altogether. Instead, protect them with shade, use sun hats and protective clothing. The AAP does not recommended sunscreen for babies under 6 months old. After that, use sunscreen on all of your kids, no matter their skin pigmentation, and hats on whoever will wear one (and can manage to hold onto it). No matter your kids’ skin type, it’s important to take daily precautions to protect it from the sun.

“No matter the skin pigmentation, sun protection is vital,” says Sharon Albers, M.D. assistant professor of dermatology and director, pediatrics dermatology at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital.

WHAT KIDS NEED TO KNOW

Sunscreen will keep your kids’ skin safe from burning in the sun. They need to apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 before going out, reapplying it every two hours or right after swimming. If your child has very light skin, quality sun-protective coverups and clothing is crucial (especially for babies) such as what’s available from Coolibar at amazon.com.

Kids are notorious for leaving full water bottles behind at camp and other places. They can also become dehydrated quickly leading to fatigue, irritability and heat exhaustion. Kid bodies are 60 to 70 percent water, but they can lose it through sweat and illness. Make sure your kids get plenty to drink, even if you have to stand over them watching.

WHAT KIDS NEED TO KNOW

To play outside when it’s hot, they must drink lots of water. They can drink plain water or even water infused with flavors and variety, but in order to feel good, they need to drink. Some kids may prefer water with fruit in it (fill a pitcher with water, strawberries or orange, etc. and let it sit in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving).

“Hundreds of kids are rushed to emergency rooms every day because of bicycle-related injuries,” says a 2023 study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy — 11 percent of which are traumatic brain injuries. Almost 90 percent of children who fracture a skull from a bicycle accident were not wearing a helmet. Still, one-in-five parents are skipping this safety measure for their bike-riding kids, and the numbers for scooters are even worse.

WHAT KIDS NEED TO KNOW

It’s a no-brainer to wear a helmet if you want to ride. They can help you pick out the helmet so they can take ownership. Some of the best helmets around for kids are Nutcase helmets (nutcasehelmets. com); Giro Scamp helmets (giro.com); and, perhaps most affordably, Joovy Noodle helmets (joovy.com).

Each year, children are the victim of dog bites, yet the injury prevention experts at Monroe Carell Jr. Hospital at Vanderbilt say that most of the bites don’t have to happen.

“Most dog bites are preventable,” says Stacey Pecenka, MPH, CPH, manager, Trauma Injury Prevention Program at Monroe Carell. “Nearly one in five people bitten by a dog require medical attention, and it usually happens with familiar dogs and occur during everyday activities.”

WHAT KIDS NEED TO KNOW

Tell your kids to always ask the dog’s owner if you can pet their dog. Also, never startle a dog and make sure a dog sees you. Pay attention to how the dog is behaving before you approach; if the dog wags his tail and acts friendly, you can proceed. Hold your hand out for the dog to sniff (it’s like a handshake to a dog). Pet the dog on its back, not the face. Also: Never pet a dog when it is eating or chewing; never try to hug a dog you don’t know; never try to pet a sleeping dog.

It’s a common sight to see a stroller covered with a blanket or other fabric to keep sun off of a baby, however, beware.

Even the thinnest of cloths or covers over the stroller or carrier can reduce air circulation within the travel system and create a greenhouse effect in the enclosed space, reports Vanderbilt Children’s. This may result in the temperature inside the stroller rising to dangerous levels. Make sure your child is cool in the car seat and in the stroller. A stroller with a canopy and an opening can keep the air flowing; be sure to check your child frequently when walking or jogging — every 15 minutes or so.

tiktok & social media

Idle time in the summer means more TikTok time than ever. With more than 1 billion monthly active users, TikTok is under fire for exposure to dangerous content, including the “challenges” that young kids are drawn to, often with terrible repercussions. To buffer the app, in March 2023, TikTok announced new “daily screen time limits” for every account registered to a user under 18. Under the limits, 13 -to-17-year-olds on the app are asked to enter their passcode to keep watching videos after one hour has passed. For users who say they are 12 or younger, parents can be in charge of their passcode and add 30 minutes of watch time at the 60-minute mark. Basically, TikTok’s speed bumps may slow down the usage but that doesn’t mean kids are safe from harmful content.

Parents are starting to sit up and fight back. Last month, Utah became the first state to pass a law prohibiting social media services from allowing users under 18 to have accounts without the explicit consent of a parent or guardian. The move is intended to address the current mental health crisis among American teenagers as well as to protect young users from bullying and other unwanted interactions. But your kids are still going to find ways to be on social media whether it’s TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram or any other app. This is why it’s very important for you to know what apps they are using and to have their passwords and an ongoing dialogue about what they do while they are online.

WHAT KIDS NEED TO KNOW

According to the book Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive in Their Digital World, (Routledge; 2018), kids need to know you’re aware and involved. Whenever possible, use screens with your kids so you can share values and expectations. Most importantly, your kids need to know that you are going to have regular conversations with them about social media, asking them what they are looking at and what they find interesting. As with anything, when you’re kids know you are involved, they are more likely to be safer in their endeavors. And if you can manage to set a safe tone — not a judgemental one — they are more likely to tell you when something undesireable is going on.

Discuss social media use with your kids in a non-threatening way, by letting them know about your experiences and encouraging safe practices, too.

Don’t be ambivalent about bike helmets — that’s totally uncool.

If you and your family are looking for a di erent view of Nashville, then The Adventure Park at Nashville has just the change of scenery you need! Up in the treetops of Belle Meade sits the Park, with numerous courses and ziplines that cater to all ages.

The courses are self-guided and have five distinct levels of di culty. The park also o ers Nashville’s only outdoor Axe-throwing and spaces for picnics and parties. Booking online ahead of time is encouraged, and it's best to arrive 30 - 45 minutes before your scheduled start  (due to the safety training and carabiner practice that are mandatory before you climb). The park also recommends wearing gloves (leather) while climbing. My husband, Dan, and I brought our own from home and were able to purchase extra small gloves for our 7-year-old son, Leyton, in the gift shop. We were thankful we had gloves, as the metal wires and sti ropes would have made for sore palms.

After we watched a safety video and practiced on a low zipline how to clip in and out, it was o to the main climbing platform to choose our first course! Unfortunately, our son quickly realized he was a bit afraid of the height and wanted to go back down to the low ropes course on the playground area to practice a bit more. He practiced for a few more min-

utes and then felt like he could try again on the higher course.

We chose one of the easiest courses to start on and went slowly. We had our son go in between my husband and I so that one of us would always be on the next platform to help him clip in and out to the next obstacle. The course ended with a short zipline to the ground and then it was back to the main platform.  Not only does the park o er the high ropes course, but also a playground/low ropes course for kids ages 3 - 6. For firsttime climbers or kiddos afraid of heights, this area makes for a great alternative.
