Kerra and Josh were busy parents of three boys with a baby girl on the way when their oldest, four-year-old Decker, complained of a tummy ache. His symptoms seemed to get worse, so they took him to a walk-in clinic where they were immediately sent to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. There, our nephrology team, who are experts in treating kidney conditions, confirmed what the walk-in doctor had suspected: Decker had somehow contracted an infection caused by the bacteria E. coli. That infection had developed into Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, or HUS, a dangerous condition that affects kidney function and the blood’s ability to clot.

Decker had been in the ICU battling HUS for over a week when little brother Locklen, then two, began showing

symptoms of the same illness. Doctors at Monroe Carell found that, like his big brother, he had HUS resulting from an infection caused by the bacteria E. coli.

Both boys were in the hospital for weeks where they underwent dialysis and multiple surgeries. But thanks to the compassionate care provided by Monroe Carell’s multidisciplinary team of experts, first-grader Decker and kindergartener Locklen made remarkable recoveries and today lead full, active lives.

Give Kids Nothing Days, Too

Summer is all around us. It’s in the bees and the warm air, it’s in the unmade beds and the abandoned backpacks. I’m so glad it’s here that I can spit, because if there’s anything this mom likes to do, it’s to hang out on a long, stretchy day with no responsibility. I really love basking with a good book. The chances of doing that are few and far between. My nightstand is proof that books don’t get read. But at least summer gives room to the promise of nothingness. Kids need to know the luxury of nothing.

Remember to build a lot of boringness into your kids’ lives over these next two months if you’re able to. “WHAT?” I hear you shouting at me. We’re all about sports and camps and tutors and our over-scheduled lives! But I say, schedule downtime into your schedule and it just may add a little magic into your kids’ lives.

It’s 2023, and we adults need to make some real changes in our family culture. Over the past 20 years, we’ve bought into the idea that a kid who isn’t involved in endless activities is going to somehow get into trouble. This adult distrust means we can’t leave our kids alone for a second because somehow they’ll end up as failures. But kids need time to themselves and for themselves just as adults do; time for figuring out what they want, even if that means just kicking dirt down a country road.

Summer is here. It’s meant to be a time of respite from the endless lessons and the highly organized day. It’s meant for Wiffle ball in the backyard, freezers full of popsicles and nothing structured for days on end. Boredom yields creativity and imagination. In our highly competitive, keep kids on-track-or-else lives is it possible that a lazy summer is gone for good? If a little downtime isn’t possible and you find yourself in the car as much as you are during the school year, what’s the point of summer at all? And if you’re worried that your kids will become tech potatoes should you announce a “Nothing Day,” newsflash: unplug the TV, the XBox and the Wifi! You’re the parent, your kids live in your house and if your kids complain or get all grouchy on you, so what? It’s an experiment to see where everyone’s at, a type of detox.

I long for those days when my mother told us to just go outside and play and be home before dark. Parents don’t dare do that anymore, but why? Are our environments just too dangerous now? Haven’t we learned everything we need to know about safety and stranger danger and wearing helmets and on and on and on? Really, all of this adult distrust is for the birds. Kids are still kids and they deserve the chance to grow up freely, wildly and with plenty of chances for making mistakes. I urge you to give a little nothingness a try this summer. Let it go, as they say. And as you do that ... find out what your kids are really made of.

Summer is the time when children, teenagers and adults look forward to taking a break from school and enjoying some much-needed fun in the sun. But no summer would be complete without reading! This year, Williamson County Public Library — and libraries all around the nation — will offer summer reading programs. Williamson’s reading program is running now and continues till August 4 with the theme of All Together Now

Summer reading programs are an essential part of your child’s education as they aim to prevent what’s known as “the summer slide,” or, the tendency for kids to lose some of the reading and learning skills they gained throughout the school year.

You and your kids can attend a variety of library programs intended to educate and entertain. Featured events for all ages through Williamson include animal encounters, wildlife and nature educational programs, magic shows, science experiments, music programs and storytellers. Read books to win prizes; the library is offering dedicated challenges for kids, teens and adults.

In counties across Middle Tennessee, participants of all ages are eligible to win prizes including books and fun items in exchange for meeting reading goals. In Williamson County, participants are entered in a raffle to win grand prizes, which include gift certificates to Urban Air and Beats headphones. Williamson has designed the program to be free and open to all, making it accessible to everyone in the community. • STUDIO TENN, Williamson County’s professional regional theater, recently announced its 2023 - 24 season where shows will be held at the company’s Turner Theater at the Factory.

“This is undoubtedly Studio Tenn’s most anticipated season to date,” says Todd Morgan, Studio Tenn’s managing director. “A permanent home is something we’ve been working towards for many years, and we wanted to bring a true celebration of theater featuring multiple ‘iconic’ productions and artists.”

“Studies have shown that doula support in labor may improve outcomes for women and infants,” says Nancy Lipsitz, OB-GYN and co-management leader, growth and innovation for the hospital. The continuous support includes emotional support, information on coping techniques, educational materials, and speaking up on behalf of the laboring mother. irthday parties have changed A LOT over the years and right now, we are in the midst of lots of trends and colorful party themes that kids are going berserk over.

Before you send out the invites, know that the most important thing you can do before you plan your kids’ birthday party is to ask them what kind of party they want. The answer may surprise you and be a little simpler than you thought. Involve your kids in the party-planning process by letting them assist with the invites, choose the color scheme, venue and food.

Simply ask, “What kind of party theme do you want this year” or “Which best friends do you want to invite?” Of course, you are the parent with your own limitations, so communicate that to them so they understand how far they can stretch.

If you and your kiddo are at a loss for ideas, try adding in some of these fun and sweet birthday trends of 2023! They are sure to be a hit and will be the life of your party.

INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES + PARTY FAVORS

Instead of throwing random favors in a bag, have kids interact together with a simple, fun activity or craft they can make-and-take home with them. Parents will love seeing their kids’ creations. If you need more assistance (it can get a little crazy depending on the amount of kids you invite) ask a couple close parent friends to stick around and help.

BKIDDIE MOCKTAILS

Having kiddie mocktails and adult cocktails can add a nice touch to the party. Kids love to pretend and sip on “fancy” drinks. Kiddie beverages can be as simple as a Shirley Temple (Sprite, grenadine syrup, ice and maraschino cherries) or sparkling juice in a plastic, fancy cup. Adults can kick back a bit, too while they sip on their adult beverage and watch the kids play.

VIBRANT COLORS

Ask your birthday kid what their favorite color is and let it pop! Rather than putting together a balloon arch, this year it’s about creating fun photo backdrops with flowers or colorful art and a matching food board. Encourage kids

to gather together and snap a photo with the birthday kid for a nice memory.

SELFIE, ANYONE?

Speaking of photos, selfie booths are super fun and simple for the bigger kids! Thanks to social media, this is a trend that isn’t going away anytime soon. Set up a booth with printed out props glued to popsicle sticks, a cool backdrop (Amazon has a ton!) and a Polaroid camera for instant prints. Add them to a photo book or let the kids take a photo home for a souvenir! If you like both ideas, it’s quite fun to take a photo of the photos then you can have a digital copy or print them out yourself.

ENTERTAINMENT

Animals, balloon artists, magicians and music all make for a great addition. The entertainment doesn’t have to last for the duration of the party, but it can compliment the party theme and be something the kids look forward to.

KEEP IT CLASSY

Classic party themes never get old. Unicorns, race cars, Mickey Mouse, Toy Story and rainbows are all the rage and it has been for years. Safari and carnival themes are great for boy and girl parties with colors and options intriguing to all of the littles; construction zones, car racing themes, sports and hands-on activities for boys; and disco and rock star themes for girls are some fun ideas your kids may be excited about. Add a pinata to match the theme and that’s a wrap!

Successful Pool Parties

Pool parties can be tricky, but also a huge hit if you plan it right. Here are some fun and simple ways to keep it less stressful for you and memorable for your birthday child:

• Ask guests to bring floats, etc.: What’s a pool party without cute floats? Amazon has all kinds of them! Plus, have some extra life vests on-hand. Ask guests to bring a towel, goggles and to come ready to jump in.

• Have extra towels: For the kids who forget to bring one.

• Have an adult supervise the pool at all times: You can never have enough eyes on the pool!

• Decorate with Tiki Torches: Not only are Tiki Torches “bug” torches, they make for a cheap and fun decoration!

• Plan Party Games: Having a game or two in your pocket adds to the excitement and makes a good ice breaker. Go classic with a water balloon toss or organize a chicken fight.

• Create a Playlist: Grab your Bluetooth speaker and create a playlist on your phone with the birthday boy or girl.

What’s a “Fiver” Party?

Struggling to clear out the clutter and at a loss for what your birthday kid actually needs? Consider a “Fiver” Birthday party. Here’s how it works:

Instead of getting a gift from party-goers, you request that each guest contribute $5 to the birthday kid in lieu of gifts. This $5 will then go toward a special gift that the birthday kid gets to pick out themselves.

Parents like Fiver Parties because it takes the stress out of gift-buying and eliminates clutter. It’s a win-win for everyone, that is, if you and the birthday child are in agreement about it.

Before you say, “Yes I am in!” remember to make it clear to your guests when sending out the invitations. Not everyone knows what a Fiver Party is, so be sure to mention wording something like, “Your presence is the only present that we need, but should you want to give something to the birthday kid, please consider giving $5 that they can put toward something special,” and maybe mention what it is your kiddo is saving for. Easy!

Gone Fishing!

Memories with your Dad — searching for the perfect fishing hole, getting your very first fishing pole and your first big catch. As kids, we remember these moments forever, and it’s the little things that stick with us. It’s not about a big boat; or stopping at nothing to bring home a bucket of fish or spending time buying all of that high-quality fishing equipment. Favorite memories come from laughter, simple surprises and just being together. So before you head out on your first fishing trip this summer, remember: keep it simple!

Former legendary Tennessee fisherman Bill Dance — who was taught to fish by his grandfather — loved teaching kids to fish. He always recommended keeping things fun and light in addition to bank fishing so kids can easily get their bearings.

“Small waters are a great place for kids to get hooked on fishing,”

Dance once said. “Make sure you let them use tackle that fits them — not you — and to the size of fish they will catch,” he said. “They will have a ball catching [them] with a worm under a bobber.”

Of course, once you get a kid hooked on get ready for the asks.

“Once you have taught them to catch fish, let the

kids take you fishing and you are there because you are tagging along with them,” Dance said. “If fishing’s slow, show them how to catch a crawfish or skip a rock or let them pick a wildflower to take home to mom. Just remember, it’s all about making memories,” he said.

MOM! DAD! PLEASE STOP YELLING!

As a former teacher, I once asked some elementary students to name something they wish their parents would do for them. In addition to wishing their parents would buy them a particular toy and spend more time with them, all but a few expressed that they wished their parents would stop yelling so much. Known to negatively impact healthy development, yelling is particularly hard on children. At best, yelling may make children obedient for a short while but will not succeed in correcting their behavior or attitude for the long haul.

HAS THERE BEEN AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON YOUR KIDS? The following behaviors can be indicators that yelling has hurt your kids:

You find that your children are quick to anger.

FOR SOME PARENTS ... yelling is an alternative to spanking. What they may not realize is that the emotional damage inflicted by regularly yelling at children can be worse than the physical pain of spanking. Physical pain eventually goes away whereas emotional pain can last indefinitely. Among other things, yelling can lead to increased aggression, verbal and physical.

Laura Markham, Ph.D., author of Peaceful Parents, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting (TarcherPerigree; 2012) says yelling at kids increases the potential for their anxiety and depression. It also has a negative long-term impact on their physical health and increases the potential for other chronic conditions.

HOW TO STOP YELLING

1. ACKNOWLEDGE (TO YOUR CHILDREN) that as leaders of the family you are committed to creating a healthier home environment by ending the toxic yelling so negatively impacting family life.

2. CLEARLY IDENTIFY expectations and personal triggers. Making family members aware of both can be helpful in deterring spontaneous outbursts.

3. ACTIVELY PRACTICE using a moderate volume when speaking. Remind yourself daily that yelling demeans! Misbehavior should be addressed, but not in a way that attacks one’s dignity.

4. AVOID MAKING THREATS. Threats insult, degrade and cause feelings of anger and resentment. Consequences for unacceptable behavior can be appropriate and effective; threats are neither.

5. RECOGNIZE that your frustrations are not always about your children’s behavior. They may simply be undeserving scapegoats. When parents apologize for wrongdoings, children are more likely to do the same.

6. FORGIVE. We all make mistakes, including false assumptions. Once an incident has passed, let it go. Forgiveness is as powerful as praise is motivating. Both can be instrumental in preventing resentments from piling up.

Beatrix Potter is Pure Delight

The Frist Nails the Highlights of Peter Rabbit's Creator

Growing up, I loved Beatrix Potter characters, especially the beloved Peter Rabbit. When I heard a “family friendly” exhibit about her life was coming to the Frist, I knew we had to go. But would it really be entertaining for a toddler-As a kindergarten teacher and mom, I have to tell you YES! My almost 3-year-old LOVED it.

This charming exhibit was organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and is the world’s largest collection of Potter’s artwork. It features a nature-inspired theme with mice, rabbits, and other critters for kids to spot in each gallery space. Just “seek out the asterisk and keep your eyes peeled” for activities made just for littles the sign says upon arriving.

I learned so much about Potter from her personal letters, photographs, diaries and artwork. It showed Potter’s love of animals and early sketches of Peter Rabbit that were inspired by her childhood pet rabbit. My daughter loved seeing all the animals, like Potter’s dog Spot. Seeing the inspiration for her books and learning about her love of science (especially mycology) has given me a new appreciation for her work.

Within the exhibit space, there was flower pot seating in “Mr. McGregor’s garden” for kids (or adults) to sit on and Potter’s books on hand to read. In addition, there were giant spools of thread to sit on. My toddler saw something of interest at every turn and was as bright eyed and bushy tailed as Peter Rabbit himself.

Just past the exhibit is the Martin ArtQuest Gallery that had all Potter-inspired activities for Littles and Bigs alike to enjoy. There were microscopes with different organism under the glass, a puppet show area, a 3D animation station and even an animal and nature stamp area to make your own postcard. In addition, there were sketching stations set up with colored pencils, painting and a giant

saw several tweens and teens sketching, painting, and making postcards along with the toddlers.

If the Beatrix Potter exhibit at the Frist was meant to inspire future scientists, cultivate a love of nature and the arts, and highlight the amazing life of the author all while making art accessible and hands on to all ages— they nailed it! The Frist will host this exhibit until September 17. There was ample parking behind the Frist in the museum parking area and they do validate parking at the ticket booth. Children 18 and under are FREE!
