You Do YOU for Your Kids’ Sake
H
ere you are in the real world with your kids as summer is winding down. You’re a mom or a dad, and the school year approaches. You’re in the pushup-your-sleeves reality of raising kids even as the strife around the world troubles your mind. Safety and back to school are at the top of your mind, but you’re just a regular parent and you don’t have an expensive security detail to protect your kids when they’re away from you. You have YOU, your instincts and the leadership around you, which you are charged to trust — whether you agree with it or not. But something is simmering in the world amid this reality: the question of keeping kids safe — mentally and physically — while getting them well educated. A higher number of parents than ever before are fed up with the do-aswe-say aspect of sending kids to public school today. All together, America’s public schools have lost at least 1.2 million students since 2020, according to a recently published national survey from returntolearntracker.net. But in their defense, public schools have been through it. It’s not their fault the pandemic and remote learning happened. From all of the pandemic stresses, many beloved teachers threw in the towel. Current news shows a new COVID variant circulating; how can we be sure schools won’t simply shut down again or force kids to mask up again? And the reality of masking kids has come home to roost: our littlest ones are behind developmentally and socially. Analytics firm Renaissance Learning’s analysis of nationwide K - 12 test scores show that almost 40% of students across America fell below benchmarks in math last year. Half fell below benchmarks in reading. And those numbers represent a decline across both subjects nationwide, over the previous year. For young kids, the picture isn’t pretty: Half of entering first-graders this year are reading below expectations, vs. 28% pre-pandemic. This new moment is ushering in an unprecedented push to do what you have to do. Raise your kids the way you want to raise them, design lessons around the way your kids learn best and with school books approved by you. I’ve spent a lot of time over the past month reading about the growing desire of parents to homeschool for many of the reasons sited above. Homeschooling at its best allows you to know your children well and to design learning experiences for them based upon their learning styles. Yes, it’s daunting to get started — it may seem impossible — but there’s vast support available here in Middle Tennessee to bolster your efforts. I hope school shootings end. I hope COVID finally disappears from the face of the Earth. I hope schools return to joyful spaces where kids are excited to be and thriving educationally. But until all of this changes, I’m all for homeschooling. Find help for that on page 24. And do your best to stay positive going into the new school year!

FEED BACK QUESTION: “My MIL is constantly sending me unsolicited advice about how to heal non-existent health problems in my 10-month-old baby. How can I tell her enough is enough without starting a fight and harming our already stressful relationship more?”
Gracefully Declining Advice “Sometimes saying nothing is better than saying something you’ll regret later.” Clarice Baker “Better set boundaries now, or it’s gonna be a looooong road of unsolicited advice. If she’s doing it already, she likely will keep doing it. Just politely say, “If we are looking for advice we will ask, thank you for thinking of us.” Since it’s your husband’s mom, maybe it would be better coming from him.”
“Thank you, we will mention it to the pediatrician and see what he thinks.” Jenelle Elizabeth “I’m wondering if your baby has some health issues? If he’s happy and healthy, ignore her. Point out the fact that the baby’s so healthy already. Why would you try to fix something that’s not broken? Pat Lans
“Just because she is sending it doesn’t mean you have to follow it. You can only control how you react. If you don’t want to see it, don’t read/open it.”
“‘I appreciate your concern, and am happy to have this info should we come to need it. But at the moment, Baby is healthy, happy, and so are we. Feel free to save any info you find, and should I need it, I’ll be sure to ask for it.’”

“I would have my husband address this with her since it is his mom and therefore maybe avoid any issues. He needs to phrase it as Alexis (above) stated. Or you could honestly just delete the texts and move on or email.
If she’s discussing it with you then I would just discuss. But if it’s electronic why even mention? She’s just trying to help. Honestly just ignore it if you don’t want it. Not sure why this is such an issue.” Laura O’Brien Mills “A simple, ‘I will file this away in case we need it one day’ and move on.” Dawn McQuilkin Newton “Thanks for this amazing information! Very Interesting, for sure. Luckily, (insert baby’s name here) pediatrician says we are healthy and well, and we will be continuing our current food routines because of that! (Insert excited smile and clap here).” Katie Hanback “Just graciously say thank you and ignore everything she says.”

Take Charge, But Be Nice, Too • Don’t take it personally • Use humor then change the subject • Use silence: When a comment is made, look at your MIL but say nothing. After a few moments, change the subject. • Present a united front: You and your husband approach together and let her know that while you appreciate her insights and suggestions, the two of you have determined what parenting style works best for you, and you do not really need her input. life with kids by Susan Swindell Day
Back-to -School 411 It’s been a rough couple of years for educators, kids and parents, but time marches on. Be ready to meet the challenges ahead come the first day of school
T
he new school year is here, and while your kids may lament that fact (and you not so much), it’s so much more helpful to make a plan for their success! Here’s helpful advice for a smooth start:
BACKPACKS
Plenty of kids will trudge through their days taking their backpack with them just so they don’t have to stop at their locker. That’s a lot of carrying around. Know that the backpack shouldn’t weigh more than one-fifth of your child’s weight says the American Academy of Pediatrics’ spokesperson, Amna Husain, M.D. Check your child’s backpack daily to help him ease his load!
SPECIAL HEALTH NEEDS
Does your child have asthma or a food allergy or require medication at school? Most schools insist that inhalers, EpiPens and other medical needs be kept with the school nurse. Make sure your kids always know where their needs are.
SCHOOL LUNCHES
Schools provide lunch menus through their lunch payment portals. Review the lunches and talk about healthy eating and choices. Some kids prefer to bring their lunch and can make them themselves.
18 august 2022
Also, make a point to have lunch with your child at school. You’ll need to be “cleared” in order to do this, so be sure to sign up for that volunteer badge.
STUDY AND SCREEN TIME
Husain says homework MUST be separated from screen time unless the work requires a computer. Even then kids can flip around to content they’d rather see! Establish homework rules you can all agree on, i.e., 20 minutes of work, a 10-minute break.
KNOW THE KIDS
The single best thing you can do for your child is to know their friends and know their friends’ parents. When your child knows you are involved and in the know, they’re much less likely to make risky decisions. Also, know that most kids need help making friends at first. Be the “ice breakers” by introducing yourself to other parents from your kids’ classes, set up get-togethers and be open to invites.
HOME ALONE
A kid should be at least 12, Husain says, in order to stay home alone. Items like Ring doorbells have become go-tos for busy parents. Make sure your child can reach you by phone, and in case of an emergency, what they should do. Also make sure your child has the phone number of a neighbor should anything come up.
nashvilleparent.com
Be Hands On, Parents!
Easing First-Day-ofSchool Fears
BE INTERESTED
in what your kids are studying at school. Some parents enjoy taking a “we’re studying this together” approach, literally working on every subject together. Your involvement in your child’s learning depends on the age of your child, of course, and their aptitude, but no matter what, always find a moment to check in with your child about what they’re studying in school and bring what you know to the table.
(Local Moms weigh-in)
ORGANIZATION
is a challenge for ALL kids. Beginning at a young age, encourage your child to keep a homework assignment notebook or folder. Often, elementary school grades will have assignments listed for the week on the teacher’s smart board or the teacher will send an email home. Go through each of your kids’ backpacks with (with your child) so they get used to this routine and learn the ins-and-outs of what needs to be kept and worked on and what can be tossed or handed to you.
CREATE ROUTINES
when it comes to homework and projects. Make a plan that works for each of your kids and stick with it. With after-school activities cutting into free time at home, your week nights will start shaping up as the first few weeks of school progress. The good news is, kids love routines and knowing what is expected of them — you just have to get it started. If you want them to shower the night before school and lay out their outfits for the next day, put that into their routines. Your child’s personality and strengths will come into play in knowing what you can expect of each of your children each day.
Be there for reassurances and hugs! Rebecca Paige, Gallatin “Slowly start talking about it as a good thing to do. Help to get him excited by taking him to buy supplies, picking out his own things.” Amanda Nichols, Nashville “My daughter isn’t very excited about it right now, but kids sort of live in the moment, don’t they? At supper she complains even though it may be her favorite food. Then she sits down and talks about how delicious it is. So, until school actually starts back, I’ll just have to listen to the moaning and complaining. I have to work really hard to keep a positive attitude — hoping one day it wears off on her.” Lindsey Benson, Nashville
GET AHEAD OF THE GAME Make bedtime count. A week before school starts, establish your child’s “school bedtime” and wake-up time. Practice setting alarms. Start mornings right. Be up before the kids so you can have a moment to yourself. Get breakfast going as well as lunches. Let your kids wake themselves, but check in that they are up and at’em. Stay off your phone; watch the clock. Don’t minimize fears. Acknowledge and validate your kids’ uneasy feelings about the first day and let them know that EVERYONE has first-day jitters. Make sure kids know the drill. Make sure your child knows the right bus they’re taking or what the plan is for their pick up (car pool) and they have any notes they need per school requirements about transportation.
“Talk about it. Even add it into actual playtime. It’s a great time to teach lifelong lessons here — raising hands, washing hands, sharing, asking for assistance. Everything he takes with him as an independent person is important. Remember, praise him when he deserves praise!” Amy Schlosser, Bellevue “Take a field trip to the school! Teachers are usually working in their classrooms the week before school starts. Stop in and say, “Hi!” and of course, make it to any back-to-school celebrations your school may have. It’s fun for the kids to see everybody again.” Julia Drown, LaVergne “This isn’t first day, but my daughter has generalized anxiety and my son becomes overstimulated and misses me during the day. I send them both to school with a small notebook so they can write down what’s bothering them at school to discuss at night when they get home. I did this last year and it really helped. I’ll do it again this year.”

By Susan Swindell Day “I’ve heard from many parents with a great deal of concern: You love your kids more than anyone. We need you to partner with us. It will require the efforts of all of us together to keep schools safe. We can be vigilant and manage to protect the innocence of our kids.” — Governor Bill Lee

Moving Forward From Here Just as last year’s school season was wrapping up, the shootings in Uvalde, Texas happened, exposing deep weaknesses in human responses and security systems. As the new school year gets underway, Tennessee schools are stepping up to the safety challenge, and engaging the community to help, too.

school safety Lee’s order, which essentially doubles down on preexisting school safety protocols, calls for an increase of school safety plan audits. It encourages hiring more school resource officers (SROs) and also creates a school safety resource and engagement guide for parents while encouraging them to take part in community discussions with law enforcement about securing schools. The order directs state agencies to provide more guidance on working with existing safety laws including school safety plans, improving school building security and reaching into staff to help with safety and mental health issues. All parents and school personnel are being asked to ensure school building security is in place with a single point of entry and multiple points of exit; securing access points; and reporting suspicious activity. “This order requires more frequent, unannounced, security assessments at every school in Tennessee to ensure that back doors are locked and that protocols are being followed,” Lee says. “We can’t take for granted the fundamental practices that make a space secure.”

Be Open, But Age-Appropriate When Talking with Your Kids
T
he American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says parents are in the best position to help kids cope with the awareness they need to stay safe in a dangerous situation. In talking with your kids, keep their ages in mind. KINDERGARTEN & EARLY ELEMENTARY AGES Guard against giving young children too much information, says the AAP. You can inform your kids that their school and home are generally safe and that adults are available to protect them. Young kids respond well to simple examples of school safety like reminding them the exterior doors are locked, just as you have your home doors locked at night. UPPER ELEMENTARY AND EARLY MIDDLE SCHOOL AGES These ages may be more vocal in asking questions about whether they are truly safe and what is being done at their school. They may need assistance separating reality from fantasy. You can share the information with them about your school’s safety plan and any other relevant communication to ease their mind. UPPER MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL AGES These ages may have strong and varying opinions about causes of violence in school and society. In talking with them, you can stress the role that kids have in maintaining safe schools by following the school’s safety guidelines (not providing building access to strangers, reporting strangers on campus, reporting threats to school safety made by other students, for example).

is at the centerpiece
to help parents and kids anonymously report suspicious activity
Communication is Everything While all Tennessee schools are working with the state to better secure their facilities, Lee’s plan is based on building better communication with parents, school employees, law enforcement and the community to help in identifying and notifying about concerns. In Rutherford County, Safe Schools Director Patty Oeser agrees that communication is everything when it comes to safety in schools. “I want the kids to know, whether it’s in-person or through the county website (Rutherford uses STOP!T, an online app to empower the community to anonymously report anything of concern to school officials), they can report things. It’s a team effort. We can’t fix things unless we know,” she adds. In Williamson County, every visitors must show a photo identification before being allowed inside a school. This includes all teachers and administrators who must wear i.d. badges at all times. “We take safety seriously in Williamson County Schools,” says Michael Fletcher, security director for Williamson County Schools Safety and Security. “We have a School Resource Officer (SRO) in each building and two in our larger high schools; we all say it and it really is true: if you see something, say something,” he adds. Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) does not have SROs at its elementary schools, but aims to have two officers per high school and one per middle school. Meanwhile, the school district’s security officers rotate throughout the district, responding to incidents as needed, according to MNPS spokesman Sean Braisted. Part of Lee’s executive order calls for local law enforcement to receiv new active shooter training standards. It is key for officers faced with impossible situations to have confidence in their training because, as Lee says, bravery and preparedness go hand-in-hand. With news trickling out of Uvalde that the law enforcement response was less than stellar, it’s important to remain vigilant as the school year gets underway. In the meanwhile, it’s key for parents to focus on maintaining a normal routine when school begins and to limit discussions and viewings of uncomfortable or scary discussions about difficult events. It’s OK to review safety procedures with your kids and to help them identify at least one adult at school or in the community to go to if they feel at all threatened or at risk of danger.

Homeschool Goes Mainstream Shape your kids’ education the way you want to? Use the curriculum of your choosing? Know how your child learns best? Yes. Yes. And Yes.
F
By Janie Snyderman rustrated by the excessive quiz-and-test strategy found in Common Core State Standards a few years ago in public schools, and with the too-high price tag found in private education, many Tennessee parents defected to homeschooling. The mass exodus continues today with nods to the pandemic, forced vaccinations and masking and the question of what’s actually being taught in schools today. Parents are stepping up to meet the needs

of their kids their own way. “We’re heading up our kids’ education,” says Jessica Brown, a mom of three, ages 11, 9 and 6. Brown home educated her two oldest last year and is turning in an “Intent to Homeschool” for her kindergartener this fall, as well. Like many parents of school-age kids, Brown grew dissatisfied with the content of instruction in public schools and in trying to make sense of it all. Making the switch to homeschool wasn’t easy. “I went through a kind of values-based soul searching,” Brown says. “What do I want? What do I want for my kids? I have to admit, I
nashvilleparent.com
was scared. Would I be able to be a meaningful teacher? Could I do the math, or would I need to get outside help? And what about sports teams for the boys? While I know public schools are supposed to allow home-school kids to play sports with them, would they really? Or would they let them try out and then quietly cut them? Plus my husband and I both work — how on earth would we do this?” she fretted. The hand twisting continued into the school year. “In 2020, I dreaded sending my kids back to school — and our school has great people in it! Great teachers. It would have been so much
back to school more convenient to just keep doing what we were doing,” she says. But by Christmas, the Browns had finally had enough, and Jessica took her cue from her sons. “The boys were tired and hapless about school — what a loss! They never talked about anything they were learning, they didn’t want to read. It was nights of flashcards. If I could sum up their education at that point, I would say it was all about flash cards,” Brown says. They decided the boys would not return after Christmas break. Instead of delivering the kids to their brick-and-mortar school one brisk January day, Brown walked into the school office and delivered the “Intent to Homeschool” forms. “It was the scariest moment,” Brown says. “I was really stepping out and putting myself on the line. But it also was one of the bravest moments I’ve had,” she adds. She was taking a leap of faith with a determination to manage her boys’ education with her husband, sharing the teaching duties and getting closer to their sons. They wanted to know just how much their boys actually had retained of their educations so far. They needed to know what the boys needed now, and where they should start. They felt alone at first, but it didn’t last long. “Support came really fast,” Brown says. “I easily connected with other home-school moms who congratulated me on taking back my kids and who were eager to help me be successful. It was astonishing, actually.” “My boys are both really smart,” Brown says. “But they had been slogging through their days when they were enrolled at school. When we told them that we were going to homeschool them they were shocked — and thrilled.”
Numbers Don’t Lie Today, as many as 2.5 million of the nation’s 77 million school-age kids are home educated, and the number is growing. There has been a significant increase in those figures from 2019 to 2021. One of the highest concentrations of home-schooling families is in the South, and the number of them is growing as more and more parents choose to take education into their own hands. These parents want control to teach what they want. They want to take time with their kids, helping them embrace hands-on learning for real without the derailing influences of whatever is going on in the U.S.
politically. The long-ago assumption that homeschooling is somehow weird and different has evolved into home-schooled kids are lucky and advanced. The truth is, homeschoolers get into top-ranked colleges and graduate at higher rates. Plus, study results from the National Home Education Research Institute show that home-schooled children perform better on academic tests than public school children.
How Parents Do It Some home-schooling parents put together personalized education programs themselves, while others purchase curriculum and other resources. According to the Home School Legal Defense Association, some parents take the traditional approach using textbooks and workbooks to teach writing, grammar and spelling through repetition. There’s also the “classical” approach model which emphasizes grammar and logic through the study of great works of Western literature. “We definitely were not completely ready,” says Brown. “At first — as I tried to figure out my teaching process — I wrote two weeks’ worth of lesson plans from sourcing books at the library. That got a bit time consuming! Then I settled on the Robinson Curriculum, and it’s been fantastic,” she adds. “I do think it’s hard if one of you is not a stay-at-home parent,” Brown says. “Luckily, I have flexibility with my job and can work from home, so I work in the morning from 7 to 10 and then often at night, too. The boys have work they can do without me and then we check in. Lots of times we go to the park just to get out, and I take them on field trips all of the time. We talk about it all,” she says. “I find ways to get my work done, and so far it’s worked out.” But what about sports teams and that little thing known as socializing? “My older boys both play travel soccer, so they have a lot of friends from that. My boys have plenty of friends, that’s not anything I ever really worry about, and I invite kids over a lot because that’s how I get my breaks!”
Questions and Answers Many parents want to homeschool their kids but doubt they have the patience or skill to do it. That’s where tutorial schools and co-ops can play a role. The Middle Tennessee Home Education Association’s (MTHEA) website lists them, and they exist to partner with parents in education. These options provide support
nashvilleparent.com
and resources such as mom-to-mom support meetings and mentors, academic support and competitions, daily opportunities for homeschooling families and more. “My biggest concern was about my boys’ records and making sure they are at grade-level or higher,” Brown says. “I decided to sign up with an umbrella school since that’s how they help,” she adds. MTHEA lists numerous umbrella schools, including Home Life Academy which guides home-schooling parents with record keeping, transcripts, grade reporting and more.” Janie Snyderman is a mom and freelance writer.
Get Started with HOME-SCHOOLING Getting started with homeschooling requires a leap of faith. Here’s help:
FIRST STEPS: 1. Register your child with either the local superintendent or a Church-Related School 2. Give your school notice that you will be homeschooling 3. Build your team (join MTHEA; locate a support group, etc.) 4. Research and select curriculum for your child 5. Gather information on homeschooling and become informed on its legal aspects
