wEIGHING Private SchoolS Wanting the best possible education for your child is a no brainer, but coming to terms with the cost takes time.
M
iddle Tennessee parents have various reasons for seeking private educations for their children — the popularity of private schools has always been based on the idea that they offer something better than public schools, i.e. better discipline, higher morals, better test scores and facilities. But are Middle Tennessee's numerous private schools really "better"? That might depend on what you want your kids to learn. "I want my children to go to private school for the Christian values and teachings," says Linda Slinsky, who's laying the groundwork for her preschooler's entry to kindergarten. "To me, that makes a school better, and there's just a mentality of excellence in private schools that can't be beat," she adds. It's true that private schools offer smaller class sizes, in depth art, music and other enrichment programs including foreign language courses as young as kindergarten, but private schools will cost you and parents have to be creative in finding ways to fund it. "Affording private school will not come easily," says Melissa Dochat, who along with her husband is eyeing a loan to pay for tuition. "We had several heart to hearts about it until we realized educating our kids is the most important thing we'll ever do." On the fence about your child's schooling? Do your own research and look into all the pros and cons of private schools before making any moves! — Susan Day
