BOARDING SCHOOL: IS IT FOR YOUR CHILD?
Students who go to boarding school are the ones who want the experience, who are looking for something more.
W
ant your child to experience freedom and independence, meet people from other places with other viewpoints and learn to think and act for themselves? Consider sending him to boarding school, says Julie Harris, director of admissions at The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tenn. (thewebbschool.com; profile on page 32), and also president of SABS (the Southeastern Association of Boarding Schools; sabs. org). "From practicing basic responsibilities to learning social engagement on their own, students are encouraged to think and act for themselves in a way that facilitates the transition to college and eventually into their adult lives," she adds. According to The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), 70 percent of students say attending boarding school helped them develop self-discipline, maturity, independence and the ability to think critically, which made their college transition easier. But can you afford it?
6 • fall 2015
"Affording a boarding school does require sacrifices, but families may be surprised to learn that they may qualify for a financial aid reward," she adds. The Webb School also offers a new in-state tuition rate for Tennessee residents to make it more affordable. Often, parents worry about sending kids away; could it cause a drifting apart? To the contrary, Harris says, many boarding school parents claim relationships with their kids improve because of boarding school. "Students miss their families and often call home to share exciting news about their day," Harris says. "When they come home for weekends or breaks, they want to spend quality time with their families," she adds. And as for the notion that boarding school could be punishment threatened by frustrated parents, nothing could be further from the truth, Harris says. "In reality, boarding schools are communities full of life and vibrancy where students can be happy to belong," she says.

PAYING FOR PRIVATE
M
any misconceptions abound about getting help with paying for private school. Juliet Douglas, director of admissions at University School of Nashville (USN; usn.org; profile on page 32), says that it begins “with the assumption that your family makes too much money to qualify for help.” She adds many families believe that since they’re middle class they don’t qualify for help. “In fact, a significant amount of our financial aid dollars go to families who fall into the middle income bracket,” adds Douglas. She also states that all the financial aid given at USN is need-based, awarded after a family has gone through the financial aid application process and has demonstrated financial need — and it’s a surprisingly easy process, too. Douglas adds that the important thing to re-
member is to “start the financial aid application process early; don't assume you don't qualify for financial aid; and know each individual school's aid policies and deadlines because they vary widely." Many schools require parents to submit an online form that outlines their financial picture; typically it’s a branch of the National Association of Independent Schools, called SSS (School & Student Services). The online form is the Parents' Financial Statement (PFS). To learn more about the PFS, an online webinar is on the SSS site at sssbynais. org/parents under "What's New." For more support, call SSS at 800-344-8328. The Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS; taistn.com), the state affiliate of the NAIS and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), urges families to connect with the schools they're interested in to find out about available individual plans as need-based financial aid and merit awards may be available. Many different avenues can help you afford private school: scholarships, financial aid, loan programs and payment plans through the school itself, but options don’t end there. FinAid, an award-winning website offering financial aid information, advice and tools, should be looked at. There, you can fill out applications, get questions answered and learn about savings plans, scholarships and loans. You’ll also learn that you can find financial support in several broad categories including free scholarship lotteries, federal and state government aid, student profilebased aid, aid for elementary and secondary school as well as aid for specific activities and innovative programs. Visit finaid.org to learn more.
SAME-SEX EDUCATION Can your child benefit from an all-girls or all-boys school?
T
he pros and cons of single-sex education have been debated for years. And while some argue that single-sex schools provide an environment where boys and girls are free to learn without the distraction of the opposite sex or unfair stereotypes, others claim that single-sex classes interfere with the development of important real-life social skills. Regardless, there are only three single-sex private schools in Middle Tennessee: Harpeth Hall (harpethhall.org; profile on page 18) and St. Cecilia Academy (stcecilia.edu) for girls, and Montgomery Bell Academy (montgomerybell.edu; profile on page 23) for boys. If you're considering one of these schools for your child, consider the following: • Students in single-sex classes are free to interact and learn without the distraction of the opposite sex. • Single-sex classes may break down stereotypes that the coeducational classroom may inadvertently reinforce, says author Leonard Sax, founder of the National Association for Single-Sex Public Education. For example, the stereotype that girls don't perform as well as boys in math and science may cause girls to hold back in those classes or not take those classes for fear of underachieving. However, University of California (Los Angeles) research cited on the Harpeth Hall website reveals that at the start of college, girls' school graduates rate their confidence in their abilities in math and computer skills more than 10 percent higher than their coed counterparts, and they are three times more likely than them to consider pursuing a career in engineering. Additionally, 13 percent of all-girls school graduates intend to major in math or science — significantly more than the 2 percent cited for coed counterparts. • Do school-age kids need to be in coed classrooms for the real-life social experiences gained there? That's the concern of many adults on the "con" side of same-sex schools. To mix boys and girls together while still maintaining their same-sex philosophies,

Harpeth Hall and MBA hold social events together in addition to collaborating on artistic endeavors such as an annual fall musical. • Do boys and girls really learn differently? Read Boys and Girls Learn Differently! (Jossey-Bass; 2010) by Michael Gurian. This book delves deeply into brain research showing the hard-wired differences between boy and girl learning, flying in the face of the nature vs. nurture debate. • Are there profound differences between how males and females learn? Read Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know About the Emerging Science of Sex Differences (Harmony; 2006). The book by Leonard Sax is filled with anecdotes and research confirming learning differences between the sexes. • Learn more about all-boys schools: The International Boys' Schools Coalition, theibsc.org. • Learn more about all-girls schools: The National Coalition of Girls' Schools, ncgs.org.

In fifth grade, Matt hit a wall on his learning. He had trouble keeping up with assignments at his private school and frequently would struggle with homework until nine o’clock p.m. His parents noticed a lack of attention that made it difficult for Matt to focus and he was easily distracted. Desperate to help Matt succeed, they learned about homeschooling and decided to give it a try. His mother, Charmaine, took the lead in educating Matt day to day and delivered the curriculum.
LearningRx Nashville/Brentwood
At first, Matt did better and seemed happier being homeschooled. He was on track with all his levels and his grades improved. After three years, though, he hit another wall. This time, it was tougher to break through the barrier to gain Matt’s attention. Charmaine had to constantly redirect Matt’s focus to keep him on task. If she didn’t remind him to complete an assignment—it wouldn’t get done.
(615) 953-8899
His father, Steve, thought perhaps it wasn’t a learning problem but maybe Matt needed encouragement and accountability to be more disciplined in his studies. He and Charmaine tried taking a harder line to get Matt to focus which helped slightly, but still left gaps in their son’s learning. He doubted whether they were providing Matt the best education for a successful future.
LearningRx Murfreesboro
Through Christian Radio, they heard about LearningRx Brain Training Center in Murfreesboro as a solution to help students improve their cognitive skills and treat the cause—not the symptoms—of learning difficulties. “LearningRx started with an assessment and it clearly identified Matt’s problem and it wasn’t a lack of discipline,” says Steve.

Essentially, Matt had to learn how to learn. Once he started brain training, the Herrons noticed changes immediately including Matt’s ability to focus and complete assignments. His confidence increased and his self-esteem improved. Steve explains, “After the first few months, every doubt I had was gone. LearningRx is a Godsend. We value the investment we have made to payoff in higher education and setting our son on the right course.” The Herron’s participated in the partner program training with Matt three days a week at home in addition to one-on-one sessions with a brain trainer. Through his close involvement, Steve appreciates a different perspective in the method and brain training. Steve says he hasn’t seen any kind of training achieve such great results. “This works. Do it and you’ll see results in a month or two.”
