Students working in the library at University School Nashville (USN), located at 2000 Edgehill Ave. in Nashville.

P

arents everywhere appreciate all of the lengths that schools — and especially educators — have gone through over the last two years to educate children during the pandemic. It's been a rough road for kids and families. Some say that the pandemic has education in crisis, but one thing is clear: children need educating and it's up to parents to make that happen at home and at school. According to Ed Choice, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to understanding and pursuing a K-12 education system that empowers families, about 41 percent of parents are more likely to prefer a private education for their children post pandemic. If you are looking for a private school

for your kids, you have a lot to consider, including: Learning needs Does your child have special interests, aptitudes or learning needs? Sense of community What role do you hope the school community will play in your family’s life? Expense How much can you afford to spend on education? Commute Is it reasonable for your family to commute to school on a daily basis for several years? Private School Directory

Your Involvement Your child's best chance for educational success begins with you. No matter which school you decide on for your kids, you will do best to be an education champion. The U.S. Department of Education says parents who show interest in their child’s education can spark a stronger enthusiasm in their child to learn, as well as leading their child to the reality that learning can be enjoyable as well as rewarding. Being involved in your child's education — knowing his teachers, what's being studied and knowing your child's friends — are the three main keys to supporting your child's journey at school and home. Here are additional considerations to bear in mind as you prep for the private school search.

3. CHECKLIST

Schools require an application before making a decision. Here are the items that are typically required for your child, although all While you may think that affording private school is impossible for schools are different. If you feel you still need help with anything, for their kids: contact the admission office of the school you’re applying to. • CLASS SIZE: The kids get more one-on-one help and develop strong relationships with their teachers. • RELIGIOUS: If you are a Christian, your family values can be extended in the private school you choose. • FOCUS ON LEARNING: Not necessarily on testing; broader academic offerings. • STRONG CONNECTION BETWEEN PARENTS AND SCHOOL: Whole families are recognized on purpose at private schools. Kids learn that they are part of a community of learning that matters to the whole school. • ENVIRONMENT: Some parents feel that some school environments and cultures may be more condusive to learning than others.

5. INTERVIEWS

Many schools will want to interview your child. Be sure to help him with this by doing “mock” interviews at home and helping him to put together his responses. A few questions you can ask your child that he should be prepared for are: "What are your three favorite things about yourself?" "What do you do when you're having a hard time with a subject like math or English?" and "How do you spend your free time?" As for the interview YOU may have with a potential school, do your homework about them and also ask questions that focus on educational aspects and the areas that are important to you for your child. Consider asking the same questions at each school to will help compare more easily. Susan Day is editor of this publication and a mom of four.

In most of their classes, your one-ofa-kind student will receive one-on-one instruction that’s personalized for their needs, boosts confidence, and builds critical thinking skills. Whether your student needs to catch up, get ahead, or simply take a break from the traditional school setting, Gateway Academy is where your child can help direct their education, learn at their pace, and pursue their unique pathway to academic and life success! As a locally owned and operated private school, we have helped countless Middle Tennessee students since 1985 reach their academic goals. For students who need to make up a class they did not pass, or even lighten their course load for the next school year, we offer fully accredited Course Credit Recovery and Courses for Credit during the summer!
