DAY BY DAY

Everybody’s Game for Baby Naming

Ababy during the holidays is a lot to manage on top of everything else, but many of us have been there. With my first child, in December, I didn’t know if I’d have a boy or girl (I secretly I wanted a girl), but pretty much from the moment I found out I was expecting, the name game began. Baby naming is a full-fledged industry, everybody from aunts and uncles to cousins will get involved if you let them. What’s so important about a name? It’s important enough that plenty of parents keep it private these days. Names matter.

Old Hollywood knew. Studio heads were never going to put “Archibald Leach” on a movie marquee, so his name became Gary Grant. Norma Jean Mortenson became Marilyn Monroe. And name changing became absolutely common place if you wanted to become a star. It continues today. Lady Gaga ditched Stefani Gemanotta. The stuff of John Legend might not have happened if he’d kept John Stephens. In the oh-soimportant naming of your baby, remember: they can change it.

In labor, waiting to deliver my baby, my husband and I worked on a list. We had a bunch of boy names we liked and a bunch of girl names. We said them outloud, tried them out. But we couldn’t settle and we weren’t serious and everything got scribbled out. Finally I said, let’s see the baby and then we’ll know.

And in the back of my mind was a memory. I was wandering through a children’s section in a bookstore long before I was expecting and saw, “By Alexandra Day” on the cover of the Good Dog, Carl boardbooks. Alexandra Day was the author (but guess what? The author’s real name is Sandra Darling!). I thought that was the most beautiful name I’d ever seen in print. (You DO have to write it out, at least a million times, in your fanciest hand writing). So when I finally got to peek at my little holiday bundle, I said, “Oh! This is Alexandra!” And so she was and so she is. And it’s her real name.

Baby two was a boy, and because I loved that “E.R.” actor Noah Wyle, my little Noah arrived right on time one cold November evening, long before everybody started naming their boys Noah. Baby three’s name honored a dear friend, only, we didn’t think about the monogram. We named him Tucker Radford Day which equals TRD. Just shy of one initial to spell something pretty nasty, my boy stared hard at the initials as they were stitched on a ballcap in a Lids store. He never wore that cap. Sorry, Tuck.

Baby four and again, we didn’t know! Here we were in the delivery room again with lists. Then my father-in-law called in and said with no prompting, “You know, Thomas Jefferson is a good name.” We skipped the Jefferson, but Thomas it was and has always been.

It’s personal, naming names. Mixing first, middle and last names. And nobody’s shy about sharing their opinions about names, so I get keeping it secret. Here in the south, we use a lot of double names: Ann Lane, Mary Clare, Jack Wyatt, John Michael. But there’s no hard and fast rule you have to adhere to. Old-fashioned names are popular at the moment, so take a good look at your ancestral tree. In the meantime, your baby’s name can come from your life ... with good reason ... named because something was happening in the moment and it struck you. Or just wait to see that darling face. And maybe it will come to you. And then he’ll grow up to be rich and famous. And change it!

FEED BACK

Help! What do I do when my toddler hits me in the face and I want to swat back?

How to NOT REACT if You Get Hit

READERS SHARE OPINIONS

“I say, ‘Ouch!’ Or cry if the pain is really bad. By honestly reacting to the pain, it shows the child what hitting does to people.”

Deborah Hockhousen Wilson

“Take his hand and say, ‘Touch nice,’ and ask him often to touch your arm or face nicely in a positive voice. Repeat each time he tries to hit you.”

Heather Bostick-Smith

“First of all, they don’t hear the word, ‘don’t,’ so you have to tell them what you want them to do, not what you don’t want. Change your tone to something firm and say, ‘No hitting. Be gentle,’ while holding their hands and then showing them what gentle hands look like. Toddlers respond pretty well to redirection. Please don’t slap your child in the face. That only reinforces the negative behavior you’re trying to avoid. Also avoid saying, ‘Please.’ I know it’s splitting hairs, but you’re telling them what to do, not asking. There are times to be firm and direct. This is one of them.”

“Not reacting is the same as doing nothing to teach them to stop. You firmly say, ‘No hitting,’ with a stern look. If it continues, you catch the hand as it comes at you and again say, ‘No hitting.’ Happens again, grab the hand, turn them with hand behind them and march them to their room or Time Out spot to calm

down and then talk to them. If it continues, you may have to rethink your stance on spanking; some kids need it and it may only take one time. In the mean time, figure out why they are hitting, what are they unable to communicate (at age 2 communication is a huge struggle), and teach them better ways to communicate. Remember: fix the problem now, because they only get bigger and hit harder. Once in school, there is risk of suspension or expulsion, and if they hit the wrong person (or the more forgiving person too much), assault charges.”

Cameron

“For me, saying, ‘Gentle hands, gentle hands,’ in a sweet voice and then showing him how to use his hands gently on my face works. It won’t be instant but over time he knows what the phrase means and he will change his behavior now when I say it.”

Meredith Cleaves Wogan

“For all three of mine, a firm, ‘No ma’am/no sir!’ with a stern voice and catch/hold their hand as they are attempting to hit quickly did the trick. They learn to understand your firm boundary, that you are not pleased with the choice, won’t allow that behavior and they learn from your self control and respect as well.”

“Keep it short and simple. In the moment say, ‘Hitting and hurting are not allowed.’ It might also be time to introduce Time Out. If he is hitting because he’s mad, trying to correct him when he’s agitated isn’t going to work. After he is out of Time Out and has calmed down, talk about what he should do next time he is mad at someone because, ‘Hitting and hurting is not allowed.’”

Miranda Lyn

“Many have suggested the stern voice of ‘No hitting,’ and holding their hand away. This is a good starting point. If the behavior continues, then a Time Out using one minute for every year of their age will help. You may need to teach them what this looks like by continuing to return them to their Time Out spot. Tell the child it is not OK to hit. Place them in their spot and start a timer. Repeat this until they learn that this is a consequence of inappropriate behavior. Once their time is up, explain again that we don’t hit and talk about how much it hurts to be hit. Have them learn to apologize, o er forgiveness and then hug it out to end it. This has been the best method that I’ve used for all of mine, including my stubborn-just-like-me middle child. Most of all, good luck because raising kids to be kind humans is so hard.”

Nashville’s “Things to Do” family calendar continues its award-winning legacy that began many years ago. Michael Aldrich, current Managing and Entertainment Editor for Day Communications, delivers “Things to Do” each month. Additionally, Aldrich scored a Gold editorial award for his “Dad Beat” Editor’s Note which appears in print every other month.

Nashville Parent and its sister publications Rutherford Parent and Williamson Parent are no stranger to awards. The publication — which

launched in 1993 — has won upteen awards from the country’s top regional magazine trade organization since its inception. Led by longtime Editor in Chief Susan Day, the magazines continue to win awards for excellence in editorial and design.

“We are steeped in the Nashville goings on, and we’ve been here through the amazing transformation from small town to ‘IT’ town,” Day says. “We are thrilled to deliver the highest quality content possible in the calendar of events category and in all we do. There’s so much going on in this town, we really work hard to keep up! Many try to compete, but we keep our nose to the grind stone. And, as parents ourselves, we recognize the unique needs of parents and kids. It’s a niche we understand and love,” adds Day.

Ultimate Holiday Prep

It’s time to create the magic!

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we pull off amazing feats, wiping ourselves out in the process. Here’s a roadmap to help make the madness a little easier for a merrier season!

EARLY NOVEMBER AND ONWARD

• MAKE A BUDGET + MARK YOUR CALENDAR

It’s the least merry part of your planning, but consider gifts, cards, decorations, travel, baking, meals and outfits. Next, look at your November and December calendars and mark down engagements like school events, parties and other commitments and search for breathing room for YOU.

• TRIM the TREE(S)

You may be tempted to have an elaborately decorated tree this year but remember, with kids, the BEST ornaments are the handmade ones made from popsicle stick projects and more that the kids made. Joanna Gaines, DIY influencer extraordinaire, says if you want an elegant tree, do it. But also, put up a family tree so the kids can do their own, too.

• GIFTS

Try, try, try again to not leave gift buying until the last minute. Make a list of everyone you and the kids are giving to and brainstorm ideas together. If your family has a Secret Santa tradition or a gift tradition with family far away, get that organized now.

• CHRISTMAS CARDS + PHOTO SHOOT

Getting the cards done early is key! You don’t have to have a fancy shoot, but you can take a cute photo of the kids, or use something from your past year’s family travel.

• PICK YOUR BAKING/DECORATING DATES

Some people prefer decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving, others wait until the turkey is gone. In any event, to make it fun for yourself, pick baking and decorating dates on your calendar during the first week of December (and set up a deep cleaning of your home post-Thanksgiving). Regarding decorating, be sure to include your kids who may love this activity. Then, on decorating day, wear a holiday-themed outfit, turn on the carols and bring on the boxes! Also, be sure to stock up on batteries for your lights and displays.

DECEMBER UP TO NEW YEARS

• FAMILY WARDROBES

HANG ON TO TRADITIONS!

Remember, your family traditions are what make the holiday wonderful. Don’t reinvent the season, lean into what you know. “We count down the days, just to experience it nearly exactly as we always have,” Joanna Gaines told People magazine. “It is so comfortable, familiar and perfectly nostalgic that, frankly, we have no desire to improve upon it at all!”

What about matching pajamas? Are they necessary or just costly hype? And what of the ugly Christmas sweaters? Does your teen need one for a party? Do you? Get these items taken care of before it becomes a problem. And remember, kids grow quickly, so make sure their dressy kahki pants are long enough and that the shoes still fit. And what about you? What are YOU wearing to church on Christmas Eve? With advanced prep you don’t have to wear last year’s outfit.

• HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

Take advantage of the first week of the holiday season by doing some holiday-themed activities. Decorate a gingerbread house with the kids, bake cookies, go ice skating, watch your favorite holiday movies to get you all in the mood.

MAIL FARAWAY GIFTS

Have gifts for out-of-town family wrapped, boxed and shipped by Dec. 10. Phew!

MAIL YOUR CARDS

Spend a couple of evenings (while watching a holiday movie) stuffing your holiday cards into the envelopes and addressing them. Get them out by Dec. 15.

PLAN MENUS

If family is coming to town (check dietary restrictions so you can be prepared), you’ll want to have an appetizer each night that they are with you, preferably at about 5 p.m. so you can have dinner about 6 p.m. For every night that family is in town, plan a dinner or make a reservation two weeks in advance. Of course, keep meals simple during the week, and focus on your Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas morning brunch and Christmas dinner menus.

• ORDER SPECIAL FOOD ITEMS

If ordering a ham or turkey or special bakery items, be sure to do that by Dec. 15.

WRAP NIGHTLY

As the month of December goes by everything starts to take on a blur. Don’t wait to attack those stacked-up boxes of online gifts. Open them and wrap several each night, remembering to tag them!

• CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST

Some people like to blare the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah on Christmas morning, others prefer Ella Fitzgerald, Country or pop music. In any event, be ready with your preferred playlist.

AUSTLEN BABY CO.

The Entourage 2.0 Stroller austlen.com

Single: $949

With Second Seat: $1,099.99

Sit & Stand Bundle: $1,199.99

The stroller you purchase for your growing family matters. There are a lot of double —or tandem — strollers out there, so why this one? Because it’s a single and then a double but also a sit ‘n stand and a cargo carrier. The single stroller holds up to a 50-lb. child. With the double, the second seat holds up to 40 lbs. This workhorse of a stroller also carries up to 65 lbs. of cargo in the lower basket and up to 35 lbs. in the market tote. No, it’s not a lightweight rig, so it may not be the right one for one child. But if you’re expecting another and want to make frequent strolls around your ‘hood and keep it in your garage or schlepp it across soccer fields piled high with gear, you’ll be hardpressed to find another that can match the need. It can easily be made bigger when you need it and is compatible with all major car seat brands.

Men and boys suffer depression and anxiety quietly and in less obvious ways: withdrawal, isolation, outbursts, destructive behaviors, and anxiety.

Boys age 10-18 are working out their identity as men. Many struggle because home and school environments don’t support the freedom to explore healthy masculinity

Men struggle to feel worthy and adequate as men, husbands, fathers, and workers.

Society offers unhealthy exaggerations of what healthy masculinity looks like.

— A MOM REPORTER OUTING —

All Aboard "The Wheels on the Bus!"

Bring your junior bus drivers to Nashville Children's Theatre!

How do you turn a simple, classic children’s song into an hour-long engaging theatre experience for the kiddos?

I was skeptical that they could do it (or that my nearly 4-year-old child would actually be entertained throughout), but we both ended up having a blast. The interactive and immersive play is designed for children ages 0 - 5. I think it’s best suited for preschool ages, but there were babies and older kids in attendance that seemed to enjoy it, too. I wouldn’t hesitate to bring a sibling if they are slightly out of the suggested age range.

"AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE FROM START TO FINISH"

If you haven’t been to NCT yet, it’s more than just arriving and sitting through a performance, It’s an interactive experience from start to finish. Upon arrival, they have fun activity stations for the kids set up in the lobby, so plan to arrive early to take advantage of those. For this particular play, they had coloring sheets for the kids to color their own traffic light or bus, an area to play with blocks, toys and more.

The play began with the actors “Bert and Betty the Bus Drivers” coming into the lobby and teaching the kids or “trainees” a hand motion to signal they were ready. This was used throughout the performance. The actors then led us down a corridor to a small, intimate theater with chairs and benches set up for the audience. It’s open seating and there are no bad seats. Many of the kids chose to sit on the floor up front so they could be close to the action. Each child was then given a bag filled with some interactive props that are used throughout the play. The actors are very engaging with the children. They stopped to say hello to each child and to make sure all felt included and a part of the journey along the bus route with Bert.

Each stop brought a new song, character and activity for the kids to join in on — like helping to replace the spark plug, helping get the sputtering bus started again, finding a lost dog and washing the bus that got dirty along the route. Each stop also brought a new dilemma to solve and between stops, not surprisingly, we sang “The Wheels on the Bus.” Kids are encouraged to sing and dance along. After the performance, we were invited to take photos on stage, so you can wait until it ends to get the cute Instagramworthy pics of your kids on set at the bus station. Overall, it was a fun activity that my daughter enjoyed. Though it was not our first visit to NCT, it would be a great introduction to theatre for any child. They have free, easy parking in a lot out front with plenty of availability. Snacks and drinks are sold in the lobby.

The play runs through December 1, so grab your tickets before the run is over at Nashvillechildrenstheatre.org.
