DAYBYDAY Love Means Never Having to Say You’re Sorry ... Not.

y daughter and I recently stayed up late to watch that classic, marvelous tear-jerker, Love Story. In the film, lovers Jenny (Ali MacGraw) and Oliver (Ryan O’Neal) have their first big fight, and Jenny flees. Oliver runs after her, only she’s nowhere to be found. He cases Cambridge, Massachusetts, all afternoon long until evening falls. Hopeless, he returns home and there she is, a pathetic sight, chilled and teary, sitting on the steps of the house. “I forgot my key,” she says. Oliver tries to apologize and Jenny says, “Don’t — love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Oliver breathes, out of breath, and just stares at her. And the audience does, too. Because you have to think about that. And with Valentine’s Day here — love all around — it’s good to take a look at love; what love is and what love is not. “Love is never having to say you’re sorry,” is a bunch of hooey. Unless people have perfect love (and we cannot because humans are hopelessly flawed), we are going to have to apologize. Your 10-year-old loves his little brother, but hauls off and slugs him and he doesn’t have to apologize? You bet he does. Of course, in an ideal world, we would love unconditionally, but we all know we’re not in an ideal world. Love is complicated, love DOES have conditions. Love is what we feel for our families and friends, but we can also feel appalled, disappointed, rejected, confused, irate, betrayed, ambivalent, used. Maybe it’s better to look at what love is NOT. Love is not sneaky or cruel, violent or careless, crass or uncaring. Love, my mother told me, was all I would need in raising my children. Love, she said, would guide me. Listen to your heart; listen to what your heart tells you. And what’s “your heart”? It’s that small, determined inner voice, that internal director connected to what’s good, right and true. Listen for it. The “love means never having to say you’re sorry” idea that you can marvel at? If you actually achieve perfect love (which you cannot), no, you won’t have to say you’re sorry because you will not have hurt anyone. To me, the only time to apologize is when you’ve hurt someone. And you DO need to say it so healing can begin. I hope you are growing your parenting heart. I hope it’s filled with massive amounts of love. I know it is — because you are sharing your life with children.

ast summer, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued guidelines and concerns about ingesting certain chemicals into our bodies. It’s nothing new, but are you making changes? The chemical culprits include nitrates and nitrites (used as preservatives mainly for meats); phthalates (used to make plastic packaging); and bisphenols (used in plastics and the lining of metal cans for food products). In spite of a growing number of scientific studies warning against their use, the FDA still lists these chemicals as “generally safe.” What’s true, the AAP says (representing 67,000 pediatricians in the U.S.), is these chemicals may interfere with your child’s natural hormones in ways that impact his long-term growth and development. Babies and children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of chemicals in food partly because they eat more food per pound of body weight than adults. Yet everywhere you go, you can see adults

handing children prepackaged portions of snacks whether it’s at home, day care, school or sports practice — that packaging may contain perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFCs), another harmful agent. Children’s metabolic systems and organ systems are still developing and maturing, so hormone disruptions caused by the ingesting of too many chemicals can potentially cause lasting changes. The chemicals described in the pediatrics report have been shown to interfere with normal hormone function “by mimicking or blocking the actions of hormones that are responsible for brain development, development of the sex organs and normal metabolic functions.”

GOOD NEWS

It’s time to be smart. There are simple steps you can take to safeguard your family from harmful chemicals. The AAP urges households to limit the use of plastic food containers (never place in dishwasher or microwave; heating stimulates harmful chemicals) and aim to serve children more whole fruits and vegetables and less processed food. While the AAP has called for more rigorous testing and regulation of thousands of chemicals used as food additives or indirectly added to foods when they are used in manufacturing, at home you

can take matters into your own hands. Monitor kids who may be heating something up without awareness. Check your dishwasher for plastics before starting the cycle. Wash all whole foods before cooking or preparing, and be aware of what your kids are eating. No matter what, you now are more aware of harmful chemicals.

HOW TO AVOID INGESTING CHEMICALS • Prioritize the eating of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables whenever possible. • Avoid processed meats. • Avoid microwaving food and beverages in plastic containers. This includes infant formula and pumped breast milk. • Don’t put plastic food containers in the dishwasher. • Use alternatives to plastic like glass or stainless steel whenever possible. • Check the recycling code on the bottom of products and avoid plastics with recycling codes 3, 6 and 7, which may contain phthalates, styrene and bisphenols. • Always wash hands before handling food and drinks. • Wash all fruits and vegetables that are not peeled. BABY TO BIG-KID BED 5 TIPS TO HELP MAKE THE TRANSITION SMOOTHER

The signs are clear — it’s time for the toddler-bed transition — but doing it right may take some trial and error. Take it from a triplet mom. BY SARAH LYONS

he moment I’ve been dreading for months has arrived. I can no longer contain my triplet 2-year-olds in their cribs. Two-thirds of them are climbing out and destroying the room. The one child who cannot climb out has declared her crib as party central. The two monkeys go straight into her crib after they have destroyed the room with such fun activities as opening the shades, emptying drawers and dumping diapers. I find them like this on a daily basis, screaming and cheering as they bounce up and down in one crib together. This is how I knew I could no longer wait to make the transition to toddler beds. Here are some transition tips to help you from a now happy triplet mom.

1. WAIT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE

If your child is climbing out of his crib and wandering the room, it is time to switch to a big-kid bed. Climbing in and out of his crib puts him at high risk of falling and getting hurt. However, if he’s content in his crib and has made no attempt to escape, don’t rush to make the switch. My oldest son slept in his crib without trying to climb out until almost 3 years old. Eventually, he became too tall for a crib and he had an easy transition to a twin bed.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME

Many parents will transition their babies to a twin or toddler bed because they need the

crib for a soon-to-be arriving younger sibling. If possible, try to make the transition to a big-kid bed when there are few other transitions going on in your child’s life. Starting a new school, potty training, moving or the arrival of a new sibling can all be reasons to delay the switch. If you do have a new baby arriving and need the crib, consider starting shortly after you find out you’re pregnant, using a bassinet for Baby for a few months or purchasing a second crib.

3. MAKE IT HIS OWN

If you decide it’s the right time to make the switch, get your child excited about his new bed. Purchase new bedding and pillows to make his new space more welcoming and exciting. Consider updating his room with new big-kid decor or buying playful pillowcases with his favorite cartoon characters on them.

4. CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Whether your child was climbing out of bed before the switch or not, he will have more freedom in his bedroom than he had in the past, and it’s important to make sure he’s safe during rest times. Secure dressers and bookshelves because little ones will try to climb them. Bolt dressers, changing tables or any other furniture to the wall to make the safest environment possible. Put away breakable items, cover outlets, eliminate shade pull cords and clear the

room of any hazards. If your child can open the bedroom door, consider installing a door knob safety cover so he can’t wander the house freely if he wakes up earlier than you.

5. BE CONSISTENT

Transitions can be difficult for little ones, but they are easier when you’re consistent. Most parents worry that once their child does transition to a big-kid bed, he will stop sleeping well. For the best results, put your child to bed when he’s tired and ready to rest. If you followed a daily routine before laying him down in his crib, continue it. If not, try starting a daily routine that looks something like this: • Bath time • Put on pajamas • Read a book • Brush teeth • Visit the restroom • Have some snuggle time • Drink of water • Bed time When your child knows what to expect, he will know that it’s not playtime and it’s time to rest. Transitioning from a crib to a big-kid bed is a big deal! It’s exciting, fun and sometimes challenging. Help your child with this milestone by being supportive and giving positive reinforcement. Praise and reward him for making it through each night, for taking a nap and for following rules. Before too long, the crib will be a thing of the past. Train Kids to Be Independent You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to NOT teach your children how to do things for themselves, but you DO need to leave them alone for learning sometimes.

s a mom of kids ranging from 2 - 12, I realize how quickly time flies. I love watching my kids grow, trying new things and discovering their passions. It can be hard to let them struggle through â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or even

fail at â&#x20AC;&#x201D; experiences outside of their comfort zones. However, those experiences develop confidence and independence which is valuable in life at all ages. I want to raise self-sufficient adults, and that means I need to start training them now. Here are some ideas to help kids naturally develop the independence needed to be confident and responsible adults. (please turn the page)

Train Your Kids to Be Independent THE PRESCHOOL YEARS — CREATE A HELPER —

Toddlers and preschoolers love to follow parents around the house, so why not have them help with the chores? They can help put clothes in the dryer, match socks, sweep the floor or assist in any other task. They may not be able to do chores independently or have household responsibilities yet, but taking the extra time to show them now lays the groundwork for the future.

— GIVE OPPORTUNITIES —

During the preschool years, kids typically show an interest in trying self-care tasks themselves. It may be easier (and faster) to tie your child’s shoes, zip up his coat, make his lunch and buckle his seatbelt, but allowing him to try these things on his own helps him become more independent. Consider starting the preparation for your day 15 minutes earlier to allow time for him to help. If frustration arises, remain calm and pause. Instead of just completing the task for him, take time to teach him how to do it again so he won’t get discouraged.

— PROBLEM SOLVE —

Problem-solving skills begin to develop at a young age. Toddlers and preschoolers will often get frustrated when things don’t go their way — which may result in a temper tantrum. While this is age appropriate, help your child develop problem-solving skills by calmly suggesting solutions to what is upsetting him. Have him come up with ideas to solve the problem and when possible help him work through it on his own.

Give your child choices whenever possible to help him develop independence and to give him a sense of control.

THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEARS — CREATE A HELPER —

For elementary age kids, advance what was done in the preschool years. I will assign my children a chore like washing windows, vacuuming or putting away dishes. Since they have helped me with these tasks for years, they no longer need my assistance. If they’re reluctant to do chores, I make a list of things that need to be done and have them choose a few things they would like to do. When they’re done they will have free time for electronics, outside play or something they have been looking forward to. Chores teach kids to be independent and responsible.

— GIVE OPPORTUNITIES —

Give your child more opportunities to be independent as he matures. This may look different depending on your particular child, but some ideas may be ordering and paying for his food at a restaurant, riding his bike home from school, packing his own lunch or trying a new extracurricular activity. Each opportunity — even a challenging one — helps him become self-sufficient and develop more independence.

— PROBLEM SOLVE —

Elementary school kids will begin to face bigger problems that may include challenging friendships, struggles with schoolwork or even bullying. Foster good communication with your child and help him come up with solutions he’s comfortable with. Cheer him on when he’s able to work through obstacles.

BONUS TIP

Do your best not to criticize your child’s efforts but instead praise him for trying to do his best.

THE TEENAGE YEARS — CREATE A HELPER —

’Tweens and teens should be given even more household responsibilities as they are nearing adulthood. Take note of what skills it takes to run a household and begin to teach them these tasks. Cooking, yard work, babysitting, laundry, car care and even a part-time job fall into this category. The more responsibilities your child is comfortable with while in your home will make the transition to living on his own smoother.

— GIVE OPPORTUNITIES —

There’s a fine line between giving your child independence and keeping him safe in the teen years. As he starts to drive, spends more time with friends and works outside the home, you have less control over his choices. Continue working on open communication and trust with him so that as he ventures into the world, you both feel comfortable with the change.

— PROBLEM SOLVE —

One of the hardest thing a kid has to experience is the consequences for making a poor choice. Your first reaction may be to step in and “save” your child, but, in the long run, this does not teach him anything. For example, if he left his homework at home he will not receive credit for the work. The easy thing to do would be to run the assignment to the school, but chances are he will forget again and most likely, on a larger assignment. He’s old enough to manage responsibilities and he must also learn these lessons. Sit down with your child and help him come up with solutions to problems and encourage him to do this without you.

BONUS TIP

Set specific household rules so your child can be independent but not beyond your comfort zone as a parent.

Bye, bye helicopter parent! Hello to kids learning character, responsibility and a prolonged sense of independence — all without you.

BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES rom whitewater rafting to performing arts and cooking, today’s sleep-away camps appeal to a wide range of kid interests while still providing the long-term benefits summer camp is known for. In addition to acquiring new skills, kids learn how to collaborate and live in a community at camp, gaining self-confidence and independence through problem-solving and teamwork. “All those things are life skills and life assets that every parent wants for their child,” says Jill Tipograph, a camp consultant and self-published author of Your Everything Summer Guide & Planner (2010). According to the American Camp Association (ACA; acacamps.org), 75 percent of camp directors report adding new activities and programs to accommodate trends in popular culture. The top three activities camps are integrating into their programming include performing arts, experience adventures and most recently, culinary. “Culinary is the hottest and newest in terms of camps investing in building kitchens and bringing in specialists to teach the kids,” Tipograph says. “The other part that goes along with culinary is the whole, farmed table — taking things from the gardens and cooking them,” Tipograph adds.

TRADITIONAL OR SPECIALTY?

Specialty camps are designed for kids interested in pursuing a specific interest. Traditional camps, on the other hand, offer a combination of programming. Children can try different activi-

ties, including those they may not have tried otherwise, whether stained glass design, rock climbing or singing in a recording studio. “I feel that if children start their camping career on a purely specialty track, parents can miss out on what camp can do for their child,” Tipograph says. CONSIDERATIONS

The biggest consideration you have when deciding about a residential camp for your child is — your child. How mature is he? Most kids are “ready” to be away from parents by ages 9 or 10, but consider your child’s physical and emotional aptitude first. Has he spent time away from home before? Is he longing for more experiences and indicating that to you? Next, make a plan. Start researching camps a year ahead of time. You can begin with the ACA website, but it’s even better to start asking around. Talk to friends and family, check out websites and think about visiting prospective camps. BY JANEEN LEWIS sk anyone who has ever been to overnight camp about his experience, and you will hear endless tales of camaraderie, cabin mates and campfires. Many times campers will say overnight camp was the first time they rode a horse or shot a bow and arrow or flew down a zip line. It’s where they learned to make their beds and keep their belongings together in cramped quarters. With the perfect blend of adventure and responsibility, camp life teaches kids valuable lessons they can use for the rest of their lives. If you send your child to overnight camp, here are some life lessons he’s likely to learn. FACE-TO-FACE COMMUNICATION Tom Rosenberg, president and CEO of the American Camp Association (ACA), says today’s kids spend so much time on technology that learning to communicate face-to-face with peers is imperiled. He quotes a 2015 Pew Research Center study that says, “Just 25 percent of teens spend time with friends in person outside of the school day on a regular basis.”

In light of that statistic, overnight camp is a good place to get kids to socialize without technology. “About 90 percent of camps don’t allow kids to have computers or cell phones,” says Rosenberg. “In general, camps are an oasis for human-powered socialization.” INDEPENDENCE For many kids, camp is the first time they are away from parents and the familiarity of home. While this may cause some homesickness, it also gives children an opportunity to overcome being homesick. And without parents there, children learn to pick up after themselves and keep up with their things. Overnight camp can also prepare students for independence in their next steps in life, like trips abroad and college.

COMMUNITY Sometimes it’s hard to live with other people, especially if other people drape their clothes all over your bed or hog the shower. And it’s not like kids can escape to their own room when they’re at summer camp because everyone bunks together in one cabin. But kids learn to work out differences about how they share their living spaces, and it’s more fun for campers to do the cabin chores together than alone. Once the “working out” of bunks is complete, everybody learns to live as a group. As kids grow up, this group experience pays huge dividends as they transition into adulthood in a community. “That cabin group has community building at its core,” says Rosenberg. “The Blob” — an age-old tradition — at Riverview Camp for Girls.

RESILIENCY Camp life doesn’t always go as planned, and kids learn to adapt and move with what’s happening around them. Campers grow more resilient from trying again after they fail, according to Rosenberg. “Part of growing up is learning that you are not always going to be successful. Sometimes campers fail and counselors help them try again,” says Rosenberg. “Camp is a safe place to make mistakes.” Going to overnight camp benefits kids in many other ways untold. It provides a place where kids can get out of their daily setting and have new adventures, meet new people and learn new skills. And while they are doing all of those things, they will probably learn a few life lessons that will stay with them forever. Janeen Lewis is a freelance journalist and mom to Andrew and Gracie. Hill plays both Glinda and Aunt Em in the stage musical at TPAC this month. This stage adaptation is based on the beloved 1939 movie starring Judy Garland. “If you love technical theater, this is the show to see,” says Hill. From the infamous twister and lots of flying to
