My Dream Home Beneath the Trees

Rocks, onion grass, sticks, bird nests, worms, pine cones, dirt, clumps, dandelions. The building materials for my mansion. Talk about playing house! I was a pro. Once I graduated past the expansive Barbie mansions I built in my bedroom in the winter, I moved outside in the spring amid the sweet smell of grass. I couldn’t wait to go outside when I was a kid and I loved being by myself, or I’d have my little sister with me. We were great play pals, even if I was the bossy one. I had a huge imagination, I couldn’t help it!

“This will be the kitchen,” I’d command, using a stick to draw the room borders out in the dirt. “We’ll need a stove, tables and chairs and a refrigerator.” And I’d see little Wendy dragging some beaten up something or other out of the garage, heading my way. Mom never stopped us. Unless it was time to eat. But even then, she’d let us take our sandwiches outside so we could eat in our house. I’m not kidding when I tell you we did this for hours. And we really saw the house. Wendy and I shared a bedroom on the third floor of our very old real home complete with crickety stairs and floors. So it was a luxury for us to map out our own bedrooms (with the stick, defining the spaces with rocks). It made her mad that I’d get flowers and put them in a jar in my room, so then she’d do the same. And we’d lie on our backs in our separate bedrooms and talk.

Well, you’ve gotta have a tree. And some dirt. And you’ve gotta be good at foraging around for stuff. An empty chicken coop on the edge of our property was a marvel for dusty discarded things and the mysterious left-over hint of what may have been back in its heyday. A hen house. Eggs!

Our house under the tree was beautiful. We’d bring in lemonade, popsicles, books and small stuff that Mom said we could use. The pond wasn’t far way. We’d run there, get all muddy slipping along the trail then run back to our house and collapse in our rooms.

I may have felt a tinge of deprivation when summer ended and I heard about my friend Colleen’s adventures at a summer camp in another state. That sounded exotic, grown up and ... strange. I looked at her differently because she went to camp and she seemed to be so worldly and confident ... or was that just her? I think it was just her. But I was one of five kids and while we weren’t poor, we weren’t doing any camps beside vacation Bible. So mostly we had each other to play with and we did. I liked my brothers and sisters a lot, so I didn’t mind so much. Besides, I liked being at home because my Mom was nice and she laughed a lot and didn’t get mad at us too much. Messy childhood. What would this have looked like for me if we were all constantly on our cell phones? I could hog the house land line for hours, but that never made me feel self-conscious like social media can.

I think the point is that it’s a good time — with spring here this month — to take stock of your child’s childhood. And to see if there’s a “nature deficit” as they’ve coined it. And to do something about that if you can. I benefited from a world of nature on warm spring days. And I’m so grateful for all of those hours outside and all of my many dirt mansions!

13th Annual Special Kids Race

Come out on Saturday, March 9 to help raise funds for SPECIAL KIDS, the special needs therapy and nursing center in Murfreesboro

Runners and walkers of all abilities get ready: The 13th Annual Special Kids race takes place on Saturday, March 9 to help raise funds for Special Kids Therapy and Nursing Center located in Murfreesboro.

Special Kids provides the much-needed therapies that local children with special needs need. The race includes options: a one-mile family fun run ($30); a 5K ($50); a 10K ($55) or a 15K ($60).  The event encourages everyone to get involved. Presented by founding sponsor Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & Surgicenter, a

bevy of additional sponsors are attached to help make the event a success.

Special Kids, a Christian therapy and nursing center, started with one child in 1998 and has grown to serve more than 4,500 children from 19 counties in Middle Tennessee. Special Kids is located at 2132 E. Main Street in Murfreesboro.

NCT’s Snuggery Presents a Show Just Right for Little Ones

“The Flopsy Bunnies” runs March 9 – June 30 on Saturdays & Sundays

Nashville Children’s Theatre (NCT) proudly presents the world premiere of The Flopsy Bunnies: A Peter Rabbit Adventure, playing March 9 through June 30. The show is part of NCT’s Snuggery program, which offers immersive and interactive programming for young children from birth to age 5.

Based on the Beatrix Potter story, the show joins Mama Bunny on a quest to find her missing flopsy bunnies. Follow her through Mr. MacGregor’s garden, tracing a trail of lettuce leaves in a play tailored for the very young.

The play showcases actors Jennifer Whitcomb (Mama Flopsy) and Victoria Griffin (Thomasina Tittlemouse). Written and directed by Ernie Nolan, NCT’s executive artistic director, Nolan says the play includes gentle lessons for kids.

“The Flopsy Bunnies combines curious whimsy with clever problem-

solving . It has a playful storyline that encourages sharing, which is an important lesson for kids,” Nolan says. “We are excited to present another world premiere production to young audiences and to bring joy to the community through a story that highlights the remarkable talents and expertise of our actors and production staff,” he adds.

In preparation for the show, NCT has a guide of at-home activities to build anticipation for the performance. Sing and dance to “Little Rabbit Fingerplay,” play bunny-inspired games, grow a garden, create artwork, enjoy yummy bunny snacks and more.

All productions take place on NCT’s Snuggery stage, a cozy space built for a creative, immersive experience. Booster seats are available.   Tickets are $15 for a famly four-pack and are available for purchase now at NashvilleChildrensTheatre.org.

GREEN TIME for the KIDS

Help your kids to connect with nature ... even one little bug at a time. Research shows that nature is the mental-health antidote to our kids’ (and our) excessive screen time.

As chilly weather gives way to the warmth of springtime, we’re all drawn to the sunshine outdoors. And that’s a good thing. Loads of current research shows the benefits of spending time in nature, especially in light of how much time we spend on screens. But adults have already grown up. The main premise of nature deficit disorder — as coined by scholars — is that too much screentime for kids can take away from the mental health benefits found in the outdoors. Screens often keep kids indoors regardless of the weather.

Tearing kids away from their screens and into the outdoors is not going to be easy. But here’s ammo to help you start the e ort:

BETTER HEALTH. Inactivity increases your risk for physical disability and disease, yet 28% of American adults and 19% of kids age 6 to 17 are inactive today. People who spend more time outdoors are more active on average than people who spend less time outside. Encourage your kids to ride bikes or start jogging to jumpstart an outdoor routine. Get accustomed to outings to parks and nature centers for plenty of outdoor time.

MOOD. Research consistently shows outdoor exposure improves mood and protects against depression. An analysis of 30 studies done in the last 26 years found you don’t have to break a sweat to get benefits from being outside. Even

low-intensity outdoor activities, such as walking or gardening for 20 minutes, can be beneficial. In fact, the biggest increase in mood and selfesteem occurs in the first five minutes. So what are you waiting for? Putter around in the yard with the kids to feel instantly happier.

SUNSHINE. Ultraviolet rays from the sun cause the body to produce Vitamin D, a substance that is hard to get from food sources alone. This important nutrient is crucial for calcium absorption in the body, and low levels increase your risk of fracture and osteoporosis. Studies also link Vitamin D deficiency to asthma, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Soak up some rays to make more Vitamin D. Experts say five to 30 minutes of sunshine two to three times a week should be enough. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

RENEWED FOCUS. Research conducted by the National Wildlife Federation shows the relaxed quiet of outdoor environments allows our brains to recharge. In nature — where we aren’t bombarded by text messages and to-do lists — we’re able to tune in to subtle details like budding leaves and animal paw prints.

FEWER SYMPTOMS OF ADHD. A national survey of more than 400 parents of children with ADHD found those who regularly played outdoors in unstructured green spaces like parks and woodlands had less severe symptoms than kids who played indoors or on outdoor playgrounds with man-made structures. A nature walk or trip to the beach may be just what the doctor ordered.

ENHANCED CREATIVITY. Researchers from the University of Kansas found backpackers who spent four days in nature — unplugged from electronics — scored a full 50 percent better on a creative problem-solving test. It’s not clear whether time in nature or time out from technology — or a combination of both — was responsible for this impressive result.

LESS STRESS. Outdoor environments aren’t created equal. Studies show a 50-minute walk in the park is more restorative than walking the same distance and duration on city streets.

Learn wise techniques for handling the trials and tribulations young children throw your way.

It’s one thing if your toddler has a kicking, screaming tantrum in the middle of Walmart — which is actually on target developmentally, as embarrassing as it can be for you. But what if they’re still at it when they’re 3, 4 or even 5? As kids get older, we expect more from them, and rightly so. But it can be tough to know what’s OK because it’s “just a stage” and what’s no longer age-appropriate. That’s because kids don’t necessarily develop on a strict timetable.

“Age gives you a general idea of when you can expect normal developmental milestones like being able to use your words instead of having a tantrum,” says Marcy Guddemi, Ph.D., a child advocate. “But the timing can also depend on your child’s temperament, how much practice they’ve had with the skill you’d like them to have

and how you handle daily opportunities to develop it,” she adds. With a little insight and encouragement, you can help your child move to the next level. Use our guide to decipher when certain “bad” behavior is on track, when to expect your child to age out of it and even how to speed up the process a bit.

Biting!

BABIES It’s very common for teething infants to nip. In fact, they’re prone to bite everything, which can provide information about the world like, “If I bite Mommy, she screams.” Still, start training your baby now not to bite you or anyone else. If they chomp down when you’re breastfeeding, remove them from your breast and say: “No biting,” and turn away from them. Withdrawing

your attention (and your boob) plus the tone of your voice sends a clear message that biting isn’t OK.

TODDLERS Even if you taught your baby not to bite, they still might do it.

“Toddlers sometimes bite to communicate their frustration,” says Peter L. Stavinoha, Ph.D., coauthor of Stress-Free Discipline: Simple Strategies for Handling Common Behavior Problems

That’s because they don’t have the complex language skills yet to ask for what they want, such as the Legos a friend is playing with.

If your toddler bites, state firmly: “No biting. Biting hurts,” then take the toy away or whatever they snatched.

“Comfort the bitten child and say things you want your child to hear, such as: ‘You don’t like being bitten because biting hurts and

we don’t bite our friends,’” says Guddemi.

Toddlers are too young to understand the pain somebody else feels, but focusing on the bitten child and your tone of voice will help them learn that biting doesn’t work.

PRESCHOOLERS By now, biting shouldn’t be an issue because preschoolers can ask for what they want. But they still might bite on impulse as a fast way to get something, like a turn on the swing. If you’ve got a biter, remind them before play dates and preschool that even if they get mad, biting isn’t allowed.

When things go well, be your child’s cheerleader: “That’s great you didn’t bite. I’m so proud of you. Keep up the good work!”

instead of biting and give them a time-out (for double their age in minutes) and comfort the bitten child. Stay calm, state the rules and deliver a consequence to help put a stop to it.

Tantrums!

TODDLERS Meltdowns are inevitable for kids ages 1 to 2 because they can’t yet say, for example, “I’m frustrated because you won’t buy me fruit roll-ups,” so they make their point by throwing a fit.

ly if you’ve given in to tantrums before. To work tantrums out of the repertoire, be clear about your expectations before going out: “We’re going to buy eggs and milk today, not cookies.”

In the store, recognize it when they’re behaving well: “I love the way you’re helping me put things in the cart. You’re doing such a great job.” Then reward it: “Since you were such a good helper in the store, we’re going to play “ Candy Land when we get home.”

SCHOOL-AGE KIDS Tantrums

are rare by now, so if your child has one, they may be having a tough time expressing complex feelings like jealousy or feeling left out.

“You should also ask yourself whether you’ve babied this child more than the others or been inconsistent with your expectations,” says Spinks-Franklin.

If you’re still baffled about why a tantrum broke out, ask your child to explain it after things calm down. If they don’t know, dig deeper. It could be a sign they need more hugs or one-on-one time with you, for example.

“All behavior is communication and the older kids get, the more complex the meaning of a tantrum can be,” Spinks-Franklin says.

However, they’re not too young to learn that tantrums won’t get them what they want.

Don’t reinforce them by giving in to your child’s demands just so they’ll stop. Instead, stand firm: “No, we’re not getting that today,” and turn away. Do whatever you can to send the message that you’re not going to engage.

“If your child doesn’t get your attention, his tantrum will stop, but you have to have more endurance then he does,” says Adiaha Spinks-Franklin, M.D., a developmental-behavioral pediatrician.

If your child doesn’t get over it, leave the store or wherever you are and remind them: “Tell Mommy what you want. Don’t kick and scream.” They may not be able to do that yet, but they’ll get the concept. Fatigue and hunger trigger meltdowns, so try not to shop with your toddler around nap or meal time.

PRESCHOOLERS While

your child is developmentally capable of telling you how they’re feeling, they may still pitch a fit, especial-

Whining!

TODDLERS Toddlers whine because they want attention and they’ve learned that using an annoying voice will get it. Don’t give in. Show them the difference between a whine and a normal tone. The next time they whine, say, “I don’t listen to that voice. Please ask me nicely.”

PRESCHOOLERS If your preschooler whines to get what she wants, you’ve probably been caving in a little too often. To reverse course, tell them you won’t listen to them unless they use a big-kid voice.

“The more kids whine, the less you should engage with them,” says David J. Schonfeld, M.D., a developmental-behavioral pediatrician.

If the whining continues, make eye contact and warn them that you’ll need to leave the store (or wherever you are) if they keep it up, then leave if you have to.

SCHOOL-AGE KIDS Not to

point fingers, but if your schoolage child is a whiner, you’re to blame. It’s time to be brutal: When the whining begins, flat out ignore it. Refuse to listen. Walk away. When they start to talk in a normal tone of voice, show them the attention they’re after with enthusiasm.

Not Sharing

TODDLERS Little kids are too egocentric to understand the give-and-take sharing involves. You can encourage your child to “take turns,” but don’t expect them to willingly give their toys to their siblings or other kids on play dates. In their mind sharing is: “I had a toy and it’s gone forever.”

At playdates, opt for activities that are easy to do together — dancing, coloring, building with blocks — to short-circuit any tussling.

PRESCHOOLERS Preschoolers are less self-centered than they were a year or two ago, but they’re still impulsive and from age 3 to 5, they still tend to be possessive with their favorite toys. You can help your child practice by showing them how to take turns with toys. That said, it’s fine to put away certain special things before friends come over. To encourage empathy, point out how nice it makes others — and even themselves — feel when they do share.

SCHOOL-AGE KIDS By kindergarten, kids can share well. If your child isn’t there yet, help them practice by inviting friends over who have mastered the art of sharing so they can learn from them. Continue to talk about why sharing is a good and kind thing to do. Still, don’t expect your child to have to share special toys, such as the one they just got for their birthday, even with siblings. It’s fine if some toys are private property.

Throwing Food

BABIES Throwing food helps your baby learn cause and effect — if they throw food from their high chair, it falls down and you’ll pick it up. Instead of getting exasperated, play along for another round or two. When you’ve had enough, say something like: “That was fun, but Mommy isn’t

going to play anymore,” then stop gathering up tossed Cheerios in front of them.

TODDLERS Your child is old enough to understand flinging food isn’t OK, but they may still do it when they’re bored or want attention. To end the antics, tell them, “Food is for eating and it belongs on your plate.” Stay calm.

“A huge reaction from you will only reinforce the bad behavior,” Guddemi says. If your toddler keeps it up, end the meal. She can finish eating later, once she has calmed down.

PRESCHOOLERS Thankfully, by the time your child is 3, they won’t be tossing food on the floor to get your attention or indicate their displeasure with what you’re serving. They’ll likely use their words to level any complaints about the meal.

Squirming

TODDLERS Unless something engages your child’s interest, expect them to be fidgety. Antsiness comes with the developmental territory. Try to work around it. For example, go to a kid-friendly restaurant early when it’s less busy (11:30 a.m. for lunch and 5 p.m. for dinner), and take along toys and crayons to keep your child engaged.

PRESCHOOLERS When kids reach 3 to 4, they should be able to sit contentedly for chunks of time, although how long depends on your child’s temperament. If you have a high-energy kid, that might be just 15 minutes. It’s still too soon to expect them to endure grown-up events like lengthy religious services or three-course restaurant dinners. Keep a stash of fun stuff on hand to keep them busy.

SCHOOL-AGE KIDS By now, children should be able to sit still for longer stretches at home and at school without needing constant attention. If your child can’t, consider that your cue to help them practice at home with activities such as crafts and games. If you’re concerned about your child’s restlessness, talk to your pediatrician.

THE BOY IN THE BOAT: Life Lessons Learned at Camp

Steering kids away from dependence on you and more upon themselves becomes a rite of passage every summer when kids go to camp.

As summer nears, parents are finalizing postschool plans for their children. Often, those schedules will include camp for a week, a month or more. Some kids will attend day programs, while others will enjoy overnight experiences. Their activities may be specialized or include a little bit of most anything. Regardless of the exact ingredients, these children will learn the true meaning of what summer camp is all about.

Among other things, camp provides kids with the opportunity to connect with nature, to participate in human- powered activities and to benefit from personal relationships. Many young people who attend camp experience an increase in self-esteem (independent research has found 92 percent of them say that the people at camp helped them feel good about themselves) and are able to establish a true sense of inde-

pendence. Kids also say that they’ve “developed lasting friendships,” “became a team player” or “learned how to care” because of camp.

One Boy’s Journey Through Camp

Ben was the boy in the boat (not to be confused with the boy in the above photo). A gregarious go-getter whose journey through camp was inextricably linked to sailboats on the water. The lessons he learned at camp originated from, or were reinforced by, the challenges he faced as a skipper, navigating the uncertain and constantly shifting conditions of wind, tide, crew and competition. Learning lessons about self-reliance, self-confidence, exploration and responsibility — all important metrics of a successful summer camp experience and harbingers of what follows.

SELF-RELIANCE

BS: When my parents’ SUV moved out of sight, I was, for the first time in my nine years of life, on my own. It didn’t hit me right away that the next morning my mom wouldn’t be there to wake me up, my dad to help me sail or even that I wouldn’t come home at the end of the day to find my bed nicely made. My camp counselors introduced me to something new: adults who would show me the way but not hold my hand the entire time. I did a lot of active learning. I would always try something the first time and if I couldn’t figure it out on my own, my counselors would be there for guidance.

SW: Development dictates young people eventually steer away from dependence on their parents and toward independence and selfreliance. In psychological terms, it’s called developing an “internal” as opposed to “external” focus of control — meaning that what formerly was other-directed (“Do this;” “Don’t do that”) is now self-directed (“I

should do this” and “I shouldn’t do that”). Short of long-established support systems, kids at camp must identify the resources that can help them meet personal and group goals, resolve conflicts and find success.

SELF-CONFIDENCE

BS: At my summer camp, awards were handed out at assemblies. Campers’ names were read aloud as they walked onstage to the sound of applause. In retrospect, I realize this simple act served a much greater purpose than just handing out certificates. Publicly recognizing a camper for accomplishments builds self-confidence.

SW: For campers, becoming self-reliant is predicated on having the self-confidence to succeed educationally and socially. In turn, selfconfidence is born of a positive sense of oneself: the experiences one has and how closely one’s achievements match one’s expectations. Campers gain self-confidence when they find meaningful, fulfilling educational and social experiences at camp, interpret those experiences correctly and have reasonable, achievable expectations for success.

EXPLORATION

BS: My counselors were always pushing me. Pushing me during unit games, pushing me in the cabin towards new activities, pushing me to be a better sailor and pushing me towards girls at dances. In their own ways they encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and take a risk. I developed a trust with them and, in turn, with the entire camp community. Whether I was on the water, on a field or in my cabin, I always knew that my counselors and the camp would “have my back.”

SW: Camp is about learning about oneself, learning about others and learning about new ways to approach the world. Self-confidence leads to learning through exploration of one’s interests, abilities and relationships. To maximize exploration, young people need to feel safe — free from fear of ridicule, sarcasm or insult. Creating a community of caring where young people feel comfortable moving beyond their “comfort zone” to the “challenge zone” promotes exploration.

RESPONSIBILITY

BS: I met some of the greatest people in the world at camp. In fact, I made such real friendships that the time I spent at camp each summer was enough to make me feel good the entire year. One of many lifelong things I learned at camp is a conscious responsibility to always be there for my friends and for others. Away from camp, I have volunteered as a peer leader, facilitating discussions about alcohol and drug use with middle and high school students and their parents, and I have joined fellow athletes in performing community service.

SW: Beyond the buddies, baseballs and bonfires lies the true value of the summer camp experience: a heightened sense of personal responsibility for the well-being of others. That “other orientation” manifests itself in many ways, including a strong sense of connectedness and a commitment to give of oneself. Research from SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) points out that young people who have attended summer camp are significantly more likely than those who have not to feel good about their relationships and to take positive risks, such as volunteering for community service.

The benefits to young people of a summer at camp have long been discussed. What are they? They are opportunities. Opportunities not exclusive to camps but rather concentrated at camp, where under the direction, supervision and influence of caring counselors, kids can learn to become more independent, more confident, more self-aware and more giving toward others. These are just some of the life lessons learned at camp.
