Do Your ‘Rest,’ Thomas!
T
alk about a fantastic investment! We were on vacation at El Caribe Resort in Orange Beach, Alabama when it happened. The kids were excited to go down the slides at the pool, so when we finally got there, off they hustled in that adorable walk-don’t-run way. They were 12, 10, 8 and 3. The youngest — Thomas — was with me, in the shallow end, where the chaise lounges were located. I dropped my bag and started slathering sunscreen on his little, wriggling body which grew more and more annoying for me. My husband was already crashed out on his stomach. Finally I let Thomas go, knowing he was heading to the slide, and figuring I would be there in just a second. Well, it was maybe 30 seconds. Unable to see my little guy, I threaded myself through chairs and tables toward the kids, seeing my older three, but not Thomas. My legs started moving faster. My girl sat at the top of the slide. I shouted, “Where’s Thomas?!” She laughed and shouted, “What?!” Now I darted around kids by the ladder; it had grown more crowded, and my eyes shot fiercely across the water. There he was. In the deep end, doing his “rest.” My brave boy had gone to the other slide at the other end of the deep water where there was a shorter line. He had promptly slid down without knowing how to swim. But he DID know how to “rest.” A “rest” is what Infant Swim Resources refers to as a “float.” Even in clothes, if a young child learns to “rest” he can keep himself afloat in the water by rolling on his back to “rest” for as long as possible — shout out if necessary, and stay there until help can come. Long enough for a panicked mom to find you. His little legs were starting to droop and the water was lapping at his chin. I dove in, clothes and all, and got to him just before he went under. All six of us spent the next hour sitting together, wrapped in towels. It was a close call, but it would become a famous family story. “Do your ‘rest,’ Thomas!” is something we can say and all of us will remember. Skip the floaties for your young child; they cannot keep him safe. Get your child swimming lessons; they are readily available for babies as young as 6 months old. Who knows? Maybe a “rest” will save YOUR child’s life.

Hear the First “Belle” of Broadway TPAC & Studio Tenn Present ‘Cabaret on Stage’ Series
B
roadway stars are coming back to the Music City stage — along with YOU! Tennessee Performing Arts Center and Studio Tenn Theatre Company are teaming up to feature some of Broadway’s biggest names with its Cabaret on Stage series,
kicking off with Susan Egan on May 15. Theater heads will know Egan for originiating the role of “Belle” in Broad-
way’s Beauty and the Beast (1994). However, ‘90s kids may know her better as the voice of “Meg” in the 1997 animated Disney film, Hercules. The cabaret series will feature other world-class performers — including Adam Pascal (Rent), Shoshana Bean (Hairspray) and Norm Lewis (Chicago Broadway revival) — with the audience seated and socially distanced on the stage alongside the performer. All performances are at TPAC’s Polk Theatre at 8 p.m. Dates are Susan Egan on May 15, Adam Pascal on June 12, Brandan & James on July 17, Shoshana Bean on Aug. 21 and Norm Lewis on Sep. 4. Susan Egan portrayed Belle in the original Broadway production of ‘Beauty and the Beast.’
Tickets for Cabaret on Stage are available at tpac.org.

Get the Kids SUN-READY They’ll be going to camps, swim outings and other fun outdoor activities. Keep the memories happy — and kids safe — by protecting from sunburn. 18 may 2021
nashvilleparent.com
A
re you in too much of a rush to put sunscreen on the kids? Don’t be. Make a mental note to always leave a little extra time in the mornings in order to get everyone protected before leaving for day camp or swimming fun. Young skin requires 30 minutes for the protective film that protects skin from harmful UV rays to develop. Think ‘sun readiness’ on top of sun safety here. But first things first: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes babies younger than 6 months old stay out of direct sunlight altogether. Instead, protect them with shade, use sun hats and protective clothing. The AAP does not recommended sunscreen for babies under 6 months old. After that, use sunscreen on all of your kids, no matter their skin pigmentation, and top hats on whoever will wear one and can manage to hold onto it! CHOOSING SUNSCREEN Last summer, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced new regulations affecting how sunscreens are marketed. Sunscreen labels are no longer allowed to feature the words “waterproof,” “sweatproof,” and “sunblock,” because no sunscreen is truly waterproof or sweatproof, and no lotion completely blocks the sun’s harmful rays. The ingredients once found in “blocks” — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — are now used in physical aka mineral sunscreens. These ingredients protect skin from the sun by acting as a physical block. These products are much pricier than chemical sunscreens — which also block rays — but are filled with, well, chemicals. To know if your sunscreen is chemical or not, read the ingredients. If zinc oxide and titanium dioxide aren’t there, you know it’s a chemical formula.
No matter your child’s skin type, it’s important to take daily precautions to protect it from the sun. “No matter the skin pigmentation, sun protection is vital,” said Sharon Albers, M.D. assistant professor of dermatology and director, pediatrics dermatology at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital to My Southern Health for Vanderbilt Health. Albers also suggests the following sun protection tips: • Use SPF products of at least 30 • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out • Reapply every two hours or after swimming Susan Day is editor of this publication and a mom of three adult children and one teenager.

Important to Know • Too much sun can lead to sunburn, skin damage, eye damage, skin cancer and a weakened immune system. • Simple sun safety precautions can minimize the risks of sun exposure. • Sun safety is about timing, shade, protective clothing and sunscreen. It takes diligence! • You can be a role model for sun safety. Source: skincancer.org

the importance of self expression Green hair? That’s nothing compared to a tongue piercing or a facial tattoo (parents everywhere say, “Thanks a lot, Post Malone!”); but seriously, be sure your values are clear when it comes to your kids’ decisions about their looks — and at a certain point, realize that it’s their life, afterall, not yours.
W
hen Jenny Berger was 12 years old she really, really wanted to dye her hair blue, green or even rainbow col-
ors if that was allowed. Her mom Kate wasn’t keen to the idea at all. “My first reaction was an instant, “Nope,” Kate says. “Although thinking back, I’m not sure why. I think I equated bright hair dye with piercings and tattoos and I just saw it all in my mind
and shook my head.” Kate’s own parents were very cautious with Kate and her siblings when it came to their physical self-expression. But Kate remembers wanting to get her ears pierced at age 13 and being told very firmly that would not happen until she was 16.
“That didn’t set well with me,” Kate admits. “I resented my mom for being so against something I wanted to do that I thought was cool and popular. I realized I didn’t want my own child to have to deal with that.” So, last summer (when the world was on stay-at--(please turn the page)

growing up -home orders) Kate helped Jenny color her hair with Kool-Aid. It took one packet, a bowl and spoon, conditioner, a paint brush, aluminum foil, a towel and about 30 minutes. Jenny was thrilled. The Kool-Aid color lasted about three weeks and during that time Jenny got the trend out of her system. While it’s important not to stifle your kid’s experimentation with different versions of self-expression, it still is shocking if they start listening to music you hate or wearing clothing in a questionable way. “My son started using scissors to cut off his pant legs and shirt sleeves and it just made my wife nuts,” says Jenson Holder, a Nashville dad of two. But as long as your kids aren’t hurting themselves or anyone around them, what’s
wrong with their actions? Self-expression helps preteens and teenagers on the road to self discovery figure out who they are becoming and also helps them form their adult personalities. Fortunately, there are several ways to enable kids to express themselves while also steering them in an alternate (read: acceptable to you) direction. In fact, if you handle each situation tactfully, you can help them discover themselves through appropriate self-expression that’s also OK with you.
Common Issues With Kids and Self-Expression 1) HAIR DYE – It is extremely common for kids, preteens and teens to dye their hair unusual colors today and to pick hairstyles that stick out such as a mullet or mohawk. Fortunately, hair will grow back, and it is
If your preteen or teen wants a nose ring, let her try a clip-on.
22 may 2021
Lots of girls wear cropped tops today, but plenty of parents have issues with preteen girls wearing them. If your preteen wants to wear one, but you don’t want her to, refrain from shouting, “No!” and instead, sit down and discuss when and wear it’s OK. For instance, you might consider letting her wear one around the house. Help her to formulate a healthy attitude around clothing — the teen years will bring even more challenges!
easy to change colors to more traditional hues. Your best bet is to let your kids get hair coloring out of their systems, says Betsy Brown Braun, author of You’re Not the Boss of Me (William Morrow; 2010). “I believe children should be able to own their own hair to an extent. I don’t think they should be able to dye it purple any more than I believe a 2-year-old should have an eyebrow piercing, but when we’re controlling about it, it’s not good,” she adds. “Besides, the best lessons that kids learn come by doing the wrong thing.” If you’re against your kid dying her hair, suggest a temporary hair dye instead, and if you offer to buy it for them, the odds are high that they will decide to use this approach. 2) IFFY WARDROBE CHOICES – If your kid has started dressing in a way that makes the word odd seem like an understatement, you’re not alone. However, attempting to change her wardrobe by giving her more conservative options or threatening to
nashvilleparent.com
ground her for her choices will not yield a positive outcome. Consider compromising, then take a look at current fashions together so you can talk about it. Phyllis Fagel, a counselor and author of the book Middle School Matters (DaCapo; 2019), says as kids get into the preteen years, they have a desire to not seem like a baby. As they transition into adolescence, they can become hostile toward negative adult assessments. Stepping out and making their own choices about what they wear helps them to feel like the expert in their own lives, Fagel says. And that’s the key. It’s best to refrain from judging your child’s clothing choices outloud, if possible, and to meet them in the middle. For example, allow them to dress how they want to when they are hanging out with their friends on weekends. In exchange, they will wear a more conventional outfit when you have family outings. Alternately, you can enable them to make their own wardrobe choices as long as they pay for their clothing, but also know that
if you are a particularly judgy parent, your child may leave the house in one outfit that you approve of only to change into the outfit they really want to wear that they’ve tucked into their backpack. 3) TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS – The lure of tattoos and unusual piercings can be very strong for teenagers, especially if they are going through a confusing time of change. Keep in mind that most kids will grow out of these stages, so it is a good idea to keep your feelings of dismay to yourself when your child tells you he wants a tattoo, Fagel says. A Pew Research Center study from 2017 showed that approximately 38 percent of people ages 18 to 29 have at least one tattoo. That number is only larger today with tattoos gone mainstream. But a 2018 U.S. nationally-representative poll on children’s health shows that most parents don’t want tattoos for their teens. Seventy-five percent of parents thought the earliest a kid should be allowed to have a tattoo is at age
18 or older. That doesn’t mean that parents polled were completely anti-tattoo. Nearly 63 percent agreed that getting a tattoo is a form of self-expression similar to hair dying and clothing choices. If your teenager is talking about getting a tattoo, be sure he watches plenty of episodes of “Tattoo Nightmares,” first, but also take a stand if you need too. Meanwhile, if your kid wants to get his nose pierced before you’re ready, it is very easy to use a clipon nose ring instead. As an added bonus, this might help them determine that they do not actually like the way they look. Ultimately, the best way to help your teenager navigate through their, well, trendier moments of selfexpression is to try and be accepting. Keep in mind that the shock factor is part of the fun of dressing oddly and getting a weird haircut. In other words, if you remain calm and offer reasonable alternatives, your kid will feel more comfortable about their choices and happier discussing them with you. Susan Day is editor of this publication and a mom of four.

“No! What Did You Do To Your Hair?!” — AVOID FREAKING OUT, IF POSSIBLE —
personal expression starts early!
E
leanor Lipton remembers when her pre-K daughter Sadie came inching around the house with her long curls cut off and bald spots showing. “She just had the most beautiful curls, but she got into playing beauty parlor with her little cousin,” Eleanor says. “I was heartbroken to see the mess that her hair had become and couldn’t stop myself from shouting, ‘What have you done?!’ Sadie was shocked at first and then started to cry because I had scared her.” Plenty of young kids can get scissor happy when they’re little and hair stylists have seen their share of kids in need of a hair savior. Little Sadie thought her mother would be happy, instead, Eleanor cried. “It was so unexpected, and I loved her hair before. We had not cut it since she was born so this really threw me,” she says. While you may lose it when you see your child’s hair destroyed, do your best to avoid shaming, says Gary Unruh, a child and family mental health counselor and author of Unleashing the Power of Parental Love (Lighthouse Productions; 2012). “When we frown and say, ‘Don’t ever do that again!,’ we’re telling the child, ‘The core parts of you are bad,’ even if we are only saying the behavior is bad,” Unruh says. Try hard not to freak out because the hair will grow out. Preschool kids are learning skills like cutting and this creative outlet is a normal part of development. Besides, if it is really, really terrible, head off to your hair stylist for repair — and be sure to tell your child (and her little cousin!) that only a real hairdresser or Mom or Dad is allowed to do the cutting.

Play Ball!
Free Vintage Baseball All Summer Long
Y
ou’ve seen baseball – but have you seen it played barehanded? If you and the little baserunners are looking for some unique and free entertainment this summer, The Tennessee Association of Vintage Baseball (or T.A.O.V.B.B.) play games in different locations in Middle Tennessee from May through September — with many games played at historical homes in the area. The league, founded in 2013, “promotes living history by bringing the 19th Century to life through America’s past time sport of base ball utilizing the rules, equipment (or lack thereof), attire and culture of the Civil War era,” according to their website. A large number of differences exist from the rules baseball is played under today to the rules of olden times. One detail you’ll find is immediately noticeable: no gloves allowed. The first officially confirmed use of a glove during a baseball game came in 1875, years after the era the league portrays.
nashvilleparent.com
Among the other differences between today’s and yesteryear’s game, a modern baseball has 108 stitches in a horseshoe pattern and weighs about five ounces. T.A.O.V.B.B. baseballs weigh almost an ounce more and its seams are stitched in a cross pattern. The season lasts five months, May through September. Summer Swim Lessons! Safety Experts Recommend Kids Start Splashing Around At 1 Year Old By Michael W. Aldrich
A
s we get closer to summer and warmer weather, more of us will be spending time with our kids in swimming pools or at the beach. Swim lessons and water readiness are critically important safety issues, not just in the summer, but all year round. Many parents don’t realize just how dangerous water can be for young kids. And honestly, their readiness for swim lessons is probably a lot earlier than most of us would ever expect. The American Academy of Pediatrics has released a new policy statement, updating their recommendations to prevent young children drowning. And that includes swim lessons for even the youngest toddlers. “Research has found that swim lessons are beneficial for children starting around age 1,
40 may 2021
and may lower drowning rates,” says Linda Quan, MD, FAAP, one of the co-authors of the policy statement. It may seem weird to have your one-year-old in swim lessons, but experts say it’s important for kids to feel comfortable in the water at a young age. While you may initially be hesitant, fearing that your little one is just too young, think about this. If you give your little one a supervised bath and they love splashing around, chances are, swim lessons will not be traumatizing. Sure, there’s always a chance of a potty accident or meltdown in the pool, but the swim instructors are ready for that. They’ve seen it all before. You can look at the swimming pool and swim lessons like a bigger version of the bathtub, but this time, you’re intentionally getting wet.
