DAY BY DAY By Susan Swindell Day

To Get a Hugger, Be a Hugger

I

t’s hitting me particularly hard because he’s my last one. If you’ve “read” me before, then you know I have four kids and can get kind of sappy about it. Why not? For the past many years, my kids have grown up in this space. I’ve told you everything, from diapers to Brio trains to preteen shenanigans and everything in between. Today, I want to tell you about a sort of loss I’m experiencing that just may cause you to hug your children more each day. Because they may not want to hug you one day. My youngest doesn’t want to hug anymore. Isn’t that sad? But wait. Yesterday he hugged me for the longest, hardest time with his head down, not wanting to let go. So I didn’t. I held on. Hold on as long as they’ll let you. Because of course, life goes on and kids get big. Kids — particularly boys — get to an age where they’re embarrassed to be seen as less than ... a man. They can go through a stage where they work really, really hard to NOT let water fall from their eyes. They stare, willing it away. They swallow large throat lumps, but they won’t let you see their eyes. You know emotion is in the air because when it is, a silence fills the room and everyone around knows. When boys are little, they will come to your arms for consolation. At some point when they are older they perceive needing comfort as weak and keep to themselves. But I’m a hugger. And when you’re a hugger in your family, you create huggers and everyone hugs. But this boy thing — this transition to man — it’s important to let them navigate the way they need to ... and to let them hug if they want to but not because they need to. So, yesterday when he was hugging me hard, it came after a revelation that I was disappointed by something he had done. He was sorry, and there we were hugging and making up. That’s what hugging is for, too. But on regular days, driving somewhere or going to the store with him, no way. No matter what, he will not behave in a hugging manner. It’s too much. Someone will see him and see that he loves his mom and it’s ... weak. That’s when you realize he has a whole lot to learn about love. Because love, when you come right down to it, is not weak at all. Love is about strength. And so is becoming a man. So, there’s a lot to learn. And I’ll just be hear with my arms open. Ready to hug as needed.

FEED BACK From Our Facebook Page

A MOM ASKS: “My 5-year-old boy is in the fourth percentile for weight at just over 33 pounds. Can someone explain these charts to me, or am I thinking too much into it?”

“Don’t worry. He’s just small. If he’s healthy just let him eat as he wants. My kid was in the 95th percentile as a baby. He’s thin now at age 26.”

“I learned not to pay attention to what the chart said my child should be when I had my daughter. She was a preemie and is now 2. She was not even on the charts for the first year of her life and is barely on them now, but she is growing and healthy and that’s all that matters”

“I have a son that has been hanging onto the growth chart for weight since age 5. He is now 11. He eats super healthy, but is skinny as a rail. I was built the same way, but as a girl, I feel like it was accepted more easily. A nutritionist friend of mine gave us some tips for higher healthy fats to add to his diet and he drinks two protein shakes a day, but honestly he is still barely hanging on. I’ve decided to not stress about it any more. He is healthy and happy and I’m told he will eat like crazy when he hits puberty.”

Brittany Arnette

Heather Williams-Wieland

“My oldest was a 50-pound 2 year old. He is currently a 57-pound 10 year old. Went from 100th percentile to 2nd. Honestly, I don’t care for percentiles as long as your kids are healthy and happy. Doc went from freaking out about obesity to now freaking out about fattening him up. And I didn’t change a thing, he’s just skinny. Do what you think is right.”

“Don’t worry unless a doctor tells you it’s a concern. Growth charts just talk about the average, that doesn’t mean the best. If your kid seems happy and healthy, leave him alone.”

Cindi Lovell

Karen Kaye

12 june 2021

Alyssa Hampton Harvey “I gave my little one “shakes” made from organic protein powder. It was her primary nutrition due to feeding issues and it helped her maintain a healthy weight.” Erin Weyman

“As a nurse practitioner, I really look at their trends for weight and height more than just a single time. Truthfully, the charts are created by looking at a lot of kids and then coming up with averages and standard deviation. Personally, a healthy diet and happy kid are more indicative of health than a number. If you did want to try to get something more in him that would help, proteins are essential for both weight and height growth. So a good snack might be a scoop of peanut butter and sliced apples. If he has a balanced diet with a stronger focus on protein, Vegetables, and fruits he will do well long term.” Helen Nation “My daughter is the same way. She will be 4 and is 25 pounds. She’s been on the smaller side since she was born! Our pediatrician isn’t concerned because she’s following her one growth chart. I ignore the percentile because it really doesn’t mean anything; just where they are against other kids their age (I think?) If you’re concerned — which it’s hard not to be — talk with your pediatrician! He can give you recommendations if they have any concerns, but

nashvilleparent.com

no matter what, don’t stress it mama.” Caulean Baldwin “Unless his pediatrician is worried about his weight/height then you don’t need to worry. My 5 year old was in the 98th percentile from birth until she started walking. By age 3 she had dropped to the 7th percentile. The kid eats more than I do!” Tina O’Guin “Genetics plays into this a lot. My kiddos were always on the low percentile, but neither my husband or myself (or our families) are large in height or weight. Your child sounds exactly the size mine were at 5. No worries Mama, just keep feeding him a healthy diet and he will be just the size he is meant to be!” Mary Beth Lynn Clark Join us @NashvilleParentMag for lively insights, conversations and more.

Parties!

By Janie Walker

A Smashing 1st Birthday Party Babies don’t require a lot for their first birthday — but you might. Avoid the tendency to over-do and keep your party easy and light. 18 june 2021

T

he best tidbit of news you’ll hear about a first birthday party for your baby is THEY DON’T CARE! They don’t care if you knock yourself out or if you just have a few friends over. They won’t be aware if it’s a huge party or a little one, but you can guarantee if they start wail-

ing they’ve had enough. Here are tips to make his day terrific!

nashvilleparent.com

Top Tips for Baby’s First Party Easy does it is the modus operandi for your baby’s first birthday. It’s about HIM, afterall. • When planning, start three weeks ahead by choosing a weekend date. Jot down guests (keep it small), decorations, refreshments and activity ideas. Mail evites or snail invitations • Make sure Baby is well-rested before the party • Dress Baby in a cute party outfit • Take photos of your sweetie before guests arrive. • During the party, have someone else take photos so you can tend to your child • Inside or out, you don’t really need a theme, but if you want one, stick with something your baby loves — a story book or color can be a theme

PREP BABY FOR A GOOD

SMASHING!

T

he big moment for the smash cake can be anticlimactic if Baby doesn’t want to cooperate! Of course, guests will want to

• If you can’t stand the idea of smashing a beautiful cake, opt for a cupcake instead • Play games that Baby likes to play like “Patty Cake,” and have activities she enjoys, too, like bubbles, rolling balls, a water table, a swingset or sand box, fingerpainting. Also, play children’s music (not adult rock and roll!) • Know that you may need to whisk Baby away in the event she becomes overwhelmed by people, noise and expectations

watch and have ideas in their heads about Baby going to town

with the cake. To make a successful smash, follow these guidelines from local photographers: • Be aware of Baby’s mood. An energetic and happy baby is a playful baby, not a tired or grouchy (tired!) one. Know that happy baby = good photos. • Make sure your smash cake is at room temperature — Baby can’t smash a frozen cake! • Have towels, paper towels and baby wipes nearby. • Prepare Baby for the cake. Give your little one bites of cake in the days before your party to prepare her for the smash cake moment. • Do your smash cake on the floor and have guests sit, too. • Strip Baby down or put her in a t-shirt and diaper cover so she can make a mess. Don’t spoil her birthday outfit with blue icing! • Relax and prepare to have fun! • Let her get dirty! • Prepare yourself to get dirty, too, since smash cakes can be very messy. • Be sure your photographer is ready and have him take LOTS of photos. • Some babies don’t like certain colors of cakes. Try sticking with a white smash cake.

THINGS TO DO SPECIAL!

FishingWith Kids! On Saturday, June 12, lots of Middle Tennessee fishin’ holes invite youngsters to cast a line free of charge. By Michael W. Aldrich

F

ew memories stick out in our minds as clearly as catching our first fish, and who we were with when we caught it. If you’re needing a special preFather’s Day treat, teach kids the ropes this June and remember, it’s the memories that count the most. Don’t have a fishing permit? No worries! Young angling enthusiasts can bait their hooks and cast their lines for free on Saturday, June 12 during the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency’s (TWRA) Kids’ Fishing Rodeos. On this day only, kids can fish without licenses or fees. It’s a great opportunity to give it a whirl.

40 june 2021

GETTING STARTED The biggest thing to know about going fishing with kids is that it is about spending quality time together. Avoid putting pressure on yourself or the kids by expecting to catch lots of fish or especially big fish: Remember they call it fishing — not catching — for a reason. Patience is the key! Fishing provides a great time to learn more about your kids and to just talk. Kids will remember these moments forever, and it’s the little things that stick with us. It’s not about the big boat; or stopping at nothing to bring home a bucket of fish; or spending time buying all of that high-

nashvilleparent.com

quality fishing equipment. Favorite memories come from laughter, simple surprises and just being together. So before you head out on your first fishing trip this summer, remember: keep it simple! It’s not the time to try out new spots or to practice new techniques. Go to a tried-andtrue location where you know fish will be. Smaller ponds that are well stocked are a great choice, simply because you don’t have to search hard for fish. Just cast out a worm and you’ll be reeling in fish in no time. Here are some “do’s and dont’s” to get the most out of your time fishing together:

DO’S AND DON’TS DO plan for a shorter day Simplicity is key and you don’t want to drag out the day. Set aside enough time for fun, but don’t expect it to go as planned. DO pay attention to weather Is it cool and windy? Chance of rain? This will make a huge difference, especially if you plan on casting your line from a boat. If it rains, don’t grab the umbrellas and head out anyway. There will be more sunny days. DO go to “small” water, especially if your kids are little Small ponds make it easier to catch a fish. As kids grow older, you can start experimenting with larger lakes and heading out on boats. DO choose live bait This is the easiest way to catch a fish if you’re a beginner. If it’s your child’s first time fishing, use live bait such as mealworms or wax worms — everything that swims will eat it. DON’T carry too much Keep your equipment light. The last thing you want is to lug along loads of heavy equipment and use your time together getting it all setup. Your fishing rod, your kids new fishing pole, bait, snacks, sunscreen, water, hand sanitizer and towels. Done.

DON’T stay in one spot Move around and let your kids have a say on where they want to go next. If they are young and you’re not getting a bite for the first five or 10 minutes, move on! DON’T take things for granted Be mindful of where you choose your fishing spot, watch the kids closely, and never let your kids bait a hook or handle fishing equipment by themselves unless they already know how. Guide them through it and assist them with their first cast.

ho’s ready for peanuts and crackerjacks? As of last month, Nashville Sounds home games at First Horizon Park returned to 100 percent capacity for the first time in more than 600 days.
