Parenting Gift: Let Your Child Go! MARLIN I promised I would never let anything happen to him.

That’s a funny thing to promise. Well, if you can’t never let anything happen to him — then nothing would ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo.

ith summer birthdays in the works, let’s take a bead from one of the best children’s movies of all time, Finding Nemo. Nothing could be more perfect. Because a kid’s birthday is so much more than the painstaking effort to throw a shindig in the hopes of making him feel like a star for the day. It’s actually a time for checking in on yourself, too. The birthdays will come and go and so will the years, but what’s the point of it all if not to journey with your child toward maturity and the freedom he needs to live his own life securely and with courage? In Finding Nemo, little, sheltered Nemo grows tired of his father’s constant hovering and supervision. Marlin never lets Nemo do anything! So it is a huge event when Nemo defies his dad by swimming off to touch the “butt” of the boat. But it is only then that Nemo’s own life actually begins. If a child — your child — never has the freedom to decide for himself, he will eventually do something — anything — just to prove that he CAN. At a certain point, you will have to get out of the way; stop rescuing, stop swooping in, stop hovering. The greatest gift you can give your child is to stop controlling so much. The most control you ever have over your child is when he is in the womb. From there on out, he’s moving away from you and it’s your job to guide him. The paradox, of course, is that in letting go of your intense need for control and protection, you actually give your child (and those around him) the freedom to be who he is. You unlock that inherent star within. The star you want your child to feel like on his birthday. But why wait for a birthday? The idea of relinquishing control makes you worry. Me, too. But worrying is parenting. And we’d all throw ourselves in front of a train to save our child. However, worrying too much causes us to hinder our child’s growth. So how do you provide this marvelous gift of letting go? You include and involve your child more and more in his life choices. And yes, it’s exhausting when they are little. But little doesn’t last forever. You ask: “What do you want?” “What do you think?” “Then what?” “What would you do?” “And then what?” You don’t do all of this mental work all by yourself because then you steal from your child the ability to do for himself. Inside every child is a little hero who wants to come out and discover life just like Nemo did. You can encourage this little hero from day one by how you interact with your child, by not controlling every little moment and by recognizing that yes, your child wants to be himself, not you, and it’s his right. None of this is easy! The ocean of life is deep, mysterious and filled with scary monsters who want to eat us. But you can’t just hide away. You have to be courageous, touch the “butt” and go. For your child’s birthday — and everyday — make the effort to respect and trust him enough to provide the space and freedom to make his own choices. Your children will thank you one day for this most precious gift.

TREATING EAR INFECTIONS “I’d do antibiotics for ear infection but no to Tamiflu unless extremely sick (only because of possible side effects in kids of his age). If he gets another ear infection soon after, go to a chiropractor. My middle kiddo (at almost 2) went through three rounds of antibiotics with backto-back ear infections and they told me if he got another one they’d need to have tubes put in. We went to a chiropractor a few times and no more ear infections. He’s 8 now.” Crystal Cameron

“Your baby needs the antibiotics. My oldest child’s ear infection went untreated because doctors missed it and by the time it was caught she was on the verge of being hospitalized. My youngest’s ear drum ruptured due to an ear infection and let me tell you I’ve never heard a more excruciating scream from a child. However, I do not give them Tamiflu because of the nightmares it gave me when I took it.”

“Don’t let your poor baby suffer any more than necessary and definitely give the antibiotics. That’s two hard illnesses at once and I wouldn’t put that baby through that. I have given my kids Tamiflu at that age as well and they all felt so much better and had zero side effects. At least give the antibiotics!”

“My pediatrician was under the impression that most ear infections didn’t require antibiotics and my daughter ended up with a ruptured ear drum. Definitely do the antibiotics for the ear infection.” Katie Michelle “Give the antibiotics for the ear infection, for sure. Ear infections are painful. Severe ear infections can lead to hearing loss. As for Tamiflu, I don’t know enough,

but the flu is nothing to mess with either.” Sheryl Stewart Butler “What would you do if you were the one sick? Would you take the antibiotics? If so, then give them to your child. Tamiflu causes weird reactions at times, so I would be more hesitant on that one for young kids.” Niki Ary “Tamiflu is not a good idea for young children; not sure why they prescribe it. Our doctor never recommends Tamiflu. She has always told us it can make things worse as far as needing hospitalization for dehydration because it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Besides, it isn’t a cure and only takes off maybe a day or two from how long you may be sick. I would give the antibiotics. I’d be scared of a home remedy in this case.” Jessica Shaw “Call your pediatrician’s office back and ask if there is a more natural route. If the ear is

infected seriously already, the antibiotics may be 100 percent necessary and the only route to go. I see a lot of folks have said the same thing over and over on Tamiflu and that is something to note. It’s unusual to see that much agreement. I would monitor the flu symptoms and treat with lots of fluid and avoid the Tamiflu. They usually prescribe antibiotics only when warranted for ear infections. I would have your child eat yogurt as much as possible for the next two weeks as antibiotics wipe the gut clear of good bacteria. I hope your little one feels better soon!” Kelly Peterson “Don’t mess with ear infections. ari Musawwir remembers the exact moment when his love affair with monster trucks began. At 6 year old, his mom took him to a Monster Jam show at the Pontiac Silver Dome in Detroit. “I just kind of fell in love the first time I saw it,” Musawwir says. Since then, a lot has happened for the Cleveland native. After he caught the eye of a Monster Jam executive while racing a remotecontrolled truck at an event in 2006, he was asked a question he’d been waiting for his entire life: “Would you like to try driving a monster truck?” “I’d driven a million times in my mind, but when you have to actually get behind the wheel, it’s a totally different feeling — it’s indescribable,” Musawwir says.

According to Musawwir, a team of technicians maintain the trucks on the road, which allows the drivers to fly home and be with their families during the week. “One of the perks is traveling, but it’s great to be able to do that and not be away from my family for weeks at a time,” he says.
