DAY BY DAY Why We Need to Stop the “Sweeping Away”

ho among us is a lover of conflict? Certainly not I. I love peace. I love when everyone’s getting along and life is easy and light and my kids are doing well. It’s awful and stressful when difficult matters rear up. We all have hard issues in our lives and yet we carry on, telling each other we’re fine. Why? Because not a solitary person wants to know about our misery and woe most of the time. Just look at Facebook. Everybody posts about the great; very few post about the dismal and disturbing. We post to share the good. When things are hard and bad, we retreat, hide, find a corner, lick our wounds. Sometimes difficult issues need light. Sometimes we have to look hard at what we don’t understand and be brave enough to tackle it and hopefully defeat it. If you have kids in school, I’m talking to you, but I’m also talking to parents with babies or with a baby on the way. If you turn to page 33 you’ll see a troubling feature about sexual assault happening among kids. A serious case of it that has been exposed locally (receiving national attention) is the matter at hand. Sexual assault among kids is happening more than we know (see the Associated Press study link on page 34). It’s time to act. What do we do? First, we have to acknowledge that it happens and it’s happening. Second, if you don’t have protection in place on your home computers and on all of the kid phones YOU PAY FOR, get a grip. Put social media monitoring tools in place. Toptenreviews.com spent endless hours reviewing tools for cell phone monitoring and mobile app blocking so you can get parenting controls in place. It’s 2017 and pornography is easily accessible while kids are privately snapping away on Snapchat. I hate that I sound like an old biddy worry wart, but the study conducted by the AP was a huge wake up call. So was the bullying incident gone haywire at a local school. Let’s get smart. Let’s protect our kids and stop sweeping away our conflicts. We can resolve our problems, but we first have to expose them — it’s much more important than a false appearance of peace.

What If ?

We say to our kids, “Use your imagination!” But ... maybe we actually need to teach them to do that.

Last month’s (August, 2017) article was about how you can help your child think “outside of the box” and how to get him to use his imagination. We put the topic on Facebook, too. “It has been clear for many years that the way we have been doing education for the last few decades just doesn’t work. As a society, we empha-

That’s what the teacher says. But what does she mean? Kids hear that kind of prompt but don’t really know what she’s saying. So they nod and try. But what exactly is “thinking outside of the box?” Some sort of vague way of saying, “Use your imagination!” While there’s hardly enough time to teach out-of-the-box thinking in the academic setting, it means to approach problems in new, innovative ways. To think of things on your own. To be intellectually curious and interested in exploring the unknown and to bring it out into the open. Adults are right to encourage kids to “use your imagination,” but plenty of children (and adults) feel a deficit in that department, believing themselves uncreative and leading them to turn in run-of-the-mill work, filled with the bare minimum requirements of an assignment rubric. In an era where kids are often absorbed by one electronic device or another in their spare time, how can you cultivate in them the ability to look at things differently? Originally? Your brilliant child may have the aptitude to conceive of something innovative (and big companies seek minds that are), but if he’s not going to use his imagination, he won’t be able to come up with much.

DO YOUR PART

The National Education Association says the “Four Cs” — creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration — are the skills most important for 21st century learning. And while we can press repeat on the “Four Cs” over and over again, it doesn’t mean much if it’s not put into action. With iPads doing much of the heavy lifting for preschool imaginations, parents must limit screens for more free time for dreaming, playing and individual interests. Ignite your child’s imagination ... or not. Start at home while your young child is putty in your hands. Try to purposefully raise him in a creative environment where screen time is balanced — planned and managed just like daily meals. Give him a head start in discovering his unique abilities as he grows by giving him chances to explore his creativity. Here are easy, doable things you can do, beginning with the great “What if?”

The “What if?” exercise is a great way to encourage a laid-back, non judgmental approach to open-ended thinking. The exercise helps kids generate a lot of potential ideas and research shows creative people tend to be idea factories.

1. USE “POSSIBILITY THINKING”

Ask your child “What if?” in as many ways as possible. When he comes to you for help, turn it around on him rather than jumping in and solving it. Asking “What if?” helps him think of creative possibilities, says Colleen Kessler, former teacher, gifted specialist and author of numerous books including Raising Creative Kids: A Collection of Simple Creativity Prompts for Children (Create Space Publishing Platform; 2016). It will change his thinking from “What is this and what does it do?” to “What can I do with this?”

2. NURTURE INTERESTS

Creativity and imagination blooms when kids feel passion for activities they enjoy. Let THEM choose their activities and explore them in depth, Kessler says. If your child loves playing with trains, then find train activities for him — build trains, go see trains, study train history, write about trains, color trains, paint trains, act like a train.

3. READ, READ, READ

It’s the great mental stimulator of our society and yet parents lose the reading battle daily to electronic endeavors. It was Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) who said so craftily, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” It can’t be said enough to start young with reading by doing it and encouraging it. Read stories at bedtime, read at the table, read while kids are in the bath, read, read, read. Go to the library, go

to storytimes, read in front of them, love it, talk about it ... READ! As your child grows, ask questions about what he’s reading. Ask “What if?” a lot. And don’t fill in the blanks for him. When you ask “What if?” ... wait. Wait for him to reply. Wait. Then listen carefully to what happens next.

4. GO AHEAD, MAKE MISTAKES

So many times, maybe it’s because we hate to see our children struggle, we rush in and save them. This is actually the opposite approach if you want your child to be creative, says Peggy Drexler, Ph.D., author and research psychologist. “Children develop self-confidence when they figure things out on their own. Letting your child try and try again — and eventually getting it right on his own — teaches him about himself, about life and about problem solving.”

5. MINIMIZE SCREEN TIME

In our tech-saturated world, a kid’s right brain is often underactive when it’s hooked up to a screen device, says Victoria L. Dunckley, M.D., author of Reset Your Child’s Brain: A Four Week Plan to End Meltdowns, Raise Grades and Boost Social Skills by Reversing the Effects of Electronic Screen Time (New World Library; 2015). Creative activities stimulate the right brain, so parents have to go out of their way to make them happen. It’s hard for parents to fight the endless lure of the iPad and smartphone, but many educators now say it’s the most important battle to wage for your child’s creative abilities.

6. TAKE AN ARTS CLASS

Over and over again, research supports the importance of arts in a child’s education, but many times academics are always put first. Take matters into your own hands if your child’s arts education is lacking. “If children are exploring and thinking and experimenting and trying new ideas, then creativity has a chance to blossom,” says MaryAnn Kohl, an arts educator and author of numerous books about children’s art education. After all, WHAT IF you just let your children be on their devices all day long without talking or doing anything else but that? Susan Day is editor of this publication. MIND & BODY Not much is new about ear infections in tots, except, if your child’s prone to them and you smoke, he’s 86 percent more likely to need ear surgery one day. By Kiera Ashford

ries erupt the silence of the night. Your little guy’s awake and needs you. After the routine bottle and a clean diaper, he’s still not comfortable. That’s when you notice a slight fever, but there are no other symptoms. Could it be an ear infection?

KNOW THE SIGNS When it comes to big kids and what ails them, sometimes it’s easy as asking a question or two. However, when it comes to a baby, it’s his non-verbal cues you need to pay attention to, and an ear infection is one of the hardest things to detect. “A fever is the hallmark of ear infections, with many children exceeding 102 degrees,” says Siva Chinnadurai, M.D., MPH, associate professor of otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A fever could be just the first sign, though. Chinnadurai says a loss in appetite and fussiness are also signs of a possible ear infection. Another common sign she says is ear pulling or tugging, but she also says this is seen with teething — which makes it even more difficult for you to know if it’s associated with an ear infection or not.

REPEATED INFECTIONS Over time, if your child has repeated ear infections, you may begin to wonder what could happen to his ears. Chinnadurai says although it’s unlikely that permanent damage can occur from multiple ear infections, some recurrent perforations of the eardrum from severe infec-

tions could affect hearing in the long term (you can recognize eardrum perforations from pus draining from the ear). She also adds that very young children — particularly those younger than 2 who have less developed immune systems — are slightly more likely to develop rare complications, such as infections of the bone behind the ear. “Another long-term risk to consider is antibiotic resistance,” says Chinnadurai. “If kids are on antibiotics too frequently, this can contribute to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat.”

EAR TUBES Ears are built with natural drainage tubes — Eustachian tubes — that allow fluid to drain out and air to fill the middle part of the ear. If your child experiences frequent ear infections, those tubes may not work properly Chinnadurai says. In this case, ear tubes may be inserted by an ENT surgeon with the use of a microscope. Although tubes can be placed in babies and children, Chinnadurai says it’s unlikely to have enough ear problems that your pediatrician or ENT would recommend them before 6 - 8 months old. “Ear tubes are meant to help [drainage] by creating another path for liquid to leave the ear and for air to get in,” says Chinnadurai noting they help to decrease the number of infections, make it easier to diagnose infections when they occur and allow for treatment with antibiotic drops. “Using drops minimizes the side effects that

come with oral antibiotics such as upset stomach, diarrhea and yeast infections,” assures Chinnadurai.

CLEANING BABY’S EARS Clean Baby’s ears by simply wiping the outside of the ear’s opening with a warm washcloth — during bath time. “Occasionally, your healthcare provider may recommend something more, such as diluted hydrogen peroxide,” says Chinnadurai. “This shouldn’t be done unless recommended, and you should never try to clean your baby’s ear canal by inserting something into it.”

PREVENTION Did you know that a major, preventable contributor to ear infections is exposure to cigarette smoke? “While the smoke itself irritates the lining of the ears, it also prevents the natural cleaning function of the ears,” says Chinnadurai. “This increases fluid in the ears and prevents it from being cleared out, thereby increasing the risk of infections.” She says that kids are 37 percent more likely to have ear disease and 86 percent more likely to need ear surgery if their parents smoke. Another cause for ear infections is the way you feed your baby. “Feeding babies while they’re flat on their back can allow liquid to move up the Eustachian tube and into the ears,” adds Chinnadurai. A mix of meditation, yoga postures/breathing and baby/ miniature goat interaction, the craze began on an Oregon farm in 2016 and quickly caught on. We gave it a whirl at Goat Yoga Nashville in Brentwood and had a blast. Owner Melody Nash says goat yoga’s a hit with women looking for a unique girls’ night out activity, but families are welcome, too. “We have a lot of women with high-stress jobs who come out regularly,” says Nash. Eleven Nigerian dwarf goats interact with participants in a fenced farm meadow. The clean, friendly goats hop on backs and mingle for a full hour, with a solid yoga session led by instructor Mia Diaz Kostic. “This is the most joyful class I’ve ever taught,” Kostic says. “How you react on your mat is how you react in life!” — Chad Young

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) says guided play at young ages boosts language development and spatial skills. “Play provides a natural, comfortable setting for young children to develop,” says Kyle Snow, Ph.D., director of the Center for Applied Research at the NAEYC. “All the greats in our ﬁeld have said that play is children’s work, but it is also adult work. We in early education must better understand the role of play in the lives of young children,” he adds.

he school year started out great, but now your child is struggling. What happened? She doesn’t quite understand the new math concept, she’s definitely down in the dumps, avoiding her homework ... you’re at a loss. When teachers start getting into their curriculum, things move fast. If a child gets behind, it can be difficult to catch up, resulting in a fall that can last all year long. At what point should you be concerned? Is your child just having trouble with a difficult concept or could it be a learning disability? What steps should you take? How do you get the support she needs to be successful? First, breathe. Second, learn more.

LEARNING DISABILITY: SUCH A LOADED TERM The term learning disability is an “umbrella” term that covers a wide range. It’s “a condition giving rise to difficulties in acquiring

knowledge and skills to the level expected of those of the same age, especially when not associated with a physical handicap.” The Tennessee Department of Education defines a specific learning disability as “a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculations and that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.” A learning disability does not include learning problems that could be a result of visual, hearing, motor delays, cognitive delays, emotional delays or an environmental/cultural/ economic disadvantage.

MY CHILD IS STRUGGLING. NOW WHAT? Contact your child’s teacher and request a meeting. You know your child best, so if you

suspect something’s amiss, keep bringing it up to the teacher. Make the situation known and schedule that meeting, then share the reasons why you’re concerned citing specific examples. Keep an ongoing open line of communication with the teacher and work together to problem solve. Questions to ask: • Could it be a learning disability? • Is there an attention in the classroom? • Are there negative behaviors getting in the way of your child’s learning? • What can you do to support your child at home? • What supports are available at school? If there’s concern about your child’s progress in class, the teacher may recommend she receive some Tier 2 supports at school. Tier 2 supports are additional interventions on top of the typical classroom instruction and may include Title 1 reading services, Read (please turn the page)

WHEN DO IEP’S BECOME INVOLVED?

Naturally or small group pullout for additional reading/writing/math support. If her teacher recommends a Tier 2 support, follow up with the teacher six weeks after the intervention is put in place to check on progress. During this meeting, the teacher reports if she’s making adequate progress and closing the gap. If the data shows the intervention is working, continue with the interventions in place. However, if the data shows she’s still not making the progress expected, the teacher may recommend special education testing, or you can request that she be evaluated for special education services. If the decision is made to pursue special education testing, you’ll be asked to sign a consent form and an evaluation team will collect data within 60 days about your child from you, classroom observation, direct testing, attendance and behavior as well as looking at vision and hearing test results.

If the team decides to pursue special education testing the process will begin. Once IQ, academic testing and the cumulative file have been reviewed, you’ll meet with school staff to discuss the data and next steps for your child. These may include special education services and an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). An important thing to remember is to keep your emotions aside. Let the data show you how your child is progressing and work with the teacher as a team to come up with solutions to help your child succeed. If she’s eligible for special education services, the team will work on creating an individualized plan for her which will include interventions to help her learn new concepts, establish goals, put in place accommodations as needed and determine how her progress will be measured. This may be through measured, direct observation, work samples, assessment, curriculum based measurements, trial, etc.

Child-on-Child Sexual Violence Comes Home to Roost.

Entering the age of cracking voices and pimples, kids are vulnerable and in need of protection more than ever.

HOW DID WE GET HERE? by Susan Day

he universal Law of Polarity states that all things have a polar opposite: within every failure there is potential for success. There is happy and sad, love and hate, win and lose, good and evil, and on and on. In all environments this polarity potential exists. Take a school environment, for instance. Like a locker room. The leaders and the followers, the weak and the strong, the bullies and the bullied. Polarity exists through all stages of life, but perhaps it’s in middle school — just when kids are trying to sort out who they are, where they “stand” and who likes or who doesn’t like them — where the polarity law is at its most intense.

Kids reach sexual maturity at different ages, with scattered guidance from the adults and other kids in their lives. Kids can learn about sexuality online, too. In 2017, where access to pornography is widespread online, all kinds of “lessons” can be found. According to an extensive 2017 study of adolescents in the UK by Middlesex University, of the 1,000 children and young adults studied, 46 percent reported searching for pornography graphically. Now let’s look at social media use among kids. Snapchat, specifically, and the activity of sharing images — any images — knowing that within seconds the fun and handy little app will erase the image forever. Kids often go to sleep holding their phones, and they check their social media sites before brushing their teeth in the morning. Kids can also screenshot images and share them via text, often to be shared and shared again. Now mix all of this up. Combine the Law of Polarity with puberty, sexual curiosities, easy

access to porn and the unmonitored “underground” world of Snapchat and you pretty much have a snapshot of teenage life today. Of course, this is not ALL kids are interested in, but they are ALL aware of it and for some, it can distort all other healthier interests. Left unchecked, it can lead to disaster.

LOOK & LISTEN Here in the South, we’ve heard about sexual abuse in private schools in the North. We know that adults have sexually assaulted students. We know adults sexually abuse children all over the world every day, but we’ve heard very little about child-on-child sexual abuse — certainly not here at home. The South has a storied history of sweeping unsavory topics “under the rug,” yet we know that it’s the wrong course of action. When it comes to children and sexual abuse, “turning the other cheek” and “boys being boys” are illadvised permissive clichés that have no place in a kid’s healthy sexual development. CHILD-ON-CHILD ABUSE Whether or not child-onchild sexual assault is linked to pornography is not known, but it can be theorized. The Internet is a key part in young lives, and if kids don’t have access to honest sexual health information, it can have devastating consequences. Bullying is linked to child-onchild assault, and we all know that bullying runs rampant in schools even with all of our good adult attempts to dismantle it and “be nice.” The truth is, in a middle or high school locker room filled with teens changing clothes and no adult supervision or cameras, “things” can happen instantly. A bully can find his victim, a life can be damaged forever. Adults everywhere must take their heads out of the sand to become emboldened protectors of innocent children. am*, 12, recently started seventh grade at a new school. At his old school, Sam was sexually abused by older peers. A small group of boys — known around the school as bullies — had attacked and assaulted him in the restroom. The incident was traumatic and had a devastating impact on Sam and his family. Sam became extremely fearful of going to school. He dropped out of extracurricular activities, showed signs of depression and anxiety, his grades declined and he avoided using the restroom at school as much as possible. After learning about the incident and reporting it (Tennessee Law mandates immediately reporting abuse to Children’s

Services or the police), Sam and his parents began working with therapists who specialize in sexual assault counseling. Sam began the long and arduous road to healing. Unfortunately, stories like Sam’s are not uncommon: one in four girls and one in six boys will experience sexual abuse before they turn 18, and according to a 2012 Crimes Against Children Research Report, as many as 40 percent of children who are sexually abused are abused by older, more powerful children.

UNOBVIOUS REASONS When people typically think about child sexual abuse, they envision an adult abusing a child. While this is very common, unfortunately, in Tennessee, about 19 percent of the time, it is a child abusing another child. The reasons children sexually harm others are complicated, varied and not always obvious. Most experts believe that children raised in abusive homes learn that violence is an effective way to resolve conflicts and problems. They may replicate the violence they witnessed as children in their teen and adult relationships and become abusive themselves or known as a bully. Bullies view violence as an acceptable way to interact with peers. They look to gain power and control over another and they lack the appropriate interpersonal skills to treat others respectfully. These issues are also true with children and teen’s interaction with social media. Social media can be a platform for connecting and providing positive communication, but it can also be used in very negative ways. Platforms like Snapchat make it easy for kids and teens to cyberbully and perpetuate sexual violence. Teens are able to hide behind their screens and post harmful

and abusive information and images about other students. Once that information is in cyberspace, it can’t be taken back and often results in a never-ending cycle of “shares” reaching an endless number of people. Bullying and cyber-bullying may start off with small situations or problems, but if these are not addressed, the bullying may become more aggressive and harmful.

HEALTHY STARTS Often children and teens are not taught what healthy relationships and boundaries look and feel like. Conversations with kids about these topics must begin at a young age in homes and schools. Talk with your child about body safety and boundaries. As your child grows, continue having age-appropriate conversations about healthy relationships and how to be an active bystander if he sees something he thinks is wrong. In order to do this, he needs you in his life to talk to about these difficult topics. He also needs to know you will respect his boundaries and are willing to help if the need arises. If you suspect or your child discloses sexual abuse to you, try to remain calm. Let him know this is not his fault and that you believe him. Then let him know that you need to report this to the appropriate authorities so you can get him help. Having conversations with children and adults is a pathway to sexual assault prevention.
