There’s No Place Like Home

By the time you read this, the 2025 Oscars will have taken place. Writing this, I don’t know if “Wicked”will win best picture or not. It doesn’t really matter, but we expect a lot out of movies today. Hello, CGI. Hello, A.I. And of course “Wicked” is asequel to a sequel to a sequel. Yet it sprang from a very humble beginning that urges us to note how imperative humble beginnings are ... and how we can get oh so lost.

It starts with L. Frank Baum’s published-in-1900 “The Wizard of Oz,” about a Kansas farm girl who ends up in the magical Land of Oz after she and her dog are swept away by a tornado. Baum wrote the story for his children, creating colorful characters and a fun fairy tale filled with wonder and joy. Why? To entertain his bored kids! For all of time parents have had to fill in the gaps.

In 1939 — 20 years after Baum’s death — “The Wizard of Oz” became a major motion picture (it earned a mere $3 million on a $2.7 million budget). It wasn’t until 1959 that the film began amassing throngs of fans, broadcasting annually on TV all the way to 1991. Families would gather together on their couches for the cinematic once-a-year event. There was no binging then; it was all about this one special night. And today, according to the U.S. Library of Congress, “The Wizard of Oz”is the most watched movie of all time.

Remember: a dad just doing something special for his kids.

In 2003, “Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz” premiered on Broadway and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Broadway shows of all time, currently topping $1.25 billion. Next, the 2025 blockbuster film cost $145 million to make and has now grossed $727.7 million worldwide. Now we have to wait for part two — what a cash cow! Still ... a story for children.

In 1900, people had no devices or access to all the platforms on the World Wide Web. Children’s days were filled with imaginative play and lessons. Parents fed kids what they wanted them to know; they couldn’t expose their children to what was happening in the big, bad world around them because they weren’t connected to it. They were free from the pressures of the wild and unruly zeitgeist. That would have been nice.

Today, many of us parents are off course with kids and we can’t get a handle on what’s bothering them. Once they have a device, they go underground and become sort of lost to us. Meanwhile, depression among children is sky high with factors like too much screen time (eye rolls here) and social media (eye rolls here) wrecking their mental health. It’s hard to know what to do.

If Baum could see our current parenting predicament, maybe he’d say something like: But you’re giving your children away! All in the name of being ‘current!’ You only get them for a little while; you must protect them from the world as long as possible. Don’t give in to what everyone else is doing just because everyone else is doing it. Create fun things for your kids to do — and do those things with them. Your kids need you; don’t abandon them! And if your kids are already lost down that yellow brick road, you know, you actually CAN bring them back. You’re the parent!”

It started with a girl who ran away from home ... and when she was lost, all she really, really wanted was to get back home again. Equate that to your kids today. Maybe we all need to hear it. And, as my brother used to say, “Wicked!”

Nurturing the Parent/ Child Relationship

In our crazy, partial attention-paying world, prioritizing your family is the greatest indicator of your children’s future happiness. It’s never too soon to start!

Don’t cut the kids out, invite them in. Don’t think that day-to-day life will be that much easier (and quicker!) if you simply do everything yourself. Don’t just leave kids to their iPads — involve them in the living of life.

The parent/child relationship is about so much more than our kids just being there. It’s about more than discipline and making sure they have pants that fit. The parent/child relationship is complicated and requires nurturing — on your part.

Along with nurturing, kids need structure. They need you to set boundaries. They need natural consequences when they make bad choices. You may worry that consequences for actions will make your kids defiant or actually hurt your relationship, but the opposite is true. Giving boundaries with consequences when kids step out of line makes them feel safe, loved and seen. Even if they don’t show it in the heat of the moment, they want you to parent them. Your kids should be a work in progress. And each one is very dif(please turn the page)

ferent from the next. Some may be like you; others you may wonder where they came from. And every stage in their lives is different, too. So, what’s the best way to approach parenting kids?

The broadest agreement among experts like Leonard Sax M.D., Ph.D., bestselling author of The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt Our Kids When We Treat Them Like GrownUps (Basic Books) is on authoritative parenting. It seems to work best as a parenting approach that is “nurturing, responsive and supportive,” yet at the same time, sets firm limits and boundaries.

PHYSICAL CONTACT

Touch is one of the easiest ways to nurture your parent/child relationship. Give hugs! Your kids need them and so do you. If hugging is awkward for you (maybe you didn’t get them a lot growing up), start with a pat on the back or an arm around the shoulder and work up to being a hugger. Make up a handshake to use with your little kids. Put your arm around your big kids when you’re talking. Scratch their backs when you’re walking side by side. Have a welcoming response when they walk into a room.

Be a safe space for one-on-one interactions with your kids, witholding judgment so they will talk to you. It’s your job to figure out how to get each of your kids to open up — attention must be paid.

“The quality of the parent/child relationship predicts good outcomes down the road,” Sax says. “It is of immense importance in decreasing the risk of anxiety and depression and in improving all kinds of good outcomes for your children; building that relationship has to be your first priority,” he adds.

Here are ways to build your relationships:

TURN OFF YOUR ELECTRONICS

Yes, TURN IT ALL OFF. Technology hinders relationships. Every now and then, sitting on my computer or on my phone, I realize I have a child sitting next to me. There are so many things to keep track of; who’s driving which carpool, emails about everything under the sun, social media itching to be scrolled through, weather broadcasts, news, even scripture pulls me in. It can all make you lose balance. And my child is just sitting there. Phew. At the end of the day, you just may realize that you forgot to look into your child’s eyes that day.

Have your kids take breaks from their electronics, too.

“Part of your job as a parent is to educate desire,” Sax says. “To teach your child to go beyond ‘whatever floats your boat,’ to enjoy and to want to enjoy, pleasures higher and deeper than video games and social media can provide,” he adds.

HAVE FAMILY HOME NIGHTS

Creating specific time for family works wonders for parent/child relationships. It’s a game-changer in this fast-paced world of ours.

As far as dinners go, when you sit down together you can talk about your ups and downs for the day. It can really help to prioritize this built-in time to talk everything over and know what’s happening in each other’s lives.

HOLD MONTHLY INTERVIEWS — REALLY!

Whether it’s the first Sunday of the month or casually on a little lunch date, interview your kids. Ask questions. Listen to their answers. Remember to ask what they’re most worried about and what they’re most

BE A SAFE SPACE

Take the time to figure out how you can open your kids up more and keep at it. Cooking together in the kitchen is great because you’re all in close proximity, and things come up.

Gardening together is all about nurturing! And go ahead and stretch out on your kids’ beds at night for a little one-on-one because that’s when kids open up the most, when you’re just hanging out. And don’t forget the one-on-one dates.

WORK ON YOURSELF

If you are approachable, available and non-judgy toward your kids, they will naturally want to be with you and open up to you. That’s really it.

DEVELOP THICK SKIN

Kids can be brutally honest without realizing it. Take the negative things that your kids say with a grain of salt. Most of the time, they are just trying to get a reaction without even realizing what they are doing. You just need to be a “durable object” and practice the “love and logic” method (Parenting With Love and Logic: Teaching Children Responsibility by Foster Cline and Jim Fay). So if one of your kids says, “I don’t like you!,” or, “I hate you!,” or “ You’re grouchy!” you simply say, “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that you think that way,” and move on. No emotion. Amazingly, if you show no emotion, the whole thing will just slip away.

AIM TO HAVE FUN

Oh, and one more thing. Have fun and lighten up. Life doesn’t have to be so serious! Sometimes you can forget in the middle of all the other important stuff that just enjoying the day matters. Joke, laugh and play together to create core memories that help strengthen the parent/child relationship.

Relationships are a constant work in progress, but at the end of the day, you’ll all sleep better if you don’t make everything so heavy. Afterall, “kids grow up fast,” says Sax. “You want to find time to do fun things with your kids. Make family dates. Parents do all kind of chores with their kids, but you need to make time to do fun things, too.”

This lovely new playground that (opened last summer) includes a giant tower, two playgrounds, a merry-goround, a digging zone, workout equipment, a basketball court and more. There’s plenty of shaded area, too. It’s a refreshing addition to the Donelson-Hermitage area of east Davidson County, and one of the best parks and playgrounds in Nashville.

Opened in the summer of ’23, this massive park (the largest in Davidson County) includes a 52-foot slide that towers above the rubber-turf playground. Included are a spherical merry-go-round, jungle gym, towers, a basketball court and lots of green space.

BlueCross Healthy Place at Barfield Crescent 697 Veteran’s Pkwy., Murfreesboro, TN 37218

Opened in 2021, this fully accessible playground includes a large play areas for kids ages 2 – 5, as well as additional space for kids ages 5 – 12. Furthermore, there’s an inclusive swing set, freestanding play and climbing areas. Made possible through a grant from the BlueCross Healthy Place initiative, teens and adults will also find a fitness station with a variety of equipment and instructional signage.

The giant mosaic Dragon (aka sea serpent) has been in place at this park since the 80s and was completely refurbished recently by a community effort. Kids climb on and around it and it provides ample space to sit. The newly updated playground has nice, bright equipment, although Lily’s Garden (the special needs portion of the playground) appears to have been scaled back. The playground gets a lot of shade from adjacent trees and the fresh grass surface is a nice spot for a picnic.

Tucked between mature trees, this beautiful playground opened in the summer of ’22 as the happy result of a community effort to upgrade the play space. There is separate equipment for older and younger kids, including a zip line, fire truck, merry-go-round, a climbing rope and slides.

The children’s playground is large and often busy, regardless of the season. There are two large jungle gyms that are geared towards different aged children. There are smaller shelters nearby and plenty of swings and shade both for children and adults. Plus, there is a water fountain next to the playground.

How to Get a Little to Read for Fun

The recently released National Assessment of Education Progress paints a sad picture of children’s reading levels. Here, parents share how you can play the biggest role in helping your young kids to enjoy books and stories.

Anew report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) paints a somber picture of children’s reading levels. The report — based on 2024 test scores — found that a record-low number of fourth and eighth-grade students in the U.S. had below-basic reading skills. This means that the slide in reading achievement has continued and the joy of reading for pleasure is in decline.

Below Basic

According to the NAEP report, one-third (33%) of eighth graders had “below-basic” reading skills — the largest number since the exam began in 1969. Additionally, 40% of fourth graders’ reading skills were considered “below-basic,” the most in two decades. While not all kids are going to love reading, research shows that parents who try to help develop a love of reading in their children early in life actually make a difference. But many adults see the lack of reading for pleasure issue as a cultural one caused by phones and (please turn the page)

algorithm-driven media consumption affecting the younger generations. It’s true that today’s children and adults both watch more video on their phones than they ever used to. To counter this power, here are suggestions from a variety of parents on different online forums (The Bump; Mothering; Parenting Forums) who have fought the hate-to-read battle with their kids:

Don’t Wait to Start

“Don’t wait too long to start reading to your kids. Read to your 1-week-old, read to your 6-monthold, listen to audiobooks around them or read your own adult book out loud to your infant. This puts both the parent and child in the habit of reading every day and is hugely beneficial for language development.”

“Read to your kids, but also read in front of your kids. Read your own books in their presence for fun.”

The Holy Grail of reading joy begins with the bedtime stories. Don’t skip them. Read to your infants even if it seems ridiculous. It’s Not.

“Read to them as children, and limit their access to screens. Let them choose their own books, and never say ‘no’ when they ask for a new book.”

Encourage Their Interests

“Find out what interests them. My kid is not interested in the books I liked as a kid. She likes to pick her own.”

“We got our girl an e-reader since she wanted to drag books along anytime we were going out. Also, even if we need to discipline her, book access is never taken away.”

“Kids love taboo stuff, mysterious stuff, forbidden stuff. You have to get them books that push those limits. My daughter is obsessed with horror and with shipwrecks and with dark history. You gotta show them that they can find out secrets in books.”

“We took adventures to the library so they could bring home stacks of books and we always made time for reading.”

“I was an English teacher for a few years and the most success I found was in finding a way to encourage interests that the child already had.”

Let Them Be Around It

“Put them in situations where they have little else to do. Let them hang out with older family members who also love reading.”

“The best way to get kids to see reading as a pleasure is to read in front of them. Some people tell their kids to eat fruit and read a lot, but they don’t like fruit or enjoy reading themselves. Kids are quick to pick up on that.”

Bedtime Reading

“With my kid, we read to her every night, and even now that she can read herself, we still have reading time every night as part of her bedtime routine.”

“We’ve always had a 30-minute reading time before bed.”

“Read to them every night, and read them good stuff. Read longer books together even when they’re little (we started with Charlotte’s Web as our first chapter book when my kids were 3). Go to the library every other week and get a new bunch of picture books. Have lots of good books in the house that they can read over and over. Let them see you read, too. Limit their screen time so that they have to find other ways to amuse themselves most days. When they give up naps, replace nap time with quiet time and let them look at stacks of books in their room. Let them stay up an extra half hour to read (we started this long before our kids were actually reading solo). Graphic novels are an excellent gateway into reading. Listen to audiobooks in the car.”

Don’t Force or Criticize

“I know one thing you should avoid and that is forcing it on them. I have a friend who read everyday for almost all his childhood due to his parents making him and has since never touched a book.”

“What ever you do, do not criticize whatever past time they have instead of reading or force them to read past a certain age/reading level.”
