“Y

ou call this a happy family? Why do we have to have all of these kids?” George Bailey cries out to his wife as he’s nearing the end of his rope in the classic film, It’s a Wonderful Life. My own movie-loving parents sometimes delivered that line when things got a little hairy in their life with five kids. While they were kidding, it definitely tipped us off to the wild, grown-up ride they were on with us. We witnessed big ups and downs, but a lot of love, too. So let’s look at that. Couples fall in love and get married before going through the enormous life changes that accompany the arrival of a newborn. How can seven or so pounds of infant cause so much fuss? Don’t get me wrong, and don’t blame the baby. Yet, while jokes are made about the lack of a parenting manual for new babies, what about the manual for couples heading into parenthood? While a wide number of things can be blamed for why marriages fall apart, according to 2019 data collected from businessinsider.com, the number one reason why marriages fall apart is ... are you ready for this? ... lack of commitment. A whopping 75 percent of couples in the survey say it was lack of commitment that played the largest part in the demise of their marriages. Yes, “lack” can be defined in a number of ways. You start with two people who say “I do,” and who really, really feel that way when they say it. But humans are ultra complicated and fickle. We change. We get bored. We get overwhelmed. We don’t want to DO IT ANYMORE. We want something new. Something more exciting than ... THIS. But hold on, other data shows that what men and women really want in all of life is to be in a committed, fulfilling relationship. So what gives? Well, according to Psychology Today, in order, it breaks down like this: Women want 1) Loving devotion in a committed relationship; 2) Thoughtful, honest behavior; 3) Generosity of spirit; and 4) Satisfying sex. On the other hand, men want 1) Sex; 2) Freedom; 3) Forgiveness; and 4) Appreciation. Big differences there. Now compare the lists and think about what happens when children come into the picture. Moms get exhausted. Dads get under appreciated. They stop making time for each other. You MUST make time for each other without the kids! Bringing a baby into the healthiest of marriages wreaks havoc, so couples need to commit like they did when they stood at the altar. It’s an intense transition, so you need to support each other all the way through. Commit to keeping intimacy intact even if you have to schedule your just-us time. Commit to keeping intimacy alive, but if it feels jeopardized, seek out support from your church or from another couple who’ve made it. One big truth speaks volumes to your life with kids: Strong parental relationships build happy children. Hear it: You two first, the kids second!

Protect Your Kids from Second-Hand

Vaping A new study shows that adults living with children are more likely to vape than those without. Enter the risk of the “new” secondhand smoke.

hile plenty of adults who were once hooked on cigarettes have found a way to wean themselves using e-cigs, a new concern has entered the arena. According to a new study published last May in the journal Jama Pediatrics, 4.9 percent of American adults living with a child younger than 18 report using e-cigarettes. Adults living with children who do not use e-cigarettes came in at 4.2 percent. The authors of the study — out of Maine Medical Center — say this could be because of the younger age of e-cigarette users mixed with the perception that vaping is safer than smoking. But is it? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaping use is steadily increasing. And while there’s growing concern about the toxic ingredients in e-cigs (the aerosol contains high concentrations of nicotine; tobacco-specific nitrosamines; and heavy metal that leaks

from the e-cig’s heating coils), many parents think the watery vapor is safe for kids, according to a study published in Pediatrics in March 2019. Researchers found that only one in five parents who use e-cigarettes have strict rules against vaping in their homes and cars. The lead author, Jonathan Winickoff, M.D., is the director of pediatric research at the Tobacco Research and Treatment Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. Winickoff says parents are vaping in front of their children without understanding what the effects are and what the science shows already.

SECOND-HAND VAPE

The Pediatrics study — which includes responses from parents in Tennessee — shows kids can get nicotine into their systems in three ways: • By inhaling the aerosol their parents vape. • By ingesting the nicotine and other toxic compounds left on surfaces: The aerosol can coat floors, bedrooms, kitchens and

anywhere else vaping occurs. Little ones crawling around on floors can get it on their hands which can go to their mouths. • By absorbing it directly through the skin: Kids’ skin is thinner, so just like an adult who is trying to quit smoking might put a nicotine patch on his skin, a child whose parents vape can absorb the substance that way. Winickoff says while parents are trying to use vape products to protect their kids, research shows they are actually using the vapes right in front of their kids — the same way parents used cigarettes before the dangers of second-hand smoke became realized. Parents using e-cigs are more likely to safeguard their younger children from their vaping, according to the Pediatric’s study, but we now know that e-cigarettes are dangerous for kids of all ages. Not to mention the fact that just seeing parents vape increases the chances that the kids will go on to become vapers, too.

Every year, the Titans Training Camp takes place at Saint Thomas Sports Park in Metro Center (460 Great Circle Road, Nashville). Yes, Everything Changes When the baby is born, parents are born. Prepare for the big adjustments to come from balancing household jobs to talking about money to keeping your intimacy alive. BY SUSAN DAY

1. DOMESTIC JOBS

The key to getting the mundane chores of changing diapers, washing clothes and keeping up with the hundreds of items that make up cohabitation is having a clear, direct and honest conversation about it before Baby comes home, says Jancee Dunn in How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids (Little Brown; 2018). While it may sound extreme, literally tacking up a chore list may help with the awareness of duties. The goal is to collaborate with mutual respect — as allies. You’ll both be zombies for awhile, so you may as well admit you’re in it together.

2. PARENTING

When the time is good, talk together and see if you can find common ground about raising your child. How will you discipline? What about bedtimes? Are you authoritative? Permissive? “Research consistently demonstrates that children of authoritative parents are more likely to enjoy positive relationships with their peers, do well in school and to become independent children,” says author Lisa Damour in her book Under Pressure (Ballantine; 2019). Food for thought.

3. SEX

Lack of sleep, the changing dynamic between the two of you and just a general ennui about sex may dominate Mom’s life for a while as she recuperates from delivering a baby. But know that physical intimacy is majorly important for both of you in order for you not to start feeling like roommates. The best way to have better sex is simply to have more sex, says Helen Fisher, Ph.D., author of Why We Love: The Nature and Chemistry of Romantic

Love (Holt; 2005). Take advantage of a few stolen moments here or there — even if you have to schedule it.

4. EACH OTHER TIME

It’s incredibly common for couples to begin neglecting each other after the baby arrives — guard against it. If you start thinking that you’re losing touch with each other, ask yourself, “What would I be thinking, doing or saying right now if we were having an affair?” says Diana Kirschner, Ph.D., author of Love in 90 Days (Center Street; 2019). Of course, this isn’t about actual infidelity; it’s about seeing each other the way you did before — when you weren’t collapsing and snoring all night.

5. IN-LAWS

The boundaries you set and the understandings you reach with your in-laws will help prevent unwanted interference as your child grows, says Susan Newman, author of The Book of No (Turner; 2017). Be gracious and honest, emphasizing how much you want them to connect with their new grandchild, while acknowledging your preferences. It is essential to talk this through as a couple, too, so you can both steer your parents in helpful directions by finding the right way to speak to them and considering what they are good at when it comes to Baby.

6. MONEY

Your sweet baby can cost you a bundle, and costs will be a bone of contention between you. It’s possible to shell out upward of $12,980 annually for your child, according to the most recent data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which has been tracking

the cost of raising children since 1960. Research from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology indicates nine out of 10 new parents report a decrease in relationship happiness during the first year of their baby’s life, and it’s often due to money changes. What to do? Financial guru Dave Ramsey has tips for the first year: 1) Focus on the basics; 2) Borrow items when you can; 3) Bargain shop; 4) Gather and sell items you no longer need. In general, though, remember you are in this together and all will settle down eventually.

7. SCORE KEEPING

It can be a slippery slope that starts with, “Well, I’ve done the last two diaper changes ...” No matter what, you WILL get into a little score-keeping if Baby and household duties get too one-sided. Three tips can help from author Heidi Murkoff of What to Expect the First Year (Workman; 2009). Stay friendly when you: 1) Ask for what you need without assuming that your partner should know; 2) Talk about what you feel instead of pointing out what your partner is or is not doing (avoid criticism!); 3) Ask, “How can we help each other out here?” rather than insisting that everything be done your way. Your parenting life has just begun, and all along the way there will be rough patches. It’s a good time now — before life with kids gets thick with activity — to commit to good communication and a lot of understanding for what each other is going through.
