G

reat. Perfect. Wonderful. We can all welcome the news that a growing body of evidence says excessive sitting is linked with various health risks, low self-esteem and decreased academic achievement in school-aged kids. I mean, will the good news ever stop? A lot of us have been asking ourselves how much more we’re supposed to take in this already heavy-laden basket case of a year. Is it time to set up a disco ball in your living room? (Yes.) Create a multi-generational playlist you can wiggle to? (Yes.) Or, as my Mom used to say when she’d get annoyed with her five kids going wild in the house, “Go play on the freeway!” Physical fitness was already a struggle at school — remember all of those cuts when the Common Core was our biggest concern? No time for fun and games, kids, you’re going to read these here texts! The arts got hammered, too. Sing and dance? Ha! You’ve got to learn scientific equations and new math! Yet here we are in a pandemic with school starting and kids being forced to sit at computers even more than they already do. So what can we do? What will you do? Kids move a lot more outdoors than they do inside. A study from the National Institutes of Health covering the results of 6,500 kids in 12 nations confirms that. So you can do something that a lot of veteran homeschooling families have been doing for years: Twenty minutes of learning inside then 20 minutes of play outside — and not screentime play, physical play. Set up badminton, use chalk to make a hopscotch, ride bikes, blow bubbles and chase’em, give rewards for races. That kind of thing. There’s nothing more wonderful than a kid who has exerted himself to the point that he’s sweaty and red in the face. But if the idea of having to be your child’s fitness guru is overwhelming, there’s good news. All you really have to do is make sure 60 minutes of fitness happens a day. Yes, it’s recess for all! Turn to one of these online resources to help kids NOT be sedentary. Build movement into your kids’ lives daily. Hey ... maybe this can actually turn out to be a good thing! Vanderbilt Answers On COVID-19 & Back-to-School Wellness

A

s of this writing, some kids are going back to school physically and some are not. Some will be doing online learning at home while others will be dropped off at school. None of it is comfortable for anyone, and you have a lot of questions. Thankfully, Vanderbilt can keep you informed with good, solid answers to the many questions on your mind: When children go to school or daycare, how can parents protect them from COVID-19? Along with continuing to take everyday measures such as wearing masks and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, daycares and schools are implementing physical distancing in classrooms with space between desks and using small “family-like” groups of four- five people and allowing students to eat meals only with their small groups. When should children be suspected of having COVID-19? Children should be suspected of having COVID-19 if they have fever and cough or shortness of breath — OR — cough or shortness of breath and exposure to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days. How sick are most children who get COVID-19? Many infected children develop a mild disease. As of July 1, 2020, in Tennessee, only 39 of the 4,743 children with confirmed COVID-19 were reported to be hospitalized and accounted for only 1.4 percent of all reported COVID-19 hospitalizations. What if someone at my child’s school or daycare tests postive for COVID-19?* If your child spends more than 10 minutes in close proximity (within six feet of a person who tests positive), your school should tell the local health department about his exposure. Your child should then stay at home with limited contact to others for 14 days.

*Children who are medically complex, who have neurologic, genetic, metabolic conditions, or who have congenital heart disease are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 than other children.

12

Where can I get my child tested?

Your child can be tested at your pediatrician’s office or at one of the TN Department of Health’s free testing sites which are for all ages, regardless of symptoms. To find a center near you, visit tn.gov/health/ cedep/ncov/remote-assessment-sites. html.

There Are Many Things That Parents Can Do to Protect Children ... Talking Is Key

S

o very weary of hearing about cases of child sex abuse? Don’t be. Sexual abuse of children is an underreported crime mostly because children — the victims — hide from talking about it. But statistics show that at least one in 10 children in the United States will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. It’s a horrendous truth. The Committee for Children (CFC), a global nonprofit leader in research-based social-emotional learning programs — recently launched a public awareness campaign called “Hot Chocolate Talk” to help parents talk to children about sexual abuse prevention. “Parents are a key driver in preventing child sexual abuse,” says Dr. Tia Kim, vice president of education, research and impact at CFC. “When parents communicate early and often, they cre-

ate environments where kids feel comfortable asking questions and having difficult conversations, like disclosing abuse,” she adds. The Hot Chocolate Talk Conversation Guide helps take the guesswork out of knowing what to say and when to say it. “We know child sexual abuse can be a challenging subject to navigate,” says Kim. “A shared treat can help create a more comfortable atmosphere — we encourage families to sit down over a cup of hot chocolate and start the conversation today.” Find a downloadable guide and a variety of approachable, research-based resources, from guidance on how to respond to disclosure to identifying signs of abuse at hotchocolatetalk.org. Learn more about the Committe for Children at cfchildren.org.

A Very Important Step in Protecting Children: Emphasize Early That Your Child’s Body Belongs to Him According to the CFC, children need to understand that no one is allowed to touch or talk about their personal private parts outside of an appropriate setting such as a doctor’s office. It is important to begin communicating this concept to your children as early as 2 years old, experts say. You can begin simply, during bath time, saying something like, “Mommy is washing your neck and back and bottom. Your body is special and it is yours; no one is allowed to touch you because this is your body. If anyone does, you tell Mommy right away because my job is to keep you safe.” Learn about more ways you can protect your child at cfchildren.org/resources/child-abuse-prevention/.

WELLNESS

Covid-19 & Infants are Q: How babies affected by COVID-19?

A:

Newborns can become infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 during childbirth or by exposure to sick caregivers after delivery. Special care for newborns born to women with COVID-19 is needed. This may include temporarily separating the mother and newborn to decrease the risk of infecting the baby, monitoring the baby for signs of infection, and, if supplies are available, testing the newborn for COVID-19.

At Vanderbilt, in many cases, if a mom is COVID-19 positive but does not have a fever and can control her respiratory symptoms, she will be able to stay with her infant and even breastfeed.

The Different Degrees of COVID-19 and a Newborn

T

he many aspects of COVID-19 mean some people get symptoms, some do not. For an expecting mom who is positive for COVID, if symptoms are non-existent when her baby is delivered, the infant will likely be able to stay with her. “The Labor and Delivery unit and postpartum unit at Vanderbilt University Hospital have implemented a restricted visitation policy, subject to change as the situation evolves,” says Jennifer Thompson, M.D. an obstetrician in the division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Vanderbilt Uni-

18 august 2020

versity. “We allow one adult to be present at the birth of the baby and accompany mom to postpartum. This should be the same adult for the entirety of the hospital stay. In addition, one certified doula may be present in labor and delivery. Both the support person and certified doula are subject to screening,” she adds. And what about if the delivering mom is COVID positive? “If a mom is COVID-19 positive but does not have a fever and can control her respiratory symptoms, mom and baby can stay together,” Thompson says. “Mothers will need to wear a mask to reduce the risk of transmission to the infant, but we continue to encourage skin-to-skin contact and maternal bonding with their newborn,” she adds.

nashvilleparent.com

So is there a difference in post-partum care if Mom is positive for COVID at the time of the baby’s birth? “Depending on the circumstances, if a child is born to a mother who tests positive for COVID-19, the baby may be temporarily separated from the mother to reduce the risk of infection to the newborn. This will depend on the mother’s symptoms and severity of disease,” Thompson says. And breastfeeding will be encouraged. “Breastfeeding may be done by the mother while wearing a mask after performing appropriate hand-and-chest hygiene or can be done by a healthy caregiver if they desire. The infant will be monitored for any symptoms and will need to have appropriate follow up after discharge,” Thompson adds.

TikTok’s setting menu (click on “Me” in the lower right corner then the three dots at the top left corner) has a “Digital Wellbeing” section that allows parents — or the user — to enable Restricted Mode that “will limit the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for all ages.” To learn more about safety on TikTok, get an in-depth guide at connectsafely.org/TikTok.

Snapchat: Minimum age is 13. A messaging app that lets users exchange pictures and videos (called Snaps) that are meant to disappear after a chosen amount of seconds after they’re viewed. You should know that there are “Snapstreaks,” (when two users snap back and forth within a 24-hour period for three days in a row; “Snap Maps” that display your location in real time; “Snapchat Story” (a collection of moments in the form of pictures and videos that create a narrative). SAFETY: According to Common Sense Media, the biggest challenge for parents is that there’s no way for you to see your kids’ activity in the app. If you allow your child to have a Snapchat, sit down with him and scroll

Minimum age is 13. Of course you know of Instagram, but you may but not be on top of what you can do to keep your child safe. For instance, unless you change the default for your user to private, anyone can see what the user posts. On Instagram you can share privately, publicly, directly and via Instagram Stories. With Instagram Direct, you can share a photo privately to a group whether you follow them or they follow you. To make your child’s account private, tap the profile button and scroll down to Account Privacy and Private Account and move the slider to the right. The slider will turn blue once the account is private. The other aspect of Instagram you should know about is Instagram Direct (DM). While Instagram is a photo-sharing app, it’s actually a social media platform disguised as a photo app. Most of the talking done on Instagram is through DMs. The problem with DMs is the potential for predators to DM kids. Also prevalent with DM-ing is cyberbullying. SAFETY: Instagram has safety measures meant to better protect young users, but they are easy for kids to work around. For the best control, go to internetmatters.org/hub/ tags/instagram-safety/.

GROUND RULES • Think about what you’re OK with your kids doing online. • Discuss privacy with your kids. Be specific about what is and what is not acceptable to your family. Teach about the importance of keeping their information private. • To minimize the chance that your child will accidentally stumble across pornography, activate parental controls on all of your devices. Go to commonsensemedia.org for “A Parents’ Ultimate Guide to Parental Controls.”

finding a good tutor for your child

A lot of us aren’t “math people,” or even able to give our kids the attention they may need while learning at home. Enter the tutor.

F

orget the nightly homework struggle, learning at home now may entail all-day difficulties. Since the coronavirus made Zoom calls a fixture in our livingrooms, kids and parents are working harder than ever. Now, with school starting up, kids throughout Middle Tennessee will be put to the remote task of learning on their own regardless of learning differences.

Many parents feel the pinch that they don’t have the time (or ability) to help their kids when they need assistance. Enter the rise of the tutor. Some local tutoring services such as Mathnasium have already adjusted to meet the needs of kids. “Mathnasium ‘at Home’ has really helped our students beat the Covid 19 slide,” says Alex Guppy, director of Mathnasium of Brentwood. “It’s a fun, interactive tutoring program that allows sessions to be taught right in your home, and it is a perfect solu-

tion today for a successful home-based learning environment for your child,” Guppy adds. Tutoring provides an effective way to get kids back on track and keep them there. But how do you find a good, reliable tutor you can trust and one whom your child can successfully work with? And what if hiring a tutor isn’t in your budget?

TUTORS contact. He might be able to recommend a tutor in your community, a peer who can work with him or helpful online resources that can better help your child. Chances are, one of your child’s friends has a tutor. So, ask other parents for a recommendation. Another option is to search online for tutors in your area. You’ll likely find a couple of local tutoring companies and a collection of individual tutors you can vet. Companies often offer on-site tutoring, but during corona, many are offering virtual tutoring as well. There are also many websites developed for helping parents find tutors. Takelessons.com has a searchable database of tutors. Just enter your zip code and the school subject to find tutors in your area. This site also shows tutors’ ratings and fees per session. Another source is Care.com, which connects people with various service professionals, including tutors. Experience in tutoring varies widely, however. So, check their reviews and ask for references. Online tutoring is another popular choice, though, it isn’t right for every child. Also, do your research because the reviews of many online tutoring companies are fair to mediocre, at best. The costs of online tutoring aren’t always consistent with quality. FREE TUTORING If tutoring isn’t in your budget, there are several options. First, check with your child’s school. Many may offer after-school tutoring and can adjust to Skyping with your child. Find out how your child can work independently with an older peer or support teacher. If tutoring isn’t available through your kid’s school, ask trusted family members, neighbors, and friends if they can help. You might discover someone you know is enthused to help your struggling child. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TUTOR There are several factors to consider when looking for a tutor. For younger students, if the tutor has a teaching degree, specialization in a particular subject isn’t necessary. From high school and beyond, look for a tutor with expertise in the subject your child needs help with. Does the tutor have the right personality? First, a tutor should be patient, empathetic, positive, passionate, creative, and fun. These characteristics help ensure your child can learn from the tutor and will walk away with self-confidence. Also, the tutor’s personality should be a good fit for your child. It’s essential the tutor and your child connect with each other. Is the tutor flexible? Each child has their own best learning style. It might be visual, aural, physical, verbal, logical, or any combination of these. Also, some kids are solitary learners whereas others are social learners and enjoy learning in groups. Look for a setting and tutor that fits your child’s style. Does the tutor have excellent references? Online tutoring services often have reviews from previous clients. Look for those with overall high ratings and positive comments. But beware of reviews directly on the tutoring company’s website, since these can often be manipulated. If you find your tutor offline or find very few reviews, ask for several references. Still, the references a tutor provides might not be an entirely accurate depiction of their character and experience, either. Do due diligence for your child’s safety and to ensure your child receives quality help. Kimberly Blaker is a parent and freelance writer.

hat’s not only the name of a new Nashville Ballet production available online beginning August 18. It also dramatizes the number of steps climbed 100 years ago by women suffragettes at the Tennessee State Capitol to await news of a pivotal legislative vote. That vote by lawmakers in Nashville forever changed the face of American elections. Choreographed by Gina Patterson and commissioned by the League of Women Voters of Nashville, 72 Steps was inspired by the historic Tennessee vote that gave women across the nation the right to vote. On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th and final state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Certified eight days later by the Secretary of State, the vote was the last hurdle of getting approval by three-fourths of the nation’s states. Tennessee’s vote was filled with suspense, making the centennial ballet production all the more dramatic. The outcome hinged on a decision by a single legislator, Harry T. Burn of McMinn County, who changed his mind at the last minute to side with the suffrage movement. “It’s said that he was swayed by a letter from his mother convincing him to change

his vote,” says Patterson. The ballet explores themes of human rights, civic responsibility and the ongoing battle for a more equitable society through the lens of the women’s suffrage movement. “We said a lot in rehearsals, ‘Yes, 72 steps, but there’s maybe 72,000 more to go,’” Patterson says. “We take one step at a time; and small steps of progress are good,” she adds. The digital presentation aligns with and complements state curriculum for middle school history classes. Project co-chairs Cindee Gold and Debby Gould explain why they chose the medium of dance to mark the 100th anniversary. “For many of us as young girls, ballet was one of the few acceptable outlets we had to express our athleticism and creativity,” they explain. “Dancers are beautiful, but it is their strength that is crucial to their success, as so it is with all women.” For Patterson, it all comes back to inspiring the next generation. “I think it’s really important for young people especially to know that one vote can make a difference — and to not take for granted the right to vote because their voices really do matter.” The performance is free, thanks to generous sponsor support provided by the League of Women Voters of Nashville. THINGS TO DO SPECIAL!

Parents Passing the Puck Preds Moms Prepare for Playoffs BY MICHAEL W. ALDRICH

I

t took only 90 seconds into a phone interview with Julie Turris for one of her three children to start tugging at her pant leg. “Sorry, one second, one of them is crying,” she says with a laugh. “My 4 year old just got up from her nap, so it’s always a bit iffy at this time.” The wife of Nashville Predators forward Kyle Turris has been in Canada for one week, leaving her husband back home in Nashville to hit the ice again at training camp in preparation for the NHL’s 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifier games. “We just decided with Kyle getting back into training and then leaving for Edmonton, it’d be good to come back where we have

Julie Turris (right) and Ida Ekholm Bjornstad (left) pose at Bridgestone Arena. some family and more support if we’re going to be on our own for a bit,” she says. Along with 11 other Western Conference teams, the Preds reported to the NHL hub city of Edmonton on July 26, with their Qualifying Round series against the Arizona Coyotes slated to start Aug. 2. Turris, who moved to Nashville in November, 2017 when her husband was traded from the Ottawa Senators, admits that resuming hockey season is bittersweet because of the coronavirus pandemic. “The team ended on such a high note back in March when everything shut down, so it feels good to have a little bit of normalcy back,” she explains. “Obviously, there’s a bit of nervousness with it as well with everything

going on, and a bit of sadness too, going from being able to spend all this time together.” Ida Ekholm Björnstad, who alongside Julie Turris co-hosts the popular podcast “Off Ice with Ida & Julie,” had quite the memorable summer as well, but for other reasons. “We got married!” Björnstad says of her wedding to defenseman Mattias Ekholm. “Our ceremony was so little and so cozy. I missed having all my friends, of course. But at the same time, it was super special just doing it the two of us with some close family.” Björnstad and Ekholm, along with their 2-year-old son, William, got the last Scandinavian Airlines flight to their home country of Sweden once it became clear in late March that the pause to the 2019-20 NHL season

Mattias and Ida were married in June in front of the people closest to them rather than the bigger wedding they had originally planned. wouldn’t be brief. “When everything started, we had no idea what to expect,” she says. “It was so great to have him home and all of us together because, even when he’s home during the season, he’s not really home with all that he has to do.” Having both quality and quantity family time together was a rare and unexpected blessing for both women. “During the season, our schedules are so all over the place that we never get to sit down and have dinner together,” Turris says. “With him being home this past couple of months, we got to share a meal every night.” Though supportive of and hopeful about her husband’s upcoming Stanley Cup run, Björnstad — who had a long career in sports broadcasting in Sweden — can’t help but echo Turris’ mixed feelings about hockey’s return. “I love hockey and I firmly believe that Nashville needs it more than ever right now,” she says. “But I’m also a newlywed. I’m here in Sweden with my son and we miss him every second of every day. I wish that we could be together, but we can’t. And it’s weird not knowing how long it will take before we get to see him again.” At the end of the day, being on the road can take its toll. Babies don’t care if their dads have multimillion-dollar athletic contracts to fulfill. It’s a topic touched on in Björnstad and Turris’ podcast, which kicked off in 2019. “It takes a lot on the guys and it takes a lot on us, too,” Björnstad said.

And then there’s the podcast. “It was something I thought I’d never do,” Turris says. “Kyle and I are pretty private, but it’s been great to talk to these girls who have these incredible behindthe-scenes stories that rarely get heard.” The show — which has featured everyone from the wife of Preds’ Head Coach Kristen Laviolette to Austin Watson’s girlfriend Jenn Guardino — took a pause for the summer. However, Turris promises they’ll be back at the mic soon. “Ida’s still in Sweden with William and I’m here in Canada with my kids, but we definitely hope to do a couple episodes long distance now that playoffs are starting,” she says. There’s no doubt these two podcast hosts, wives and moms (not in that order) will miss being on the other side of the glass watching No. 14 and No. 8 in action. Until that day returns, they will have to cheer them on from home like other Preds’ fans. The first puck is scheduled to drop at 1 p.m. CT on Aug. 2 as Nashville and Arizona begin their best-of-five series to start Phase 4 of the NHL’s Return To Play plan. All of Nashville’s games will be played at Rogers Place in Edmonton. The full schedule for the series is as follows: Game 1: Aug. 2, 1 p.m. CT Game 2: Aug. 4, 1:30 p.m. CT Game 3: Aug. 5, 1:30 p.m. CT *Game 4: Aug. 7, TBD *Game 5: Aug. 9, TBD (*If Necessary)

Julie Turris and Ida Bjornstad interviewed Kristin Laviolette on the first episode of their podcast, Off Ice With Ida & Julie, which takes listeners behind the scenes of the Nashville Predators.

THINGS TO DO SPECIAL!

Arts Check-In 3 QuestionsWith ...

Q. What were you in the middle of when everything shut down?

At the time, we’d presented a hugely successful three-week debut of Hamilton in January. Plus, we had announced our 20-21 Broadway season and were receiving an incredible initial response from our Season Ticket Holders. We had new programming on our minds as well with plans to offer a family series of public shows from our annual Season for Young People this fall.

Q. How have you been adapting in the pandemic?

We have been able to move arts activities, engaging lessons for young people, even teacher trainings to online. With a little help from Broadway’s Will Blum we produced a virtual awards ceremony for our Nashville High School Musical Theater Awards program. Embracing an opportunity to engage patrons beyond our walls, we launched the TPAC Salon Series to provide fun, informative, and interactive virtual activities.

JENNIFER TURNER

President & CEO Tennessee Performing Arts Center

Q. What can families expect moving forward?

We are looking forward to our Broadway series “roaring back” in February with a multi-week run of The Lion King. Although our schedule is shifting, we are still working on presenting a family series that features public performances from our Season for Young People line-up.

Q. What were you in the middle of when everything shut down?

We had to cancel performances of the world premiere of Hans Christian Anderson for students. The Teddy Bear’s Picnic in The Snuggery was just two weeks into its run and had to stop as well. Pete The Cat had just loaded in the set, too. We also had to cancel Spring Break Camp in the building. Over 21,000 students were scheduled to see Pete The Cat this spring and public sales were on trend to make it the most attended show in our history. We had also just announced our 90th Birthday season. There was an amazing energy in the building. Then one day, we all had to leave.

Q. How have you been adapting in the pandemic?

The Drama School created entirely original virtual classes — it was amazing! Since The Drama School went online, we’ve served over 600 students in 14 states and Puerto Rico as well as Spain and Canada.

Q. What can families expect moving forward?

ERNIE NOLAN

As we start our 90th year, you can expect that NCT will be outside our building once again! Our plan is to be sure that the magic and artistry that is NCT reaches folks far and wide, beyond the walls of our theatre. We’re planning on online experiences that entertain and educate young people whether they are staying at home or are back at school.

Executive Artistic Director Nashville Children’s Theatre

Q. What were you in the middle of when everything shut down?

Three days before we closed to the public on March 16, we had just opened the exhibitions Mel Ziegler: Flag Exchange and Jitish Kallat: Return to Sender. Fortunately, we have been able to extend the presentation of all current exhibitions. At that moment in March, we were also busy planning for our 2021 exhibition and program schedule. Those efforts have only increased.

Q. How have you been adapting in the pandemic?

With the stay-at-home orders, we saw a dramatic increase in traffic to our website and social media channels, including a 980 percent increase in visitation to FristKids.org. We worked to move as many programs and resources as possible online through Zoom and produced video tours and interviews. We now offer a trilingual Storytime with the Frist reading and activity, which can be found on our site and YouTube page.

Q. What can families expect moving forward?

We have been delighted to see many families visiting us in our first weeks of reopening. Unfortunately, our beloved Martin ArtQuest Gallery is still closed at this time, but we look forward to its reopening when we can do so safely.

DR. SUSAN EDWARDS Executive Director & CEO Frist Art Museum

Q. What were you in the middle of when everything shut down?

Things were quite busy before the pandemic hit. We opted to close our building and halt rehearsals in mid-March; at that time, we were preparing for our annual Modern Masters production. Having to cancel that production in particular was a huge disappointment for our artists. It’s a series that I programmed specifically to challenge the dancers by presenting what you might consider some of ballet’s greatest hits. It was supposed to be the last time Kayla Rowser, Jon Upleger, Gerald Watson and Benjamin Wetzel would perform at TPAC before retiring and having that final bow ripped away must’ve been devastating.

Q. How have you been adapting in the pandemic?

COVID-19 has brought so many challenges to the performing arts industry, but the strength, flexibility and resiliency with which all of Nashville Ballet’s board members, staff, faculty, dancers and students have responded is truly inspiring. We moved all of our classes online, and eventually even transitioned to a virtual summer intensive, which was a tremendous undertaking for our school staff and faculty. We also launched a free digital performance series in the spring to make up for the cancellation of the spring portion of our 2019–2020 season. Q. What can families expect moving forward?

PAUL VASTERLING Artistic Director

Nashville Ballet If I’ve learned anything from the pandemic and this tumultuous time, it’s that we really can’t know what to expect and we have to be OK with that. Right now, our performances are set to start again in November. Our School plans to offer in-person and virtual class options during the fall semester beginning in September, and we hope to continue reaching others across Middle Tennessee with digital performances and other community engagement offerings.

Q. What were you in the middle of when everything shut down?

The museum was well into a run of consecutive record-breaking years at the beginning of 2020. Last year we topped a million visitors for a fifth straight year, with guests coming to see the museum, Historic RCA Studio B and Hatch Show Print. Last year’s 1,450 educational programs — including musical performances, topical discussions, interviews, collaborative family activities and much more — drew nearly 107,000 people.

Q. How have you been adapting in the pandemic?

When we closed the museum temporarily in March, we used this as an opportunity to enhance our existing online programming. For youth and families, we currently have three primary resources: live, interactive programs for children guided by museum educators that explore the museum’s exhibits and collection through art projects, songwriting instruction and instrument workshops. All of these resources can be found on the “Fun at Home” page of our website. Additionally, the museum hosts Songwriter Sessions every Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Q. What can families expect moving forward?

When we reopen, we will have policies in place to help ensure a safe environment. The guest experience will be different with in-person programming paused. No matter the changes, our commitment to sharLISA PURCELL Senior VP of Development, Education and Community ing and illuminating the country music story will not waiver.

Engagement , Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

Q. What were you in the middle of when everything shut down?

Twenty-twenty marks Cheekwood’s 60th year as a public institution and we had a full slate of celebratory garden openings scheduled, in addition to the return of Chihuly at Cheekwood for a 10th anniversary show ... and then the pandemic hit. With cases of COVID on the rise, Cheekwood closed first the Historic Mansion and Museum on March 13th and then the full garden on March 17th in the midst of our annual Cheekwood in Bloom.

Q. How have you been adapting to the pandemic?

Cheekwood first adapted by sharing our stunning gardens in a virtual campaign that centered around the words of Lady Bird Johnson, “Where flowers bloom, so does hope.” With the virtual campaign in full swing, behind the scenes Cheekwood was working in earnest with Chihuly Studios to reschedule the show and determine how its six-month run could work as part of our annual Holiday LIGHTS festival. We also immediately began the process of planning a “Welcome Back to Cheekwood” campaign when we could reopen. The amazing team at Cheekwood stepped up to the task of re-organizing for the Chihuly exhibition, four years in the planning; implementing extensive safety protocols and accelerating garden projects.

Q. What can families expect moving forward?

The Cheekwood estate has never looked more magnificent, especially with the spectacular works of Dale Chihuly gracing our gardens as well as our Museum galleries. The future is uncertain, but I want the community to know that a visit to Cheekwood promises to bring solace, joy and peace.
