Prevent the Slide The NWEA projects major academic impacts from Covid-19 school closures. Preliminary estimates suggest impacts may be larger in math than in reading and that students may return in fall 2020 with less than 50% of typical learning gains and, in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would expect in this subject in normal conditions. Our @home live tutoring bridges the gap between this school year and next while students focus on key topics such as fractions, multiplication, algebra readiness, and more. At Mathnasium, we are working hard to prevent learning loss and ensure that our students head into next school year confident and prepared. Keep your child from sliding backwards during this time. Schedule a free assessment today!

Introducing Mathnasium@Home – live, web-based tutoring!

With Mathnasium@Home you get the same instructors and Mathnasium Method™ as at our center, but online, in real time. Learning can happen anywhere there’s an internet connection. Your child attends regular sessions from the comfort of your home. It’s safe and secure, and there are no additional costs.

DAY BYDAY

City of Stars, You’re Shining for Us All

L

a La Land, and it’s another day of sun, or should I say, another day of a hotel room? It really wasn’t supposed to go this way, but as so few of us can grasp, we are NOT in control; we are here for the ride of our lives. It’s 6 a.m., and from my ninth-floor window, cars are zooming past on the 101 freeway and the pink-and-green shimmering lights are still aglow at Universal Studios Hollywood. Soon it will be another day of sun, but only Ryan Gosling knows if this is the start of something wonderful. For me, it’s the start of four more days of solitude. My fourth baby, my Thomas, is a quarter-finalist on America’s Got Talent. It’s no wonder that he sings, he sort of had to coming from our family; we all sing, loudly and a lot. We all think we’re good and some of us are, some of us not so much. I’m biased as Thomas’s mom, but I think he’s the greatest singer on Earth and also the most handsome guy ever to be born. How’s that for devotion? Parents, I know you get me. From my perch, the promise of the hazy, coral sunrise is the most beautiful view I’ll receive today from the San Fernando Valley. By noon it will be hazy with a layer of smog and a fusion from heat you can practically touch. My window here gets very warm. I am in isolation; something about testing positive for COVID-19 and being told, “No, no, don’t do this, don’t do that, go away and don’t come back tomorrow.” I am a lucky one, though — so far. It is Day Six of what will hopefully run as a problem-free 10-day course. I have a runny nose and just a smidge of headache. I have wracked my brain to pinpoint where I may have picked this up. Thomas is “negative,” thank God, but as his guardian, I have accompanied only him, social distanced, masked up. So did it enter my body in the ladies’ room? Or when I secretly pulled my mask down on the plane just to breathe a quick stream of cool air? Was it that man I recall sneezing in the lobby here at the hotel? The sky has changed from pink and orange to light yellow. People live in these marvelous structures all mashed together on the hillsides. People here are very serious about COVID, and coming from Nashville, I may have been a bit nonchalant about it all. God, do I miss the bucolic Tennessee. God, I am not blasé about this anymore. God, please help me get through this and help my boy stay safe and all of these good people out here and at home and, well, just everywhere, God. We are not meant to be alone. We are a people who need one another, and if I have learned anything from this, it’s that the sun is going to keep on rising whether I’m here or not. And also that many human beings are suffering much more than I am right now and the puzzle of the world cannot be figured out by anyone. We are in a giant mystery and we’re in it together. My boy is in his own room out of necessity. We Facetime, and I know I call him too much, but one can only watch so much “Chopped.” So be careful out there, everybody, and get yourselves good masks — these paper-thin ones just aren’t cutting it!

Nashville Parent’s Virtual Back-toSchool Fair Highlights Local Resources for Kids

Nashville Parent’s annual Back-toSchool Fair is kicking off this year using a virtual platform. In year’s past, the print, digital, social and event company has held its fair at a local venue, but in keeping with community wellness, organizers aimed to be extra cautious this fall. And even though this year’s fair is online, parents will still get the same kind of quality information they’ve received access to in the past. Of course, an added perk to being virtual means that all of the information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting now! Go online to Nashvilleparent.com/btsf20 to learn about all of the following programs from local vendors and more.

PARENT NEWS QUICK BITES • THE UNITED WAY is

Connecting Students with Song Through Nashville Opera Delivering arts when it’s desperately needed BY MICHAEL W. ALDRICH

T

hose who wish to sing always find a song. The Swedish proverb epitomizes how the Nashville Opera has responded since canceling its performances last spring due to the coronavirus. Virtual education tours and upscaled digital performances are keeping the music turned on. And on the horizon is an Opera on Wheels, created during the shutdown to debut next spring. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve been absolutely determined to find a way to continue to create opportunities in a safe, meaningful way,” says Lea Maitlen, engagement director for the 40-year-old organization. “I mean, without art, what are we?” she asks. The Opera’s education tour, which serves between 20,000 and 25,000 children and their families annually, was one of the first big challenges to tackle. “We thought to ourselves, ‘what can we do to still deliver arts-driven content to students, allow our emerging

14 september 2020

artists to hone their skills, and continue the creation of art at a time it’s so desperately needed?’” Maitlen recalls. As a result, the Children’s Opera Tour is going fully virtual, with an all-access digital education program around The Three Little Pigs. The Nashville Opera’s emerging artists are being filmed on stage for presentations that will debut this school year before elementary school students statewide. “Kids will be able to access this content wherever they are,” Maitlen says. “And then after viewing the film, they will get to participate in a live Zoom Q&A with the performers dressed in costume.” OPERA OUT LOUD; ONE VOTE ONE; and OPERA ON WHEELS This winter, another virtual program called Opera Out Loud will be offered to middle and high school kids and late this month, the company will present its first-ever digital opera, One Vote Won, to high school students across the state. Composed by Nash-

ville native Dave Ragland, the production celebrates the hard-won battle to make sure every citizen is able to exercise their right to vote. Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools was the first to sign on to share the One Vote Won study guide with every high school teacher across its district. All of this pandemic-inspired creativity will continue in 2021. In fact, it may be driving to a place near you. “We are currently working towards the goal of having a mobile stage connected to an SUV that we can take around the city, pop open, and give a performance outdoors,” Maitlen explains. Known as Opera on Wheels, the community engagement initiative will reach a range of audiences and launch in conjunction with Nashville Opera’s Rigoletto Noir (April 8-10) and Cinderella (June 11-12). For more information, visit NashvilleOpera.org or check out past archival performances on the Nashville Opera YouTube page.

Physicians call it “periodic breathing of the newborn”— and it’s completely normal. “They will almost pant for a period of time and then they will pause for several seconds — several seconds in baby breathing

If you’re ever concerned about strange movements that your baby makes, try to video record it, suggests Jennifer McBride, M.D., internal medicine and pediatric specialist. “Nine times out of 10, Baby won’t do the motion when in the office with us,” McBride says. “If parents record it, I can see what

McBride says.

Difficulty pooping. Your baby may appear to struggle when they go, but as long as their poop is soft and doesn’t look like pellets or rocks (a sign of

constipation), don’t worry. Babies can have dirty diapers anywhere from once a day to every few days. “Formula-fed babies don’t necessarily poop every day and sometimes that concerns parents, but the body doesn’t process formula as fast as it does breastmilk,” McBride explains. If your little one is passing watery diarrhea, contact your doctor as this can be a sign of an infection.

Non-stop crying It’s absolutely normal for babies to cry — a lot. What’s not normal is for your infant to cry nonstop. If your baby has inconsolable crying (colic), it may be gas, constipation or other digestive troubles that need to be checked out.

Breastfeeding Refusal

Jeepers, creepers… It may look weird, but babies sometimes sleep with their eyes half open or appear as if their eyes are rolling around in their head. “I don’t know that anyone knows why eyes roll around the head. It’s probably something to do with their sleep patterns. They don’t have well-organized R.E.M. sleep at that age,” Mellick says.

Sometimes babies can have a tough time learning to latch on for breastfeeding and you just have to keep on working at it. One physical issue that can prevent a baby from nursing properly is tongue or lip-tie which can be corrected by a procedure called a fenectomy. Some can be so severe that it leads to a speech delay. Be sure to check this out.

Vomiting

physician.

All babies spit up after eating, some quite a bit. What’s not normal is spitting up so often and so much that it’s actually vomiting. This can be caused by acid reflux or other stomach issues. Be sure to mention it to your pediatrician so you can get good guidance on how best to handle it.

Love of a Dog L

Although dogs take over easy chairs, shake up vacation plans and throw vaccuums into overdrive, new studies reveal that for young kids, they also help alleviate stress and provide ongoing emotional benefits.

oyalty. Companionship. Unconditional love. All qualities we seek from others, yet rarely find rolled into one, uncomplicated soul. Except that of the dog. Our human love affair with domestic canines dates back thousands of years. Dogs have worked for us, played with us, curled up by the fire with us, and truth be told, many people express they way thery feel about their dog on their bumper stickers: “My dog makes me happy; you not so much.” Or, “Who rescued who?” While cats run a close second to dogs as the favorite household pet and are in no way being demoted here, the dog’s status as

number one has something to do with how intently they pursue us, socialize with us and rely upon us for affection and presence. In this highly unusual pandemic era, many of us need pursuing, and not just those of us who are “dog people,” but kids who may be experiencing stress, anxiety and quite possibly too much isolation with all of the social distancing going on. Science now backs this up. According to a recent study from Pediatric Research, the official publication of the American Pediatric Society and the European Society for Pediatric Research, kids with dogs are about 30 percent less likely to have conduct problems, 40 percent less likely to have difficulty relating to peers and 34 percent more likely to show pro-

social behavior compared to kids without dogs. The study that collected data from 1,646 parents of 3- to 5-year-olds also highlighted that the social-emotional benefits of owning a dog begin early in childhood. There’s no question for dog lovers that when times are tough, their pet provides an enormous amount of emotional support to them. The use of Emotional Support Animals (ESA) have exploded in recent years for people with extreme anxiety and more, so if you’re at all concerned about a kid’s anxiousness or stress, you can bet that a pet of some kind — but most specifically a dog — can help smooth out the ups and downs in a day. According to animal therapy program professionals, simply petting an animal promotes the release of mood-elevating hormones. While it’s been shown that teens and young adults benefit from ESAs during difficult transitions in life, the news that young children benefit from a dog beginning at an early age is new. While service gos require extensive training, emotional support animals require no training at all. Finding Your Child a Furrever Friend It’s easy to fall in love with the idea of a pooch warming the foot of your kid’s bed, but actually bringing a dog home is a huge responsibility. Before you begin the search for a dog, do a little due diligence to make sure it’s a good decision for your family. You can also take a dog for a “test drive,” through Nashville Humane Association’s Doggie Dates and Rovernights programs. Doggie Dates let you take a shelter dog out for a few hours to hike or just to play in your yard. Rovernights allows you to host a dog in your home overnight. This makes for a great way to learn if a dog is a good fit for your family. Learn more about this at nashvillehumane.org/doggie-dates/. So if you’re thinking, “Maybe my boy will benefit from a dog,”

the answer is actually yes. It’s not cheap, the dog will become a very important part of your family and will even complicate your easy-going lifestyle, but research now shows that kids with dogs benefit emotionally, developmentally and socially. Susan Day is editor of this publication, a mom of four and the happy owner of two fur babies, Bella and Theo.

Nashville Humane Association’s Doggie Date program lets you borrow a dog for a few hours to go on a hike or simply play at home together.

SHARING of Middle Tennessee is a 501 (3)c non-profit organization that supports parents who have lost a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or early infant death.

President Reagan proclaimed it in 1988 and said, “When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower. When parents lose their child, there isn’t a word to describe them.”

PARENTING

BY SARAH LYONS

want to motivate your kid? STOP YELLING.

We all lose it sometimes, but with kids, repeatedly yelling at them is useless and harmful. There’s a better way!

E

very parent yells at their kids once in awhile, but when yelling becomes your go-to method of communicating your expectations, it can end up leading to negative results. A child who is yelled at frequently will start to tune out what is being said and will begin to use yelling as a way to express themselves also. What is the best way to motivate kids without yelling? Here are some ideas:

SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS

To avoid yelling at your kids, establish clear rules and expectations and make sure your kids understand what those are. “Remain consistent in applying the consequences so that it is known that rules have value, says Kara Thomas, a mom and preschool teacher. For example, if school mornings are difficult, set rules that help everyone in the family can follow to make things run more smoothly. Create a routine so your kids know what to expect and what needs to

be done next. Set rules such as: everyone needs to be dressed, done eating, and have shoes on and bags packed before playtime or using electronics in the morning. A natural consequence for not following this rule is loss of electronics for a day following the event. A similar routine can be set for bedtime. Let your kids know what behaviors are not acceptable in the home (hitting, fighting, being disrespectful) and what the consequences are for breaking a family rule. When a rule is broken or a morning isn’t going smoothly, (please turn the page)

STOP YELLING! the kids will not be surprised by the consequences because they have been discussed calmly in advance. There will be no need to yell because once a rule is broken, the consequence is put into place and the day goes on.

GIVE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that someone who receives negative feedback will start to feel bad about themselves while a person who receives positive feedback, understanding, and encouragement will have more self-confidence and a better attitude overall. Take the opportunity to encourage and give as much positive reinforcement as possible when dealing with kids. “If you are trying to find the balance, the two positives to every behavior correction can be a good model to try and follow.” says Thomas. When the time comes for correction, try to give advice or ask for things in a positive and calm way. This will likely have better results than yelling.

GIVE A WARNING

There are times when simply giving your child a warning can save us from an argument later. Calmly saying “We are leaving the park in 5 minutes.” or “Please stop screaming or you will have a time out.” gives your child a chance to prepare themselves and make a choice of how to respond. When the time comes to leave the park or give a time out, follow through on your warning. If you give multiple chances or end up staying at the park another 20 minutes, your child will not take your warnings seriously in the future and you may find yourself frustrated and yelling once again. “Consistency is key in your children knowing that the rules have meaning and consistent consequences for breaking them.” says Thomas.

ASK FOR HELP

One way to avoid yelling is to ask your child to help you solve the problem you are faced with. If you are expecting company and the house is a mess, you could yell at the kids to clean up their rooms or you could present the situation as a problem that you need help solving. “Our friends are coming over in 30 minutes and there are toys all over the floor. What should we do?” You may find that when it is presented this way your child will come up with the solution that you were wanting in the first place, they will pick up their toys and you won’t even need to yell at them. If they don’t come up with the solution that you were looking for, make sure to tell them what you need from them and give them clear guidelines on what you expect to happen.

EXAMINE YOURSELF

If you have noticed that you yell at your children more than you would like to, think about what is causing this. Are you rushed? Frustrated? Do you need a break? Sometimes we don’t realize how often we are yelling. Consider asking a co-parent or friend to be an accountability partner and let you know when you need to cool down and approach the situation differently. If your children are older, you can also ask them for help in changing your behavior by allowing them to point out when you are BE UNDERSTANDING yelling. In advance, come up As parents, we often forget with some ideas of what you that our kids are just that can try instead of yelling - if kids. There behavior is not your child will not put on their going to be perfect or rational shoes, ask them to race to all the time. They may have see who can do it faster. If A 2014 study in The Journal of Child Development showed that yelling produces something going on that they you feel the urge to yell, walk anxiety, stress, depression and behavior problems in kids. haven’t shared with you, they into a room where your child may be overtired, or they may can’t hear you and mutter out whatever you wanted to yell. This be frustrated or worried. All of these things can cause them to act should allow you to return the situation more calmly and direct your out or forget to do what is expected of them. Try to be understandchild in a more positive way. Let your child know in advance what ing, validate their feelings, and listen to what they have going on the consequences of bad behavior will be and warn your child what at school or with friends and siblings. Simply talking about their will happen. If the behavior occurs, follow through with the consefeelings and strengthening your relationship with them will help quence you set without yelling. motivate them to listen and obey you in the future. “Congo” Masai Giraffe

Nashville Zoo currently has 85 Zoo Keepers caring for 357 species and 2,901 specimens. Let us introduce you to a few:

Melina Kommavongsa Hospital Keeper

“Charlotte” Red-Tailed Boa

“My favorite thing is the variety. As a hospital keeper I get to work with everything from toads to tigers and everything in between. On top of that, I also get to assist with the medical procedures going on with all of the animals, so that’s even more variety. One day it might be a surgery on a snake, and the next day it’s getting to do exams and vaccines on all of the kangaroos.” — Melinda Kommavongsa Hospital Keeper

*photos by Quentin Thompson

“Many people just think we play with animals all day. However, our job consists of long shifts and working on weekends and holidays. We all spend countless hours cleaning, making enrichment, preparing diets, maintaining exhibits and enclosures, and talking to the public. It’s not a glamorous job, but we all work so hard to keep our animals safe, healthy and happy.” — Alison Day, Ambassador Animal Keeper

Nikole Edmunds Hoofstock Keeper

“Linus” Bongo

Jake Belair Ambassador Animal Keeper

THINGS TO DO SPECIAL!

Marissa Verdi Carnivore Keeper

Lauren Lott Contact Area Keeper

Hilary Shaner Primate Keeper

“Bandit” Alpaca

Josh Wiseman Outreach Specialist

“This is more of a lifestyle than a job. No one ever made it rich being a zoo keeper. We work on holidays, like Christmas, away from family. We work when it’s hot, cold and in extreme weather. When the roads are iced over the animals still need to be taken care of. As difficult as our days can be with healthy animals or sick animals, baby animals or aging animals, we love our job!”

“It’s more than just cleaning poop. We all have college degrees and need to be well educated about these animals to provide proper care. We all have the conservation of these animals in our minds and are trying to do something tangible to help. Whether it’s field work, breeding and release, raising funds or education, it is all part of our job.”

THINGS TO DO SPECIAL!

Big Ideas from Local Theaters BY MICHAEL W. ALDRICH

Artists love nothing more than a challenge that inspires them to innovate.

P

layhouses are closed for what normally would be the kickoff of theater season, but local acting companies are still finding innovative ways to lift the curtain across Middle Tennessee. From virtual musicals to online education programs and small group produc-

tions, theaters are keeping the arts going and connecting with their audiences in new ways. The pivot is no surprise to Cori Laemmel, artistic director of The Theater Bug, a Nashville-based company for young people. “Theater has been around since the dawn of civilization. It’s survived through pandemics and wars,” Laemmel says. “There’s no part of me that thinks art and theater isn’t going to survive this as well.”

46 september 2020

THE THEATER BUG Soon after Nashville came under a saferat-home order last March, The Theater Bug (thetheaterbug. org), sprang into action by writing and producing Quaranteened: A

nashvilleparent.com

Virtual Musical. “We ended up with a cast of 25 kids and they adapted so well to being in community on screen,” Laemmel recalls. “It was great because they got to work on their acting chops while getting a crash course in technology by self-taping their scenes and recording their own vocals.” The soundtrack will be released in coming months and the musical has been accepted into two film festivals. But Laemmel’s not sitting and waiting. “We’re in the middle of filming a web series called Stories, an original musical told through the lens of young people’s Instagram stories,” Laemmel says. Episodes will premiere through the Stories’ Instagram page and will be linked to The Theater Bug’s Vimeo for download. Other Middle Tennessee theater groups are adapting and creating, too. NASHVILLE REPERTORY THEATRE It was painful to postpone its summer musical, Mary Poppins, and The Rep (nashvillerep.org) is busy planning a virtual fall season. “We’ll be offering several new online plays from our Ingram New Works Project, as well as profession-

Theater Bug’s production team sets up a shot for Stories. Photo by Abbey Rhyne al development seminars for actors with local and national instructors,” says Executive Director Drew Ogle. The Rep is also investing in master classes such as a new program based on the monologues of August Wilson, and additional theater instruction at the Johnson Alternative Learning Center. The company has also changed its annual Broadway Brunch into an online nighttime gala and auction, and is hosting a weekly online gathering of costume designers and other fashion artists called “On Pins and Needles.” STUDIO TENN THEATRE COMPANY The Franklin-based professional group has embraced this unusual theater season with flair. Its web series, Studio Tenn Talks: Conversations with Patrick Cassidy, features top-flight professional guests from Tony Award-winning singer and actress Kelli O’Hara to Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander. Studio Tenn (studiotenn.com) recently hosted a Virtual Musical Variety Show and an outdoor, socially distanced performance by Tony Award-winner Adam Pascal

(original cast of Rent on Broadway) at Academy Park Performing Arts Center. But the company’s new, virtual education program — covering masterclasses, homeschooling programs and private lessons — makes the company really proud. “The arts are so important — now more than ever — and kids should not miss out simply because school looks different this year,” says Casey Hebbel, education coordinator. “Studio Tenn Education is excited to offer custom curriculum with personalized lesson plans, teaching artist visits and arts integration,” she adds. All ages can enjoy free, instructional videos on studiotenn.com including a makeup tutorial, a ballet workshop and Interpreting a Song. ACT TOO PLAYERS This Franklin-based youth theater organization offers classes, camps and productions and has adjusted to theis new era by training students in six- to 12-week sessions in-person and online, with limited enrollment caps in lieu of CDC guidelines. “I have found strength in all the

nashvilleparent.com

innovation I’ve witnessed in arts education over the past months,” says Sondra Morton, director for Act Too Players (acttooplayers. com). “I have seen solutions and interesting ways to teach theater that have just left me feeling awed. I am excited to see what innovative theater experiences are created out of such chaos and necessity,” she adds. One thing Morton has observed in her young students is resiliency. “I have always been impressed with their ability to accept things and to go with the flow,” she says. “Naturally, many students miss the live aspect of rehearsals and performances, while others are excited for the online format and to have their performances posted on YouTube. We’ve found that students want to learn and are willing to do whatever is needed to do that.” BRAVO CREATIVE ARTS CENTER Cent While creativity hasn’t just stopped, it’s required plenty of adjustments to meet the needs of parents and children. “Parents still want opportunity for their kids to meet with peers to connect and create in a trusted environment,” says Lissa McHugh, executive director of the Bravo Creative Arts Center (bravocreativeartscenter.com). The Franklin-based nonprofit worked in small groups over the summer (with safety measures in place) to serve more than 60 community kids with tap, musical theater, dance and improv. More than half of those involved worked on Honk Jr., a production they performed last month before a masked and socially distanced audience at Jamison Hall at The Factory of Franklin. “The production may not have had all the bells and whistles that audiences have come to expect with a Bravo production,” McHugh explains, “but there were some very happy kids excited to continue to use their gifts and bring joy to others!”
