DAY BYDAY Parents Make or Break a Bridge
O
ne of the themes in life that always perplexes me is how time passes so quickly when you’re not paying attention, and so slowly when you are. Another theme that strikes me is not knowing how good you have it when you do. It’s not until we’re grown up that we are able to look back and see more clearly the people who raised us and the life we shared. Of course, when you are raising kids, you sometimes wonder if your children will ever appreciate all that you do for them (they will, just not right away) and will they actually ever know who you truly are (one day they will desire to know more). So this month, I’m looking way back with thanks, especially because my father joined my mother in heaven this past June, and I’ve only recently begun to know life without a parent here. I believe I will see them again, but I want to say, “Thank you” now. I have raised four kids — I am still raising them — so I know the roll-up-my-sleeves job that raising children is. I also know that in the time that I’ve been a parent, culture has shifted dramatically from when I was a little. I’ve tried to be a mom like my mom was: not a worrier; a woman filled with good humor and fun; a songstress given to outbursts of melodies; and someone who sees the good in life first and forgives easily. What tremendous gifts she gave me. I have also tried to be like my father: an introspective and intelligent man who was also deeply kind and sensitive — and given to outbursts of song. A lifelong writer who taught me with great care how to look at the world from all sides and perspectives. While Mom was a conservative, Dad was a liberal. I was the middle of five, so with this, my growing up was woven with diplomacy. But my parents didn’t drag us through their ideologies; we were sheltered from adult issues during our childhood, and I am very thankful for that. And family dinners at 6:30 p.m. when Dad got home from work. Mom cooked for seven every night, rotating macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, pork chops, spaghetti, salisbury steak, lasagna. Our dinner table was a boisterous spot where we were encouraged to speak loudly and express ourselves freely. The biggest gift I received is that my parents did not judge us. We were not scolded; mistakes were lessons. We were never put down, rejected or made fun of. I know I was a mostly happy kid, because I remember running through the dining room once and stopping to hug myself before carrying on. I know now that my luck of the draw was to have been Ellie and Larry’s girl. Before my father died, he surprised the five of us by telling us we were his best friends — and my Dad had a lot of friends. We were my parents’ kids growing up — not their friends; that distinction matters when you’re raising kids — but as adults, it became reality. My parents made friendship with us inevitable by accepting us as we were and enjoying us as we grew. We came to a place where we could discuss ANYTHING. So very thankful for my parent’ true love, openness and devotion.

PARENT NEWS Shop For Kids In Need WITH CHRISTMAS4KIDS
F
or two nights in December, hundreds flock to Hendersonville’s Walmart for the annual Christmas4Kids event. Faces of hundreds of children light up as they peruse the toy aisles and, though this year will be a little different, organizers recently announced the event is a go. “Our community has rallied behind us to provide Christmas for 400 elementary school kids,” the organization says. Shoppers will be assigned a child and his list to shop Dec. 7 or 8 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Each child will receive a $150 shopping spree from a personal assigned shopper — instead of shopping in person with a child as in years past. After gifts are bagged and labeled, shoppers will deliver gifts to a warehouse in Hendersonville. Childrens gifts will be separated into schools and delivered to children December 15.
The Christmas tradition— started in 1982 — continues this year.

ot ungrateful kids, or just hoping to start them off right when it comes to appreciating the big or little things in life? Much has been circulated lately about entitlement or priviledge, but the truth is, we’re all priviledged just to be here with opportunities and gifts all around us. With Thanksgiving upon us, it’s an excellent time to check in on your kids’ attitude about how much there is to be grateful for whether it’s heat coming through your vents on a cold morning, a provided meal at school or a sunny, crisp afternoon and a pile of leaves for the leaping. One thing is certain: complaining about what we don’t have doesn’t get us anywhere and showing off what we do have is a similar dead-end street. How can you make sure your kids will grow up grateful for all that you provide for them? For the roof over their head and a family — or anyone — who cares about them? Kids learn through modeling and repetition and gratitude is no exception. The more your children see or hear you showing thanks, the more seeds you plant in their hearts. However, sometimes we ALL fail to appreciate our good fortunes. We whine about everything from our world problems to the gravy actually touching the potatoes on our plates. It’s good to take pause to observe our own interactions in the world and those of our children. To make sure that we’re not unappreciative, spoiled jerks, but rather human beings intent on living — and sharing — a good life. In Making Grateful Kids: The Science of Building Character (Templeton Press; 2015), authors Jeffrey J. Froh and Giacomo Bono note that young children first practice thankfulness as politeness, rather than genuine gratitude, which comes when they are old enough to appreciate why others are offering them kindness. Saying, “please” and, “thank you” creates building blocks of gratitude for kids as they are learning to be in the world. If your kids are a bit older though — and you’ve had a moment or two of wondering if they “get it” or not — take a few days to observe your interactions and theirs. How often are you all expressing appreciation?
Here are a few ways to instill gratitude in your family:
Roses and Thorns
Sometimes called simply “Highs and Lows,” this is a practice of each participant sharing one positive thing and one negative thing that happened during the day. Consider offering roses last to end on a positive note, or up your gratitude game by taking time as a family to consider what good may have come from the “thorns.” Don’t forget to express thanks for the people with whom you can share these highs and lows.
Five Pennies, Beads or Pebbles
Have your child think of five things he is grateful for and allow each small treasure to represent one of those things. Keep them in a special spot or precious container, or take them to school in a pocket as a reminder throughout the day.
they’d hoped. These types of downward comparisons encourage empathy. With that empathy, comes greater appreciation for the things we have. Kids also begin to see that everyone has a different perspective, and that their circumstances could spark envy in others.
Basket of Thanks
Keep a basket or other container in a prominent place in your home, along with index cards and pens or colored pencils. Encourage family members to write quick notes of thanks for people, pets and things in your home throughout the day.
Thank You Cards
Writing thank you notes cultivates thoughtfulness and gratitude, and can become a regular habit. Author and mom Sage Cohen writes and sends thank you cards daily. “My son is very aware of my gratitude practice,” Cohen says. “In my household, writing thank you notes is like brushing your teeth, going to bed on time, and being Downward Social Comparisons gentle with the cats. It’s both modeled and Rather than lamenting how others have required, but in a friendly and integrated it better than you do, Froh and Bono sugway. To make sure that we’re not unappreciative, spoiled jerks, but rather human beings intent on living — and sharing — a good life.
Gratitude Journal
Help your children keep a daily list of people and things for which they are grateful. Spending time to write or draw things we appreciate focuses our attention on them in a way that can magnify their value. Entries can be a simple drawing or more detailed written entries such as “I am thankful for …because …” As a parent, in any season, you can plant seeds of appreciation and watch gratitude grow in your life, and in the lives of your children. PARENTING
Toddlers, First Words, and Possible Issues You can hardly make out what your toddler says, but it’s adorable. When should you worry that it’s not?
BY SUSAN SWINDELL DAY
“C
an you say, “diaper?,” a mom may ask her little one, carefully enunciating with her face directly in front of his. The toddler tries and emits a soft “eyepoh” which is just oh-so precious ... and normal.
Gobbledegook pronunciations are absolutely typical for toddlers on the cusp of speech and language development, simply because it’s not easy to pronounce certain sounds, and rather than try, try again they simply swap sounds. Those words that require a lot of tongue movement are especially tricky — flower is “fowah,” and words with a hard “k” sound that require movement with the tongue in the back of the throat are especially complicated, so “truck” may be “truh” and “clean” may be “queen.” It’s all a part of early childhood development. Typical 2-year-olds will say about 50 words and speak in two-and three-word sentences; by age 3 they’ll have about 1,000 words and increase their sentence structure to three-and four-word sentences. If your child isn’t on target with that, it’s not time to worry — he (please turn the page)

TODDLERS may be a late bloomer. Children learn to talk at different times, says the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) website, and it’s hard to know when your child will get to each stage. Still it’s hard not to compare your little one to others his age who may be more advanced in their speech and language development. According to ASHA, your child’s speech and language development depends on his natural ability to learn language; other skills that he is learning at the same time; how much talking he hears during the day; and how people respond to what he says or does.
Home Life Typical toddlers are either at home each day with a parent or caregiver, or in a childcare setting during the week where a hubbub of communication swirls around them, demanding their participation. At home, the aware mom or dad works hard to instill good habits in their toddlers, but little ones still see their parents spending an exorbinant amount of time on laptops and phones and they want to do what’s modeled to them. We are all swamped by technology now, much to the detriment of a child on the unknown quest for language development. The American Academy of Pediatrics warning us not to allow too much tech for our kids falls on deaf ears. The iPad is the consummate babysitter,

LANGUAGE BOOSTING “Play fosters language in young children. Provide your child with open-ended play materials including blocks, dolls, boxes and art and craft materials. Sensory play experiences can be provided through containers filled with water/beans/rice or with homemade playdough.” — Denise Anne Bryant, speech-language pathologist, Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center
and the idea that children ages 2 - 5 should only take in one hour a day of high-quality programming is a farce in the face of household realities. But suddenly ... if you’re concerned about your child’s speech or language delay, you need to be more mindful of his time with a device. “It is now more important to be intentional about engaging your child in technology-free activities,” says Denise Anne Bryant, M.A., a speech-language pathologist with Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center in Nashville. If your child is between 18 and 30 months and not talking the way you think he should, where should you turn? Off the bat, you can check the ASHA website, Bryant says. “The ASHA website
has charts with speechlanguage milestones for children birth - 5 years of age,” Bryant suggests. “Every child develops at their own rate, so the charts are guidelines,” Bryant adds. And if your child is not matching up the way you instinctually think he should, it’s time to make a pediatric appointment. But know that ASHA distinguishes between speech and language. Speech includes a child’s articulation, how they produce sounds and fluency. Language includes a child’s vocabulary, their ability to combine words and their ability to use words for different communication purposes (to request, protest, seek attention). Also know that your child’s hearing ability is key. “It’s important to remember that your

child’s speech-language development is depedent on your child’s ability to hear,” Bryant says. Following birth, your child’s hearing is tested, but hearing loss is possible as a child grows, so your pediatrician should always be checking at well visits.
Should You See a Speech-Language Pathologist? So you took your child to the pediatrician and she referred you to a speech-language pathologist. It feels “heavy,” but it’s not. If your child has an actual delay, related to speech, language, social communication, cognitivecommunication or a swallowing disorder, it’s important to get him intervention early for the best outcome. Bryant says that with young children,
the speech-language pathologist will work closely with you to teach you to support your child’s communication development. You will learn to provide a communication-rich environment for your child that includes talking at your child’s level so he can understand, responding with interest to what your child tells you and adding language to an interaction to help your child express himself.
Play With Your Child To offset the possibility of a speech- language delay in your baby, one of the best things you can do is to up your play time and chatter at home. “Play fosters language in children,” Bryant says. “Provide your child with open-ended play materials including blocks, dolls, boxes and art and craft materials. Sensory play experiences can be provided through containers filled with water, beans, rice or with homemade playdough,” she adds. And take your play one step further, Bryant suggests. “Movement activities during play boosts children’s attention spans and facilitates verbal, visual and kinesthetic learning,” she says. Of course, reading daily to young children, starting in infancy, helps with language acquisition and more. It’s always a good time to pick up a book to read together or simply to read aloud. Susan Day is editor of this magazine and mom to four great kids.

Documentaries Every Kid and Parent Should See
W
Netflix’s The Social Dilemma Is a Must-Watch
hen’s the last time your child looked at his phone? Does he ever lie on the couch with the intention of relaxing for a few minutes, phone in hand, only to spend hours mindlessly scrolling through apps like Reddit, Instagram and Twitter? Yep, same here. And while it seems social media has been woven into the fabric of our everyday lives in 2020, the new Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma shows how harmful spending endless hours on social media can be — particularly when it comes to children. Essentially, in the docu, a group of tech experts come together to discuss surveillance capitalism and the science behind technology addiction. Per the film, what started as a harmless way to stay connected with friends has turned into a dangerous tool of manipulation — and most users aren’t even aware of it. As former Google design ethicist and cofounder of the Center For Humane Technology Tristan Harris explains in the documentary, “Social media isn’t a tool that’s just waiting to be used. It has its own goals, and it has its own means of pursuing them.” Whoa. The worst part? After a while, social media starts to manipulate what you like. It tells you what to check out, on purpose, because it’s how all these platforms make money. They sell your data to the highest bidders. Staying off favorite apps is easier said than done, but parents know the importance of practicing what we preach. Moms and dads who want to reevaluate their family’s relationship with social media should consider the following takeaways:
COMPARISON TRAP Certainly one of the most disturbing elements of The Social Dilemma is just how negatively a child’s self-worth is affected when they’re regularly checking in on social media and comparing themselves to their peers. According to the documentary, because of social media, self-harming has trippled and suicide rates have risen by 150 percent among children. “These technology products were not designed by child psycholo-

gists who are trying to protect and nurture children,” Harris continues. He goes on to note how social media can negatively impact children’s mental health. “It’s not just that it’s controlling where they spend their attention,” he explains. “Social media starts to dig deeper and deeper down into the brain stem and take over kids’ sense of self-worth and identity,” he adds. NO SUCH THING AS PRIVACY While the concept of internet privacy is worrisome for most adults, The Social Dilemma delicately points out that it’s especially problematic for teens. Because Gen Z is the first generation that took to social media in middle school, they’re used to coming home from school and spending hour after hour on devices. Experts confirm throughout the documentary that social media users don’t have any privacy whatsoever in terms of what they search or what videos and photos they interact with on their feeds. And while that’s scary enough as an adult, it’s particularly disturbing when you think about your kids. “The classic saying is, ‘If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product,’” as Harris explains.
1.
HAVE ONGOING CONVERSATIONS While it’s probably impossible to delete all of our social media accounts or ask our kids to delete theirs, it’s best to reexamine our family’s relationship with social media. In the documentary, some of the executives talk about how none of them let their kids access social media. But if that’s simply too difficult, watching this movie is a good start. Gaining awareness of the dangers that are lurking on the interweb (and most importantly, talking to our kids about them) will help us take control over our social media usage. Parents concerned about their kids’ search safety should also consider using Qwant (a search engine that doesn’t store your search history) rather than Google. And for families whose children aren’t old enough to have their own cell phones yet, consider holding off as long as possible. To stream the documentary, view it exclusively on Netflix.

2. Born To Be Wild (2011), Ages 5+ Narrated by Morgan Freeman, Born to be Wild is a brief (40-minute) nature documentary about conservationists who adopt and raise displaced orangutans and elephants in Borneo and Kenya, respectively, preparing the animals for re-entry into their natural habitats. The stories are compelling, teaching valuable lessons about environmentalism and empathy, and the animals themselves are wondrous. Available on: Amazon Prime, Hulu. Further viewing: For a look at these majestic animals in their natural environments, Planet Earth, available on YouTube and Amazon Prime, remains the best (and most widely available) nature-based docu-series on the market.
3. Kindness is Contagious (2015), Ages 8+ Kindness Is Contagious is an engaging, feel-good documentary that compiles research, statistics and anecdotes about the effect of good deeds, featuring the author of the book-turned-film Pay it Forward, Catherine Ryan Hyde. Studies are woven throughout snippets from interview subjects from all walks of life, who recount the nicest thing anyone did for them, while various experts weigh in on why being nice pays off. Available on: Amazon Prime, Apple TV Further Viewing: For kids 8+, Imba Means Sing, available on Amazon Prime, is an uplifting documentary that follows 20 young members of the African Children’s Choir on an 18-month tour of the United States, Canada and the U.K.
4. Paper Clips (2004), Ages 9+ Paper Clips is a powerful documentary to the testament of the scale of the Holocaust. In Tennessee in 2004, school officials ask students to collect millions of paper clips to represent every single Jewish person who died in concentration camps, which they then put in a rail car. The documentary is moving and a good introduction to the Holocaust for children. Available on: Vudu, iTunes Further viewing: For kids 12+, Bully, available on Vudu and Amazon Prime, is another socially-justice minded documentary that addresses the corrosive effects of bullying.
5. I Am Eleven (2011), Ages 10+ Similarly aged kids will love this documentary showing children around the world sharing their thoughts on the things that affect them and the things that don’t yet. From a kid in an Indian orphanage to one living in Melbourne to another in Thailand, kids can peek at worlds that don’t look like theirs — and learn how others their age are feeling and thinking. Available on: iTunes Further viewing: Babies, available on Hulu, is the version of this film about babies.
