Trusted care and treatment matters. Camille and her Mom know. Nothing prepares children or their families for a cancer diagnosis but having the right team in place to share the journey and help fight the disease makes all the difference. The pediatric cancer program at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is one of only two in Tennessee that is part of a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. We provide complete pediatric cancer care under one roof with a depth of expert specialists that include oncologists, neuro and pediatric surgeons, psychologists, educators, and a team of other healthcare professionals. Here, children such as Camille, who is now in remission, have the best opportunity for care, hope and a cure. Read more about Camille’s story on Instagram. @vumcchildren

3 Things I’ve Learned My First 3 Years As a Dad

M

y son turns 3 next month. My wife and I will have succeeded in keeping our baby alive for 1,095 days. This is a big win — especially considering that we killed every plant we’ve ever owned, occasionally forgot to feed our dogs and spent a large portion of our time talking about decisions made by fictional characters from television. In celebration of this miraculous life our son has lived in spite of his parents being little more than children themselves, I’d like to share some things I have learned as a new dad. In no particular order … It’s not all about me. OK. This first one might be obvious, but it wasn’t to me when I became a new dad. It wasn’t like I brought my child home from the hospital with a brand-new outlook on life, immediately knowing that my old way of doing life was over. Before having a child, I could sleep in on Saturdays, watch whatever shows I wanted, leave the house whenever I wanted and use the bathroom in peace. Once I became a parent, any expectation that I could live the same way I did before withered away pretty quickly. I had to change my perspective and realize that there were other breathing human depending on me. If I could change my perspective to find enjoyment in helping other people, I could find joy in waking up early on Saturdays, watching “Baby Einstein” videos and always having company to enjoy the show when I use the bathroom. Enjoy the present. This isn’t just hippy-talk. At every stage of my child’s life — crawling, walking, eating solid food — I thought to myself, “I can’t wait until he can” or, “When he’s old enough, he’ll be able to.” My mind was constantly set on the future and what we’ll be able to do together when he got older. I was so focused on surviving my current season of life, or getting my child prepared for his next milestone, I would forget to just “be.” A huge life lesson from this dad to you is that you don’t realize how fast those first few years go by. Seriously, enjoy the now. Empathy solves many problems. All good people have one characteristic in common: they show empathy. They are able to put themselves in the shoes of another person so that they can understand the world through different eyes. When you’re in the thick of learning how to be a dad, you can make the difficult seasons better by showing empathy toward your child and partner. Patience, papa. If you can figure this out, you’ll enjoy being a dad a LOT more. Trust me.

QUESTION: “Gulp. Tubes tied or vasectomy? How do you make that decision together?”

YOU HAVE YOUR KIDS. NOW WHAT. “Easy. Took one for the team. She had two hard labors and we decided we had already made two perfect children. Vasectomy was way less invasive than going in and tying her tubes; she had been through enough giving me my two angels. It was a nobrainer. I do recommend taking the three days off though; hard labor after a vasectomy don’t mix!” Steven Terrell “Vasectomy is by far less risky, an easier recovery and hardly any down time. You do not have to be put under complete anesthesia and can walk out and drive home right after.” Rachel Carmichael “The hormonal changes are terrible for some women. My sister had to get her procedure reversed; other women do just fine. Talk to your doctor.” Marg Whead

“She carried your child/children. She birthed your child/children. She breastfed your child/children. Be a responsible man and let your reproductive organs experience a minute fraction of the trauma her’s have gone through in hopes they don’t ever have to again.” Mark Hancock “Do both. That’s making the decision together.” Chuck Grimes “It’s a discussion that’s particular to each couple. My husband is sensitive to needles. They don’t bother me that much. After we had our surprise third (which was a C-section) the doctor just went ahead and tied my tubes while he was there delivering my baby.”

“My husband ended up getting the vasectomy. After I had our third, I was going to have to wait a couple months to get mine done because I had complications on my delivery. My doctor said it was much easier and cheaper for my husband to get it done and my husband agreed. My husband had no problems afterward and was back to work three days later.” Laken Everson Partee “My husband watched me give birth naturally ... he said a vasectomy was the least he could do.” Trish Childers Steckenrider “Easy decision for us because we had a planned C-section. So while they were in there ...” Jessica Laughlin

Kelly Peterson “Do you love your wife? Vasectomy. It’s reversible and not an invasive procedure.”

“Remember vasectomy sometimes only lasts five to 10 years.”

Maghan Bryant “A tubal can cause many troubles. Go for a vasectomy.” Dee Dee Sanders

Jenny Whorton Meeks Butch Knotwell

12 november 2021

“My husband said from the very beginning of our relationship that he wanted four kids. I was still deciding if I wanted to draw the line at three, but God made up my mind for me and gave us our last sweet baby girl. We knew we were complete after her. I was willing to get my tubes tied if I was going to have to have a c-section anyway, but I had a natural birth. I just reasoned with my husband and told him I had birthed four children, breastfed for almost a consecutive seven years between them, taken pretty much all of the night time feedings, gained 50+ lbs., and can no longer laugh hard or sneeze without peeing a little. So, I think I’ve done my part. He agreed. He had his procedure on a Friday and was back to work Monday. He said it wasn’t a big deal at all.”

O

ne great way to help children experience the joys of giving is to visit the Giving Machines located at Bridgestone Arena Plaza at 501 Broadway. Plenty of families will be downtown during the holidays for special events, and the Giving Machine will be in place from November 18 through December 31 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, so be sure to stop by and check it out. Imagine swiping your credit card at the Giving Machine, but instead of purchasing candy or chips, you are able to buy a goat for a thirdworld country. Or bunk beds for children who sleep on the floor. Or a full holiday meal for a struggling family. When you use the Giving Machine, your transaction is represented by a symbolic card that drops into a donation bin at the bottom of the machine. One hundred percent of the funds go directly to local charities to pay for your selected item. Since the launch of the Giving Machines (located in various cities around the country), hundred of thousands of people have donated more than $9.1 million to charities. The local and global charities that will benefit this season include: Able Youth (leads children with physical disabilities to become independent); One Generation Away (distributes food to Middle Tennessee and surrounding states); Sleep in Heavenly Peace (builds bunkbeds for children who otherwise sleep on the floor); UNICEF (saves chidren’s lives in more than 190 countries); and others. PARENTING

BY SARAH LYONS

Parenting a Special Needs Child and a Typical Sibling Researchers have discovered that typical children consider their disabled sibling a brother or sister first; the disability comes second. But parenting different types of kids requires a little — and often a lot — of extra effort

H

ow do you deal with stares at the mall? Or explain to a friend who comes over to play why your sister is in a wheelchair? What is it like to have a brother who is autistic? Having a sibling with special needs is a unique experience that provides both challenges and benefits. While there is no doubt that typical kids love their sibling with special needs, the feelings that can arise during child-

18 november 2021

hood are often complicated. The love, appreciation and compassion they feel towards their sibling can be mixed up with jealousy, worry, resentment, fear, responsibility and anger. Parents who are in tune to their children’s feelings can help them work through the negative emotions and turn these challenges into benefits.

CHALLENGE: Insensitivity of others Unfortunately, kids with special needs are often the target of teasing. Kids, or even adults, that don’t understand other people’s differences may make insensitive comments,

nashvilleparent.com

ask inappropriate questions or just make fun of someone who is different from them. Siblings of special needs kids may feel the need to constantly stand up for their sibling, explain their situation to others or may be the brunt of teasing themselves. “One of the biggest challenges in growing up with my sister was watching her get laughed at,” says Justin Lyons, brother of Kara, who has cerebral palsy. Parents can help their kids work through this challenge by equipping them with the right answers for those awkward questions and teach them how to handle bullying in an appropriate way.

BENEFIT: Development of dependability, l oyalty and compassion After years of watching someone they love get teased, siblings of special needs kids will naturally develop a strong sense of loyalty to those they care about as well as a strong compassion towards others. Even though watching Kara get teased was hard for Justin, he notes, “I think it made me less likely to laugh at or tease other people.” Kids who grow up in a home with a special needs sibling typically become dependable and compassionate adults.

CHALLENGE:

Jealousy Parents do their best to treat their children fairly and spend equal amounts of time caring for each child. When you have a child with developmental delays or significant medical needs that balance can become extremely difficult to achieve and jealousy can develop. Kids may feel they get less attention or that their parents spend more time caring for the sibling. When these feelings develop, it is very common for kids to feel guilty that they have these thoughts, causing them to be more upset and resentful. As a parent, try to be understanding and patient about your child’s jealous feelings. Talking it through and having someone listen and take them seriously will help your child feel loved and included. If possible and appropriate, welcome your child to join you in caring for the sibling, but don’t push the issue.

BENEFIT:

Self control, thoughtfulness First, it is important to remember that sibling rivalry and feelings of jealousy are normal in any sibling relationship. As your child learns to wait for their parent to be free to help them, they will learn patience and self control. They will also learn to put other’s needs before their own.

CHALLENGE:

Worry and fear When children are around a sibling with serious medical challenges, lowered immunity, or special needs, kids may feel worried or afraid about the health of their sibling. They may not be able to express their feelings the same way that an adult would. Kids may act out, become overly emotional, or appear aloof to what is going on around them. Parents can help kids by being honest about health concerns in an age appropriate way. By including your child in this discussion, you can reduce their fear of the unknown and reassure them as well.

BENEFIT:

Develop compassion and empathy for others Kids who are exposed to someone with medical and developmental challenges naturally become more compassionate and empathetic to those who may have their own struggles. “I attribute my sense of understanding and compassion to group up with my sister.” says Michelle Hupp, sister to Felicia, an adult with Down Syndrome.

CHALLENGE:

Complicated and mixed feelings Kids have a variety of feelings related to their sibling with special needs. Some kids may feel pressure to “live up” to their parents’ expectations for themselves and for the sibling that may never reach certain milestones. Kids may also feel resentment, anger, frustration or like they are “missing out” on activities or experiences because their sibling’s care puts restrictions on certain activities. “Siblings often feel guilty about any negative feeling such as jealousy,” says Hupp. “The rewards more than outweigh the negatives, but sometimes the negatives are hard to talk about.” If you feel that these feelings are becoming a problem, consider seeking professional help to support your child’s development in a healthy way and encourage an appropriate relationship between your children.

BENEFIT:

A variety of positive characteristics develop While all of these challenges are realistic, kids also develop a wide variety of wonderful characteristics from their experience such as kindness, patience, compassion, acceptance of differences, helpfulness and empathy. . Being a sibling of a special needs person is a unique and sometimes challenging experience, but most people will tell you they have benefitted from the experience. As a parent, it helps to think of the long-term benefits and help your child shape their challenges into successes.

TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT DISABILITIES

“W

hy do you talk like that?” I heard the question come from behind me as I helped a child in the Sunday school class. “It’s just the way I am,” I heard my sister-in-law answer the curious boy. My sister-in-law, Kara, was born with Cerebral Palsy. She was helping me in the classroom that day; Kara has been taught to answer, “It’s just the way I am” after years of questions about her differences. There came a time when each of my kids asked about Kara’s disability. Chances are, at some point, your child will meet someone at school or in the community that has disabilities. It is normal for children to have questions about people who are different, which means you should be prepared to answer in an appropriate way. My tips: Everyone is different but the same All of us have unique gifts, personalities and challenges. All people, including people with disabilities, want to have friends, be shown respect, and have the desire to be accepted. Different disabilities Explain in simple terms that some people struggle with different things and may need extra help from a physical tool (like a wheelchair) or help from others. People can have impairments with sight, hearing, walking, speech, cognitive, or a variety of other things. Also note that just because someone is in a wheelchair, it does not mean they have a cognitive disability. Name calling is never OK Emphasize that people with disabilities have feelings, too. Name calling is hurtful, disrespectful, and is a form of bullying. People with disabilities need others to stand up for them when they cannot stand up for themselves. Encourage your child to tell an adult if kids are teasing another child. Why is that boy in a wheelchair?” and other questions kids can ask outloud. Simply answer, “He needs it to move around. Why don’t you say hello?” It is always better to treat others as you would like to be treated than to hurry away in an embarrassing situation. Later, you can ask your child if he has any other questions about others with disabilities and reinforce the value of treating everyone equally. Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer and mom of six. She has had more than 1,200 articles published in more than 150 publications nationwide.

excited, not nervous

parenting By Susan Day

Help for Childhood Anxiety

On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics declared the state of mental health for children and adolescents to be a “national emergency.” You need real tools to pull your kids out of the mire and back into engaged, unfearful lives.

M

aybe the tipping point of the decline in kids’ mental health can be traced back to the beginning of active shooter drills at schools. Others might say giving our toddlers tech devices instead of our

undivided attention did them no favors. Or letting kids have free reign on TikTok. Then again, maybe it was the quarantineremote-or-virtual onslaught that took over our lives that can pinpoint the mess. Or maybe it’s because some parents let their kids watch such cataclysmic Netflix shows as “Squid Game.” Whatever the reasons for the decline in kids’ mental health, it’s all recipe for worry. Yet while stressed-out adults are nothing new, stressed-out kids are a modern day phenomenon. Kids are supposed to be happy. Childhood is supposed to be wonderful. Whatever on Earth have we adults done to have our children caught in this murky place full of uncertainty and fear and what can we do to pull them back from the brink? Call it what you like: anxiety, fear,

stress; it all means the same thing: the kids aren’t alright, and mental health experts still aren’t quite sure what’s driving it — or how to solve it. Meanwhile, well-intentioned parents and teachers are dealing with kids who melt down regularly without clear guidance on how to handle it — and we all know that empathy alone is not enough. We’ve come a long way from authoritative do-as-I-say buckup parenting to “throwing rose petals in front of your child as he walks,” one father expressed recently, but parenting shifts alone can’t be blamed for the breakdown in child psyches alive and well today. Signs of Emotional Struggle in Kids Childhood is wonderful for some, nightmarish for others. Childhood can be rife with bullying, learning difficulties, topsy turvy and often violent home situations and more. Can it be that it’s all become too much? The straight-up answer is yes. National data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that there was a 24 percent increase in the proportion of mental health emergency department visits for kids ages 5 - 11 last year compared to 2019. As a direct result (please turn the page)

parenting of the continuing increase, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends mental health screenings for all children ages 12 and older during well-child visits, but it’s become standard practice to screen children younger than that. Signs that your child may be struggling depends upon their age. “Among little ones, parents may see an increased tearfulness about going to preschool or day care, clingy behavior or regression in milestones like potty training,” says Elizabeth Reichert, Ph.D., a pediatric and adolescent psychologist. With school-aged kids, Reichert says, you may see a resistance to going to school, oppositional behavior and somatic complaints such as stomache aches or headaches. “That’s going to be really tricky to navigate,” Reichert says, because parents want to believe their kids, but head and stomaches don’t cause fevers — and fever is the line for most school attendance rules.” Teens will display withdrawn behavior, such as staying in their rooms or more irritability and moodiness, Reichert says. Again, very tricky to manage since that’s also normal behavior for teenagers. The key is to compare the behavior of your child now to what they may have been like before. “If there’s a major change from a child’s or teen’s baseline behavior that doesn’t dissipate after a couple of weeks — such as a teenager who is withdrawing more and more and refusing to engage in typical activities, or a child who is progressively more distressed — that is a red flag,” Reichert says. Helping a Distressed Child One of the big questions surrounding the well-being of kids of course, is what’s happening at home. More and more connection is being made between anxious, over-stressed kids and the parents raising them who may be passing on their own anxieties and fears. Short of blaming moms and dads — who have their own heaping share of life difficulties to contend with — finding the way toward living healthy, normal lives is important. If anxiety and fear is dominating your mind, there’s a good chance that your child is impacted by that. “Parents are the biggest models for their kids,” Reichert says. “If your kids see you really anxious about something, they’re going to feed off that, so you need to be mindful of your own emotions so you can self-regulate and become present for your child,” she adds. “Kids are brilliant emotional detectives of their parents,” says Abigail Gewirtz, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and the author of When the World Feels Like a Scary Place: Essential Conversations for Anxious Parents and Worried Kids (Workman; 2020). “If you are showing your anxiety, it can leach out into interactions with your children, she adds. And while adults can seek counsel from friends, family, books, clergy and perhaps even with therapy, children turn to parents to show them the way ... or not. Reichert says parents often jump very quickly into trying to “fix”their kids with immediate solutions, but that’s not actually the best first step in helping an ovewhelmed child. “The first step is to listen and to create space to hear your kid’s concerns,” Reichert says. “Acknowledge what your child is feeling even if you don’t agree with it. The child should feel that they’re being heard; that it is OK to feel what they are feeling, and that they have space to talk to Mom or Dad,” she adds. Once you have a better sense of what’s going on, try to work collaboratively with your child to figure out a plan: What does your child feel like he’s capable of doing? What can you do to help? Who else can help — a friend, sibling, another family member? If, for example, your child refuses to go to school, you can ask, “How can we make it feel easier?” while also communicating to your child that, ultimately, it’s their job to go to school. By creating small opportunities for getting through

22 november 2021

DO SOME EMOTION COACHING: A two-step process you can use if your child is stressed to help calm an emotional storm.

1) Validate the Emotion: “I understand you might feel worried (and then explain the emotion), i.e., because you have a big test coming up; or, because Grandma is sick ...” This conveys to your child that their feelings make sense and that you understand. Do this with your child with any big emotion. 2) Provide support: Comfort, reassurance, hopefulness and possibly redirection, problem-solving and encouragement. Source: Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child by John Gottman, Ph.D. (Simon and Schuster; 1998).

difficult situations and coping with their worries, children can build the confidence and the independence they need to feel more in control and less afraid. For parents, Reichert says, it’s essential to find moments for selfcare. Taking even just a couple of deep breaths in the moment, taking a bathroom break, getting a drink of water or doing other things that create a brief transition for yourself, a moment to regulate your feelings, is helpful. Think back to what worked for you before the pandemic, and try getting even a small inkling of that back, such as five minutes a day of moving your body if exercise helps you. This is not only important for you as a parent, but it also shows your child that you have strategies to take care of yourself and you can share them with your kids. Literally invite your children into healthy coping activities with you. You can say to your school-aged child, “I’m feeling pretty stressed about this, and for me, going for a walk helps me clear my head. Do you want to go for a walk with me?” Parents and young kids can blow bubbles together — small kids enjoy it, and you can talk about how big breaths for bubbles helps everyone feel better. Turning Negatives to Positives And one more thing: The words we use and the switch up needed from negative to positive. Nervousness and excitement, for instance, are both aroused emotions. In both, the heart beats faster, cortisol surges and the body prepares for action. The only difference is that excitement is a positive emotion‚ focused on all the ways something could go well while nervousness is a negative emotion, focused on what can go wrong. It can be helpful for parents to turn negatives to positives for their kids, Reichert says. Afterall, the way we verbalize and think about our feelings helps to construct the way we actually feel. “Children, especially younger ones, understand the world through the bubble of the family,” Gewirtz says. What we know, though, is that parents can really help their children to cope with stress by emotion coaching and nurturing them along.” Susan Day is editor of this publication and a mom of four.

A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS LIVE ON STAGE Dec. 16 - 22 Tennessee Performing Arts Center 505 Deaderick Street, Nashville tpac.org

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale and written by Executive Director Ernie Nolan, this contemporary retelling shows that exhibiting kindness and creativity can be as life changing as a pair of well-made shoes. Ages 4 and older.

This quick-change, cross-dressing version of the Charles Dickens classic is set in a Victorian music hall. After a case of food poisoning, three surviving actors soldier on through a performance of A Christmas Carol. The trio gamely face missed cues, ill-fitting costumes and solving the problem of having no one to play Tiny Tim.

A CHRISTMAS STORY Dec. 2 - 19 Nashville Repertory Theatre 505 Deaderick Street, Nashville nashvillerep.org

The time: 1940. The place: Hohman, Indiana. Bespectacled Ralphie has an active imagination and one wish for Christmas -- a Red Ryder BB Gun. Constant reprimands of “You’ll shoot your eye out,” a grouchy department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the obstacles that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas dream.

Experience this Music City holiday tradition and rediscover characters like Clara, Drosselmeyer, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Madam Bonbon and more. With choreography by Paul Vasterling, dreamy costumes and glittering sets, Nashville’s Nutcracker is a treat for families during the holidays.

Join Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the whole Peanuts gang as they produce their own Christmas play and ultimately learn the true meaning of the season. Adapted from Charles M. Schulz’s timeless story, the production features the music of Vince Guaraldi, as well as a concert of beloved holiday carols performed by the characters.

ELF THE MUSICAL Dec. 3 - 19 Center for the Arts 110 W. College Street, Murfreesboro

The tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to New York then back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth.
