DAY BY DAY The Cratchit Solution
I
it’s been that kind of year. We all started saying, “What is it about 2020?” back in March, and here we are in December, eager to kick it firmly out the door once and for all. We are looking forward to everything getting better; to a vaccine arriving, to a coming around again to better times and healthier days. Twenty-twenty happened to us ... what will 2021 bring? Many of us lost loved ones and suffered ordeals this year. Because of this, we are different now. More aware. More resilient. More humble. And many are struggling this year financially and will continue to struggle. People say we’re going to have to learn to do more with less, and perhaps that’s true. At Christmas time — when it’s always about more and more — it’s not a bad idea to ponder how people who don’t have a lot can sometimes be the happiest people of all. Could it be it’s not about the having? Charles Dickens wrote about a very poor family in A Christmas Carol — the Cratchits. Not only were they in need with eight mouths to feed, but the youngest, Tiny Tim, was limp and prone to illness. Still he was happy; they all were. “They were not a handsome family,” Dickens wrote. “They were not well dressed; their shoes were far from being water-proof; their clothes were scanty; and Peter might have known, and very likely did, the inside of a pawnbroker’s. But they were happy, grateful, pleased with one another, and contented with the time.” That secret ... contented with time ... can give us all pause. Many, many of us have so much that we take for granted. We get irritated so easily, angry with each other (politics), short-tempered ... it’s embarrassing how awful we as a people can be to ourselves and to each other. Going forward into 2021, with our schools trying hard to remain open, with so many children home and with parents working hard to meet all of the needs around them, let’s step back. Let’s take a note from the Cratchits, a faith-filled loving family who didn’t let life lick’em. Let’s seek out contentment with what we DO have. Let’s continue to hunker down with our families and friends — the ones we love and the ones who love us — and be thankful. And grateful. And kind. And considerate. And all of the best parts of ourselves that we were created to be. And kick the ungraceful, vulgar parts of ourselves out the door with 2020. Let’s start anew. We all deserve the chance to start again. With a little help, Scrooge got to. We all can, too.

ife Promotions, host of the popular annual Christian music festival called Lifest in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is holding its first Nashville-area annual event at Hideaway Farm, July 29 - 31, 2021. Tickets for Lifest Music City are available now. This family-friendly festival will take place in Bon Aqua, Tennessee, approximately 45 minutes outside of Nashville proper. This will be the Farm’s first ever music festival and it will benefit Dignity Revolution (a movement supporting mental health and wellness) to Educate and Empower Youth to Stand Up for the Value of Every Person. “We are very excited to host this experience in Middle Tennessee,” says Bob Lenz, founder and visionary of Life Promotions. “Lifest is a party with a purpose, and that purpose is to join others in the gospel and
unite with the body of Christ through music,” he adds. Festival Director, John Dougherty, says Lifest in Oshkosh Wisconsin draws thousands of families each year. “Lifest has been held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin since 1999 and has brought national Christian musical acts including Newsboys, for KING & COUNTRY, TobyMac and many others. It’s a highly anticipated event for thousands of families throughout the Midwest every year, and we’re thrilled to expand its reach to the Nashville area.” Camping is available for the duration of the festival, as well as food vendors, marketplace shops, and activities for children. PARENT NEWS New Drive-through Lights Experience at NASHVILLE FAIRGROUNDS SPEEDWAY
E
amotion, an immersive sensory experience production company, presents “Jingle Beat,” a new and safe outdoor holiday sound-and-light experience taking place December 4 - 31 at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville. Visitors can experience the season by driving through large scale, multi-sensory installations that dance rhythmically to a remix of holiday classics. The Nashville Predators are a partner with Eamotion and Gallagher Staging. The family-friendly event features timed-entry, zero-contact ticketing and oneticket admission for all passengers in a single vehicle. A two-mile, fixed outdoor course features lasers, a 50-foot pyramid with cascading images created from more than 2000 video panels and 400-foot wide projection mapped surfaces. “Our goal was to re-imagine a holiday light experience to create an unforgettable, immersive journey that captures the energy and spectacle of a major live production,” says Erik Anderson, CEO of Eamotion. With the loss of so much live entertainment during the pandemic, Jingle Beat presents an opportunity for many in the local production industry to get back to work, including music, lighting, video, and special effects pros. The Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway is located at 625 Smith Ave. Tickets for Jingle Beat range from $45 - $60 per vehicle and are available at eamotion.com/jinglebeat.

Baby’s First NOEL
All of the “firsts” that come with a new baby are a delight for new parents, but this year especially, it’s important to keep everything super low-key.

BY SUSAN DAY
O
ne year, my firstborn arrived on December 17 — it’s a Christmas I’ll never forget. Not only did I have family coming from out of town, but I struggled with breastfeeding and with trying to make everything perfect at home. Thinking back, I was an exhausted wreck on Christmas. My tips here can help you to enjoy the Christmas season with a baby of any age. It’s a special time when there’s a baby in the house — aim to keep it that way. Stay Mindful and Calm This is the first and most important tip for holidays with a baby. It’s about YOU and your family. You are learning to experience a holiday together. Make it peaceful. Don’t fuss about dishes, cleaning and baking. Prioritize Baby’s needs and your own and take it easy. Really. Christmas Gifts Keep it simple, keep it simple, keep it simple. Babies require very little. One or two ageappropriate new items is plenty, and when it’s time for opening presents, do it slowly, at Baby’s pace. The money you save on not over-spending on toys can go to essentials you’ll need as Baby gets bigger: clothes for as he grows, diapers, formula — essentials. Decorations If your baby is reaching and crawling, beware of low-hanging lights and ornaments on your
Christmas tree and other decor. Keep Baby in mind with all of your holiday decorating so that you trim it back; keep special breakable keepsakes in storage this year. Visitors As COVID-19 cases rise, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends families celebrate by gathering with members of their own households rather than traveling to visit extended family members. Celebrating the holidays with a baby during a global pandemic is different, but embracing that difference can make it good. It’s also important to keep your baby safe during his first year because although rare, children under age 1 appear to be at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 than older children, says the CDC. This is likely due to their immature immune systems and smaller airways, which make them more likely to develop breathing issues with respiratory virus infections. If you or someone in your family has COVID19 or are waiting for test results due to symptoms, wear a cloth face mask and have clean hands when caring for your newborn. Keep Expectations in Check Christmas, and the holiday season in general, is about memories. Learning to embrace them all, good or bad, will help you to enjoy this time. You’ll soon realize that as your child gets older there’ll be more than one holiday memory
which is far from perfect. Sickness, tantrums, arguments, chaos, and tears often feature into holiday occasions when there are older children around, and no one is immune. Over time you’ll look back on these memories and realize they are just part of life. Sometimes they even become an amusing family anecdote. If things get too crazy, don’t hesitate to whisk your baby away into a quieter part of the house and shut the door for just the two of you. Take Pictures, Shoot Video Opportunities for photos and film will present themselves when you least expect them, so be ready with your phone or video camera at-the-ready. Read to Baby by the Tree When Baby is content, take him near your tree and read to him. Let him look around and see the tree, feel the moment. This sensorial experience of closeness with you and the warmth of your tree will mesmerize him. Gently Dance Put on Christmas music and gently sway with your little one and sing. He will love this and so will you! Christmas with a baby is a sweet and remarkable time. Take measures to keep it that way, and develop strong bonding at home, too. Susan Day is editor of this publication and mom to four great kids.

Parent Tips if You Have a Newborn • Focus on Peace You are the one with the baby — so when it comes to decorating, get-togethers, shopping, events and outings — you call the shots. Hang a simple wreath on your door and forgo the lights if that’s all you can manage. It’s OK this year. In general, if you feel you don’t want to do something, don’t. If you want family to come to you rather than you having to pack up and go to them, say so. • Rules at the Ready Limit relatives for safety sake and for those who do come, be ready with directives. Ask family and friends to call before arriving and to clarify that everyone is healthy. Insist that all healthy people who wish to hold your newborn wash their hands first. • Feeding Your Infant Newborns feed often during their first weeks of life, practically around the clock. Knowing this, give yourself grace to stay close to your infant and avoid holiday distractions at home. • Keep Your Newborn Home It’s best to avoid bringing your infant to any store or public gathering during the pandemic. • Ask for Help If You Need It Having a newborn is exhausting because of lack of sleep and the constant need to be “on call.” Make sure you stay in touch with family and friends who can support you. And if you need help, ask for it. • Baby Guide Nashville Parent’s Baby Guide is available online. The guide contains a section called “Baby World” which is filled with helpful resources. Access it at Nashvilleparent. com by scrolling down to link up with the Digital Edition. • New-Parent Videos For new and expecting parents, videos from Nashville Parent’s most recent Baby Fair are available at Nashville Parent’s YouTube page: https://bit. ly/2IWR4LQ featuring experts from Vanderbilt Health, Baby and Company and many more.

re you all caught up in the hustle and bustle of your online shopping? Maybe it’s time to look around and refocus to make a little Christmas magic at home for the kids. Here’s how: Advent Calendar Kids want to check the days off until Christmas. All kinds of calendars are available, even if you’re new to this, go ahead and get one and pop it up in the kitchen. Let your kids be the ones to do it every morning, rotating turns. It’s never too late to start a countdown to Christmas!

Lights Inside, etc. This is the year to pull out the stops with the decorating. And with kids in the house, let them help! Go to town with stringing lights up and down your staircase, on your mantel and more. Let the kids use their imaginations to decorate their rooms, too. Display holiday kids’ books Start a Christmas book collection that you keep in a basket year after year and do nightly readings. See a Christmas parade Turn to page 39.
See Santa. Virtual Santas opts are on page 24. Live opts on page 38. Track Santa with NORAD The government agency North American Aerospace Defense Command has tracked Santa’s progress across the globe for children for more than 50 years. Find the official site at noradsanta.org and watch video progress of Santa’s flight starting on Christmas Eve. Leave a Magic Santa Key The magic key lets Santa in the front door if you don’t have a fireplace.

Sprinkle reindeer food in the yard on Christmas Eve Find a recipe and free printable tag to make reindeer food here. Let the kids bake and decorate cookies for Santa Kids especially love Christmas cut-out cookies and leaving them out for Santa on Christmas Eve. Wrap Santa gifts in special paper & write tags out in squiggly handwriting Kids love seeing the heap from Santa and his funny penmanship!
Family Party Games Get your crew together after dinner each night and enjoy partying together! CHRISTMAS WRAP UP With each person using only one hand, have everyone try to wrap a Christmas present. Time teams for a fun competition. HUMAN CHRISTMAS TREE Split your family into teams, with one person from each team as the designated human Christmas tree. Dress that person up like a Christmas tree and judge everyone’s creations at the end. STOCKING FILL UP This is very similar to the traditional game of egg and spoon. Instead of an egg, use wrapped candy on a spoon and try to fill up a stocking! ELF TOSS Have duos stand across from each other and toss a toy elf. If it’s caught, have them take a step back. Continue until the elf is dropped and only one team remains.
CHRISTMAS 20 QUESTIONS Try to figure out who each person’s character is with this holiday themed version of 20 questions. LEFT/RIGHT Have everyone stand in a circle with a present. One person stands in the middle and reads a simple story that mentions the words “left” or “right” several times. Everytime they read a directional word, presents are passed in that direction. At the end of the story, everyone opens the present they’re holding. SANTA LIMBO This non traditional limbo game features a pillow under the shirt of each contestant to make it even harder and more festive.
SECRET SANTA Twist this by having each person in your family present assigned to buy or make a gift for someone else in the group. Do Secret Santa on Christmas Eve at the table!
CLIFFHANGER Using all holiday cards you received, place them on one end of a flat table. Try to blow them to the edge without them falling off. The team with the most cards on the edge wins.
SARAN WRAP Wrap a series of small prizes within a giant ball of saran wrap. Have each person try to roll doubles with dice. If they do, it’s their turn to try and unwrap the saran ball and get the prizes inside until the next person rolls doubles.
PAIR O’ CAROLERS Have each player pick a carol out of a hat, with two of each song in the hat. Then have everyone hum their song and try to find their match. When they do, they then have to sing the song aloud together for the rest of the party. If they finish the song, they get a prize.
BLINDFOLD CHRISTMAS Blindfold each person and have them try to draw Christmas imagery such as a Christmas tree, stocking, presents, and more. The winner can either have the most realistic drawing, or the most creative representation.
FAMILY FEUD CHRISTMAS Play a game of family feud themed entirely on Christmas.

THINGS TO DO SPECIAL!
BY MICHAEL W. ALDRICH
Local Actor Portrays All Roles in One-Man A Christmas Carol Free access to this holiday gift is from Tennessee Performing Arts Center
O
ne man. One stage. Six cameras. 18 different characters. We’ve all seen a version of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol — but not like this. TPAC Education teams up with veteran Nashville actor Mark Cabus for this one-man show filmed in TPAC’s Polk Theater. The best part? Not only will the film be available to schools for digital access through Dec. 18, TPAC is giving it away for free to whoever wants it, starting Dec. 11 through Dec. 31. Using Dicken’s original text, Cabus’ critically acclaimed adaptation has been performed for more than 20 years to thousands of students and adults. “Mark Cabus is an innovator, so as soon as things started happening this year, his was the first project that popped in my mind. I figured, if anyone could do this, he could,” says Roberta Ciuffo-West, executive vice president of education at Tennessee Performing Arts Center. “It works so well because the intimacy of being with Mark as he plays 18 different parts — you feel a part of the story.” Cabus says it makes sense he performs this year to cameras instead of a live audience — something he had to adjust to. “It’s a little different. There’s no audience, and of course the crew doesn’t clap for me,” Cabus jokes. “Here you have 1,200 empty seats, and I’m just playing to six cameras that are three feet away from me. It’s a very odd, yet satisfying mix of theater, film and television.” Cabus enjoyed filming for a few reasons: Dec. 12 marks his 50th Anniversary as a professional actor, and Polk Theater was
the first Nashville stage he ever performed on when he was with Nashville Repertory Theatre during its second season. Cabus says A Christmas Carol is all about the story. “I think the reason A Christmas Carol is universal and so beloved is because it speaks to our time. It transcends period; it doesn’t necessarily have to be Victorian,” Cabus says. “I’m very moved by the fact TPAC Education was willing to do this and hang their hat on a project this ambitious.” And the story’s message couldn’t come at a better time, according to Cabus. “The beautiful message of this story is that there is always hope, whether it’s for a better day or better perspective,” he explains. “It doesn’t matter how deep the hole is. I mean, this story starts in a grave, and it’s a large and arduous journey for Scrooge. But in the end, if he’s willing to listen, he’s willing to change his mind. There’s hope — the chance of things turning around. We just have to keep pushing forward, because all nights eventually come to an end.” So should we be expecting to see more filmed staged performances with the pandemic continuing? “I know virtual work will never replace live theater, but it’s definitely opened up our eyes to this new possibility,” Ciuffo-West says. “If families have suggestions, desires or questions, we are so happy to hear from them directly.” As of today, TPAC’s Season for Young People has over 18,000 students registered to view A Christmas Carol. The public can register for the public access of A Christmas Carol starting Dec. 4 on TPAC’s website. Those who have registered will receive the information to access and view the performance on Dec. 11.
