Celebrating every day matters. Scarlett and her Mom know.

On Scarlett’s 9th birthday, she had a seizure and fell unconscious. Her mom, Holly, rushed her to the pediatric emergency department at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Monroe Carell’s experts diagnosed Scarlett with a brain tumor that was a ecting her ability to move. Fortunately, Scarlett’s nationally ranked pediatric neurosurgery team was able to completely remove the tumor.

Holly remembers Scarlett’s determination and spirit throughout her hospital stay. Just three days after surgery, Scarlett went home to celebrate the holidays with her family.

Today, Scarlett is seizure-free and no longer requires medication. She has made great strides in regaining her ability to move and is even playing soccer.

How to Support a Toddler When It’s the End of Times I

woke up with every intention of having a great day. Outside, playful little birds bounced through the trees. Mother Nature gleefully peeked her yellow face from behind the clouds. The new coffee we purchased tasted like paradise in a cup. A day like this … how could anything go wrong?

And then you woke up.

Immediately dissatisfied that a goofy sponge graced the television screen instead of a dancing cat, your lips quivered and your eyes swelled. A tsunami of noise poured from your pie hole. I’m pretty sure the neighbor’s alarm system kicked in when that first temper t antrum of the day erupted. But it didn’t end there. Your screaming quickly escalated to frantic pacing and pointing of rigid fingers, “DADA! NO! DADA! NO! NO, CAT!” Needless to say, my Folgers’ moment was ruined.

As any parent knows, when the day starts with a temper tantrum it usually goes south from there. And it did. You had no intention of being a well-behaved toddler You know … like those seen peppered throughout Facebook … those perfectly poised kids sitting on bales of hay and chilling in old iron washtubs? Oh no. You had other plans

When lunch time rolled around, against my better judgment, I allowed you to saunter through the pantry. Surely there was something in there that would strike your fancy. RIGHT?! Wrong. Among the one hundred and one cans of chicken noodle soup, endless boxes of macaroni and cheese and enough peanut butter to feed a Carnival cruise liner, there were no Pop-Tarts. No flipping Pop-Tarts! This meant the end of the world.

Before I even said anything, you were on the floor doing your best possessed snow angel impersonation. The ear-piercing screams nearly cracked the windows. Whatever was flailing like a wounded flounder in the middle of the kitchen floor couldn’t possibly be human. But it was. It was you, dear toddler

Experiences like these have lead me to one, weirdly comforting observation — tantrums are simply emotional throw up.

Think about it, when your child is ill and needs to vomit, what do you do? First, you find a safe and appropriate place for them to do that. And then you understand that it’s really their process — that you are just there for support.

But how exactly is the best way to support a child who is acting like it’s the end of times? Well, it apparently starts with checking ourselves to make sure we’re not anxious or tense and projecting all of that mental stress onto them. If you really think about it, that’s exactly what we try to do for our children when they’re sick and barfing stuff up. We don’t get angry with them for being messy in that physical state, so why would we get angry at them for being messy in an emotional one?

Bottom line is, keep your cool when your tiny humans have meltdowns. Continue to do your best to give them space to feel, express themselves and heal from tough situations — even if it means grossing yourself out a little by pretending that they’re puking when they’re really just pissed off.

“When I carried our two boys (now ages 38 & 42), I would have been sick the entire nine months if it weren’t for the medicine (bendectin) they gave at that time. How do I know this? I was five months before the medicine even kept me from throwing up. Every time that I thought I had surely passed that stage, I would stop taking the meds. Day one without it, I was fine. Day two, with time to be out of my system, I was right back to throwing up. My point is, don’t be afraid to take what your doctor believes is safe. Your body will thank you tremendously!”

“Medication is the only thing that kept me out of the hospital. Even then I barely functioned. Try Pedialyte freezer pops. They keep you hydrated and you can eat them very slowly.”

“I had to take meds with my third child and still continued to be sick. Luckily, I was a stay at home mom and could rest when the kids did. I lost 45 pounds while pregnant with

my daughter. A friend of my mom made me a soup that helped: whole chicken legs, whole onions, garlic cloves, whole, unpeeled carrots and potatoes, whole green beans and corn on the cob. Everything was washed and cooked together. It looked weird, but it worked.

“When I was pregnant, I would vomit without fail every morning as soon as I got ready to log into work. I would immediately eat half a peanut butter sandwich after that and it helped to make the nausea bearable. I kept peanut butter crackers and hard candy nearby. Lemonheads worked well, too.

“I was almost hospitalized due to weight loss with nausea. Nothing helped, and I couldn’t hold anything down. As a last

ditch effort, my doctor suggested I try vitamin B6. I was still nauseated, but no longer vomiting. It’s something to try that definitely shouldn’t hurt you or your baby. Prayers that you find your answer.”

“I was really sick and snacked on pretzel sticks when I first got up. I could only keep down or eat a few things, so I stuck to those. As you can see, everyone is different. Back when ice collected in old-fashioned freezers, my grandmother chipped that away and ate it when she was pregnant with my mom. The thing is, listen to your cravings and find what works for you. Also, check your prenatal vitamins — too much or too little iron can cause nausea, it depends on what your body needs. Peaches, green beans and fish and chips were my staples. Most other things I’d take a couple bites from and couldn’t eat anymore. Hang in there!”

MORE TO KNOW

Morning sickness can knock the socks off of you during pregnancy. While for many women, morning sickness begins during the first six weeks of pregnancy, it can pass by the second trimester. But some women experience nausea all the way through pregnancy.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cites ginger as safe for morning sickness. The FDA says it can decrease the frequency of nausea, but not the vomiting.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends eating something in the morning before getting out of bed.

Morning sickness is different from a stomach virus. With a virus you feel sick and know you shouldn’t eat. With morning sickness, you need to eat through the nausea so you can feel better.

Of course, if your vomiting is constant — to the point that you can’t even keep water down — call your doctor. There are treatments available to help.

Raise Your Voices for Fannie Battle Day Home for Children “Caroling for Kids”

Dec. 1 - 24, 2022

Fannie Battle Day Home has served thousands of families in need of childcare in East Nashville since 1891. This holiday season, they hope to raise $60,000 through the 106th Annual Caroling for Kids fundraiser.

Running December 1 - 24, proceeds from the fundraiser enable Fannie Battle Day Home to continue the mission of its founder, Miss Fannie Battle, to provide accessible, affordable, high-quality childcare and empowering families to reach their full potential.

Caroling for Kids began in December of 1916 when Fannie Battle Day Home was nearly forced to close. Volunteers worked fervently with local musicians to raise money by performing in theaters, hotels, schools and door to door. They managed to raise more than $750 and kept the doors open.

Now, Caroling for Kids is the Day Home’s longest-running event and a Nashville tradition. All ages can participate in caroling in East Nashville and surrounding zip codes. It’s a great opportunity to serve for girl scout troops, youth ministry groups or families.

ENCOURAGING YOUR CHILD’S Giving Spirit

When we give to others, we have an opportunity to change lives. If our kids are going to make the world a better place, we need to instill a giving spirit. The holidays provide the perfect timing for this; here are ways to do it.

We live in the age of selfies, where bullying is on the rise and civility is on the decline. Not-so-subtle societal messages tell us that our worth is defined by material possessions or by approval from social media “friends,” some of whom we barely know. In such a hands-off environment, it is easy to retreat from others or to believe that we are the center of our own worlds.

Ironically, experts tell us that the acceptance and achievement we crave can come from focusing on others. Since empathy is a strong predictor of future success, our children may be better off cultivating a giving spirit instead of chasing recognition or developing an individual “brand.” Michele Borba, author of Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed In Our All-About-MeWorld, (Touchstone; 2017), says that “the ability to empathize affects our kids’ future health, wealth, authentic happiness, relationship satisfaction and the ability to bounce back from diversity.”

Children Are Born to Care

Children are hard-wired with the spirit of giving. That’s apparent in the toddler who weeps at the sight of an upset playmate, the preschooler who offers their teddy bear to a sick sibling or the school-aged child who grabs a sponge when mom is washing the car. Yet, as they grow, children receive society’s clear message that it’s sometimes unsafe or unwise to care.

Fortunately, families have the power to foster empathy. Research shows that caregivers who openly express warmth and compassion raise more kind-hearted children. This process begins at birth and is intuitive. Routinely giving a patient, timely and consistent response to an infant’s cries or a toddler’s skinned knee tells that child that helping others is important. Once a child is secure that the world is a safe and loving place, it’s easier for them to develop empathy.

Experts say that the first opportunity for a child to help others is in their own home. Therefore, they recommend assigning household responsibilities. “Children need jobs,” says author and pediatrician Dr. William Sears. “Once a child learns a sense of responsibility for the household, a sense of responsibility to society

will come naturally in the next stage of development.”

Kids Who Help Others Help Themselves

Children who reach out to others enjoy an increased sense of well-being, self-worth and optimism. Helping others builds up a child’s defense system against temptation and stress.

Kids learn that it feels good to do the right thing, so it’s easier for them to say no to the wrong things. Since their personal worth is reinforced by their kindness toward others, they don’t need to search for it in material possessions or in poor choices.

Even The Busiest Families Can Fold Giving Into Their Schedules

Jenny Friedman, author of The Busy Family’s Guide To Volunteering: Do Good , Have Fun, Make a Difference as a Family Together (Gryphon House; 2003), says that finding time to help others is easier than you may think. For example, families who already enjoy crafts can make get well cards or toys. Supplies for a neighbor in need can be gathered while doing your own errands.

Families who are animal lovers may enjoy fostering an animal for deployed military.

Experts suggest starting small, with a one-time/no further obligation commitment. If all family members enjoy the experience and want to repeat it, consider adding on. But always be conscious of overcommitting. Studies show that when giving feels overwhelming or obligatory, the potential benefits are lost. It’s much easier (and more comfortable) to increase your commitment when you have more time than to cut back and feel guilty because you’ve taken on too much.

Teaching children to care and to offer their time and their talents to others is a win-win situation. Developing a child’s innate giving spirit helps them find purpose and satisfaction. It is the gift that keeps giving because they will likely teach empathy to their own children so that compassion will thrive in your family for years to come.
