DAY BY DAY Speak Up, Child!

y father used to say, jokingly, “Children should be seen and not heard.” As a kid, I would laugh for the twinkle in his eye, understanding that he was kidding, but suspecting in my core, that maybe he really wasn’t. We were five noisy kids and Dad was a writer; he was probably 100 percent serious. Adults are like that. They say many things that are open to interpretation, but with parenting kids, you have to be ultra clear. You have to be specific with children in order for them to understand your expectations ... or they will find the loopholes. But in my opinion, the expression, “children should be seen and not heard,” just doesn’t cut it today. Children aren’t heard enough. They are often silent on their devices. Parents have to draw them out, make real efforts to communicate with them and insist that they talk. It’s not just about the importance of communication, it’s about the future and about growing up and recognizing the importance of speaking your mind. The First Amendment to the Constitution provides for freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion and freedom to protest. Children need to learn these basic values so they can grow into adults who speak and share their points of view. Today more than ever we need to provide homes where Mom, Dad and the kids speak freely and are heard. John Lewis, American statesman and civil rights activist, put it clearly in 2017 when he said, “I say to young people all the time ... I say when you see something that’s not right, not fair, not just, you cannot afford to be silent. You have to speak up, speak out and find a way to get in the way, to get in what I call ‘good trouble, necessary trouble.’” Lewis was wise about that. We must provide a smooth pathway for our children to get in necessary trouble. In your house, your kids need to know that their unique point of view is valid and that they ARE heard. If you dictate what your kids can or cannot say, then your kids aren’t really free. They will find friends they can talk to and eventually box you out. Of course you don’t want cussing kids, disrespectful kids, warring kids. You want kids who say, “My parents talk with me, they hear me out, we go back and forth and look at all sides.” What is the point of free speech if children are afraid to speak freely? Teach your kids to be brave and to talk up. Teach them to be courageous to speak their minds respectfully and listen to them when they do. It’s never been more important than it is today.

The National Museum of African American Music is Open to the Public

ashville is known as the country music destination, but now it’s adding soul, gospel, and R&B, thanks to the addition of a new museum focusing on African American music. The National Museum of African American Music held its ribboncutting ceremony on MLK Day at the museum, located in downtown Nashville. It is now open to the public. It’s the first and only museum of its kind in the U.S. featuring seven galleries that use artifacts, objects, memorabilia, clothing and state-of-the-art technology to walk guests through the history of African American music, from the early 1600s to present day. The experience starts with a short introductory film that provides an overview of West and Central African cultures. It goes on to describe various time periods

that influenced the creation of African American music, such as the Reconstruction era, Jim Crow, the Great Migration, World War I and II, and the Harlem Renaissance. “We have been preparing for this day for more than 20 years, but this museum has actually been more than 400 years in the making,” says museum president and CEO H. Beecher Hicks III. Due to safety protocols, the museum is currently allowing timed entry only. Admission is free for children 6 and younger; $13.50 for ages 7 - 17; $24.95 for adults 18 - 64; and $18.75 for seniors. The address is 510 Broadway in Nashville. The phone number is 615-301-8724. Good Dental Care During COVID Dental cavities can be chronic for kids in childhood; let no baby tooth go unbrushed!

y girl was an early bloomer. She had her first tooth when she was just two months old — at least I think so. I was so pre-occupied with work stuff, household chores and new mommy duties that I don’t know for sure when it first arrived. I DO remember using a clean, damp washcloth to gently rub that little tooth into existence.

BABY CARE Every baby is special and unique. Some babies will have their milk teeth, aka baby teeth, almost completely by 18 months, while some are just about to start in the teething journey. In most cases,

teeth development is due to genetics. If late teething runs in the family, then there is a pretty high chance that your child will develop teeth on the later side, not that it matters. But lack of nutrients and vitamins are the other factors that can contribute to late teething. For instance, if you are using baby formula exclusively for your baby, you might consider mixing breast milk and baby formula to ensure that your baby is getting enough calcium and vitamin C to support bone development, boost immunity and lessen the risk of delayed teething. No matter late or early teeth though, dentists say the best way to care and safeguard your baby’s teeth is to start dental care early. That means cleaning your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth,

after feedings, before the first tooth arrives, and then after a tooth arrives, beginning a brushing routine. As soon as Baby’s first tooth pokes through the gums, you can add gentle brushing to his daily morning and nighttime routine. Make sure that you use a softbristled brush on Baby’s new teeth, and just a teeny dot of toothpaste. When two teeth arrive next to each other, start the flossing routine.

CAVITIES According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five kids ages 5 - 11 have at least one untreated decayed tooth. My daughter was 2 when I first took her to our family dentist. I was confident that her teeth were in good shape because we never missed a day of brushing and flossing. To my surprise, the dentist found three cavities which needed treating. He recommended having one of my daughter’s teeth extracted to prevent dental caries from spreading, but I opted not to do that since she was only 2. I don’t know if I made a mistake or not, but she has beautiful, strong teeth today!

BABY TEETH No matter what, don’t take your kids’ dental care for granted. Serious teeth problems can affect appetite and speech development if they go undetected. Here are simple tips for taking good care of your baby’s milk teeth. Gum Care – Proper dental care starts even before your baby’s first teeth are out. Removing the bacteria off the gums is important to remove any plaque that can damage the developing baby teeth. Moisten a soft gauze or cloth and gently wipe the gum. Make it a habit to clean your baby’s gum before bedtime and after feedings. Brushing – Brush teeth twice a day. Use a soft toothbrush. Start with a small dab of fluoride tooth-

paste — as small as a rice grain — and incrementally increase this to reach the size of a pea. Flossing – Good dental care includes flossing, yet many kids skip this part. Snodgrass-King Dental Practice says as soon as your child has two teeth that touch, you can begin to teach flossing dental habits. Be extra gentle with kids and never apply so much pressure that it hurts. Regular dental visits – Prepare your child before a scheduled visit. Help him understand the importance of the checkup and try to remove any anxiety or negative feeling that he (or you!) have about the appointment. Have a good relationship with the dentist and ask important questions such as those related to teething, proper oral care routine and managing dental problems. Be a role model – Parents are the first teachers and role models of for children. Be a good example to your kids. Show them the right way of flossing and brushing the teeth. Limit sweet and starchy snacks in the house. Above all, be there for them and always remind them how important dental health is to your life. Susan Day is editor of this publication.

With this app, kids play with Little Monsters before brushing starts. Next, the Little Monsters guide your child through the brushing activity. BRUSH TEETH WITH THE WIGGLES (Android/ iOS). Great for little wigglers, Wiggles’ characters and other kids are featured brushers there to inspire your child. Rewards, too.

Local camps have worked hard to put COVID guidelines in place and to work with your child’s utmost safety in mind. Read on to learn about the ins and outs of summer day camps.

Summer camp gets kids off of devices and fosters independence for kids who are used to having things done for them. Other benefits of summer day camp include: • discovery of new interests and hobbies • the opportunity for creative expression • a break from being plugged-in • daily exercise

THE BENEFITS OF SUMMER CAMP Summer camp offers kids plenty of benefits, and many kids thrill at the idea of going to camp. For first-time day campers, it’s a great idea to invite a friend to go along. While kids will make new friends at camp, it’s always great to have a buddy or sibling along to help break the ice.

Summer Plans THE SEARCH Before you begin looking into summer camps, think about what you want for your kids and think about the summer ahead: is there a wedding? A reunion? A memorial service to attend? Many big dates have been pushed because of COVID, so get a master calendar in place before penciling in your child’s activities. Then as yourself, do I want a camp that’s very structured and focused in one area or one that provides lots of freedom and choices? Also consider your child’s passions, sport affinities and other interests. Once you’ve selected a few summer camps that meet your primary criteria, and that fit your child’s interests, share the choices with your child to see what excites him. Be sure to let your child know upfront that you still need to thoroughly investigate the camp(s) before making a final decision. But do keep your child’s choices in mind to ensure your child gets the most out of summer camp. Once you and your child have narrowed the list down to a manageable selection, you’ll want to investigate the camps further. There are several things you’ll want to consider. • STAFF QUALIFICATIONS? Many summer camps use teens to staff the camps. Teens make excellent mentors and can bring liveliness to summer camp programs. However, the programs themselves should be developed by professionals and have professional oversight to ensure kids are getting the most from their camp experience. • SAFETY AND COVID-19 PROTOCOLS Find out what kind of safety training the camp provides its staffers. Also, is there staff on hand at all times that knows CPR? What are the camp’s procedures in the event your child becomes ill, has an accident, or an emergency? • DAILY SCHEDULE? Ask for a daily itinerary, so you know your child will be getting everything you and your child anticipate from the program. • WHAT ARE THE RULES? Each camp has its own set of rules. So, find out whether your child is allowed to call you. If it’s a summer-long residential camp, can parents come and visit? Can kids bring along a cell phone or electronics? Also, how much money can they bring, and how is it managed? • DON’T SWEAT IT Keep in mind, although there are many great camps, no camp is likely to offer everything precisely the way you want it. Just choose the one that best fits your child and satisfies your most important criteria. Picasso Exhibit Makes Only U.S. Stop At The Frist

umerous works of Pablo Picasso are coming to the United States, but only for a limited time and only in Music City. Picasso Figures will feature 75 paintings, works on paper and sculptures focused on the human figure at Frist Art Museum from Feb. 5 through May 2. The exhibit arriving from France is right on time for The Frist’s 20th anniversary celebration. “For many years, we have been looking for a Picasso show of this caliber, and we are thrilled that during our 20th anniversary we will be able to share this astonishing collection with our city,” says Susan H. Edwards, Frist Art Museum director and CEO. On loan from the Musee National Picasso-Paris, the exhibition showcases Picasso’s unique take on the human body through abstract art. Many subjects in the works include portraits of friends, family members, wives, mistresses and models. “Viewers will see how, as

Picasso continuously deconstructed and then remade the body, he was also recasting the history of figuration as a combination of his own psychological view of humanity and observations about the disruptive nature of life in the 20th century,” says Frist Art Museum chief curator Mark Scala. Families interested in Martin ArtQuest Gallery activities can enjoy special “cubist” nature blocks on the spatial exploration station and a special selection of books about Picasso that can be used for a reading list. There’s also a FristKids Activity Page exploring “mood in art” and Picasso’s unique style through a video and printable PDF. Due to COVID, the museum has changed its hours and ticketing to timed entry in order to ensure safety. Admission to the museum is free to members and guests under 18, $15 for adults, $10 for seniors over 65, and $8 for military personnel with ID. Beloved Kids’ Book Pounces From Page to Stage with NCT’s ‘Pete the Cat’

o matter where he goes, Pete the Cat always keeps his cool. I don’t know about your kids, but mine could sure learn a thing or two from this message — presented in the new production by Nashville Children’s Theatre. I recently watched it at home with my little one and if this play can hold the attention of a 2-and-a-half-year-old, then it’s worth every penny. Based on the popular children’s book series, Pete the Cat is a groovy, blue cat who loves surfing, playing guitar, friends and trying new things. Originally intended for live performance last spring, Executive Director Ernie Nolan decided to film the production on the NCT stage. “This has been a difficult time for the community, and we want to continue to provide smiles and entertainment to those who need it,” says Nolan. It’s not exactly how Nolan envisioned NCT celebrating its 90th anniversary season. “At this point in the season we’d have had 33,000 students in the building. So this streamed

production that’s available to grades, classes and entire schools is a way that we’re trying to continue to serve the more than 65,000 children we do every year,” Nolan said. Directed by Chad Denning, Pete the Cat is a perfect blend of live theater and film. It’s like you’re at the theater, but you still have the ability to pause for a snack or bathroom break. The show’s cast is talented yet few: only five actors play multiple roles. Brian Charles Rooney plays Pete the Cat, who hilariously enters the relatable family dynamic of Jimmy Biddle (Gerold Oliver) and his Dad (James Rudolph), Mom (Meggan Utech) and sister, Olive (Melissa Tormene). The set design (Scott Leathers) and costumes (Natasha Herron) fit perfectly with the whimsical play, but it’s the music, songs and choreography that kept us glued to the screen. The show has some serious toe-tappers that your kids are sure to enjoy! NCT’s performance of Pete the Cat is available to stream for $19.99 at nashvillechildrenstheatre.org until June.

Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll Tina Turner was born in Nutbush – which she made famous with her hit, “Nutbush City Limits.” Turner attended a one-room schoolhouse located in Brownsville – one of the first schools built in the South for African-Americans. Visitors can explore the largest known collection of Turner’s costumes and memorabilia.
